good morning. a lot of the earlier construction has cleared out of the way. we still had road work hanging around 95 southbound at falmouth with the right lane blocked by the work zone. it's not slowing things too much this morning in the southbound lanes. big look at the beltway. overall, everything is rolling along quite nicely. you can see a little bit of a slowdown outbound for you there near the beltway. no report of anything but i'll keep an eye on that one. 66 from fairfax county parkway to the beltway, that takes you nine minutes. listen to our friends on 103.5 f.m. when you hop in your car. since our last report, we got more information out of afghanistan on that suicide bomb attack. we're hearing that 11 people have now been killed in the capital city of kabul. the afghan taliban saying that this was a revenge killing after some taliban prisoners were

the attack happened right before the group confirmed that their former leader, mullah akhtar mansour was killed in a u.s. drone strike last week. thank you, angie. and we told you the afghan leader mullah akhtar mansour was killed last week but they have appointed a new lead er, haibatullah akhunzada. he is known for extremism. officers hurt and at least one arrest at another campaign event. this time outside of a donald trump rally in new mexico. >> it is clear now but there was a huge scene around 11:00 our time last night. police were dressed in riot gear and used smoke on crowds of people after some protesters hurled

police officers and their horses. the police chief is praising his officers saying they used an incredible amount of restraint. the cop campaign senior advisers called them thugs and punks on twitter. and hillary clinton struggled to speak at some points over protesters at a rally of her own in riverside, california, last night. protesters interrupted her multiple times prompting her response that some people are, quote, allergic to the facts. donald trump is now within 30 delegates of officially taking the republican nomination for president. reports out overnight show that he won the gop primary in washington state. >> hillary clinton won the democratic primary but here's where it gets interesting. the win doesn't get her any delegates. voters in washington overwhelmingly supported bernie sanders, the senator, back in march's democratic caucus and gave him 74 delegates th

later in the broadcast with what to expect on the campaign trail today and a new attack ad for bernie sanders. and it is 5:04. happening today, the head of the tsa will face a grilling on capitol hill. tsa administrator peter nessinger will testify before the house and homeland security. this comes 24 hours after a big shakeup at the agency where the head of security was reassigned. just days ahead of the big summer travel season as the agency tries to deal with the long lines at our airports. on tuesday nessinger admitted there were failings at multiple levels. >> i think it is an institutional failure, not the failure of any one individual. >> he wants to create a centralized command team at tsa headquarters. more people are signing up for tsa precheck to shorten their wait times at the airport. the agency is seeing twice as many ic

doubling from 8,000 to 16,000. the application can be completed online but you still need to go to a tsa service center for fingerprinting. all five in the d.c. area have month-long backlogs. applications can also take a month to approve. well, many of you will hit the road tomorrow to get ahead of the memorial day weekend travel rush. but you may not be as ahead of the game as you think. news4's kristin wright is live in tysons, virginia, near i-95. kristin, good morning. >> reporter: yes, good morning. of course, right, we expect a lot of traffic here in virginia, anywhere throughout the d.c. area. but the thing is, we all know to be strategic about it. and that is really the game here, be strategic about it in order to keep your sanity. and that goes the same for this memorial day weekend coming up here. turns out despite what you may think, tomorrow is the worst day to leave. that's according to the

severe weather hitting the midwest right now. look at those tornadoes. they touched down in kansas yesterday. and that is a funnel cloud. look at the damage left behind. six people are in critical condition from these storms. they caused plenty of damage destroying homes and taking down trees and power lines. the structures are unrecognizable as the tornado blows through there. that is insane. fortunately for us, we are not dealing with the severe weather as we start to see the sun work its way over the horizon. >> we would like more of the

city. the mere calm finish over the potomac. what a great look at the morning. the jefferson memorial in the distance. they are all in clear view under a clear sky. so the commute this morning, nothing to worry about whatsoever other than the sunshine delays. you know what those are. if you're coming in from northern virginia this morning, you'll have the sunshine in your face on the way in. and if you are driving back out later on today, you're going to have the sun in your face on the way home, too. temperatures in the 50s to mid-80s later today. if you are traveling and moving out of town for the holiday weekend, locally no worries. raleigh to boston, no problems. only airline troubles today for minneapolis, omaha, kansas city and st. louis. we'll look at that beach forecast for the weekend and the seven-day coming up in ten minutes. now it's time for melissa mollet in first 4 traffic. inner loop at 50 arlington boulevard, we have a disabled vehicle blocking a lane. that does not look to be slowing anything right now. but if that changes and hangs a

