this morning. reports have surfaced that suggest top penn state coaches and administrators and officials including the late joe paterno knew of a sexual abuse allegation against jerry sandusky as early as 1976. the claim emerged in a dispute over whether the university or its insurance company to pay penn state's share of about $60 million in settlements for 26 men who say san dudusky abused m when they were children. in the court documents the judge wrote in passing that the insurance company claimed, quote. paterno family issued a statement that read, in part, because of a single sentence in a court record of an insurance case, joe paterno's reputation has once again been smeared with unsubstantiated 40-year-old allegation. in response to willinged

demanding a full public review of the facts. penn state released this statement. sandusky was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison in october of 2012 for abusing ten boys. paterno died in 2012 and was never charged with any crimes. terrifying moments during the kentucky derby parade. look at this gunfire erupting and sending frightens people running for cover. police ran to get things under coal. two boys were taken into custody shortly after the shooting. police say there is no reason to believe this was a random act of violence. the shooting injured a

14-year-old girl. according to louisville police, the injuries are not life-threatening. members of the republican party are waking up to an enter party civil war. the gop is butting heads over donald trump's presidential nomination. it was a shocker late yesterday when house speaker paul ryan joined other prominent republicans against trump saying flatly, he is not ready to support or endorse trump just yet. well, since then, illinois governor bruce rauner would not support trump but addleson and rick perry say they are all in on trump. nbc's katy tur has more. >> reporter: donald trump may be headed to cleveland to accept the republican party's nomination, but the leader of the party paul ryan says he cannot support or endorse yet. >> i'm not there right now. and i hope to, though. and i want to. but i think what is required is

>> reporter: the speaker of the house saying trump needs to live up to the gop legacy. >> we hope that our nominee, as far as it be reaganesque. >> it calls into the future of the party. whether or not the gop past november will be able to be a viable national party that can elect presidents. >> reporter: ryan's former running mate mitt romney announced he would not go to the gop convention and joining presidents george h.w. bush and george w. bush and saying they would not endorse. john mccain said he would support the party's nominee but privately worried the fund-raisers about his own re-election bid in arizona. trump is still drawing record crowds. thousands waiting in the rain in west virginia. a state filled with white working class voters. to win in november, trump will need to capitalize on that demographic, making states obama won in 2012 like ohio,

michigan, turn red again. while mitigating a potential loss in arizona, a republican stronghold and home to a large latino pooppulation turned off his comments. hillary clinton immediately firing back with video in english and spanish targeting trump's deportation plan. >> trump responded to paul ryan with this statement. i perhaps in the future we can work together and come to an agreement what is best for the american people. they have been treated so badly for so long it is about time for politicians to put them first. hillary clinton fired back against trump's cinco de mayo comment. speaking at a california event she focused almost entirely on immigration reform. >> now every election is a choice and

donald trump doubled down on his plan to create a deportation force to round up millions of people. that is actually what he said. he has pledged in his first days in office to scrap doca el dapa and finalize a design for a giant wall on the border. well, the best way to prevent that from happening is to make sure he never gets near the white house! >> and while clinton went on the attack against her likely general election rival, her democratic primary opponent bernie sanders continued to campaign in west virginia. he held his final rally there last night. west virginia will allot 37 democratic delegates in its tuesday primary and guam holds its primary tomorrow awarding 12 delegates there. hazmat teams are trying to clean up a

houston. hundreds were forced to evacuate or shelter in place. nbc's janet shamlian has more. >> reporter: explosions amid a massive fire rocking houston. >> a bomb. >> reporter: starting in a home the glaze quickly engulfed a neighboring industrial building. inside ammunition and drums of chemicals that blew up like fireworks. >> explosion was big. you could feel it. it should around a little bit. >> reporter: with smoke spilling hazardous material in the air, a shelter was placed and people were ordered to stay inside. more than 600 students evacuated from a nearby elementary school. the fire went to four alarm with almost 200 firefighters on the front line. fighting the flames amid high winds and flying debris. >> that thing flew over and big ball of fire erupted and

zone. firefighters say it's a miracle no one was hurt. officials are trying to determine what chemical exploded. meanwhile, residents are being told to avoid runoff from the fire. spacex successfully launched a falcon 9 rocket overnight from cape canaveral in florida. it was part of a mission to send a japanese communication satellite into orbit. the first stage of the rocket also successfully landed in the atlantic ocean on board a ship called of course i still love you. successfully landing the rocket was a major priority of the mission and the second successful ocean landing for spacex. accou company reps weren't optimistic of the touchdown with the rate of speed this rocket was traveling. arsenio hall has filed a lawsuit against sinead o'connor. o'

a facebook post writing that prince was a long time hard drug user who got his drugs over the decades from hall. according to the associated press, hall's lawsuit calls the accusations fabricated laws. you may remember a hit she had which was written and composed by prince. poor puppy. animal control services, they had to be called to the scene of a pup stuck in a bathtub drain! apparently the dog named mr. russells got his paw stuck after a shampoo. rescuers had to spin the pooch. two of mr. russell's toes were sworn but otherwise he is doing okay. that is one way to get a dog out of a drain. a proud looking mr. russells even posed with this picture with two of his rescuers. he looks a little shell-shocked there. let's

over a thousand firefighters are still battling a monster wildfire in alberta, canada and continues to consume an area larger than the state of -- new york city i should say. three more communities were forced to evacuate yesterday and adding to the residents who had to abandon their homes. no casualty, remarkably. canada's government has pledged support to match all donations to the red cross. two fires in the second busiest subway system. the first fire was caught on the rails and that closed two metro stations and three service lines and comes six weeks after the metro had an unprecedented one-day shutdown for emergency safety inspection. police in ohio are asking the community to help identify this man. he assaulted a clerk to steal cash. he was able to m

a fatal stabbing investigation under way in alexandria. >> erika gonzalez is at the live desk with the details. >> we're just getting this information here to the live desk. this stabbing happened around 9:30 last night in alexandria on the 6,000 block of lincolnia road. police get to the scene and they find somebody be that has stab wounds. unfortunately, he did not survive. at this point we don't have an i.d. we'll continue to work on the story and bring you more development

the radar showing the rain. beltway at st. barnabas looking good. a live look at 270 coming up. in half an hour, metro riders will find out whether overnight safety work will pay off for their commute. two fiery situations shut down the federal center station. first a fire bomb and then on the third rail. the problems wrought delays on orange, blue and silver lines. megan mcgrath is live at federal center station where riders were promised a normal friday commute. good morning. >> reporter: and it looks like that will happen. we are sighing the trucks behind me here, just one work truck left here this morning. but when we pulled up about 15 minutes or so ago, we had a lot of trucks in the area, a lot of workers coming up out of the station. i shouted out are you done with the work and he said yes. so it looks like we're a go.

morning as promised. there were two separate incidents at the federal center metro station including one that was captured on security video. take a look. sparks and a flash right alongside the platform. very it is turning video. the other incident involves a burning piece of paper and the third rail causing smoke in the tunnel. service on the blue, orange and silver lines was suspended and emergency repairs performed. the decision made to close that metro station as well as the capitol south station so that those repairs could be done quickly and efficiently. everything appears to be on track with those repairs and it appears that we will open on time this morning. of course we'll be keeping an eye on it and bring you updates as we get them. but right now, if you use the station, it looks like you will be okay this morning. and delays for metro riders will get worse before this
