since egypt air flight vanished off radar screens. who was on board and what may have brought it down. what the community is doing to try to save joe's record paradise. good evening. >> tonight the second largest community college in the country finds itself a victim of a massive federal loan scam. >> two people are accused of stealing people's identities so they could cash in. we begin with jackie bensen live at northern virginia community college. >> reporter: one of the people whose identity was stolen is a u.s. service member, who was hospitalized after being wounded in afghanistan. the grand jury indictment handed down this afternoon in the eastern district of virginia accuses

aunt of stealing $34,548 from northern virginia community college last year. prosecutors say taylor and nixon stole the identities of four people, registered them as students at the school. according to the indictment, the pair used their own addresses for those students. that's where the college sent loan money in excess of required school expenses. a spokesman for the school said the discrepancy was discovered by a sharp-eye employee who contacted police. most of the students we spoke to called it an outrage. >> that's crazy. i use fafsa to pay for these courses. to hear somebody is ripping the money off and using it when they shouldn't, that doesn't sit well with me. >> that's awful, truly awful. it's unfortunate there are many people who need financial help d

l.a.x. police are stopping and searching passengers as they drive in and have increased the screening of people who work at the airport. the white house can't say definitively what happened to the plane, but as nbc keir simmons reports the families are starting to get some information. >> relatives of those on board have been gathered here at charles de gaulle airport. we have been watching as french government officials and ministers have arrived to give them information before the information is released. what we now know is american intelligence officials believe or suspect there was an explosion in the area where this plane disappeared. we know from the egyptians they think it is more likely this was terrorism related. if that is the case, it will put the spotlight back on this airport with the question of how an explosion happened. was it caused by a bomb? how could

the airline. the search for the aircraft continues. reports from the wreckage have been found are now discounted by greek officials. it is crucial it is found and particularly, of course, the black boxes from that plane in those will be answers to all of these questions. back to you. >> keir simmons, thank you. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a small plane to crash dangerously close to busy route 50 in mitchellville. police say a student pilot was flying the single engine four-seat cessna this afternoon with a trainee in the pilot seat. nobody was hurt. it's been a montgomery county staple more than 40 years. right now no one is rocking out at an iconic record shop. it's been closed since moving in march and now fans are raising money to get it back

they are looking for a person who robbed someone who was responding to a craigslist ad. it happened last friday on 21st street in southeast. officers say a person was meeting somebody about an ad for a phone on craigslist. during the meetup, the seller pulled a knife and robbed the buyer of his money. last month, police designated three police stations as safe exchange zones to avoid situations like this one. >> you have to realize you are dealing with complete stranger and putting yourself at risk. do it during daylight hours in a public place where others around. >> reporter: the exchange zones are at the locations on the screen. anti-semitic flyers are making rounds in takoma park tonight. police tell us the flyers make derogatory statements about jewish people, going as far as claiming jewish people altered the rotation of the earth on its axis. officers say it is not the

high utility bills, we've all been there but a maryland man's water bill trumps anything you have ever seen before. >> yes, we're talking about a bill for nearly $200,000. he knew it was a mistake, but trying to convince the utility company was a challenge. that's when he called consumer reporter susan hogan for help. >> reporter: let me set this up for you. two people living in a 1500 square foot home get their water bill. it says they consumed 1.5 million gallons of water in one month. we know it sounds ridiculous, but the water company said they had to pay it or it would shut off their water. >> 180 thousand plus dollars. >> you have to see it to believe it. his water bill for

prince georges county staff in an award ceremony in greenbelt tonight. the winners included a fort washington teacher killed in february. she won rookie teacher of the year. there's 13-year-old amari. he survived a shooting that killed his mother in august. he won comeback kid of the year. davis' family and amari talked about the special recognition. >> i know it would make my mother proud and my friends and make me keep pushing. >> it shows she has been touching lives the same way as before. >> well done. aaron gilchrist was the emcee and he should be asleep getting ready for news 4 today. how about that amari. what a nice young gentleman he is. >> glad to see them get recognition. >> tell us how fabulous it will be tomorrow.
