first at 4 today, arlington police looking for a man who sexually assaulted a woman in her own bed. >> it happened sunday morning on north edgewood street. this is live in the lion park neighborhood. >> reporter: as you can imagine, chris, neighbors here are really upset because not only did this happen in their community, but it happened inside someone's bedroom. we're on edgewood street here just off washington boulevard in this neighborhood in arlington county. now police say it was sunday morning about 2:30. the 25-year-old victim told police she got home and she saw a suspicious man in her backyard. but then she saw that man get into a tan sedan and take off, so she went to bed. about two hours later, she woke up to find a strange man in her bedroom who sexually assaulted her and then took off. she called police. police canvassed this neighborhood with dogs, but did f

police say this is a warning to people in this neighborhood that they need to be vigilant not just when they're on the streets, but when they're in their home. >> make sure your doors are locked. do make sure your windows are down. leave the light on outside. watch out for your neighbors. we'd rather come out and investigate something than for you to have something that seemed suspicious, but you weren't sure whether or not you should report to it. >> reporter: the only description police are working with right now is this is a man who had a black coat on with a hood up. he may be driving a four-door tan sedan. they're asking anyone in the arlington area who early sunday morning or late saturday night may have seen something suspicious to give them a call. news4. now to a developing story in the district where police are on the scene of a deadly shooting. a young man was shot and

earlier this afternoon along texas avenue southeast just off east capital street. the shooting put nearby plumber elementary school into lockdown as police looked for the shooter. this is now the 19th homicide in d.c.'s ward seven. more than triple the number of homicides at the same time last year. well, turning to the weather. you sure needed a jacket as you left the house this morning. by tomorrow, you may be trading it in. >> thooat was a shocker walking outside today. >> it really was, guys. i made my son wear pants. he was not excited. he wanted to keep his shorts on. take a look at the numbers. temperatures 45 in the city. 36 in gaithersburg. 37 in dulles. that's actually tied a record. 36 manassas. a very cold day with sunshine though. we've seen a very nice af

treatment plan. firefighters say they found a man dead when they arrived. officers haven't said if the person was working on that tower. we'll keep an eye on this and update you on our nbc washington app. prosecutors rested their case against baltimore police officer edward nero. his defense team asked the judge to dismiss all the charges against him, arguing that prosecutors didn't prove their case. bell, judge barry williams said no. chris gordon gets us up to date. >> reporter: after three days of this trial, there are still questions about who is criminally responsible for not seat belting freddie gray into a police van and exactly how freddie gray broke his neck inside the van.

tomorrow. federal security officer tordil is accused of shooting her this month. there's going to be a fundraiser in honor of tordil's estranged wife gladys. police say her husband shot and killed her outside high point high school where gladys was a beloved chemistry teacher. a guilty plea today from the man who drove a dump truck into two police cruisers nearly missing two officers who were standing nearby. the incident happened in january of last year in the parking lot of woodmoore town center. today gene brandon pled guilty to two counts of attempted first-degree murder. brandon had accused the officers of killing his brother. don't

walked into a metro station looking for help after apparently someone shot him. shomari stone just got on the scene. what are you hearing? >> reporter: i'm here at the scene. you look right here. it is active. police are blocking the scene to make sure that people do not cross the yellow tape and contaminate the crime scene. there is a crime scene investigation team here. forensics. we're hearing there was a man who was on this block, on new hampshire avenue. all of a sudden shots rang out. he was shot in the back according to sources. he is conscious and breathing. a source with law enforcement tells me there was an suv speeding away. police are trying to see if that suv is somehow related to this shooting. a lot of folks use this new hampshire avenue northwest to go to the petworth metro station. folks use this to get all the

traffic is being rerouted because police have blocked off this block right here. the entire block is a crime scene as they look for shell casings and other evidence related to this shooting. you can walk down georgia avenue, but you cannot use new hampshire on this side of the street. as for the victim, again he is conscious and breathing. police are talking to him. they plan on gathering details to figure out exactly what happened out here in northwest d.c. it is one of the most read stories on nbcwashington.com. police in suburban chicago say sinead o'connor has been found safe. somebody called police yesterday after o'connor went for a bike ride and didn't come back. police haven't released any details about where she was found or what condition she was in. her rendition of prince's ballad

