on right now. we have crews heading to the scene. let's go to scott. >> my apologies. juggling a lot of information here. it is a double shooting. one person dead. one person wounded on the grounds of high point high school. you have an image there that shows you the proximity to powder mill road near i-95 in beltsville. two people shot on the grounds outside high point high school. one dead, one wounded. this school let out at 2:25 this afternoon. that's the normal bell time at high point. the reports are coming in of a double shooting sometime late this afternoon. we have several crews en route, but now we can tell you emergency medical services crews are telling us two people shot outside high point high school. more information as it comes in. >> scott, do we know what time school let out and if either of these victims was a student in fact? >> we don't know the age or the demographics of the students. school let out

>> we're talking about powder mill road. likely to impact some traffic because this is fairly close to, what, the beltway? >> yeah, it is in beltsville. powder mill, a major artery through bw parkway through i-95. this happened just west of i-95 off powder mill road near the cherry hill neighborhood. we have breaking news on metro this afternoon. we're learning about a possible track problem at the federal center metro station. there have been reports of smoke. crews are trying to figure out if this is just trash on the tracks or one of those arcing insulators. services is suspended at eastern market and l'enfant plaza

major overhaul on the rail system is expected to be announced tomorrow morning. we'll have our announcement on our nbc washington app for you. this will mean long delays for thousands of commuters. mark segraves. >> reporter: this is actually going to be more than just a rehab. this is going to be almost a complete rebuilding top to bottom of the metro rail system. that means it is going to take time and cost money. >> we are running on tracks and ties and cables, et cetera, that were laid in the early 1970s. >> reporter: metro board chairman jack evans says metro is the only major subway system in the united states that hasn't had a complete rehab and we can't wait any longer. >> it's not fixable by the way we're doing it now, three hours a night during the week and two hours a night on weekends. it's left the system worsf

>> reporter: metro's new general manager has scheduled a press briefing for friday morning to lay out his plan to completely ov overhaul the system. >> we'll have to have more closures. from what i hear, we're going to be single tracking trains and closing segments of lines in order to work on them. >> reporter: while there are no plans to close the entire system, portions of metro will likely be shut down for days or even weeks. that could mean some stations will be closed as well. large portions are expected to be reduced to single tracking for as long as a month or more at a time. it adds up to delays and inconvenience for the hundreds of thousands who depend on metro every day. most riders agree the system needs to be fixed, but some are skeptical. >> it's hard to know whether he is right or not. >> reporter: others worry about the impacts of

>> it's going to have a ripple effect on the rest of the traffic. they're going to be on the roadinroads and other means. >> reporter: metro plans to use fleets of buses to help fill the gaps if stations have to be closed. the project will impact every line of the system. >> 15 years of neglect. this is what happens when people in the past didn't do their jobs. >> reporter: we'll learn tomorrow morning when construction will start and which lines will be impacted first. the cost of this project is going to be into the billions of dollars. coming up at 6:00, why that could mean local taxes are going up as well as taxes around the country could have to pay for this. we're also going to tell you why once this work is completed metro will still face long-term problems. back to you guys in the studio. >> huge changes on the way. thank you. we want you to weigh in on this. how would you like to see metro complete needed

survey this afternoon. you can call or text the number on your screen or cast your vote on the nbc washington facebook page. a 3-year-old boy is now safe tonight after a desperate search. he was taken from his mother after she got a fight with his father. that led to a region wide manhunt. the mother and child reunited. news4 meagan fitzgerald joins us live. >> reporter: wendy, deputies arrested 28-year-old joshua williams just after 1:00 today. we're told he's being questioned by investigators and he is cooperating, but investigators say, hey, look, we know this guy. he has a long violent past. but we went to this guy's neighborhood he once lived in and neighbors there said they didn't realize he was violent. an entire region was told to be on the lookout for 3-year-old zion

highway signs were updated and fliers were passed out. on wednesday night, zion's father severely beat his ex-girlfriend who is also zion's mother. captain jeff pierce with the spotsylvania county sheriff's department says the assault happened inside the car while the toddler was in the backseat. the mother got out and that's when deputies say williams drove off with zion and an amber alert went out. >> it was also determined and discovered that mr. williams made previous threats to seriously serious seriously injure or kill the child. >> reporter: he was dropped off at his grandmother's house. >> we don't know who dropped the child off, but he was returned