dollars without congressional approval. senior advisers say they would recommend the president veto the republican bill once supported by house speaker paul ryan. but if it's attached to a must-pass spending bill, that may not happen. coming up on "news4 today," the very strong words the obama administration has on this issue. live at freedom plaza, i'm erika gonzalez. thank you. a sad loss for a family in hyattsville. prince george's police say a 16-year-old has died of her injuries after she was hit by a car earlier this month. she was hit in chillum at 23rd avenue on may 4th. police say the teen was in the crosswalk but did not have the walk signal at the time of the crash. the driver was not hurt and has not been charged. federal investigators will now be working to find out what caused a plane to crash in orange county, virginia, killing two people on board. the single engine plane went down at 4:30

rhoadesville south of culpeper. state police have not released the names of the victims. back here at the live desk, we continue to follow the president in the air headed to japan. he left ho chi minh city, vietnam, earlier after a two-day stay in the country. when he gets to japan, he'll mitt with the prime minister of that country. he'll make remarks and possibly take questions. we'll continue to follow it. that's the latest from the live desk, back to you. thank you. in the day ahead, more than 200 people are expected to protest the suspension of a dozen high school students. 12 student athletes from culpeper county high school have been suspended for a year over locker room misconduct. the school did not release specifics on the investigations. the parents say the punishment is excessive. the group plans to gather outside the school administration building on radio lane in culpeper from noon until 7:00. >>

capitol hill will fight the zika virus by examining the science behind it. epidemiologist professors will talk about the virus and how it spreads through the body and the traces it leaves behind. now the zika concern has many wondering how to protect yourself against the mosquitoes that carry the virus. the top repellants and one natural bug spray made the list. the top three ingredients in effective bug sprays included deet, picardin and oil of lemon eucalyptus. the repellants last seven hours and precautions are important for pregnant women. >> you still can't counsel a patient with complete precision about what are her risks if she gets bitten. what are the risks to the baby? and how bad may the consequences be? >> consumer reports say sprays are better than

memorial day weekend, people in stafford county are working to honor those who died serving our country. since 2010 planned for the armed services memorial have been in the works. now organizers say they have a major donor announcement to make. they will tell us they plan to fill the community in tomorrow morning disturbing an armed services kickoff breakfast at 8:00 at the stafford county airport. and they will share the information on facebook. time to go to the grocery store and take the tarp off the grill. you know what? memorial day is coming up. it's the start of summer vacation season and a lot of people are celebrating in your own backyard with a cookout. so if you are cleaning off the grill today, make sure you don't have a leak in your gas line before you start it up. also, oil everything so nothing sticks to the grill and starts a fire. be sure to avoid cross-contamination as well. >> i can't emphasize enough washing your hands. even if it means

with the kidnapping and torture of a virginia couple in 2014. new evidence released in court yesterday showed dash cam video from t from the night the officers chased schmuhl and his wife on the beltway. he says he took several prescription drugs that led to the attack. and charges against a falls church nurse accused of inappropriately touching a patient. jared klein faces charges for abusing three patients at hospitals in washington. earlier this year klein was acquitted of similar charges stemming from an incident at dewey hospital center. we now know the names of two people found dead inside a prince william county apartment. 18-year-old danesha simpson and 29-year-old elvin draper were found dead in the apartment on 3600 jugensen drive. the deaths do not appear to be random.

turned himself in following the death of an 18-year-old student. alexia springer was found dead in her home in march from an apparent drug overdose ruled accidental. two men involve in a bold shopping center robbery and carjacking are in jail this morning. 24-year-old william franklin was arrested in waldorf and 26-year-old jeff mendesecky. they were arrested after a shoot-out. a passing driver was hit by a bullet. the suspects crashed two cars in their getaway. >> they shot at a police officer. they injured a community member. this is huge. we've taken two violent individuals off the street and we are about to bring them to justice. >> i t

everyone, not just for me but for everyone. >> federal agents caught him 200 miles away trying to board a flight in newark, new jersey. franklin was arrested in waldorf. 5:34, the governor in virginia could be in for a tough interview on the show "ask the governor" after taking illegal campaign contributions. the bureau chief julie kerry is here to bring us up to speed on the information. >> reporter: governor terry mcauliffe said he never accepted illegal campaign donations. he faced a crowd at a stop in northern virginia. the fbi and justice department are looking into whether his 2013 campaign for governor accepted illegal contribution. >> i rely on the people who did the vetting for it. they said he had a green card from 2007. so the contribution came in and they have unequivocally said he was entitled to write the check.

