move in fast. take a look at how quickly it moved in our area just over the past hour. >> it's all happening as a lot of folks try to make their way home in the rush hour. let's go to the storm center to doug kammerer. >> yesterday it was just light shower activity most of the day. today, some heavy downpours. let's show you the radar. not everyone is seeing it, but the areas right along i-95 are getting in on the action right now. nothing around frederick or leesburg, but right around d.c. seeing some showers. right down i-95 and 29 into montgomery county. this is towards bethesda. this storm is the strongest one. we have an outflow boundary from this storm that's moving back to the west. fairfax, oakton,

starting to see some of that rain. if you're in woodbridge right now, you're noticing the wind picking up. hail has been reported with this one. watch out. a little bit of lightning associated with that too. more stormneiness out there. it is not moving anywhere fast. as we move on through the next couple of hours, we'll continue to see more of those storms developing, moving through very quickly, and then we forming. watch out. we'll continue to keep you posted. you saw this breaking news alert from our nbc washington app today. baltimore officer edward nero is cleared in the death of freddie gray. >> the judge found him not guilty on all four charges. we heard protesters shouting as that verdict was read. chris gordon is live in baltimore getting reaction to what happened. >> reporter: officer edward nero is the first of six baltimore police officers charged in the death of freddie gray

put on trial and found not guilty. today in court, judge barry williams read the reasoning behind his verdict. it took nearly half an hour. officer nero was found not guilty on charges of assault and misconduct because the judge said a fellow officer, garrett miller, who was compelled to testify for prosecutors said that he stopped freddie gray and cuffed him. the judge found nero not guilty of reckless endangerment and conduct charges even though he failed to seat belt freddie gray into the wagon. he acted as any officer would, assuming that a superior would belt gray. gray suffered a broken neck in the van and died a week later. the president of the naacp who monitored this trial says she is disappointd

verdict. >> the emotions keep coming with everybody until this whole thing is over and someone gets convicted or has some kind of charge with doing something reckless and endangering and also at the result of freddie dying. freddie would not be dead today if six officers didn't do something wrong. >> reporter: ahead, we'll hear how freddie gray's family is reacting to this not guilty verdict. montgomery county sent about 60 officers to baltimore. the special events response team is helping baltimore police handle any fallout from the verdict. >> a woman was visibly upset outside the courthouse when not guilty was not announced. >> it is not right. it is not justifiable. you have crooked cops. you have good cops. i'm not blaming good cops, but at the same time right is right

out primary process. that's according to a brand-new poll. 40% think the vigorous and now lengthy campaigns by hillary clinton and bernie sanders have benefitted the party. 22% think it's been bad for democrats. 36% don't think it's made a difference either way. that's a reversal from the extended 2008 contest between clinton and president obama when just 21% of democrats thought it was good for the party. he was told he was going to die. he thought was wife was dead too. we heard some emotional testimony say from the victim of a home invasion in mclean, but the man on trial for that attack is blaming involuntary intoxication. new details from the fairfax county courthouse. >> reporter: well, the morning started off with leo fisher taking the witness stand. fisher detailed the moments during that night of november 9th, 2014. that's when he says andrew

schmuhl forced his way into his mclean home terrorizing he and his wife. he was a partner at a law firm, the same place fisher's wife worked until she was fired. schmuhl never identified himself, but start eed asking questions about his wife alicia being terminated from the law firm. then fisher described the moments schmuhl started stabbing him and cutting him in the throat before shooting his wife. coming up at 5:00, fisher explains in detail an encounter he had with schmuhl long before the attack happened and why he fired schmuhl's wife. a man died after a crash on route 50, but it wasn't the collision that killed him. state police say

doug and i are tracking some thunderstorms. some are producing hail, some gusts of wind 30 to 40 miles per hour. they're from baltimore all the way down to washington. we have another cluster of thunderstorms coming on through. the strongest one right now with all this lightning is associated right along 95. it is right near woodbridge. that's going to be tracking. 4:23 into quantico. stafford 4:40. fredericksburg 4:58. some hail on the way with some downpours. by now, you've noticed it and so has your wallet. gas prices are going up again only a week before your hit the road for memorial day. prices jumped 55 cents in the past three months, but that's still lower than last year. a gallon of regular averages 2.45 in the district. in maryland it will only cost you

