good morning, everyone. i'm angie goff. >> and i'm david culver. your plans this afternoon might get rained out. i know. we're tired of it, too. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein tracking how soon the thunderstorms will move in. what are we thinking, tom? >> not probably until around 3:00 or so in the metro area. between know and then, get in the things you've postponed because of rain. it will be dry. sunshine now. showers are beginning to move in from the ohio valley into western pennsylvania, west virginia. still a long way away but tracking into virginia and maryland and the district generally around 2:00 or so in the shenandoah valley. 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. the immediate metro area. the hour-by-hour breakdown coming up in a few minutes. the severe weather threats when the storms do come through, generally are the most threat, going to be a brief, strong gust of wind. maybe a 50 mile-an-hour gust of wind. maybe small hail, but a

very low risk of tornadoes or any flooding as the storms roll through later this afternoon. >> thank you, tom. time, 9:00 on the dot. developing right now, the taliban is claiming responsibility for a suicide bombing. this is in afghanistan. looking at new video into the newsroom of the attack which happened this morning. it targeted a police training base, we're told. at least three police officers were killed. 10 other officers and 2 civilians were hurt. ♪ amazing grace how sweet ♪ >> last night thousands from around the country gathered on the national mall to remember those officers who lost their lives. there was a candlelight vigil and roll call of the fallen as new names were added to the national law enforcement memorial which is right here in the district. just one of many tributes happening during national police week. news 4 derrick ward joining us from a

right now to honor law enforcement. hey there, derrick. >> reporter: good morning. this is probably the most physical of the law enforcement week or the police week here the 5k. just getting underway. a runner's view. what it looks like. so many people. getting to the starting line. this by the national building museum main entrance. thousands of runners taking part, and there is actually a 60-year-old man running to raise money for the family of a fallen trooper, and raising money for the officer down memorial, raising money for line of duty death foundation and families of fallen officers. of course, with this race going on, most of this course will be south along third street. if you come down this way you have to make plans to work around, rolling road blocks and police there to get you around it, but, of course, it is a somber event, but one that expends a lot of sweat equity. live at the national

news 4 mark seagraves was of the panelists. the democratic primary is june 14th. fight the bite. a message from the department of health hosting a mosquito prevention and control community event. it is happening today to focus on the zika virus. it's happening at the emory recreation center in southwest washington. and the event goes from 10:00 this morning, starts in a little less than an hour until 1:00 this afternoon. puerto rico announced its first case of zika-related problems. the virus is known to cause birth defects like microcephaly. that's what health officials in puerto rico confirmed in the fetus. the countdown has started. metro's safe track program begins just under three weeks from today. it starts friday june 3rd. part of the plan involves ending service at midnight every night. the last time you can take a

saturday of memorial day weekend. may 28th. >> a lot of people who work those hours aren't going to bar their parties or anything like that. they work. >> the problem -- >> metro is planning to temporarily shut down a stretch of the blue, orange and silver lines sometime next month. learning details about a deadly crash on route 301 south. maryland state police saying a driver lost control of his car and crossed the median in brandywine. it happened thursday night. an suv then hit a car and killed willow rice of clinton. she was in that car. seven others were taken to the hospital and treated. you can tell from this video here, the crash caused quite a backup for miles. we now know the name of a 14-year-old murder victim eric cokea cresto killed. a 17-year-old murdered him. now, according to the police, the suspe

town home on brazil circle as the boy's family. we don't know the suspect's name because he's a juvenile. he is expected to be tried as an adult in court. a show trial. what a lawyer for marine corps major said about the case against his client. major mark thompson had a primary hearing yesterday. he and his legal team walked out on that hearing. thompson is a former instructor at the u.s. naval academy facing a possible court-martial over accusations he had sex with multiple female midshipmen years ago. new questions how a navy trainee died are being raised. nbc news and the virginia pilot talked to several people about navy s.e.a.l. trainee derek lovelace. the navy said he died during a swimming exercise earlier this month. however, the people who talked with nbc news and the pilot say the exercise was known as combat tread. it involves instructors holding students under water were, and one sour s

he was rolling, this happened in california. so police say the suspect that you see there, 20-year-old rianna medina, taken into custody last night. all right? what you're looking at, her attempting to get away with two packages from the homeowner's front door. when asked about the packages, she insisted her mother lived at the home before he threatened to call the police. now, the police uploaded this video to their facebook page. it got over 800,000 hits, eventually leading to her arrest. she's facing one count of felony grand theft. well, we are getting new numbers in on the d.c. street car. according to the rndc, the street car has an average number of riders based on the length of its track. about 2,300 people ride the street car every weekday. that number is near the bottom of ridership levels for all light rail lines in the country. however, it's actually above average in riders per mile of track ahead of

