i-95. there is a lot of the activity around i-95 at philadelphia. they are moving down i-95. this was the biggest storm earlier today. brought some hail around silver spring. now down around the fredericksburg area. here is some of the heaviest rain right on through the bethesda area and the district and right along 495. it's been a mess in tysons corner. look at reston. seeing some very heavy rain. that is an area getting hit very hard right through downtown, right along the dulles toll road. you can see the lightning right there. farther down to the south, bigger storm right to the east of manassas. that one continues to move towards the warrenton area. heads up in that location. looking at a very stormy night for many of us. hello to summer heat tomorrow. i have the full forecast coming u

officers on trial in the death of freddie gray. the verdict delivered today from a judge allowed a baltimore officer to go home a free man. >> after the case ignited anger across the country earlier, today it remained calm. it is an another blow to the prosecutor in her attempt to hold police accountable for the death of a black man. chris gordon is live in baltimore with more on this verdict. >> reporter: well, wendy, the judge not only delivered his verdict, but explained the details, how he reached his decisions. i spoke to the lawyer who represents the family of freddie gray. the first thing he said was that he is satisfied with the judge's verdicts. then he continued by adding -- >> second thing i want to commend judge williams for is not bending to the tremendous pres

to find these officers guilty. that pressure is inappropriate because guilt or innocence should be determined based sl d solesole ly on the evidence presented. >> reporter: judge barry williams read the reasons for each of his verdicts. he found officer nero not guilty of assault and misconduct because fellow officer garrett miller testified he stopped and cuffed freddie gray, not nero. even though nero failed to seat belt gray in the police transport wagon. it was reasonable for him to assume a superior or the police wagon driver would handle seat belting. gray suffered a broken neck in the van and died a week later. >> policing has been down.

death led to rioting in parts of baltimore. tonight after officer nero has been found not guilty, the community's reaction is being watches closely. >> i agree with the not guilty. he just helped put him in the van. that's it. >> it's unbelievable to me. i'm amazed at -- what we saw on tv, he got not guilty for. i don't feel like justice was done. >> reporter: ahead on news4 at 6:00, how the judge's ruling in this case could impact the five upcoming trials of baltimore police officers still facing charges in the death of freddie gray. montgomery county police are in baltimore right now in the wake of today's verdict in officer nero's trial. about 60 members of the department will be helping officers up in baltimore. the montgomery group is part of a special events response team. today with nbc was

continuing coverage on the officers charged in the freddie gray case. we have a full list of the officers and what they're charged with in the nbc washington app. we're hearing from the owner of a jewelry store in the midst of a robbery and a shootout with police. the gunman got away. pat collins live in springfield, virginia, with the story from the jewelry store owner. >> reporter: wendy, it's an incredible story. it's an armed robbery that left to a shootout with a cop, bystander wounded, two getaways and a carjacking. first things first, let's talk about the robbery of that jewelry store. >> and he shouted, don't move, i'll shoot you. don't move, i'll shoot you. >> reporter: that's mohamma

in springfield, virginia. saturday afternoon he was robbed at gunpoint by a not so subtle suspect. as one customer left the store, the robber came running in. he had a ski mask on his face, a gun in his hand. he ran across the floor, jumps over the counter, and held a gun to mohammad's head. that began eight minutes of terror. >> all that time his one hand was on me and the other was taking out the jewelry stuff. i kept shouting don't shoot me. don't shoot me. please don't take. he said just stay quiet. >> reporter: he was systematic and efficient. he went from showcase to showcase to showcase pulling jewelry out of the boxes and then stuffing it into a duffle bag. he even busted this one up. he left very, very little behind. now there are a number of security

and they recorded the robbery. mohammad says the gunman was dressed in what appeared to be a brown ups outfit that seemed to be like a costume over other clothes. >> he was wearing a ups dress. it was kind of fluffy. like i realize now or later he might be wearing on top of something else. >> reporter: now after the robbery, the gunman gets into a shootout with a cop here in the parking lot and then not once, but two getaways that end in crashes. more about all that coming up at 6:00. wendy, back to you. a former public information officer with the fairfax county police pleads guilty to child pornography charges. bud walker admitted to all ten counts against him. he

