he may have gone about a sexual abuse allegation against jerry sandusky as early as 1976. "today" national correspondent craig melvin is here with the story. >> good morning. another twist in the long and public scandal that brought down the penn state football program. according to a court order filed wednesday, legendary head coach joe paterno knew about an allegation against sandusky 40 years ago. n . >> reporter: new allegations against a once-beloved coach. it's between an insurance company and penn state over accusers. the insurance company claims in 1976, a child allegedly reported to joseph paterno he was sexually molested by sandusky. a 2001 incident was reported to officials. he later told the grand jury he didn't know of any other incidents involving sandusky.

72-year-old sandusky is back in court this week, seeking a new trial. he's currently serving 30 to 60 years in prison for 45 counts of child sex abuse, dating back to the '90s. his lawyer reading a statement from sandusky on monday. >> i am an innocent man serving what amounts to a life sentence. people have betrayed, attacked and vilified family, supporters and me. >> one thing, thanks and pray a little bit for those victims. >> reporter: joe paterno was fired in the scandal that rocked the university over allegations that he didn't properly report concerns about sandusky to authorities. he was never charged with any crimes. >> coach! >> we are penn state. that's right. >> reporter: the former head coach, who was admired and cherished at penn state, told reporters days before he was fired that, in hindsight, i w

his family releasing a statement late thursday reading, in part, joe paterno's reputation has been smeared with an unsubstantiated, 40-year-old allegation. in response to the allegation and the media hype, the paterno family is demanding a public review of the facts. >> a spokesperson for penn state told nbc news it was aware of the allegations but the legal case and confidentiality precludes us from discussing these matters at all. we are sensitive to the needs and to honor the privacy concerns of potential victims. >> craig, thank you very much. for the first time in nearly four decades, north korea is holding a meeting of congress. speculation mounts about a new generation of leaders that soon could be put in place. nbc's chief global correspondent bill neilly

to do this? >> well, i moved from silicon valley to utah and i was missing the ocean. i didn't know what to do at first. then i started climbing mountains just for fun. and then one mountain led to another and we got bigger. we climbed denali in alaska with my good climbing partner, steve gasser. and while we were stuck in a storm actually at 17,000 feet for six days. we talked about, hey, what do you think about maybe climbing the seven summits and could we do it? >> that's not the reaction most people would have. they'd say we're never doing this again, but you said let's go higher. was there something inside you that made you go higher around sail farther? >> even as a kid i liked hiking a little further or sailing on a challenge on a windy day. there i just felt like i had a little more gas in the tank so i just wanted to see how far my body would take me. >> you just finished this about three weeks ago. april 17th.