international hit back in the 90s. comedian arsenio hall filed a defamation lawsuit against o'connor for suggesting that hall supplied prince with drugs. she's only 7 years old, but this little girl has a lot of love to give. she spent a year compiling a book of bedtime stories for a baby she never met. the stories are for olivia, the baby daughter of a police officer in omaha, nebraska. she was killed on duty the day before she was scheduled to go on maternity leave. doctors were able to save the baby. she was so moved by this story she asked everyone from school police officers and school principals to create an audio book for olivia. >> i thought

first on 4, a local math teacher is in jail accused of raping one student and assaulting another in northern virginia community college. we learned about this case by digging through a search warrant in the professor's home in fairfax county. >> reporter: the teacher is identified as 27-year-old youssef talab t. the first student came forward in early march to say

assaulted her twice. a second student whom police say didn't know the other woman says talab sexually assaulted her earlier in the semester. a developing story now. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a plane to crash on its way to virginia. the small plane carrying four people left tupelo, mississippi, for charlottesville. it went down right after takeoff this morning. no one survived. the plane is registered to a texas man. the debris is pretty widely scattered. the weather was overcast and windy when the plane took off. the weather they've been having out on the plains, it certainly makes us appreciate the kind of day we've had today. boy, oh, boy, it's beautiful. >> despite the temperature, doug. >> despite the temperature. so cold that we set

we have. it doesn't get that cold very much in the month of may. out there right now, it is very nice though. we have rebounded nicely. plenty of sunshine across the area. 66 degrees. no wind to talk about. yesterday winds were gusting 20, 30, 40 miles per hour. it was a very windy and cold day all day on our sunday. much better on monday with all of this nice mild air. we'll call it mild because it is not warm for this time of year. average high is 75 degrees. we're in the 60s. something else that continues is the allergies. trees are on the high side. grass is now at the moderate level. a lot of allergy sufferers having a tough time of things lately. no rain to talk about in our immediate area, but you don't have to go too far back to the west to see where that rain is. clear skies for most of the mid atlantic. we're going to get the clouds again tomorrow. lots of clouds, lots of moisture, back to the west. storm system in colorado that's going to continue to

all this moisture from the gulf. we'll get this first and then that storm during the day on wednesday. we have a two-day period where we're going to be getting more rain. clouds on the increase. watch what happens tomorrow morning. 8:00 a.m., here comes the rain. we are expecting a very wet morning rush for many areas. notice at 8:00 not a whole lot inside the city just yet, but after about 9:00, 10:00, it starts to move in just about everywhere. some of heaviest rain around noon right along i-95. we do get a little break tomorrow afternoon. by break, that just means in the rainfall, not the cloud cover. still a couple of showers tomorrow evening. then more tomorrow night into wednesday morning. as i mentiond, we are going to see a fairly rainy period here. out at the bus stop, take the umbrellas and a coat. 52 degrees. coming home off the bus, 58 degrees. not nearly as wet in the afternoon. 7:00 a.m., 10:00

weather for that. sunny and dry. temperatures hovering in the mid 60s for the next hour or two and a very light wind. we are going to see some rain moving in by tomorrow morning and through much of the day tomorrow. you can see just a few high clouds drifting over reston. now there's the dulles tollway. welcome sunshine for today. then the clouds close in. we have new hour-by-hour timing. that's coming up this half hour. well, the supreme court is punting a controversial case that involves the president's health care plan. >> the justices opted out of deciding whether nuns could be forced to pay for contraception. steve handelsman is live at the court to explain what this means. steve? >> reporter: thanks. good evening. punting is right. this is a good example of what can happen when this u.s. supreme court is down one justice. both sides are claiming a win, but there was no substantial

it's a unanimous decision by the four liberal and four conservative justices not to decide. the court expresses no view on obamacare and birth control said the opinion. >> this is a political compromise by a supreme court that is just tied 4-4 and has no way of deciding the case. birth control must still be offered for free to employees, even of religious employers, like the little sisters of the poor who run nursing homes. a win for president obama, says the white house. >> it will allow millions of women across the country to continue to get the health care coverage that they need. >> reporter: supported by pope francis on his visit to d.c., the little sisters begged the supreme court to exempt them, even from fines for refusing to fill out the government form to have outside insurance provide contraception. and they claimed today that they've won. >> the court today told them you