of children under a phony name. lots of scrutiny tonight for the security at and around the white house. all this comes as we're still waiting to learn about charges against the man who was shot outside the white house gate on friday. scott macfarlane here in the studio with more on what we're learning about him and white house security. >> jesse oliveira is hospitaled tonight in critical condition at george washington university hospital. we don't know when we can expect charges against him for that reason. oliveira was shot as he walked up to the e street checkpoint on the west side of the white house on friday doing so while carrying a gun. fbi agents believe he wanted law enforcement officers to kill him. meanwhile, plans to make permanent upgrades to white house security and the white house fence has slowed down. last month, the news4

raise the fence from 6 feet to 11 feet tall to prevent fence jumpings. internal national park service and u.s. secret service e-mails we obtained showed they conducted fence testing april 20th. they did so in quantico. they invited some of the agencies who must approve the fence to attend. it is behind its timetable to build the fence. as of tonight, the secret service can't give an estimate. it must get approval from two smaller federal agencies, the national capital planning commission and the commission for fine arts, before doing so. to the race for the white house now. ai

that came out just minutes ago. it is giving some insight into what voters think about donald trump and his lack of experience when it comes to government and military. chris lawrence is in our newsroom now breaking it all down for us. >> the new nbc news/wall street journal poll suggest that voters do care that he's never served in public office or the military. 61% of voters in the poll have reservations about his lack of experience and more than 40% are very uncomfortable with it. on the flip side, 15% say they are okay with trump's experience. on the other side, another poll finds that senator bernie sanders continuing campaign is damaging democratic frontrunner hillary clinton. clinton was in detroit today trying to solidify her support

today she described her plans to raise the minimum wage and deal with immigration reform. clinton also directed her attacks at donald trump, not bernie sanders. the senator took his campaign to east los angeles to focus on the economy. he says there's a need to invest in young people, give them jobs and education. perhaps most importantly sanders gave no indication he's even considering levaving this race. >> thank you, chris. democrats say the extended primary battle between sanders and clinton has been good for the party. stay with us for more on these races. lester holt will have more on "nightly news" at 7:00. crews say they have finished repairs on another arcing

all right. this is just coming into the live desk. we're learning police have made an arrest after an attempted rape and sexual assault on board a metro train. the metro transit police say this happened last month at a red line train near the glenmont station. police have arrested this man. his name is john hicks. a woman says hicks held her at knife point and tried to rape her. the woman says he forced her to perform some sort of sexual act on him. police quickly identified and arrested hicks and charged him with that attempted rape and other sex offenses. they say he may also be responsible for an unrelated sexual assault in montgomery county. short staffing and

lines, that's a problem that's caused passengers to miss their flights at airports all across the country. with the busy travel summer season across the country, there are fears it could get worse. but as we speak, the agency is testing some new technology that it hopes to not only get you to your plane faster, but also safer. >> our transportation reporter adam tuss gets rare access to the tsa testing facility. >> reporter: welcome to the transportation system's integrated facility. there's nothing ordinary about what's inside. the primary mission here, safety and security, but the focus is also on efficiency. >> our threat is constantly changing, so our equipment has to keep up with the threat as well as stay a little bit ahead of it.

equipment to the country. the president did take in a meal with dining celebrity chef anthony bourdain. the crowd cheered as the president left the restaurant in hanoi. he dined on grilled pork and rice noodle. bourdain tweeted the meal cost 6 bucks and that he picked up the tab. well, there is controversy over plans that would allow national parks here and throughout the nation to display the logos of big corporate donors. critics say the move would cheapen the park experience. tom sherwood reports that the parks service is saying any new program would be discreet and would help bring parks the badly needed funding. >> reporter: parklands, outdoor activities, streams of

water. the $3 billion a year national parks service oversees over 400 national park sites. budgets from congress are tight. the u.s. parks service is nearing a final plan to boost private and corporation donations with it says discreet visible credit to the money givers. >> this effort is to move us into the 21st century. >> reporter: some groups contend the initiative is a dangerous intrusion of private interest on public lands. >> this isn't about philanthropy. it is about marketing and merchandising. it changes who the parks are operated for. >> reporter: the parks service contends critics are wrong, that it is nothing like flashy naming

