it's going to be a mess on the roads today with people getting out of town for the holiday weekend. but right now is your chance. news 4's meagan mcgrath is live at the chesapeake bay bridge at the toll booth. how is traffic looking right now, meagan? >> reporter: well, you can see behind me live here at the toll booth this can often be a choke point, and right now everything is looking pretty good. you can see that we have a slight -- a little bit of a slowdown here especially in the lanes where people are paying cash. but the ez pass, only lanes in the far left, those folks pretty much going right through. we have a slowdown once you get through the toll booth itself because we have 11 lanes going into three lanes. so there is a little bit of drag, but once you get that merge taken

back up on the bridge. so great time to leave. that's what the experts had said. they predicted actually yesterday would be the peak travel day for a lot of people leaving town and that today would not be as bad. and that's what we're seeing out here this morning. they say that the best time to leave today is 11:00 a.m., so really right now if you're going to be crossing the bridge that's your best time. in terms of the worst time to get going today, well, that is from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. that's when we're expecting things to really slow down. now, we are going to be taking a live drive over the bridge itself here in the next half hour, so we're going to show you the conditions there in just a little while. back to you guys at the studio. >> all right. and now to that all-important memorial day forecast, lauryn, we have gone in drastic changes from cold and rainy. >> yeah. >> just a few days ago to now are we already at 90? >> not yet. >> it feels -- >> it is and the humidity is going to continue to pump in.

talked about those all throughout the season. yeah, they're going to be up right around 90 degrees. it's a little hazy out there right now. you can see from our city camera. it is a little on the sunny side as well. temperatures by noon are already going to be into the mid 80s. our daytime high today going to be pushing that 90 degree mark. we didn't hit 90 yesterday. we were in the upper 80s, but we are going to be close. and you can see it is a little on the humid side out there. we'll have more cloud cover as we get into the afternoon and maybe a few showers and thunderstorms, but those will be west really around the shenandoah valley. let's go ahead and get to that beach forecast because everybody's got their eye on the prize for the beach. saturday, sunday and monday not looking too bad. most of the weekend going to be dry as you're driving back on monday these are from the beaches, delaware beaches, looks like we could have some showers. but could we have some showers here and possibly some thunderstorms with an area of low pressure kind of meandering off the southeast coast. we're going to time any rain coming our way out for you and let you know exactly what to expect as we go into this holiday weekend, gu

richmond man join the terrorist organization and even drove him in his cab to the airport. he is scheduled for arraignment june 3rd. if convicted he faces a maximum 48 years in prison. i'm molette green at the live desk. back to you. thanks a lot. developing right now, a man is dead in an industrial accident. howard county police say the man was trapped this morning at a piece of heavy machinery at handsome concrete products in jessup. the victim is an employee there. it's not clear how the victim became trapped. also developing, three people hurt, two seriously in a stabbing in a d.c. jail. it happened last night at the d.c. central detention facility in southeast washington. we're working to find out if the victim is jail staff or inmate. the jail was put on lockdown during that incident. a former fairfax county fire investigator claims chef bullied and sexually harassed and now she is suing. patricia

the fairfax fire department for 20 years. she's now suing 17 firefighters after she says she endured bullying and sexual harassment during her tenure. she says it all started when she became a firefighter in 1996. and only on news 4 she says the harassment continued for years, even at a work conference. >> on a number of occasions i had a couple of firefighters come to my room 2:00, 3:00 in the morning just constantly harassing me about sex. >> two years ago a judge dismissed a federal discrimination lawsuit tomasello filed against the department. this lawsuit comes a month after firefight nicole mittendorff's suicide, it had be

also goes by the name of jules rodriguez, if you've seen her or know where she is, please call police. back at the live desk on this getaway friday, eight automakers just announced a recall impacting more than 12 million u.s. vehicles. it's part of the fallout from defective takata airbags and focuses this time on passenger side airbag inflators. now, some of those carmakers include honda, fiat, chrysler, mazda, nissan and mitsubishi, built between 2002 and 2011. and include pickups, suvs and cars. now, defective airbags have been linked to 13 deaths and more than 100 injuries worldwide. back to you. right now the newly repaired arlington memorial bridge is facing its first holiday rush. for the last year the park service has been installing support beams to reinforce the bridge deck and reduce vibration, but despite the repairs the bridge still needs a

he was driving from bethesda up towards new york city for a business trip. and he realized that the driver was watching his smartphone while they were up on 95. so he took out his smartphone and started videotaping it. the driver clearly is shifting his eyes down and to his left, so the passenger sent us the video and several pictures and let us know that this was going on. so he was on the bus at the time while we were hearing about what was happening. >> this has to have been so scary for that individual. did they say something to the bus driver? did they confront him? >> well, he said he was very scared. he said he wasn't able to read or do any work. he did not confront the bus driver. he said that he was afraid to do that. he thought the driver might get angry. >> so which bus line was this?