his job, investigate misconduct. now he's on administrative leave and under investigation himself. guy morgan is the head of the fairbanks county fire and rescue department of professional standards. the office of professional standards, and the investigation comes after internal complaints about morgan's posts on facebook. a female firefighter filed suit accusing morgan of conducting an inept investigation saying she was sexually harass bud her supervisor and claims after she complained, she was punished. what a prom story. a group of ten people, headed to prom in this limo. when it hit a tree and caught fire another photo i believe. closer up. look at the damage done. >> wow. >> unbelievable nobody was hurt. get this, the kids were actually picked up by a nearby tolly car that took them to the dance. >> they were determined to get there. >> probably had the best prom night story ever. investigators believe an engine

>> announcer: and now your storm team 4 forecast. ah, the air is fresh and mild on this saturday morning. should the temperatures climb to the low 70s early afternoon, but there is storm team 4 radar showing showers now pulling out of ohio into pennsylvania, and west virginia. they'll be tracking closer to the metro area by early to mid-afternoon. i've got new hour-by-hour timing on the storms coming on through. we could get a few isolated storms this afternoon and much cooler weather sunday. more chances of rain getting into next week. a look at that all coming up in about five minutes. >> we will see you then, tom. thanks. you might be seeing more and more of the hash tag i hate the wait. if you're perusing social media. a record number of folks expected to head to the airports this summer. so far we have seen huge lines for security. look at that. some folks waiting hours. the tsa says, get to the airport early. also taking steps to try to

agents. you can also face stricter rules for carry-ones and bags. if those don't make a difference, some airlines threatened to replace government screeners with private workers. right now there's an investigation into a deadly train crash in california. an amtrak train slammed into a truck last night. look at the damage that it did. it nearly split that truck in half. three people died, and there were more than 200 people onboard that train. the engineer was the only person onboard who was hurt. then we have another scary story we're following. a small plane catching fire shortly after takeoff in tennessee. the pilot was flying with his two grandchildren. he was able to land the plane hard, and the three of them managed to escape before this happened. the plane went up in total flames. fairfax county police need your help trying to find a hit-and-run driver and put up this sign in burke, virginia. a few feet from where a man was struck and killy

this happened on thursday evening. the victim, 33-year-old matthew calendine stumbled into the lanes near cappella avenue and don't know why but they know a car hit him and then took off. an arizona sheriff held in contempt of court for violating orders to stop racially profiles lati latinos. sheriff arpaio targeted undocumented immigrants, allegedly. the contempt ruling stemmed from aclu's lawsuit where the court found arpaio's office illegally profiled latinos. arpaio repeatedly disobeyed the court's order to end these practices. and the first woman combat leader in the u.s. mail tear. talking about general lori robinson. on friday she took charge of

norad and u.s. northern command, a security cooperative between the u.s., mexico and canada. robinson was previously the commander of pacific air forces and one of just two female generals in the air force. hundreds of guests from the nordic nations are now on their way out of d.c. so they were here attending a dinner with president obama at the white house last night. the dinner honored the leaders of sweden, iceland, finland, denmark and norway. president obama had a little fun with them, too. >> i think we can all admit that the vikings could be a little rough. back at 9:25, and viral videos getting blamed for a rise in crime, specifically murder. now, murder rates are on it's rise in several cities. talking about chicago, dallas, l.a. the director of the fbi is worried police officers don't want to get caught on tape, if you will. he thinks that those concerns are keeping them in their cruisers instead of engages people. >> still is no evidence to substantiate the claim that the increase in violent crime is related to an unwillingness of police officers to do their job. >> all right. so that was white house press secretary josh earnest. the white house goes on to say that the latest

show murder rates dropping in several cities including houston, charlotte and new york. well, a major drug bust went down in maryland on friday. police found a marijuana grow operation in the basement of this city home. the largest one ever discovered in howard county. look for yourselves. hundreds of plants. a shotgun and $75,000 in cash also found inside that house. the two renting the home face charges. police say the home was originally sold at auction, and the new owner called police after noticing a suspicious van in the driveway. investigators say that they could actually smell that marijuana from the driveway. the trial for the second baltimore officer accused of freddie gray's death will continue on monday morning. edward nero accused of assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office. ne near -- nero was one of the