and a very rainy monday night forecast across the area. what else is new? this time something a little different than we've seen the last couple of days. some thunder, some lightning, and some small hail. we have seen lots of clouds and rain downtown. we are tracking these storms as they move on through. you can see a lot of red on the radar. the reds are the very heavy areas of rainfall that we continue to watch up towards

hagerstown, martinburg, and frederick. this will drop towards loudoun county and frederick county. the heaviest rain right now over fairfax county and warrenton and fauquier county. this is right around reston and the herndon area. some small hail as well as some gusty winds. it is steady rain now along the beltway. we need that during the evening rush. we've got it out there from fairfax down towards burke and clifton and prince william county around the woodbridge area. herndon, we're dealing with that rain along the dulles toll road here. as we look toward reston, seeing some very heavy rain. that extends down towards chantilly and centerville and right back towards

and unprovoked vicious attack caught on video. the victim a young student walking near his school. >> he is the second student in recent weeks to be attacked near his high school in d.c. >> there are calls tonight for more protection. both incidents happened in northwest washington in the second police district, an area that has seen a spike in crimes over the last year. the student attacked caught on video happened just last month near the intersection of davenport and 42nd streets. that's where mark segraves joins us live with the latest. mark? >> reporter: good evening, jim. this is georgetown day school's

t tenley town campus. this is where the student was beat en and robbed while classe were going on inside. it was about 1:30 in the afternoon. the student was leaving the school. one of the three suspects attacks, beating him to the ground, kicking him, and then going through his pockets. >> there was a robbery that occurred. right now it'sly investigated. we don't have any suspects. but there's been a video released. >> reporter: this attack happened two days after a student at nearby wilson high school was stabbed on his way to school. >> more recently, there's been robberies and attacks around the tinnily area near

parents saying the student was not seriously injured. jim, back to you. people in a prince george's county neighborhood will rest a bit easier when a killer is off the streets. there are no suspects in custody for murder early this morning in temple hills. he was shot to death on 23rd parkway just off iverson street. he was found slumped over on a white mercedes in the middle of the street. one woman says neighbors rushed out to try to save his life. >> people were trying to keep him awake, keep him alive, before the ambulance got here. i saw them doing cpr. my god, i hope he doesn't die. >> a $20,000 reward is being offered in this case. thousands of prevention kits will be sent to pregnant women

the state lab will start testing mosquitos for zika and virginia will lend a hand with mosquito control to local communities. you can stop the spread by getting rid of standing water in your yard. there is no cure and no vaccine for zika. you will now see a new message on trash bins around fairfax county. slow down in neighborhoods. volunteers kicked off the program today in the virginia run community with american disposal services. they put stickers on the bins to remind drivers to watch their speed. the sticker says keep kids alive, drive 25. >> we did a pre-survey out here to determine the level of speeders that we have and how many. unfortunately, it was a pretty high number. then in a couple of weeks after they have been out for a little bit we're going to do a post-survey and hope that the speed has in fact reduced. >> people hope to expand the project with additional trash companies

fraternity is moving forward. the trial against alpha phi alpha started today. kevin hayes says he was beaten and body slammed daily in the fall of 2013. the fraternity should be responsible for making sure that its members follow the anti-hazing rules. bowie state is not named in this lawsuit. a developing story tonight. some confusion about the final moments of egyptair flight 804. greek officials say the plan swerved and dropped some 10,000 feet before disappearing off radar last week, but an egyptian aviation official disputes that, saying the plane never left its normal altitude. 66 people on board, they all died when the plane went down five days ago. some debris has been recovered and france's navy has joined the search for the plane's black boxes and data recorders. intelligence officialse