>> reporter: moments later investigators found and arrested williams who was hiding in a home a few miles away. >> we made contact and he came out and surrendered. >> reporter: neighbors who live in the suspect's hold neighborhood say they're shocked. >> i've had a couple of encounters with that guy. he's always been a nice guy. >> reporter: joshua williams is facing serious charges for abducting his son and beating his ex-girlfriend. deputies say williams will be charged with felony abduction and malicious attack for allegedly attacking his ex-girlfriend. coming up at 6:00, deputies talk about how they were able to locate williams to make that arrest and they talk about the resources they were able to call in to make this happen. back to you. >> thank you. turning to the weather now. we have lost count. yesterday we said nine days. ten days in a row of rain now? >> 110 now, doug. it feels like it. >> everybody is saying, w

that's the kind of weather we've had. it's all been out there. we're seeing that again today. most of the day has been dry, but we've seen a few showers, a few areas of drizzle. now tracking more showers. some to the south, some to the north. northern prince george's county, howard county, frederick county, they're all moving to the south and east. heads up around gaithersburg and the 270 corridor. that's in the next half hour or so. it is part of a big system. it is a very big system just spinning down to our south. what it is going to continue to do is bring a lot of moisture tomorrow. one very wet day. we'll talk about that coming up in just a minute, but some of that rain could be on the heavy side. carry the umbrellas tomorrow and the weekend at least looks nice. 11 days of straight rain. disturbing new details tonight about the death of a young man from centerville, virginia. he was found dead in his bed at his family's

he had been stabbed in the chest. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey joins us live with the revelation that this attack didn't take place in his home. >> reporter: this search warrant obtains some troubling information. he was viciously attacked at a party, but instead of calling 99 911, his friends drove him back to his house and put him in bed where his family discovered him dead the next day. he had been studying at george mason university. on april 24th, his family found him dead in his bed. the autopsy showed he died from a stab wound to the chest. no arrests have been made yet, but this search warrant details the alarming facts. court documents report lee went to a large party the night of april 23rd that lasted into the earl m

24th. he was physically assaulted by a mob of 10 to 15 individuals. they saw people stomping, kicking, and punching lee while he lay motionless on the kitchen floor. he was then stabbed, but instead of calling911 for help, his friends reportedly put him in the car and drove him bleeding back to his townhouse where they placed him in bed. last week police went to serve a search warrant on this townhouse looking for possible evidence connected to the attack. the front door at that home still ajar. as police continue the investigation, hundreds came together a week ago to mourn the loss of steven lee. lee was a volunteer and a small group leader. one of his closest friends has set up this gofundme page to raise money to help his family through this very difficult time. what one of steven's friends thinks might be behind this

in the race to the white house, the fight for the democratic nomination is moving forward as both parties face a primary next tuesday in west virginia. chris lawrence is in the newsroom with the details on that. >> we've got a lot to tell you about the democrats, but first we want to get to the presumptive republican nominee. house speaker paul ryan says he wants to support donald trump, but he's not there yet. he made those comments as trump is already starting to talk about the stakes. trump said there was a 40% chance he could pick one of his former rivals. ben carson is expected to be part of a committee to help him select a running mate. meantime we learned today mitt romney as well as john mccain and both former presidents bush 41 and 43 are going to sit out the republican convention this summer. neither of the former presidents plans to endorse trump. this afternoon he posted a photo to social a

-- cinco de mayo. he called for bernie sanders to run as an independent. mr. trump is going to be in our region later this evening with a rally down in charleston. as for bernie sanders, he is in west virginia today at a stop in charleston just about an hour ago. part of a three-city tour of that state by the sanders campaign. hillary clinton had events earlier this week in west virginia. she is now out west today holding a rally tonight in california. clinton spoke earlier this afternoon to a group of community leaders in los angeles. she touted her advantage over sanders of nearly 300 pledged delegates and more than 3 million votes. her campaign also launched a new stop trump fund. sanders had a town hall style event earlier today in one of the poorest counties in the nation. he did not directly mention

happening his life. >> reporter: it was during lunchtime yesterday that a cook in the diner rammed his hummer into the entrance not once, not twice, but three times. at one point pinning a customer against the front door. then came the fire, a fire that he may have set himself, a fire that sent smoke billowing into the air. employees dragged the cook from the suv even as he retistsisted saying, don't touch me, leave me alone. police are considering malicious wounding and destruction of property charges, but those charges could change as the investigation continues. now four people were injured here. everyone is expected to be okay. now this afternoon they put this sign out outside. they're h

we've seen a lot of clouds over the past couple of days. really 11 days now in a row with some rain across our area. before i talk about the weather, you can see it is a gloomy day out there. a lot of kids not quite enjoying all of this rain. i actually went down to graham road elementary school in falls church. talked to the fourth graders there earlier today. i want to say hello to them. now let's talk about the weather. you know we've had the chance for rain all day long. we haven't seen a lot, and that's what we talked about last night. we wouldn't see a lot of rain today, but we would see those showers come through. just clouds around the d.c. metro area. 57. winds northeast at 14. it's rather cool and most of the time it brings clouds