beings. so the interaction we have with them is going to give them this structure to become who they're supposed to become, the life that they are. >> you traveled all over the world to do this. many, many countries and you show babies being born and being raised in many different ways. there was one message that i think that we should hear. it's what one scientist said about babies not coming out as a blank slate. let's have a listen. >> instead of thinking of them as blank slates, really we're now realizing that they are the best scientists and the best learners that we know of in the universe. >> and that is part of your message, isn't it? >> yes, it is. because babies when they are born people think that they are blank slates skprks they are not. they are full of knowledge, but they depend on us to create a good environment for them to become what they are supposed to become. >> one of the things i learn from that is within days of being born babies can distinguish between languages, infants can know

i'm molette green at the live desk with details coming in about a murder in southeast d.c. police just moments ago released the victim's name 29-year-old dmi trus stevenson shot to death in the 2700 block of langston place. there's video from the scene. this shooting happened just before 2:00 p.m. on thursday when officers from the seventh district arrived they found stevenson suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. he died at the hospital. d.c. police want to hear from

week alone some 70,000 american airlines customers missed flights due to security wait times. the main thing travelers need to remember, get to the airport at least, at least two hours early. >> even for domestic flights. right now is yoush best chance. just hours from now tons of people are going to be on the highway leaving for memorial day weekend. get away now if you can. >> yes. news 4's meagan mcgrath is live checking out the traffic right now. how are things look sng. >> we are just approaching the toll booth here, take a live look for yourself. we're in one of those ez pass only lanes here on the far right, and you can see, look, we are cruising right through. we didn't have to wait at all. now coming out the other side of the toll booth here we are seeing that merge. basically you have 11 toll booths, all of those lanes have to merge down to get into two lanes on the traditional eastbound span. now, within the last couple of hours right around

of those tornadoes out west. it's amazing how close these people got to them. >> this is in central kansas where we're hearing no one was hurt, thankfully. however, as many as 25 homes were seriously damaged. some totally destroyed. news 4's molettreen has more on the severe weather from our live desk now. molette, what's happening? >> barbara, just in, two confirmed fatalities from those severe storms out in texas. first responders from washington county say one person drowned, the second person suffered a heart attack. rescue crews say another person is missing and are searching for that person right now. some of these water levels as high as 20 inches. we've been following these storms throughout the morning near austin and houston that brought this driving rain and flooded the roads. more than 50 roads closed right now. that is the latest. back to you. >> all right. molette, thanks so much. we know that area very well. that's where i grew up where they're gettio

to be okay in that area. are we expecting anything like that? >> no, thank goodness we're not expecting anything like that. we could have a few showers and thunderstorms really into this weekend, but sunday and monday, maybe a few isolated ones tonight, but other than that nothing like what they're seeing out there. we're not expecting severe weather rk thank goodness. today looking good. we are going to have plenty of sunshine. it's going to be hazy, hot and humid. it's already hazy out there and the humidity is coming back and it is on the warm side. we'll continue to warm up to right around 90 degrees. yes, 90 degrees. before long we're going to be complaining about how hot it is. if you're traveling you can see high pressure in charge. we're looking good all the way through the mid atlantic. and if you're traveling up and down the east coast, still looking good up and down i-95. this is where they're talking about these storms right around there. again, that's not going to effect our area. they're just looking for that to stay south. now, what could affect our area later, some isolate ed chances showers and thunderstorms most

best burger in america. joining us is the guy bringing the west coast famous habit burger to our area and opening this weekend in rockville. people love this burger. of course many of us, like me, have never tasted it but we're going to get to do that today. >> absolutely, barbara. >> who've you got with you? >> this is marco. >> hi, marco. >> our retail district manager who comes around to all the restaurants. he's based out of florida, but he started in california. so he's been cooking burgers for a long time. >> this habit burger started off as a beach shack burger, right? >> beach shack in 1969. >> so it's been around about 40 years. tell us what makes a difference? you're going to make one up for us while we're talking. >> our burgers are fresh. a big part of it is made-to-order, so every order comes in it's made to order. very important. so right now we're finishing off the burger, melting the cheese on it. we cook everything on an open flame. that's very important to

continues the burger. it's like this weekend, memorial day weekend, you're outside. >> having one at home, if we're going to try -- i know the best one will be at your shack. >> right. >> but if i'm doing at my shack, am i going out to buy what kind of ground beef am i going to look for? >> you want 100% ground beef usda ground beef. and you really want a thin patty, because on the grill if it's too thick, it's going to get too charred. >> people think you should start with thick. >> you want a thinner burger, you really do on the char broiling. the next thing is the grill needs to be hot. we cook our char burgers at 550 to 600 degrees. >> okay. >> but at home depends on what equipment you have you want to keep it shut. and then you want to season it before you put the burgers on. >> go for it. marco, you can start making it. let me ask you about condiments and things. first off take a look over here we've got some cheese, american cheese? >> good old american ch

about. we let it melt, take from char broiler, on a griddle, in the restaurant we'd be using, and then melted cheese on it. he's building the burger. start with a toasted bun. very important. >> he said the bun is the most important elements, right? >> that is important even when you're at home char broiling at home is that well-toasted bun. very, very important. >> okay. >> toasted bun, mayo, pickles, fresh lettuce. >> what kind of pickles? >> tomato. the dill pickles the best. absolutely. this is a double char. >> oh, that looks great. >> so now add some sauteed onions. >> oh, you -- >> recaramelize our onions for about half an hour. >> how do you do that? chop up the onions? >> chop them up and use olive oil, seasoning and let them cook on the griddle and cook down. the longer they cook, the better they are. >> is that the secret ingredient? >> that's one of the secret

this weekend. sunday and monday before 10:00 or after 10:00, just to kind of avoid the heart ache and headache of traveling out to the eastern shore. as for the express lanes in virginia, saturday normal, lanes reverse northbound at 2:00 in the afternoon. sunday northbound lanes shut down at 7:30 in the morning for rolling thunder and reopen at 11:00 in the north direction. of course washington going to be a bit busy as well. monday lanes open northbound all day, then we have a lot of parades around. national me memorial day parade on monday begins at the corner of constitution and seventh street. as for road closures we have the entire list on our nbc washington app. some of them sixth, ninth, 12th, 15th between pennsylvania and constitution, that is just some. now, of course more parades around town talking about falls church annual day memorial day, some road cur
