at 9:00, and right now on "news4 today," we are in for a gorgeous day, but -- the rain is coming back. tom's tracking the best times to light up the grill, and also let us know when the storms could impact your plans for memorial day weekend. and from the skies to the roads, the rush is on for millions traveling today. the big issues facing anyone trying to get out of town. plus, tragedy on the hudson. the mission a pilot was on moments before his plane crashed into the water. we're going to have much more on that developing story, but hoping you have some plans to get outside and enjoy it, because today is going to be the day. good morning, everyone. i'm angie goff. >> and i'm david culver. it is all about times. especially those who want to do cooking out today.

created danger spots in southeastern texas. the national weather service says a tornado which you see right here, uprooting trees, damaging more than 150 homes. right there, where helicopter crews had to pull folks just outside of off then from high floodwaters, trapped in their cars. we know of at least twoem that have died and three others reported missing in knows floods. developing this morning, dramatic pictures out of new york city where rescuers tried to save a 56-year-old pilot whose plane crashed in the hudson. police now identified him as william gordon of key west, florida. his body recovered by divers after the vintage world war ii era plane he was flying went nose down into the water friday night. witnesses were watching the plane flying moments before the crash. >> said to them, look, a plane is landing, and all of a sudden, it hit the water and in seconds it went down. >> yeah. e we thought it was like a glider, and i saw the nose go

>> well, the p-47 thund per bolt was scheduled to perform at a long island air show this weekend. investigators still need to determine why the plane crashed. here we are at memorial day weekend, and it is far more than just an extra day off school or work. it's about remembering those who have lost their lives serving in the military, and there are tributes planned today in the district. along with that, some road closures that are in place in about 30 minutes for thunder alley. the event is sponsored by the veterans group rolling thunder. last night they converged on the national mall at the vietnam memorial to pay tribute to those service members who lost their lives. >> and that wall down there it's been said billions of times is a wall of healing. and that's what we come down here to do. to hold on to each other and support each other and make sure that we're still on the process of healing. >> 22nd street between c street and constitutional avenue in

starting at 9:00, three minutes ago, until about noon. all memorial day weekend. 9:00 in the morning until 9:00 in the evening. and yellow ribbons and fallen warrior cards suspended from the rafters in service for women in a memorial. derrick ward is live at arlington national cemetery with the story. derrick? >> reporter: yes, outside the women in military service memorial to take a look. this symbol, has its foundation in some principles in yoga and also you see symbolic, the boots, helmet and rifle. that is also symbolic of what this is all about, and a lot of it has to do with ribbons. what's happening is each ribbon is going to be given to a volunteer who will attach a name to it. these are the names of service members killed

11th, 2001. right now, 6,852 is the number right now. people will be given those ribbons to sort of do a memorial for each of those people. we talked to the guy who started this a few years ago. he said it's about those ribbons each giving honor. >> the sacrifice of our fallen warriors is our responsibility and we honor the fallen with our fullest attention, because that's what we do. >> and a lot of people show up and don't have a specific name and so we just give them a general name or can look people up by their hometown, and there have been a couple times when somebody has said, doesn't matter, give me anything. we give them a name. they look at the date of death and say, that was my birthday. >> yeah. so that's what it's really all about. each person walking around with that ribbon on this weekend and bringing them a little closer to what the true meaning of memorial day is all about. going on both days of this weekend. it's actually a ceremony inside there going on right now. we are live at the women in service memorial at arlington

>> derrick, thank you. and also happening today, the united house of prayer is holding its annual memorial day parade. a look at road closures under way right now. they should wrap up around 2:00 this afternoon. be prepared, though, for detours and plan for extra time to get around these areas. a huge memorial day flag display in gaithersburg. it is called the flags for our heroes event. you can see the display of 750 large american flags on the lawn at bore park, next to gaithersburg high school. each flag will be sponsored by a person or organization to honor someone who is in the sponsor's hero. >> and if you're still looking for something to do, told you about a lot of things going on. still a lot more to choict on the nbc washington app. breaking down the best events by the day. all you have to do, search memorial day weekend. a man is expected to be okay after he was stabbed on a metro bus last night. me t

stabbed that man on a bus. this is in silver spring. she says she did it after he spit and punched her. this happened around 8:40 last night. police say the woman ended up getting away. it's not known if they knew each other. we are now learning more about another disturbing crime that started at a metro station in montgomery county. court documents accuse 25-year-old dominick simmons of rob as teen boy at a bethesda metro station, forcing him to get on a train and sexually assaulting him inside the chevy chase building. metro riders say more should be done to alert people. >> how do we not hear about these things when they happen? how did we not hear about the rape we learned about earlier this week until six weeks after it happened? >> metro says the teen did not report the assault right away which is why there was a delay getting the information out. well, you will want to take advantage of metro tonight if you plan to hit the town. tonight is the last night for late-night service.