emotional testimony in fairfax county today where a lawyer is on trial accused of terrorizing a mclean couple. andrew schmuhl is using an unusual defense strategy, involuntary intoxication. meagan fitzgerald was in court today and heard the testimony from one of the victims. >> reporter: leo fisher spent the majority of the day on the witness stand, first taking questions from the prosecution, then being cross-examined by the defense. leo fisher says he remembers the moment andrew schmuhl forces his way inside his mclean home. fisher said schmuhl tased him first, then tied him up before tying up his wife. fisher testified that schmuhl made some bizarre statements, tellingis

virginia sec, and accused him of using work e-mail to place a bounty on him by a drug cartel. schmuhl started questioning him about his wife alicia, who was fired from fisher's law firm. quote, didn't you let someone go recently? fisher said he fired alicia because of poor performance in october of 2014 and told the jury months earlier he sent her home early from work because of misconduct. fisher says after being questioned for hours inside his home, quote, the next thing i know he knocked he over backward. he put the pillow on me and cuts my throat and starts stabbing me. fisher said his wife started screaming and schmuhl brought up a gone and he shot her and i saw her hair go

i thought he killed her and she fell to the floor. fisher went in and out of consciousness, but he remembers schmuhl leaving and seeing his wife. andrew schmuhl's wife alicia will be tried separately. his defense is saying it was alicia who was calling the shots, forcing her husband who was heavily medicated to commit the crimes. leo fisher explains how his life has changed significantly ever since the night of those attacks coming up at 6:00. the nfl is trying to strong arm the national institutes of health. that's what one new congressional report is claiming. the league being painted in a very bad light about a study on concussions. j >> according to that report, the nfl tried to influence a study conducted by the government on the link between football and brain disease. the report claims the league wanted the national institutes

researcher off the study because they believe that individual was biassed. the individual was also the leading expert on the link between football and brain diseases. the nfl wanted to reroute $16 million in funding to their own committee. it was the taxpayers that footed the bill for this study. the nfl released a statement rejecting all these claims, s saying they went through the proper channels. we have some promising news about a new at-home test for colon cancer. colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death. despite that statistic, millions of americans decide not to have a

this one really heavy downpour that was near reston about 20 minutes ago, that is settling down, but continuing to track off to the south and east. maybe a little bit of thunder and lightning in bull run and manassas. then moving toward brentsville and nokesville. we can see that storm there out in western fairfax county. the sky is very dark there. they're getting those heavy downpours there. as we go forward in the rest of the evening hours, more showers coming through. this is as of around mid evening. we'll see this coming in just to the east of washington around 9:00 this evening. by 10:00, most of it will be tracking farther to our south. things will be settling down. by 11:00, it will be done. temperatures rigow

a man on death row in georgia could get a new trial nearly 30 years after he is sentenced. today the supreme court ruled the jury was tainted by race. >> timothy foster was convicted of murder by an all-white jury. pete williams explains why this ruling is so unusual. >> reporter: this decision is unusual for a couple of reasons. first, the supreme court doesn't usually issue decisions just to correct what they consider to be miscarriages of justice. they uly

want to say something new about the law or keep all the laws of all the states together. this is not the case. the supreme court simply says today that it was clear that racial bias played a part in selecting a jury that convicted and then imposed the death sentence on an 18-year-old man from rone, georgia, timothy foster in 1986 for the brutal murder of a white woman. prosecutors went out of their way to keep blacks off the jury. the second thing that makes this case unusual is that foster's lawyers got access to records after the trial that showed other reasons that the prosecutors said things like, well, if we have to accept a black juror, maybe this woman would be acceptable. at trial, the prosecutors say they threw her off the jury because she was too close in age to the defendant. she was 34. he wa

clarence thomas said for two reasons this was the wrong decision. first, he said for a number of technical legal reasons the supreme court didn't have the authority to decide this case, to step in and overrule a state court, but secondly, he said it's wrong 30 years later to second guess what was in the judge's mind when he didn't find any of these rulings a problem, any of the decisions to keep blacks off the jury a problem. and he said in his opinion the court invites state prisoners to go searching for new evidence by demanding the files of the prosecutors who long ago convicted of them. if they get those files, this court's doors are open to conduct these creditability determinations all over again. back to you. the governor of virginia is under investigation. within the last hour, we learned the fbi is looking into contributions to terry mcauliffe's 2013
