outside of the school and today's shopping center murders. today at 11:00 begins with breaking news. in less than 24 hours ulalio tordil went from being a wanted man for his estranged wife's murder to the main suspect in a series of shootings. good evening. >> what remains unclear is what motivated the former federal protective services officer to target people he didn't know. the first shots today were fired outside of montgomery mall around 11:15 this morning, killing one and injuring two others. 35 minutes later, another woman was found dead at the aspen hills shopping center. we have team coverage starting with jackie bensen and new details that link the three shootings. jackie? >> reporter: sources tell news 4 the same gun, the same gun was used in all three shooting

incidents. a killing spree that ended right here. >> look. they got him. >> people at the northgate shopping center wiped their lens at the shocking sight. >> i saw a car hit another car and what's going on. saw everybody hop out. >> looks like they ran in to it. >> less than three hours after and less than a block away from a second montgomery county shooting, a security camera captured images of 62-year-old ulalio tordil. he is seen walking from a boston market with food in his hand. he seems unaware that undery cover officers had him. police chief tom manger said it was a lookout for that silver hyundai

yesterday's murder in beltsville that helped to stop the deadly rampage. >> they had this individual under surveillance. when the individual walked back to his car, the plain clothes officers were able to take him in to custody without question. >> it is tragic we were not able to intervene prior to additional victims being harmed but i'm pleased with the fact this individual has been apprehended. >> right now ulalio tordil is facing charges of murder of his wife in prince georges county but he is being questioned by detectives here in montgomery county tonight and additional charges are pending. live in aspen hill, jackie bensen, news 4. >> our coverage tonights t continues with kristin wright. >> she talked to a family of a man who was killed trying to help one of the shooting victims. >> reporter: this family is devastated and cannot believe howhe

that. his name was malcolm winfell. tonight his sister left flowers at the montgomery mall. this is a large family, a close family. malcolm was a husband. he was a father of two children, a boy and girl who is just about 20 graduate from high school. malcolm's brother said he was a true family man and one of four siblings. he worked as a handy man and was in fact out to lunch today at the mall when he was shot in the parking lot. malcolm's family tells me it was in his nature to want to help people. police say that is what he was doing. malcolm and his friend rushed in to help the woman who was shot first. the gunman then shot malcolm and his friend. right now that friend is in critical condition. doctors and nurses tried but could not save malcolm's life. the

understand, is expected to be okay. tonight, we are still trying to find out so much more about the woman shot and killed outside of the giant grocery store in aspen hills. equally as sad and we're so sure as shocking to her loved ones, as well. in a strange coincidence, we believe malcolm went to high point high school, which as you may know is where police say the suspect shot and killed his wife yesterday. malcolm was 44 years old. doreen, back to you. we have learned three protective orders were taken out against ulalio tordil and one includes allegations he physically abused two children. his wife went to court last month to seek protection and said he subjected the children to intense military-type discipline like making them do pushupsr

closet. she said that he physically abused her and threatened he'd hurt her if she left. he owned several handguns and rifles and knew how to use them. he had a long career in federal law enforcement from the general services administration to i.c.e. and a gs-14 with homeland security federal protective service. he had oversight over officers guarding protective buildings and embassies but in the last two months he was plafsed on administrative leave and ordered 4i78 to turn in his badge and weapon. eight years ago he was accused of trying to defraud a federal program aimed at helping law enforcement officers. he got a $26,000 discount on a property in hyattsville but didn't live in the house or proper live report it. he had to pay hud $16,000. the "washington post" reports he was

happened to the spot where the beltway sniper shooting began 14 years ago. this parking lot in front of the giant grocery store is where a woman was killed in her car. across the street, outside of this boston market is where police swarmed in and arrested tordil. look at this. this michael's craft store up here, yards away is where beltway snipers john allen muhammad and malvo fired in 2002. it was an eerie feeling for officers returning to the scene today. >> when they committed the murders here in aspen hill they went and the did not leave the area and ate in the same restaurant where we had the surveillance today which was an irony not lost by me. >> a michael's cashier was narrowly missed in 2002. but over the

local tragedy that haunted them may soon one day be solved. the news 4 i-team's tisha thompson traveled to florida to see why a murder history still matters. they never talked about it. that's what ralph remembers about growing up in bethesda in the '30s. it wasn't until he was a teen he began to hear wispers his father had been a suspect in a car barn murder, up with of the region's most famous murder mysteries. >> my dad was home asleep and came and got me out of bed. they want to know where his uncle was. >> reporter: his father worked at the car barn and a ticket station on connecticut avenue in chevy chase. along with his uncle emory smith. the station's night watchman. on a cold january night, police say there was a robbery. more than

today's money stolen. the clerk murdered inside of a locked office with no sign of emory. >> they found him the next day in the park. >> reporter: ralph smith said his father was quickly cleared of his uncle's murder. he said his dad and three uncles continued to work for the trolley. >> they thought it was an inside job. >> reporter: as time passed, the police had given up on finding the killer. until they saw our i-team story showing how montgomery county detective stafford is working on the oldest coldest case. they said 245i lost contact with the smith family and one sure if anyone was alive. >> i called dad and said did you know they have a whole case on uncle emory. he said they have very little and i said no, they have a lot. >> they had no idea that it contained bullet

>> in 1935, people didn't walk around and photograph everything. i was a big deal to photograph the desk, the shoe prints. they didn't know what we know now. and to collect that and take meticulous notes they did a good job. >> reporter: she should know. she runs a firm in florida that worked on 500 murder cases herself and says to find evidence this old is extremely rare. >> it tells me they have taken extraordinarily good care of that case file. i'm grateful for my family, for my dad especially. so i want to thank you for to them for that in ralph moved to florida to be closer to karen. at 81 years old. he's the last of his generation 0 who remembers what it was like after the murder. >> the case is probably never going to be solved. >> i'm more of an optimis