can't make them sign it and you can't fine them for it. >> reporter: so the case goes back to lower courts to decide. not so much the little sisters case. they do not have to fill out the waiver form that objected to, but it's not clear how millions of women who work for other religious organizations will get the birth control that they are still entitled to. so it is possible this case could come back here to be decided by the ninth justice, whoever that turns out to be, a liberal or a conservative, depending on who wins the white house in november. i'm steve handelsman. news4. a hug at the white house today for a grandmother accepting a bittersweet honor. her grandson was awarded a posthumous medal of valor today. president obama recognized 12 other law enforcement officers who risked their

others. there was one officer whose death rocked our community. >> we also honor the more than 35 who have given their lives in the line of duty this year. one of them, an officer in virginia named ashley marie guindon was taken from us on her very first shift. >> she was killed in february. the president said she just signed a package of bills to help provide police departments with more protective gear. we have some more breaking news at the live desk. we've just learned that a woman has been shot just one block from where a young man was killed in southeast d.c. this most recent shooting happened on 49th street. the woman is not conscious and not breathing. around noon today, a man was shot and killed just one block away on texas avenue. that forced the nearby

elementary to lock down. pat collins has been on that scene today. shomari stone and he are moving to the new shooting on 49th street. a former virginia transportation official has admitted to taking part in a bribery scheme. scott macfarlane broke the story late this afternoon. mark mcgregor is the former ceo of virginia regional transit. today in federal court mcgregor pleaded guilty to accepting nearly $200,000 in kickbacks while he ran that organization. prosecutors say mcgregor approved a contractor's bogus work orders. then took half the payment in kickbacks. the contractor in question has already pleaded guilty. this new video shows the moment the wall of a building began to crumble in northeast washington.

suv, but the driver managed to swerve to get out of the way yesterday. the old tomato packing plant is going through some renovation. fire investigators believe yesterday's strong winds played a role in the collapse of the wall. the street is still closed. and for the third day in a row, the washington monument is closed. once again, it is because of an issue with the elevator. as news4 meagan fitzgerald reports, crews are busy making repairs and the tourist attraction is ready to reopen tomorrow. >> reporter: it was an electrical power issue that was discovered with the elevator, forcing it to shut down for the last three days now. we're told that when crews arrived here on saturday morning and they were getting ready to open they discovered this issue, so they had to call in the crews. they had to order a part, which is why they say this has taken so long, but we're told it should reopen on time tomorrow morning. coming up at 5:00, we'll tell

trump is hoping voters in oregon will put him a step closer to the nomination, while hillary clinton and bernie sanders are battling for that state and kentucky. trump has all but locked up the gop's top spot, but now he's facing some new obstacles. brian moore has more on that. >> reporter: donald trump may not have any opponents left in the gop primaries, but he's still facing plenty of opposition, especially from republicans. with growing talk of a third-party mutiny. >> there are a lot of folks on the third party side of this that are looking at this and saying, if this guy is our nominee, are we looking at an electoral wipeout? and the answer is yes. >> i don't think i'm a divisive person. i'm a unifier. >> reporter: president obama called trump out over

"the new york times" teed off the latest controversy in an extensive report questioning trump's treatment of women. a former model at the center of the story says it is a negative spin job. >> i never saw him speak illy of any woman or man for that matter. >> reporter: hillary clinton tries to finish her fight with bernie sanders. >> republicans have been attacking me for 25 years and they're not going to stop now. >> reporter: likely true, but many in the gop aren't cutting trump much slack either. brian moore nbc news washington. security checkpoints became choke points and left hundreds of people stranded. some passengers were caught up in the long lines for more than two hours and missed their flights. airport workers had to set up cots in the terminal. the problem certainly didn't go away this morning.

the transportation security administration admits it is understaffed, but it promises to have more screeners hired and working by next month. if you want to see more, open the nbc washington app and search o'hare. today, investigators began a second round of questioning into what caused the cargo ship el faro to sink. a pilot who spoke with the ship's captain says the captain was aware of a storm brewing at sea, but he planned to go under it. the pilot said he remembered no irregularities with the cargo ship. all 33 people on board are believed dead after the ship encountered hurricane joaquin last year. the day a teenager gets his or her driver's license is an exciting day for the teen and a nervous one if you're a parent and for good reason. there is new information out today about the risks many teen drivers take.

