>> i'm glad you dove into the box score there. >> i've been working on my baseball lingo all morning. we'll start with politics. all eyes on that. building the rnc headquarters on capitol hill right there. this morning the meeting between house speaker paul ryan and donald trump will take place there. then later trump will meet with other political leaders, some of whom have been reluctant to embrace him. we'll talk with former vice president dan quayle. he's here exclusively. but let us begin with correspondent peter alexander. peter, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. the next few hours will be pivotal to the republican party. donald trump likes to tout the fact that he's now won nearly 11 million votes nationwide, but he's yet to secure the support of one man who happens to be the most powerful republican leader in the land. after donald trump's takeover on the republican party this morning, house speaker paul

ryan, donald trump headed to today's meeting when asked who is the leader of the gop. >> i would say paul ryan. i would say paul for the time being and maybe for a long time. >> ryan and previs notably from wisconsin, the last one to reject trump at the voting booth. >> we need a leader in our party. after prit marthe primary, that to take some effort. >> reporter: ryan involved with trump supporters. the longer ryan waits to endorse him, the more divided the party gets. trump also meets with senate republican leaders, among them ted cruz. >> there are no plans for us to meet. i have not heard from donald trump. >> reporter: nor, apparently, has john mccain after calling for trump to take back this controversial comment. >> he's a war hero because he was captured. i like people that weren't captured. >> reporter: trump acknowledging

defending his words. >> there are many people who like what i said. after i said that, my poll numbers went up seven points. >> reporter: meanwhile 2012 nominee mitt romney is blasting trump for refusing to release his tax returns until an irs audit is over, which may not be until after the election. romney calling it disqualifying, suggesting there is a bombshell in them. trump could become the first major party nominee in 40 years not to make his returns public. >> the tax return, you learn very, very little. >> reporter: but he demanded the same transparency of romney four years ago. >> mitt has to get those tax returns out. >> reporter: trump's democratic rival hillary clinton looking to capitalize. >> my husband and i have released 33 years of tax returns. so you have to ask yourself, why doesn't he want to release them? yeah, well, we're going to find out. >> reporter: as bernie sanders wednesday pushed back as nbc news' andrea mitchell asked for pushback from bh

trump's campaign. >> in every state that we have won, in 19 states, we have had to take on the entire democratic establishment. please do not moan to me about hillary clinton's problems. >> reporter: back out live now at the rnc headquarters, the outcome of this meeting could echo well beyond this campaign season. in the near term, questions will be raised whether paul ryan stays as chair of this summ convention, but later down the road, will ryan be picking up the pieces if donald trump loses this fall. with us now exclusively, former vice president dan quayle. mr. vice president, it's great to see you. we haven't seen you in a while. >> it's been a while. >> it has. bring us up to date here. when all of this started a year or so ago, the 17 or so gop candidates standing on that stage, could you have imagined with governors and senators in that group that it would end up withal

inexperienced, businessman, real estate mogul capturing the republican nomination? >> no. and i don't think very many people did except himself, his family. there are a few people who said watch donald trump, but i don't think anybody expected him to win the nomination. and quite frankly, i'm not quite sure that he really thought he could win. but he's a winner. he knocked off 16 republican candidates. he is going to be the nominee, the presumptive nominee, and now the party is going to have to unify around someone that they did not expect to be their nominee. >> obviously this candidacy of donald trump has exposed some fault lines in the republican party. there are some people who call themselves never trumpers, and then there are some on the trump train. which category do you fall into? >> i was the republican vice president. i've been a republican all my life. i'm going to support the nominee. and i predict that most people in my position or people that have been in the republican party for a long time will rally around the

will eventually support donald trump publicly. i hope that happens, because we do have to be unified. if we're not unified, then we have a real lot of trouble ahead. >> let me ask you about qualifications. in all honesty, your qualifications were questioned when you became vice president. people worried whether you had the experience to be vice president or president if that would happen. do you think donald trump has the experience, the knowledge and the temperament to be president? >> we're going to find out. >> right now do you think, though? >> right now he's the nominee. there's a great majority in the republican party that clearly believes that. i believe he has the capability to be president of the united states, and he's into a new phase now. he's gotten through the nomination. that's one. and quite frankly, the nomination is a much lower bar than being the nominee. now he's got to show the american people not that he can beat o

got to build upon his base, he's got to move forward, and he's got to articulate a vision that the american people say, yes, he is qualified. i don't know what the answer is to that for most of the people, but clearly he's got good political instincts, he has a good business background, he's a winner and he's unusual. he's obviously very different. he's not going to play by the rules. it's a different situation, but i think that he can win. >> is there anything about how he's conducted the race so far in terms of tone and temperament that gives you pause or gives you concern, or if you had him sitting across from you, you would say, you know what? maybe not do it that way. >> here's what i think he will do and needs to do. he really needs to get more involved in the policy. he made a speech on foreign policy. he's got to make another speech on foreign policy, he's got to make speeches on the economy. he's got to show that he's presidential. he's not running in a primary