reports the investigation concerned campaign donations from this man, wealthy chinese businessman wong win-liang. mcauliffe says he doesn't even know if he met wong. and investigators into the governor's campaign donations could hurt his close friend hillary clinton in her bid for the presidency. he says he doesn't think so but the republicans disagree. in fairfax county, i'm julie carey. we have a better idea where the first family may live once they leave the white house. the obamas have picked a home in sheridan, a neighborhood in northwest washington. they went house hunting yesterday. this could be the obamas new address. the phone went dead when he tried to call the realtor. neighbors say they don't mind. >> since i live here, of course i think it's a good

road work happening. we'll detail that coming up. 5:46 right now. and memorial day is right around the corner. that means many of you are about to hit the road. kristin wright is live near i-495. and tomorrow may not be tomorrow's best bet to travel, right? >> reporter: yes, exactly. here's what we think is happening, people are leaving town early, right? thinking that they are beating the traffic, but really the problem is that everybody's doing it. so it no longer works. you're no longer feeding the traffic. so it turns out tomorrow is worse than friday. in fact, travel times on the beltway, 95, 66, all those fun, happy places, could end up taking 50% to twice as long tomorrow. so says a five-year traffic study by the national capital region transportation planning board. we have been going through the ud

that people, in fact, are trying to get the early start tomorrow on thursday on the holiday weekend. in addition, it will be a heavier traffic day on thursday anyway. coming up at 6:00, we'll look specifically at the best time to head out the door for your holiday weekend. that's coming up. >> kristin, thank you. 5:47. happening today, people in fa fairfax weigh in on the fire department getting body cameras. they recently received a grant to implement the program. the public outreach meeting will be held tonight at 7:00. firefighters in prince george's county could be getting extra protection. this comes on the heels of last month's shooting of two firefighters. darcy spencer has details. >> reporter: the fire chief here in prince george's county is considering getting ballistic vests for firefighters. those are just like the vests that

shootings of two firefighters last month. they were on a welfare check call at a home in temple hill. they believed they were told that the home opener was in medical distress. when they forced their way in, they were shot. one of the firefighters died. the homeowner later told police he believed they were intruders. the fire chief wants to make sure firefighters feel safe here in prince george's county. >> we have had several requests from our membership as well as the firefighters union to at least take a look at vests and see if it's something that will make our personnel safer. >> the vests the chief tried on weighs between 3 to 4 pounds and cost $400 to $500 a piece. so this is a significant investment. the chief expects to make a decision sometime this year. in prince george's county, darcy spencer, news4. happening today, michael

lazar will appear in court. the hacker is expected to plead guilty and charged with breaking into the accounts of the bush family and others. and federal prosecutors will seek the death penalty of dylan roof who killed nine parishioners during a bible study in charleston. roof faces 33 federal charges including hate crime, obstruction of religion and firearm offenses. roof targeted the victims because of their race. okay. so let's be clear about this, there is no such thing as a federal student tax. the ftc says scammers are posing as irs agents into paying that made up fee. there's one piece of accurate personal information and they may call police. then they will call the victim back from a fake number that appears on the phone as 911. the fda says this is not real and the irs will never ask you

today a teacher at a newtown, connecticut, school will appear in court on gun charges. prosecutors say jason adams was carrying a loaded pistol inside newtown middle school and pleads not guilty. adams had a valid gun permit when arrested. school policy strictly forbids guns on school property. the middle school is in the same town as sandy hook elementary. 20 first graders and 6 educators were killed in a mass shooting inside that school in 2012. a family from potomac could be the latest victim in a string of wheel thefts in montgomery county. during the night all four wheels were stolen from their cadillac escalade park in the driveway. the thieves left the car resting on cinder blocks. the thieves broke in through a back window and found the lug lock key. since march 1st there have been about 35 wheel theft incidents in montgomery county. good morning, i'm landon