>> reporter: images of teenagers acting reckless while in cars are unnerving as are the latest statistics on fatal crashes involving teens. >> our sons and daughters are dying in car crashes at an alarming rate. >> reporter: safe kids worldwide reports six teenagers are killed each day in a motor vehicle crash, and almost half of those accidents the victims are not wearing seat belts. a new safe kids survey of nearly 800 teens and their parents finds teenagers would be more likely to buckle up if mom or dad made it a family rule. teens are ten times less likely to speed, text while driving, drink and drive, or skip a seat belt. >> you need to have a formal agreement. you have to enforce it and you have to model good behavior. >> reporter: most surveyed teens

tonight. let's take a look at the capital capitol. it's a beautiful afternoon there. capitol dome is shining with our very beautiful sunshine that's coming down around the region. all around the area, as we take a look at the live view, we've got a few high clouds beginning to drift over us right now. those high clouds are now just beginning to move in from the north and west. and we'll have those with us here through the evening hours. they'll be thickening up and lowering a bit as well. temperatures right now are in the mid to upper 60s. leesburg up to 68. mid 60s right around the immediate metro area. so it is a delightful afternoon after that cold morning. quite a change coming in. a great afternoon and evening to get in a run, get a little bit of exercise. we'll be in the upper 60s now through 6:00 p.m. then by 7:00, the low 60s. starting out with those clouds coming in.

i took this picture a few days ago of this field of butter cups that have exploded with color over the last couple of weeks with all the rain we've had. we're seeing a lot of this. i took this in northern montgomery county. right now storm team 4 radar not showing any rain anywhere in the vicinity. we're all dry now, but we do have a big area of rain coming into the midwest crossing the mississippi river valley right now. it is on track to come our way by tomorrow morning. the area in green is the zone of potential rain. by 7:00 to 8:00 in the morning, it moves into virginia, west virginia, and crosses the potomac into the metro area. that's by 8:00 tomorrow morning. the rest of the afternoon, the rain continues. the area in yellow is where it may come down a little harder. that's around noontime. much of the rain starts to break

up, moves across the bay by 4:00 p.m. then we'll get a break from the rain into the evening hours. maybe just a few sprinkles early evening. then as we get into the latter part of the evening on tuesday into wednesday is when we'll likely get some more rain coming through off and on. maybe a little sun breaking out wednesday afternoon with a high right around 60 degrees. so only in the 50s tomorrow. some welcome sunshine. it's been good seeing the sun today. we probably feel like the sun is a rare sight for us so far this month. the sunshine today has nothing on this video. take a look at what american astronaut jeff williams tweeted out from the international space station. it's pretty cool video, time lapsed video, shot of last friday's sunrise. he gets to see this 16 times a day

i'm tom sherwood in the district. there are a lot of wall murals that people like, but then there's also a lot of bad stuff, graffiti, tagging, that people don't like. the district today announced a new six-week plan to clean away graffiti in all of the city's eight wards saying unchecked graffiti just invites more graffiti. >> graffiti at its very basic level is a property crime. we know it also impacts our quality of life. >> reporter: it is not just graffiti. hundreds of stickers are being scraped away too. the district spends about a half million dollars each year clearing away graffiti and says it hopes the six-week program called the great

the man who sued whole foods were allegedly writing a gay slur on a cake he bought is dropping his lawsuit and apologizing. whole foods says the m

claims were not true. it showed the upc code on the cake was in a different location than this man's video. the company also said the baker who worked on the cake is part of the lgbt community. whole foods says it is going to drop its countersuit because the man admitted his story was a, quote, a complete fabrication. a developing story now. the cruise ship carnival liberty is back in port in galveston, texas. one passenger is missing though. the coast guard suspended its search for her today. the ship's surveillance video shows the woman sitting on a deck railing early friday mo morni morning, then falling overboard. >> unfortunately, we were unable to find the individual we're looking for. around the clock search efforts from multiple crews flying this aircraft. >> the ship was on a four-day cruise to mexico. it is a surgical milestone in our country, one that

northwest. two are murder cases. i want to draw your attention to that house down there on the corner here on 49th street in southeast. it's in the 100 block. witnesses tell me that a woman who lives in that house, a woman in her 40s, was coming home from the grocery store. they say she got out of the car and as she walked towards the house, they heard six shots and she fell to the ground outside the house. homicide detectives are now working this scene. a few hours ago around 12:30 over on texas avenue near the intersection of benning road and east capitol street, another murder. a 21-year-old man shot and killed after an altercation there behind a gas station. police were all over the place. they brought in search dogs. they brought in evidence technicians. they're trying to get clues and
