to visit hiroshima since the united states dropped the first atomic bomb there in 1945. here are part of his remarks before his historic visit to hiroshima. >> this afternoon, i will visit hiroshima. this is an opportunity to honor the memory of all who were lost during world war ii. it's a chance to reaffirm our commitment to pursuing the peace and security of a war where nuclear weapons would no longer be necessary. >> nbc's ron allen is traveling with the president and has a preview from japan. >> reporter: a place so heart breaking no u.s. president has dared visit hiroshima. >> a long b-29 was over hiroshima. >> reporter: obliterated by an atomic bomb 71 years ago and more than a hundred thousand killed. the mushroom cloud rising

the vast devastation. president obama will honor the lives lost but not second-guess nor apologize for president truman's decision to drop the bomb. >> every leader makes very difficult decisions, particularly during war time. >> reporter: a survivor, ito, now 73, wishes an american president had come sooner top to hear his nightmarish memories and his body blasted into the air and buried under the rubble and his mother and sister were killed. i want the president to see the true horror of an atomic bomb, he says. harry truman's nephew -- >> grandpa always said publicly and privately that he made that decision to end the war quickly and save american lives. >> reporter: mr. obama's address is supposed to be brief and subdued and not a big elaborate event. his goal without nuclear weapons remains far from achieved.

japan. in the united states donald trump is now officially the republican nominee for president. after racking up new unbound delegates in north dakota, colorado and pennsylvania, armed with his party's delegates, trump unleashed attacks on hillary clinton while laying out his general election pitch in an interview speech yesterday. it is word of a debate between trump and bernie sander that is making news. nbc's hallie jackson has more. >> boy, oh, boy. >> reporter: his presidential bid making history donald trump is ready to make more. >> i'd love to debate bernie. he is a dream. >> reporter: the businessman hoping to make a deal with democrat bernie sanders for an unprecedented one-on-one debate if they can raise $10 million for women's health charities. online fund-raisers already popping up. sanders eager to do it in the biggest stadium possible. >> it's important that somebody hold him to task

from his muslim ban and as president obama overseas takes trump to task. >> they are not sure how seriously to take some of his pronouncements, but they are rattled by it. >> the president's comments came as a global poll made up of citizens from france, germany, the uk, canada and mexican, and japan say trump's views are having a bad impact for the global economy. 74% say trump's politics have had a negative effect on their view of america and a whopping 78% say trump's political views make the world less safe. jumping off those poll numbers. hillary clinton is now slamming trump as, quote, an urgent threat. speaking to msnbc, she cast doubt on whether a trump/sanders debate will really happen. >> i know they have gone back and forth on this. they seem to be, you know, saying it's some kind of joke. trump

serious. >> but clinton remains in damaged control after that scathing inspector general report accuse her of breaking e-mail policies. andrea mitchell has those details. >> reporter: a firestorm over hillary clinton's e-mail server growing, clinton downplaying the inspector general's report and clinton saying what she did was allowed. >> the use of personal e-mail was a practice by other secretaries of state. >> reporter: the report says clinton did break the rules, not preserving her e-mails, not asking for permission to exclusively use a private server, which would have been refused. >> the difference here is nobody else had a private server in the basement of their home. >> reporter: as for her e-mails saying she didn't want the personal being accessible, clinton phoning in to chuck todd. >> what were you worried about with the personal being accessible? accessible by who? >> nobody wants their personal e-mails made public. you know, that is, i think, a very common, if not unanimous feeling among people.

>> reporter: but it's another investigation that will be far more important to clinton. the ongoing fbi investigation reportedly at issue was there any mishandling of classified information on her home server? the fbi confiscated the private server and a thumb drive with e-mails last august. clinton's close aides cheryl mills and huma abedin have been interviewed by the fbi. all of these revelations are fodder for donald trump. >> probably illegal. have to find out what the fbi says about it but certainly bad judgment. >> reporter: clinton trying to get the focus back on donald trump. >> donald trump is an urgent threat to our rights and to our country. >> what she needs to do, more than anything, to try to fix her problem on the question of honesty and trust worthiness is get this whole thing behind her. we have a t.i.e. at the scripps national spelling bee. 11 yered jang amp

or a hundred thousands. that's what it feels like to know how to change the course of an epidemic and not be able to do it for any reason. >> frightening words there. nearly 600 cases of zika reported in the u.s. over 270 are pregnant women who are at risk of having babies born with birth defects. a superbug long feared by medical professionals have been found in the united states. doctors confirmed that a strain of e. coli with a woman with urinary tract infections, even the last antibiotic of last resort is no help. the first superbug was found seven months ago in pigs and spread to a small number of people in china and traveled to africa, europe, canada and now to the united states. the cdc is investigating how the woman who do not travel outside the u.s. may have contracted the bacteria. extreme weather continues to pummel much of the

this monster tornado touched down in bryan, texas. look at that thing. more than two dozen homes were damaged by. in woodlands, texas, one brave driver got caught what looks more like a lake than a highway. that driver was luckier than these folks whose cars wound up stuck and stranded. nbc meteorologist bill karins is here. usually they say if you can't see the bottom of it, don't drive through it. >> get out. that is what is happening tonight. there have been a lot of water rescues taking place in texas. people have been getting their vehicles stranded and people going to observe the flash flooding going on down just to the south of college station. this is an area of great concern. a flash flood emergency for this region. they have gotten a ton of rain the last 12 hours and another band, slow moving thunderstorms moving over the same exact areas where the crews are out there doing water rescues already. we have had a crazy amount of rainfall in this area. this is houston area here. that hasn't been too bad but north of houston, this area of

between 10 to 16 inches of rain. that is 15 inches of rainfall our doppler estimates and large area and this is where the water is everywhere. imagine a foot of rainfall in about 12 hours. that is why we have flash flood emergencies for this entire region here and flash flood warnings from austin to houston at this time as we continue to watch the slow moving area of storms and life-threatening weather. as far as severe weather goes today and tornado, won't be as much today as the last coupled but from oklahoma to north texas and scattered strong storms from st. louis up to chicago today. the east coast is still very warm but continuing -- i'd rather be hot than dealing with the dangerous weather we have had in the middle of the nation. that is your national weather. here is a closer look at your day ahead. the thunderstorm threat will end this morning and then we will reload and get another round of storms later on this afternoon. we will also see some of those storms pushing into the ohio valley. it's going to be warm and a little more sticky. humidity on the increase a little bit in the northeast. so we will continue to update you on the situation in texas.

inmates. that jail was put on lockdown during the incident. the man accused of stabbing a pregnant woman on death in takoma park face as hearing this morning. the 36-year-old was a montgomery county school bus drivers. takoma park police have not said how the suspect knew the victim. >> to say that we're disheartened, disappointed is an understatement. one year later, a murdered d.c. reporter's family is still looking for answers. charnice milton was killed by a stray bullet in southeast d.c. exactly one year ago kaid. her murder remains unsolved, but that hasn't stopped the determination to catch her killer. from police or the community. a long time community activist wanted to call attention to more than 100 unsolved murders where he lives. >> it's basically a photographic morgue. and it hits people because they did not realize that there are