it's 9:30, and here are the top stories we're following right now -- thousands gathered last night at the national mall to remember law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. it is all part of national police week. the names of three officers from our region were added to the national memorial. we now know tonight will be one of the last nights you'll be able to ride metro after midnight. the transit agency stopping service at midnight every night as part of a safe track program, which starts next month. >> today the kept -- department of health is helping d.c. residents fight the bite. they are hosting mosquito prevention a community event focusing on the zika virus. it's happening

he is due back in court in august. time, 9:32. one state is taking a stand against president obama and his directive about student bathrooms. the president said states that don't let students use those bathrooms they feel comfortable in could lose billions in federal funding. texas' lieutenant governor is willing to lose the money to keep the state's rules in place. many say the new laws are discriminatory against transgender students and ending them could make a difference. >> things like this make them feel worthwhile and decreases the amount of suicides that could potentially happen and self-harm. >> texas reeves about $10 billion in education funding from the federal government. more controversy for presumptive gop nominee donald trump. on friday he denied posing as his own spokesman in a 1991 telephone interview. a "washington post" report details how trump posed as john miller, or john

now, the students are all expected to be okay. they go to franz scott key middle school in silver spring. mont gummy county police believe the children ate a mixture of sprite, nyquil and jolly ranchers yesterday morning. they all had stomach problems and trouble breathing. >> this morning the parents of one of missing fairfax teenager making a plea for their son to return home. rudy and daniel last seen at their homes tuesday night. police believe they left on their own and may have taken a taxi to the jessop, maryland, area. rudy's parents say there weren't any signs he was planning to leave. >> he was afraid to take my dog out for a walk in the dark. so i can't imagine how he is right now. i cannot imagine how he is on the streets. >> well, police say lima is in need of medication and did not take it with her.

10:00. another few minutes, then near 70 by early afternoon. getting into low 70s around 2:00 or 3:00 and storms come through. track them where you are with the nbc washington app and storm team 4 radar. >> thank you. bill cosby's lawyers asking the state supreme court for another chance. they want his criminal assault case thrown out arguing the current district attorney cannot go back on the word of a predecessor who said he promised cosby would not be charged in the case. the case says cosby relied on that pledge when he testified in a related lawsuit. several women have come forth and accused the comedian of drugging and molesting them. and a major drug company saying it will not allow its drugs to the part of the practice. pfizer says it is blocking the use of its drug from lethal injection. specifically, propofol, which caused michael jackson's death.

product to enhance and save lives. and escaping serious injury and the turtle expected to be okay after this unusual accident brought the two together. she was driving on the interstate in orlando when that turtle came flying through her windshield. >> nothing major, but blood coming down because it grazed my head. so i think that also freaked me out a little bit, and just looked and realized there is, in fact, a turtle in my car. >> probably wondering how this could happen. turns out the car in front of her ran over that turtle. that sent the guy flying through her windshield. after the whole scary ordeal, an emt ended up taking the turtle back to the water, and miraculously, it swam away. >> can't believe that. it's alive. mcdonald's making changes. testing out using fresh beef in its burgers. however, too early to tell whether the fresh beef idea will

right now the trial is only happening at stores in the dallas area. mcdonald's currently uses frozen beef for its burgers. the first time anyone can remember, officials closed off part of the appalachian trail in southwest virginia because of bears. yeah. several sightings around the meadow shelter and campsite. one person reported seeing bear cubs climbing trees to get food bags that were hanging on limbs. park officials chose to close the shelters until they can find a solution. well, a special effort to stamp out hunger. the national association of letter carriers is holding a food drive today. postal workers will collect food to distribute to different food banks in the area. the foot drive isn't only happening in d.c. but in 1,500 postal branches in all 50 states. >> last year we did 71 million pounds and we're trying to do a lot better this year. >> you can even leave

food at your mailbox. and may have to pay a little more for a hotel room in arlington. today the board of supervisors set to vote whether to add a tax surcharge of a quarter percent. that would bring in more than $1 million for the county. the money, we're told, would be used to promote tourism. the arlington county chamber of commerce supports the move. get your resume ready. the spring job fair in loudon county is today. it is happening in sterling at claremore center and runs until 2:00. more than 60 different companies will be there. >> the job fair is geared to everybody of all walks of life, all age groups, high school kids getting out for summer vacation to college kids returning home, college graduates. adults who are looking for a new career. adults who are either unemployed or under employed. seniors looking for work. >> some of the things to keep in mind, bring plty
