president. of course, we're taking more rain, cooler temperatures. just how long is this going to last? i've got that forecast. but we want to start with breaking news. chaos at the silver diner. take a look at this video. these are the frantic few minutes following the crash as flames were shooting into the air. >> this happened right at the height of the lunchtime rush. pat collins is there with another look at the crash and the moments that occurred after as people rushed to try to get the driver out of the car and the people inside the diner. >> reporter: pandemonium here at lunchtime at the silver diner. take a look behind me. you can see what's left on this hummer, the hummer that caught fire in front of the diner. witnesses say it rammed into the front of the diner, backed up, and rammed into it again. backed up and rammed into

third time. the billowing black smoke reached high into the air. a hummer on fire at the entrance to the silver diner at tyson's corner. >> just so terrible, so shocking, you know? everyone's there, you know, talking and having their coffee or having lunch, and it was just so out of the blue. but time just completely froze. >> reporter: he took this video. he was inside having a cup of coffee when it happened. mr. yateman and other witnesses say it appears the driver of the hummer deliberately drove it into the diner a number of times. and at one point, pinned a customer against the front door. >> there was a man who got p pinned against the door. it was

it was full force on. and it looked like as soon as he got hit he kind of passed out. >> reporter: then came the fire, that roaring torch like fire that they say appeared to start in the front between the driver and passenger's seat. >> you could see it flaming up right near the driver, and that's where the fire first showed up. then it got bigger and bigger. at some point, there was total pandemonium in the restaurant. >> reporter: diner workers moved quickly to try to drag the driver from the hummer. witnesses say he yelled things like don't touch me, leave me alone, but they got him out. a spokesman says the driver of the hummer is a cook at the restaurant. she says he's worked there for about two years, that he's been on bereavement leave since april 5th.

after what happened this afternoon, the spokeswoman for the silver diner says the cook, the driver of that hummer, was fired. now there were four injured today. they're expected to be okay. coming up at 5:00, more witnesses from inside, outside, more video of this frightening scene here at the silver diner. now back to you, chris. >> thank you, pat. now to some breaking news in our decision 2016 coverage. david culver is at our live desk. what do we know? >> multiple sources telling nbc news that john kasich will suspend his campaign. this is going to officially happen a news conference. we're told it is going to be at 5:00. that's going to clear the way for donald trump to secure the nomination. governor kasich was supposed to be in our area today. he had events scheduled in maryland and virginia. in fact, sources tell nbc that

kasich had already boarded a plane to fly to dulles airport, but wound out never leaving ohio, making the decision to drop out while on that plane. kasich and cruz met privately in san francisco. this was over the past weekend. it was there that cruz seemed to imply that he would get out of the race if he lost indiana, and the kasich began discussing its future. sources saying, quote, there is zero chance kasich will be trump's running mate. we are monitoring that news conference. 5:00 is when it is scheduled for. we'll bring it to you live. on the democratic side, bernie sanders now has his sights set on kentucky. after his win in indiana, sanders has no plans to drop out of the race, even though hillary clinton has a wide lead in delegates. clinton is here in our area today. an hour from now, she'll be speaking at a reception for asian-pacific heritage month. it's

weather and another chance of showers. >> doug, it feels like you've got one forecast and you're just running it on this continuous loop day after day. >> i really don't want to work hard. we've had 16 days in a row of nothing but sunshine and beautiful weather. we've had nine days in a row now of rain and cool weather. today, though, we're in the 50s to around 60. we have more rain across the area. some lightening up around the martinsburg area. coming down in warrenton and right along 217 as well. there's a lot more to come. we're not going to see rain today. but look at all the moisture here. it's all part of an area of low pressure that's not only going to give us the moisture. it's going to keep us cool. 59 right now in d.c.

we're not getting warm anytime soon, but there is good news in the forecast. well, right now, we are awaiting the court appearance for the man who is accused of hijacking that metro bus and then hitting and killing a man. keith loving is charged with second-degree murder. this unfolded yesterday morning in northeast d.c. court documents say loving smoked k2 and pcp before he hijacked that bus. anthony payne was killed. shomari stone is in the courtroom now. he's going to have more once loving makes his appearance. metro just learning that your safety will be the focus of a hearing on capitol hill yet again. the house subcommittee on highways and transit just announcing this afternoon that hearing is set for tuesday, may 24th.

let's take a live look at flint, michigan, where president obama is listening to what residents have to say about the water crisis and trying to get an update on the federal response. he's speaking at a town hall meeting. but during a roundtable discussion earlier in the day, he urged the residents to use the water filters that are being provided free of charge, but cautioned parents to have their young children examined. this is the first time the president has visited flint since the

became contaminated with lead. he took a sip of the city's water to prove it is safe to drink again, but says the focus now is restoring trust and rebuilding the filtration system. >> what i'm encouraged by is a recognition at every level of government that we have to take what has been a crisis and see if we can turn this into an opportunity to rebuild flint even better than before. >> the president declared a state of emergency in flint back in january. he's coming back to washington tonight. we are learning new details about the navy s.e.a.l. who was killed in iraq during that attack by isis fighters. reports on the man whose destiny was laid out during the attack. >> reporter: charlie keating pictured here with his fe

you see a couple of different systems, but it looks like one big system. look at this guy just spinning up here towards the great lakes. notice the spin isn't moving. we're going to continue to see these clouds and cool weather and the showers right on through the day on friday. here's future weather timing it out for us. one thing for sure, we're not going to see a lot over the next 24 hours. tomorrow morning a few showers around, but that's about it. thursday afternoon, tomorrow afternoon, maybe back towards the mountains. that's really going to be about it. not expecting a lot of shower activity around d.c. can't rule it out. watch friday. that system moves back in. friday morning not good. heavy rain coming in during the day on friday. that's the day we could see the heaviest rain. the best news about this temperatures upper 50s to around 60. saturday and sunday right now looking good. 73 on saturday. 75 coming up on