it will end at 3:00 on sunday, and starting on june 3rd metro service shuts down at midnight seven day as week. all part of a system's upcoming safe track maintenance plan starting next weekend. more chaos outside another donald trump rally as the presumptive gop nominee tries to win support in california. san diego police say about a dozen people were arrested after protestors and trump supporters started to throw trash and shout at each other. it happened after supporters left the downtown convention center around 4:00 friday afternoon. afternoon. police in riot gear had to keep the two sides apart. don't expect bernie sanders to debate donald trump unless he becomes the official presidential nominee. trending on twitter earlier this week. trump says it would be inappropriate to debate a second-place finisher. sanders campaign says it is still interested in going head-to-head with the gop candidate. his campaign says it's received two television offers to air a

the new ones of such high quality police have to step in to help bar owners determine what's real and what's not. news 4 jackie bensen shows how officers are starting to make progress. >> reporter: the staff here have seen a lot of i.d.s over the year, but recently they noticed something new. an influx of extremely high-quality fake i.d.s. implt think in the last six months it's been getting real big, and we've been seeing people, a lot younger, and then a lot of out of state licenses. >> reporter: arlington county police staff special night light details in the area on weekends. they let technical support when a bar or restaurant by its best efforts can't tell if an i.d. is fake. >> we get called over by security staff, we will run them. it they don't come back to a data base, a good indicator it's not a good i.d. >> reporter: police say u

are often unaware of the very serious consequences. >> what we like to say is, it comes with adult consequences. so you can be arrested for identity theft, arrested for fake i.d., and it has other consequences as well, whether they're, you know, colleges find out, the schools they're attending, it affects their ability to get hired. >> jackie bensen with that report there, and police here in arlington say 25 of those high-quality fake i.d.s mostly seized last weekend and mostly from north carolina and south carolina addresses. it is one of the worst bribery and fraud scandals to rock the navy. three current and former navy officers charged in connection with a scheme to provide classified ship schedules in exchange for prostitutes, lavish trips and other gifts from a malaysian defense contractor. the contractor overbilled the navy by more than $34 million. three of the navy officers involved are from virginia.

all new this morning, montgomery county police puts this out. they need your help to find a missing 81-year-old man, willie brooks. last seen in gaithersburg friday around 4:00 in the afternoon. here's what he was last wearing. a gray coat, pink shirt and black pants. they say he has dementia and his family is really worried about him. call police if you see him. some area little leaguers will get all-star treatment today. nationals manager dusty baker and players from the team will visit six little league sites this afternoon. the young players will get a chance to ask questions, get autographs and snap a few pictures. definitely good weather for t. highs near 90. yesterday, got close, maybe a little hotter today. kind of humid now, because we have this tropical system now sitting off the carolina coast. i

now, may briefly become tropical storm bonny tomorrow late afternoon cruising along the carolina coast, but plumes of tropical moisture will be streaming north of that system coming up our way, and as a result, we've got an increasing chance of showers and thundershowers coming in late sunday into sunday night. now, that storm will track along the carolina coast and die out off of cape hatteras in a few day, but that tropical moisture is streaming up our way here by late in the day tomorrow, and into tomorrow night. and right now, though, we're all dry. temperatures around the region are in the mid-70s, from the shenandoah valley to the chesapeake bay, reagan national, at 74. great day for a bike ride or motorcycle. temperatures in the 70s here another couple of hours. by noontime, low 80s. during the middle of the afternoon, up near 90 degrees and a little less humid. play ball tonight! a big game at nats park. this is a very important series as they're playing a very good team. the st. lo

then it will be mid-80s. warm and dry. then a light wind. seventh inning down around 80 degrees. by the last out, upper 70s. a great night for baseball. at the beaches, a terrific day there. water temperatures only in the upper 60s. it will be up near 80 right at the beaches farther inland. sunday afternoon and evening, storms likely there. a little cooler, mid-70s, increasing clouds and mostly cloudy on monday. chance of showers there at the beaches. temperatures only in the low 70s during the afternoon. inland, in the upper 70s on memorial day, but we've got a likelihood of downpours tomorrow. late afternoon and evening with thunder and lightning perhaps over an inch of rain and then off and on showers inland as well on monday. mainly in the morning on monday, highs upper 70s in the afternoon. back to work and school on tuesday, wednesday, thursday, and into the mid-80s. another chance of storms friday. that's the way it looks. >> and as tom showed us there, the heat is back, and soon

mosquito control trucks are out spraying across the state and in maryland. all in an effort to prevnt

spread of the zika virus. if you live in montgomery county you won't see one of those trucks because it's not part of the spray operation. the director of the office of emergency management explains that the state will be asked to spray if there is a confirmed case of zika. >> they will be spraying in a localized area around that identified case in after effort to prevent mosquitoes from biting that person and spreading it to others. >> the maryland department of agriculture says standing water is obviously going to attract more mosquitoes and urges homeowners to drain water every week. a lot of times when a child loses a sibling to cancer they find it hard to talk about. that was the case for one maryland brother until now. matteo leech was 7 when he lost his 5-year-old brother mason to a brain tumor. in their short time together pe bonded over their love for the game of soccer and mason waited for mateo to come home from a d.c. united game and tell him e
