fewer passengers. virginia's transportation secretary will give us a status report later this morning. hundreds of grocery workers will rally today to keep some local giant stores open. the workers will rally at 11:00 this morning outside of their union offices in landover. they are fighting the possible closure of eight stores. that's because of a proposed merger between giant food and food lion. federal regulators will have to approve the merger before it is complete. nearly 50 puppies rescued from a northern virginia pet store have new homes this morning. the fairfax county animal shelter says people started lining up at 6:00 a.m. yesterday to adopt the puppies. all 46 of them now have forever homes. the dogs were rescued from the dreamy puppy store in chantilly in november and treated by veterinarians to be adopted. the store has now closed. all this week we are cracking the code to better sleep. and this morning we are taking a look at sleep disorders. >> insomnia is the leading deep diso i

the armed suspect inside the townhouse was the woman's wife. >> thankfully, a neighbor was -- allowed us to use their residence to go onto their deck and make contact with the victim to make sure she was okay. >> police say the armed suspect turned the gun on herself but she's expected to be okay. three maryland brothers are now facing attempted murder charges for their roles in the death of a prince george's county police detective. the grand jury returned indictments for michael, malik and elijah ford yesterday for the march 13th attack. michael ford opened fire in an ambush attack outside of the district's 3 station and the brothers recorded the shootings on their cell phone. jaqay coalson died after a fellow officer shot him. and demarus

arrested last week after knocking on the couple's home last year, forced their way inside and ransacked the house. the robbery happened back in february. nickels is being held on $300,000 bond. 5:35 now. to a consumer watch report on counterfeit checks. somebody got ahold of a maryland woman's checking account number and started writing fake checks. that's when she turned to nbc4 responds for help. susan hogan has her story. >> reporter: imagine her surprise to get a copy of the checks back from her bank. the problem is she didn't write any of them and there were hundreds of dollars in fraudulent checks. so jean fippin got her statements from her bank. the thieves got her routing number but her name and address were removed and replaced with a stranger's information. someone made fraudulent check purchases totaling more than $800. not sure what to do, jean and

>> reporter: good morning to you both. so many questions remain this morning as to exactly what led to this violence. but i want to give you a live look at the mall here, this is where this all came to a close. you can see the doorway of that macy's boarded up this morning. the district attorney here calling these attacks horrific. now, what we do know this morning is according to their office 28-year-old arthur derosa of taunton is dead shot by an off-duty deputy sheriff inside the mall after intervening. they say that derosa crashed a car here into macy's. this is the silver city galleria mall. he assaulted several people here in the store before stabbing two people inside another store, including a 56-year-old taunton man who was killed. while this

mall, this began around 7:00 last night when derosa allegedly crashed his call on myra street in taunton, went into a house there and apparently stabbed two women and injured both of them, an 80-year-old victim, she ended up later dying from those injuries. now authorities believe that all of these acts appear right now to be random. they don't believe that the suspect actually had any connection to these victims. of course, they are now investigating all of this. we're live right now in taunton, massachusetts, katelyn flint, back to you. the shootings at the high school last thursday killed 44-year-old gladys tordil. she came to pick up her two daughters here. without any other family here and because they are minors, they are in foster

>> reporter: exactly, eun. representatives for donald trump will be here to lay the groundwork for a meeting that will happen on thursday with house speaker paul ryan. now trump is going to try to convince him and other party leaders that he's not only republican but he's the right republican to be president. now donald trump coming fresh off victories in west virginia and nebraska. he has a tough road unifying a very divided republican party. the meeting with paul ryan thursday, ryan actually said, quote, we shouldn't just pretend that our party is unified when we're not. this as senator ted cruz hinted he may jump back in the race if the political landscape changes again. he says he would reconsider. trump has now made the pivot going after hillary clinton. both trump and senator bernie sanders are after the same target there, hillary clinton. now sanders won west virginia's primary yesterday but is still behind in the delegate count. and hillary clinton is in a very tough spot. she can't ignore the number of

right now for the search for a 9-year-old girl and the man who abducted her from school continues in tennessee. the girl was taken from her rogersville school under false pretenses a week ago. police say her uncle gary simpson took her. police have released photos of items that simpson bought from walmart before he took the girl. they include lipstick and a camping chair. our nbc affiliate in richmond reported last week that they may be in the virginia area. police in montgomery county are ramping up efforts to find the man who sexually assaulted a teenager girl. the attack happened last wednesday in the bridge cheney community in silver spring not far from route 29. the girl told police the man followed her from her school bus and into her apartment building. he then tried to take her phone. he took off his pants and then tried to remove her's. now police need your help finding him. >> he was last seen leaving in a blue four-door or two-door compact vehicle. >> the young