to winhe general election. >> he spoke yesterday and said, don't expect me to be a different person. he has a mandate from his followers to run a fiery outsiders campaign. it doesn't sound like he's going to do what you're suggesting he should do. >> he can run that fiery outsiders campaign, but he has to realize -- look, he's been around this for a long time. he actually suggested he should be the vice president in 1998 when george bush selected me. so he's followed politics. he knows full well it's a different campaign once you're the nominee. and i fully expect fiery, yes, unconventional, yes, but it's going to be different. it has to be. it's a different type of campaign. he's running in the general election. he's running probably against hillary clinton, although there's the news story. we know who our nominee is going to be before the democrats know who their nominee is going

australian official. flight 370 disappeared two years ago with 330 people on board. the latest plane fragments were found on the beach of south africa and mauritus. an investigation being launched this morning into the violent arrest of a suspect following a high-speed chase through two states. tamron joins us with more on that. good morning, tamron. >> good morning, guys. that chase started in massachusetts and ended in neighboring new hampshire. when the driver finally gave up, officers pounced. dramatic aerial footage captured it all. police officers repeatedly punching a suspect who appeared to be surrendering after a high-speed chase. the man, 50-year-old richard simone, was wanted on multiple warrants, including assault and battery. when officers in massachusetts tried to pull over his pickup truck wednesday afternoon, police say he refused to

starting in holden, massachusetts, the chase ended nearly 50 miles away in nashua, new hampshire when two of simone's tires were blown out. but it is what happened after the chase that is raising concern. simone exits the truck and appears to give himself up. as he lies face down on the pavement, officers started throwing punches. simone's sister is furious. >> it is very shocking, to say the least. disturbing to see when someone willingly gets out of the vehicle, goes to their knees, goes flat out on their stomach, it didn't seem like there was anything apparent in his hands or anything like that. it was kind of very shocking. >> reporter: in a statement the massachusetts state police said, quote, the pursuit, like all pursuits that involve massachusetts state police, will be reviewed by the department's pursuit committee. officials say they will also investigate whether the level of force used to apprehend simone was appropriate. obviousl

example of cameras, whether they're on a helicopter or cell phone, change the dynamic. this is under investigation. we'll continue to follow it, of course. >> not the last we'll hear from that. tamron, thank you. now the latest on the death of the music icon prince. a secret memorial was held for him in beverly hills last night. we're also learning more about the doctor who treated prie in his final days. stephanie gosk is following it for us this morning. stephanie, good morning. >> reporter: prince's nearest and dearest gathering as quietly as a group like that could to pay tribute to his life. meanwhile, law enforcement is telling nbc news that it was the dea that was here earlier in the week executing a search warrant. they are still trying to figure out how prince obtained prescription painkillers. wednesday night in l.a., stars like gwen stefani, spike lee and others turned out for what was called a celebration of

was a private gathering. it comes as we're learning more details this morning about the local doctor who treated prince and came to paisley park with test results hours after the superstar's death according to a police search warrant. licensed since 1997, dr. michael shulenberg has a clean practicing record in minnesota. the place where he was employed said the doctor no longer works for him. they say he is no longer employed there. in an assisted living home where the doctor was contracted to do work said it was surprised prince was shown as schulenberg's patient. they said, we have begun the process to replace this physician on our team despite this development. it showed dr. schulenberg was

already being replaced for unrelated reasons, a process that began april 5, weeks before prince's death. attempts to reach dr. schulenberg was unsuccessful. his attorney isn't talking. kurt johnson said prince went to a local hospital and received fluids during his visit. prince's rock band worked for the superstar in the early '90s and helped manage paisley park. johnson was a trainer at this local gym. multiple employees say he is on leave because he was so close to prince. nbc news learned that kirk johnson is now being represent by kurt tyler in minneapolis who specializes in criminal defense. tyler declined to comment on the case. they are saying they released that search warrant with details about dr.

mistake. it should have been sealed along with other court documents in this case. they are blaming it on human error. let's turn now to that piece of sports history we mentioned at the top of the show. washington nationals' matt scherzer striking out 20 batters last night to put his place in the record books. >> 20 strikeouts for matt scherzer! >> in the nation's capitols history has been made. he had the most strikeouts in a game. the fans and the announcers were electric. >> goosebumps. did they bring it up? >> i don't know. >> and so was scherzer. the 31-year-old ace is now on

the fire that started the deadly explosion at the texas fertilizer plant back in 2013 was intentionally set. the blast at the west fertilizer company killed 13 people, injured many and leveled homes, businesses and schools. federal investigators announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in that case. take a look at this. a california man lucky to be alive. police say he was street racing when his car flipped and burst into flames. the manager of a nearby mattress store saw the fire, ran in and pulled the unconscious man to safety. >> lucky he did. the cannes film festival underway this morning, but this year the glamour of that event is being overshadowed somewhat by controversy. woody allen's movie is using that festival to blast his father and the media.

stories here on "today," but the focus is on that essay he wrote for the hollywood reporter. it was published just before the cannes film festival. the intent was controversial. woody allen on the red carpet at cannes, his new movie opening the glitzy festival in france. this morning his son speaking out against his famous father, writing a scathing essay in the hollywood reporter. his targets? his father and the media, specifically how the media covers sexual assault. allen was accused in 1992 of sexually assaulting pharaoh's sister dylan when she was a little girl. i believe my sister, pharaoh writes. this was always true as a brother who trusted her and even at five years old was troubled by our father's strange behavior around her, climbing into her bed in the middle of the night, forcing her to suck his thumb. al

