showers. take a look at where the rain is now. down around fredericksburg and st. mary's county. calvert county same deal. let's zoom in towards d.c. you can see some of the showers around the kettering region and clinton and andrew's air force base here. this one continues to move off towards the east very slowly. heads around upper marlboro. there is another line up to the west. again, most of us remaining dry tonight, but can't rule out a couple of showers. maybe a rumble of thunder. that is pretty much the case over the next couple of days. we'll break it down for you coming up in just a minute. a security scare at the white house now over. the white house was locked down after somebody threw a container over the fence. this happened on the north lawn just before 1:00 this afternoon. a d.c. hazmat team had to move in to investigate. turns out the container was just filled with some papers inside. one p

custody. president obama was in fact inside the white house at the time having just returned from arlington cemetery for the memorial day ceremony. police are hoping a witness may come forward after a deadly shooting at a shopping center in woodbridge, virginia. police got calls for shots fired in a parking lot. when officers got there, they found shell casings and no victim. friends of the victim drove him to the hospital where he died. >> someone saw something. when we arrived, a lot of people scattered. what we need is those people to come forward and give us that information that they know. >> investigators say that shooting happened as a bar was letting out. only on 4 tonight. a maryland state trooper hurt in a bad accident on new year's eve back on the job. the trooper himself says he survived the crash on i-95. the trooper is actually eager to get back on the

helping a couple whose car was stranded here on the side of i-95. he says cars were zipping past him at 70, 80 miles an hour while he was doing so until one of those drivers slammed into the back of his cruiser. trooper tristan philip's cruiser was pinned against the guardrail. he had injuries to his neck, back, and knees. >> this is my old vehicle here. >> reporter: six months later, phillip has returned to the job at the barracks in jessop where that battered cruiser still sits in a side yard. >> when i first saw it, i was taken back to the actual accident. wow, this is really bad. >> reporter: he says he remembers little of what happened after he was hit, but he does know he was sitting in the driver's seat on the shoulder and heard brakes squeal. >> the impact actually occurred right here. and he slid around and actually hit this whole side

vehicle. >> reporter: and this part hit the car right in front of you? >> yes. >> reporter: the car you were helping. >> yes. >> reporter: drivers are supposed to shift over a lane when police or fire are on a shoulder. these types of incidents are still happening. at least seven troopers or other patrol cars have been hit on the side of the road just since january. >> at first, i was really in shock. i'm not sure if it was adrenaline. you don't realize that you're actually injured. when things start to calm down, you really start to feel it. >> reporter: he's undergone physical therapy and has been placed back on light duty at the barracks handling desk work, but wants to be back on the road soon. >> i'm just blessed to be here. >> reporter: there were charges filed against the driver in the crash. we'll tell you how that turned out on news4 at

for the men and women in our armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice. it was part of a special tribute at the national memorial day parade, which recognized the 75th anniversary of world war i ii, the 50th anniversary of the vietnam war, and the 25th anniversary of operation desert storm. >> reporter: we're told some 200,000 people were out here lining constitution avenue. some of them veterans themselves. earlier today at the world war ii memorial, we spoke with a woman who drove here for hours on memorial day because she wanted to show her appreciation. >> memorial day means freedom. it means sacrifice. it means courage that so many thousands of men died for our freedom. >> reporter: there are many reasons why people come here. >> my father was a world war ii veteran who fought in the south

connections and others just want to say thanks. >> just to be with the people who fought for us. >> reporte >> the living veterans are so much older now and they're dying at such a rapid rate. >> reporter: veterans like jack young, a medic in the army, who along with his comrades stormed the beaches of normandy in june of 1944. >> he continues to turn back around and wade into the ocean under brutal heavy nazi fire to pick up wounded soldiers out in the ocean. >> reporter: she had known him for years. she said he received several military honors like the bronze star and purple heart after being wounded by enemy fire. >> my friends texted me that his veteran father died this morning. >> reporter: that veteran was corporal jack young, one of countless american heros that we remember tod