first at 4, we're hearing some new revelations about prince and his possible drug use. the day before he died, a doctor in california was allegedly asked to come to paisley park. this doctor specialized in in treating addiction and was supposed to help with prince deal with his dependence on painkillers, but he couldn't fly to minnesota right away

we have a busy afternoon of breaking news. first, four people have been hurt after the a driver crashed into the silver diner in tyson's. the driver drove into it, backed into it again, then backed up and drove into it again. about 30 minutes from now, we expect republican hopeful john kasich to announce he's suspending his campaign. this comes after donald trump ran away with the indiana primary. ted cruz suspended his campaign last night. steve handelsman is standing by to hear what kasich says in his announcement. >> we can pretty

john kasich has fewer republican delegates than marco rubio has. he has only won the state of ohio. he was up here on capitol hill here for years and years, decades, and rose to republican leader. he has experience like donald trump in the business world. he worked out of columbus for a wall street bank. he's a smart guy. he's a good politician, but he was a flop as a presidential candidate. but he hung on hoping, like ted cruz was hoping, that donald trump could be stopped short of the nomination last night in indiana. instead trump won and kasich is out. he's been given the title of presumptive nominee. nbc news is not calling trump is presumptive nominee, but the d head of the republican party and the top

republican party are terming donald trump the presumptive nominee. some republicans say they won't help. a few burned their republican registration cards, but trump said the party will come together. i don't think it is imperative that the entire party come together, said trump. i don't want everybody, vintage trump. the billionaire businessman campaigned from far outside the capitol beltway say he's considering hiring as his running mate an insider. kasich is being vetted among others. kasich's people say no way john kasich will go to work now for donald trump. back to you guys. >> that announcement

well, hollywood celebrities raising some big bucks for the national museum that is dedicated to african-american history. the crowd raised more than $17 million for the smithsonian's museum of african-american history and culture. the museum has a $550 million price tag. the federal government contributed half of it, but that leaves the smithsonian and others to make up the other half. the museum on the national mall set to open september 24th. well, a lot of you are calling tonight's caps playoff game a must-win. lose to the penguins and the team will be on the brink of elimination. we're all thinking positively. >> reporter: pivotal game four here tonight. caps do not want to come home down two games in the series, so the pressure is on and the caps

still tracking rain out there right now. storm team 4 radar showing you where that rain is. notice these showers. heavy rain around martinsburg and down towards the winchester area. not moving fast. another area of rain around culpeper county and fauquier county. you can see some very heavy rain right here. this will eventually move toward manassas. it is also moving along 66. more rain likely over the next couple of days, and that's really the headline here. we're going to continue to see showers and a few storms just about each day. those will be sticking around each friday, but a better weekend.

from dry to soggy, this month of may we have gotten a lot of rain already. another 1 to 2 inches potentially by late friday. i'll time it out for you coming up. which rush hour will be the wettest? a young woman scared for her safety. why she says her political painting led to a very painful experience. the biggest recall in u.s. history is about to double in size raising some new concerns about replacing all those air bags. >> susan hogan is

information that you need to know about this. susan? >> that's right. this is big. we are talking another 35 to 40 million more air bag inflaters being recalled. this is a stunning increase which is will double the largest automotive recall in american history. however, if your vehicle is among those being recalled, you could be waiting for years for a replacement part. nhtsa revealing today it could take until the end of 2019 to complete. as a result, this extended recall will be phased in. >> this phased approach is supported by the scientific data, and will help to ensure the most dangerous inflaters are targeted first while ensuring all inflaters are placed on an aggressive schedule. >> air bags become unsafe over time in

humidity. vehicles matching those criteria will be priority. 11 deaths are being blamed on the defective air bags. ten of those in the united states. hundreds of injuries have been reported. you can go to our washington app and search takata. developing right now, a wildfire is blazing through parts of western canada. take a look at this video. you can see the widespread flames and huge clouds of smoke. thousands of people have been forced to leave their homes causing long backups on highways going out of the area. so far the wildfire has destroyed nearly 80% of the homes in one neighborhood. severely damaged a lot of others nearby. and now your storm team 4 forecast. >> a wet start to the month of may. while we do have a couple of dry days coming up, you're not goi

active month with a lot of rain. for today, we're not seeing any thunderstorms. we've been overcast throughout the day. we're seeing a couple of areas of rain making its way north and northeastward. you have one down here just south of fredericksburg. another one here south of leesburg advancing slowly off to the east. it will hit areas of fairfax in the next couple of minutes. then another in hagerstown and winchester. this is the strongest area i'm seeing right now at david's crossroads and bradley forest and kopp in the next few. not seeing any lightning with it. just heavy rain. tomorrow, though, the weather is going to have a low impact on our day. just more showers, but here's

down. this is going to be the tenth straight day of rain coming our way, so you're going to need the rain jacket again. not much of a change for tomorrow. our temperatures may get a little higher than today. upper 60s to low 50s. 55 to 56 degrees around lunchtime. we top out around 60 degrees. you can see 8:00 a.m. just a few isolated showers around the area, but watch what happens as we get into the latter part of the day on thursday as well as friday morning. a little area of low pressure, northeasterly wind. that rain is going to come wrapping back around. it is these areas leesburg, warrenton, that could see the 2 inch rainfall totals out of this system by the end of friday, early saturday. as we take a look at the road impacts, friday morning rush soggy, looking very