♪ stand by me welcome back, everyone. we're wrapping up our design your life series this morning, so after tackling the outside of your home over the last couple of days, now we're sprucing up the inside. abby larson, the creator of style meets pretty living, is here with some inexpensive ideas. abby, it's good to see you. >> you, too. >> inexpensive, they're not going to take a lot of time and they'll make a big difference especially as the warm weather hits. >> they are, and some of these trends are very expensive in the stores. we're doing these same trends for a lot less money, starting with metallic and gold. >> marble and metallic. >> you normally see these with coffee tables and great lamps. we're going to try to make these right here. you need two different supplies, gold leaf paper and marble contact paper. >> you've already done the gold leaf.

how hard is that? >> all you need is some seal it. >> and it doesn't have to look perfect. >> no, no, messy is fine. now we're going to add our contact paper. if you flip it over, you see we started it for you right here at the end. you're going to lay that right on top of your vase. you kind of hug it next to the gold leaf. here's the tricky part. you want to leave that paper intact on the back, and you're going to take your credit card beside you and we're going to put it to good use. this is just getting all the bubbles out. you're going to rub it as you pull the paper off. that makes sure it gets a nice, even, clean look. as you work your way around, the end result looks like this. >> how long should this take, start to finish? >> no more than an hour. >> do the comparison for me. if i went out and bought this vase in the store, what would it cost versus what we've spent here? >> it's going to start at $100, maybe 200, but the best thing is if you invest in the supplies, the projects are endless. you have that great bar cart, same set of supplies. you can even do a mouse pad

right here so you in a very small way. >> bringing blooms into a room. >> yeah! flower power is everywhere right now. it's really versatile. you see it on your artwork, you see it on your upholstery. we're making a fun accent pillow. you need stressful fabric. this is perfect. work your way in concentric circles around the pillow. once you have your glue down, you can lay the edge of your fabric right on top so it sits up nice and high, and you just start building your flower out. as you work your way around and around and around, you can go as big as you want, you'll see the end result will look like a big, beautiful flower. >> how much fabric do you need to make something like this? >> you need a couple yards. a twin bed smeet heet is actual perfect amount. >> it will cost us what?

all the ingredients are going to be on the website, but we need ingredients, chocolate and and oreos. we're going to start with a little bit of butter. do you want to add in the chocolate? >> dump the whole thing in? >> dump the whole thing in, unless you want to snag one for yourself. >> i do, and actually, i already have. you don't need a double boiler? >> no, but at this point you can turn off the heat because the heat is going to be enough for the chocolate to melt nicely. >> and you don't want it to burn. >> exactly. while that's doing its thing, we're going to add sugar and eggs. you want to beat that until it doubles in size, like five minutes, six minutes. >> you have the whisk attachment on there. >> exactly, the magic of television. i think we might have one double in size, though. >> that's what that should look like.

>> exactly. it should look light and airy. we'll get that while it does its own thing. we have all the eggs here. do you want to do a little figure 8 action in there? >> i don't know that i can. >> you slowly pour it and i'll stir it. you pour, and as you're pouring, i don't want to lose any air that's in that delicious mix, and this is a great thing to get the kids in the kitchen and get them into the mixing a bit. >> by the way, we have our taste testers downstairs. are you guys loving it or what? >> this is amazing. >> this is memorial day weekend right here. >> they're in their happy place. what does the figure 8 thing do? >> it just makes it so you incorporate all the ingredients without knocking all the air out of it. leave a little in there because someone will want to lick the bowl. keep the air in there. we have it already sifted.

keep the egg in tha place it on. it's a beautiful, beautiful light batter. there are a couple stages to bake this. it's not hard, there's just a little cook time involved. you're going to spread this into a brownie pan. you want to make sure you have a nice, even layer. and then once you have got that on the pan, you parbake it like 15 minutes in the oven. >> meanwhile -- >> meanwhile -- >> -- in the cheesecake department. >> pop that in with that cream cheese. this is an incredibly versatile cheesecake mix. we're going to use it with ours, but you can make it seasonal, you can switch oreos out with peanut butter cups, or with junior minutts and really make this your own. once you've beaten it, you can add eggs and cream, add a little

vanilla, and you'll end up with i'll add some oreos with that creamy mix. >> then you put the cheesecake layer on top of the layer we've already baked? >> right on top. >> is there anything better than this? you can see it's nice and delicious and you want to pour it over your cheesecake. this is kind of an anything goes recipe. over it goes, and we spread it out. now, that one needs to bake for like 20 minutes. >> so you're not overbaking because now the brownie layer is getting another baking? >> we're only going to partially bake the brownies. what you end up with is a spongy texture so you have a line of brownie on the bottom and a line of chocolate on top. the brownie mixture is getting a little firm, so you pop it in the microwave for about 20 seconds. do you want to do the honors? >> sure. it doesn't have to be a figure 8, though?