showers. that's what we have. 55 in winchester. 55 fredericksburg. normally our weather goes from west to east, but not when we have these nor'easter like systems that bring us the weather right off of the ocean. we do have some showers right through parts of montgomery county and howard county and frederick county. this is moving right towards gaithersburg. this whole line will encompass the beltway and right up 270. that's going to make 270 a slow-go. what else is new? satellite radar showing the cloud cover around our region, but most of the rain will be south and west and that's where it is. a lot of rain down to the south. look at this motion here. it is stuck there. it's not going anywhere soon, so that provides the clouds and the very cool temperatures. 56 in new york. only 51 down toward

even snow in snowshoe, west virginia. why is this happening? feeling more like seattle for sure. we have a big trough of low pressure around our region. a big ridge in the middle part of our country. winnipeg, canada, right now, 93 degrees. very cool out to the west. this is what is called an omega block. all that means to you and i this is not moving anywhere fast. it is a blocking pattern. with that, that means area of low pressure continues to sti around the area, so it is hard to move. sticking through the day on saturday. i think it will start to get a lot nicer by saturday afternoon. tonight, a few showers moving on in through here. we've got the rain. it rains just all day. look at 1:00. tomorrow will not be a good day to get outdoors. thank goodness cinco de mayo is today. tomorrow a very wet day. it does look like we'll start to dry on saturday. a high of 67.

an update on that breaking news on metro this afternoon. no train service between eastern market and l'enfant plaza stationca a lot of smoke in the federal station. that station was evacuated. not clear what is causing this. it could be trash on the tracks. it could be one of those arcing insulators. federal center station has been evacuated. trains moved out and there is no train service between eastern market and l'enfant plaza. shuttle buses are being provided. you can see a lot of fire activity outside of the station. no injuries reported. metro says to avoid this area if you can. now to our other breaking story tonight. a double shooting at a high school in prince george's county. shomari stone is on the scene.

>> reporter: well, we were across the street moments ago. police asked us politely to move back over here, and that's exactly what we did. let me move right out of the way. you can see police are on the scene. people who are behind the yellow crime scene are not allowed to leave right now and people on the outside are not allowed to go in. keep in mind, police are trying to figure out exactly what happened here. again, we know that one person is dead, one person is injured due to a shooting. however, we do not know if it is students or teachers or an outsider is involved. keep in mind, prince george's county police spokesperson has yet to come. right now, we see a mobile command center coming here. officers plan to be out here for quite sometime. they'll be coming in and out of that command unit. there are students on the other side of that big command unit, which is black,

side over there. one told me she heard shots. that's all we know at this point. i'm still trying to figure out what role, if any, a pickup truck played. there's a pickup truck by the auditorium. i also see detectives inside the building looking through the front window, and they're talking amongst themselves. that's all we know at this particular point. again, waiting for more information from police as we cover this developing story. back to you in the studio. >> shomari, thank you. he got the maximum, a maryland man who shot and killed his stepfather learned his sentence today. >> the victim was a police detective. the shooting, a dispute over yard work. tonight we're seeing newly released surveillance video of the fateful day. we're hearing emotional reaction from both sides of that family. >> reporter: today, antoine james got the

time served. this case divided a family. the sentencing brings closure, but there is still a lot of pain. >> i'm happy he got ten years, even though it feel like it should be way more. >> reporter: the daughter broke down after sentencing after the prince george's county courthouse. today antoine james got ten years for shooting to death his stepfather. >> ten years is not enough. >> reporter: the state's attorney's office released video of his violent death. antoine james shot him 18 times during a dispute over yard work at their home in 2015. james was charged with murder, but convicted of involuntary manslaughter last year. she said to her son,

demons are real. she believes her son's sentence was fair. >> people believe in angels, but they don't believe in demons. again, demons are real. >> reporter: that day three years ago split apart two families, but jamne newell thins she can finally move forward. >> i think i can finally get closure. >> i'm just happy that it is finally over so we can just heal. we don't have to deal with it anymore. >> reporter: with credit for time served, antoine james has about seven years left in prison, although he could get out on parole in about two. what antoine james has said to his mother about the shooting since being in jail and also how she is trying to make something positive out of this whole awful situation. allegations of rape tonight at spellman college down in atlanta, and it is causing a

this all began with an anonymous twitter account called raped at spellman. the person said she left spellman after being raped by four students at spellman university. she says the dean of the historically black college brushed her off. since the posting, others have shared their thoughts with the hashtag raped by spellman or raped by moore house. montgomery county police released this sketch of a man they say tried to sexually assault a 16-year-old girl. the man followed the girl into her apartment complex on castle boulevard in the briggs-cheney area yesterday. he grabbed her, expose

and tried to pull down her pants. she screamed and her brother heard and came to help. he ran off. the company is facing a new lawsuit. the attorney general filed the suit against blue skies films. he says the company collected advance payments for wedding videos and then failed to provide the videos, refused to give out refunds. brides said they paid thousands of dollars for that service. there will be a hearing in this case in july. the quest, more like a question, right now for the washington caps. >> on the brink of elimination, but there is still hope. >> you're right. there is still hope. in fact, 8.7%. that's the percentage number