that's a different pattern than we normally see. a couple of strong storms. strongest of which right now -- look at this line from woodbridge in quantico over towards manassas and centerville and chantilly. this is the same storm that brought hail around the silver spring area and then down towards alexandria and springfield and fairfax county. look at all of the lightning with this. this is between woodbridge and quantico right now. get ready for a very heavy storm. a lot of lightning with this too. track this line to the north and you notice around manassas there has been some wind with these. not a lot, but some wind and hail. let's zoom on in right around 66 here as we look over towards the willow springs area. this is centerville and chantilly with little river turnpike. a lot of lightning around

manassas. more of this in through montgomery county. these are coming down i-95 towards columbia and the aspen hill area. very heavy rain around the wilson hills area, around whe wheaton, and rockville. this is going to continue. it is all thanks to that area of low pressure, the same one that gave us the days of rain, saturday, sunday, and today. that's why we've got these storms moving on in. if you're around frederick or leesburg, you haven't seen the rain just yet. you will over the next couple of hours. around 7:00, notice more showers and more thunderstorms moving in. around 9:00. this could effect the nationals game tonight as we take on the mets at home. i expect to see a delay. they may get the game in, but i expect to see at least a delay in here. by tomorrow morning, this system is out of here and we see a

the second district in northwest. two of the most disturbing cases have involved high school students attacked near their schools. >> reporter: i'm mark segraves in northwest washington where for the second time a student was attacked right outside of his school. this time it happened outside the private school georgetown day. the student was walking on the sidewalk at 1:00 in the afternoon when three teenagers attacked him when he got to this point, threw him to the ground, then repeatedly beat him and kicked him. they stole his personal belongings, including his cell phone and took off. a student at nearby wilson high school was stabbed as he was headed to school. police say they don't believe these incidents are related, but they ask the public for help. graduation day is a once in a

weather, but may be interrupted by some afternoon showers. a chance of some showers and storms on sunday and maybe memorial day itself. right now, monday is looking cooler. memorial day highs reaching the mid 70s with maybe an afternoon thundershower. that's the way it looks. a developing story now in virginia. the state is working on a plan to make sure you know everything you need to know about the zika virus. the state is about to launch an aggressive public relations campaign, and pregnant women will be getting zika prevention tips. communities without mosquito control programs will get help, and the state lab is about to test mosquitos for the virus. in the meantime, if you live in virginia, you should check around your house for pooled water to try to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. so what's the best way to protect yourself from mosquito bites? >> some insect repellants work better than others. susan hogan has b

brands are most effective. >> there are so many out there, aren't there? you just sit there and you look at the counters. which one do i choose? as it begins to warm up, those pesky mosquitos will become more common here, so consumer reports tested all different insect repellant brands and rated them. here are the results. mosquitos are a top concern. there's currently no vaccine for the zika virus and no drug to treat zika infections, so the centers for disease control and prevention says it is essential that people avoid mosquito bites. consumer reports tests insect repellants for their effectiveness against the aedes mosquito. >> products with the right percentage of deet were most successful.

woods deep. even women who are pregnant or breast-feeding can safely use these insect repellants are applied properly. don't apply mosquito repellants over cuts, wounds, or irritated skin or under clothes. when applying to face, apply it to your hands first and then rub on your face. it should never be used on infants under two months old. while no cases of zika have been traced to mosquito bites received in the united states, experts expect some spread of the disease as weather warms up, particularly in florida, texas, and other states where mosquitos are most prevalent.

i-95. there is a lot of the activity around i-95 at philadelphia. they are moving down i-95. this was the biggest storm earlier today. brought some hail around silver spring. now down around the fredericksburg area. here is some of the heaviest rain right on through the bethesda area and the district and right along 495. it's been a mess in tysons corner. look at reston. seeing some very heavy rain. that is an area getting hit very hard right through downtown, right along the dulles toll road. you can see the lightning right there. farther down to the south, bigger storm right to the east of manassas. that one continues to move towards the warrenton area. heads up in that location. looking at a very stormy night for many of us. hello to summer heat tomorrow. i have the full forecast coming u