developing right now in prince george's county, police are looking for a killer after a woman was found dead in the laundry room of an adelphi apartment building. somebody made the discovery this morning. tracee wilkins is live. she spoke to people who live in that building. what are they saying tonight? >> reporter: right behind me, you can see police are still here on the scene. they just removed the body a little while ago, but they are focusing their investigation still around that laundry room, trying to figure out who killed this woman. detectives worked from morning to afternoon investigating the body discovered in the laundry room of this garden style adelphi apartment complex. >> they discovered an adult w

they were pronounced dead on the scene. >> reporter: it was the body of a woman who was badly beaten. her name has not been released. by late afternoon, people who identified themselves as the possible victim's family members came to the scene. others waited hoping it wasn't someone they knew. >> that's the only reason why i'm out here. i want to see who it is, if i can. >> reporter: the laundry room where the body was found is located in the basement of the complex and is accessed from an outside doorway. police took pictures of vehicles in view of that laundry room and went door to door, talking with neighbors asking if they saw anything or anyone suspicious. >> aour detectives are working o establish a suspect and motive at this time. >> reporter: what happened to this woman, who did it, and why. >> it is scary because you are just sleeping and you don't hear nothing. it is a dangerous neighborhood, but died in the

it shouldn't even be open at that time. >> reporter: people who live in this community have been out here all day long wondering who was the victim. prince george's county police have still not released the woman's name. back to you in the studio. turning to the race for the white house now. hillary clinton took part in a memorial day tradition in her adopted hometown of chappaqua, new york. supporters lined the streets to catch a glimpse or snap a photo. clinton tweeted earlier that our fallen heros deserve profound gratitu gratitude. from the east to the west, right now bernie sanders is holding a rally with supporters in oakland, california. earlier today, bernie sanders took part that a memorial day parade in san francisco. he says it is not only important to remember the sacrifices of those who came

the families who are grieving today. 12% of republicans and only a quarter of democrats say their respective parties are very responsive to ordinary voters. that's according to a new poll from the associated press and the center for public affairs. that same poll found 62% of the republicans and 46% of democrats think their party is only slightly or not responsive at all. as the va continues to face tough questions about wait times for medical care, the agency is showing off a new super clinic aimed at turning those problems around. that charlotte clinic is now open. it can serve 25,000 to 40,000 veterans per year. it has dozens of medical departments under one roof. >> it is part of a larger program that va has been working

>> the new multimillion dollar facility is a prototype for future clinics aimed at taking the burden off va hospitals across the country. on this memorial day we remember those who died while serving in our country's armed forces. today president obama laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at arlington national cemetery. he spoke about one of the more recent fallen heros who died rescuing isis hostages in iraq. >> the americans who rest here and their families, the best of us, those from who we asked everything ask of us today only one thing in return, that we remember them. joshua wheeler's sister says he was exactly what was right about this world. he came from nothing and he really made something of himself. he

stories of the lives others gave for all of us. >> it's also been a very busy day of memorial day events in falls church. former illinois state senator mark rhodes delivered the keynote address at the veterans memorial. he also helped lay a wreath there. it was a parade and a 5k fun run to follow. the crushi inin ining hearta parent who has lost a child is enough, so imagine when that grief is compounded with a surprise tax bill. pat lawson explains why it is happening and what's being done to fix it. >> reporter: a graduate, a son, a brother. >> i still think about him every day. >> reporter: andrew wall had just received his diploma from mount st. mary's university in 2009 when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

just four days after turning 23. >> my brother was sick for about six months. that was a really traumatizing event for me and my family. >> reporter: the family were saddled with grief and then a financial gut punch. andrew's $75,000 in student loan debt now belonged to his parents. they negotiated with providers for five years until the debt was forgiven. they thought the burden had been lifted. then came a message from the irs. >> the letter stated that the $75,000 in andrew's loans that had been forgiven would be declared as income and would actually be taxed. my parents were blindsided. >> reporter: but it didn't come as a surprise to eric working as an aid for chris coons. they investigated and found it was happening to thousands of families across the country. by law, the irs taxes forgiven

bill to change that. >> it's important to get something done here in congress that will actually help families. >> reporter: the measure has spo support on both sides. >> the tax dollars the irs would be giving up is relatively small. the impact it would have for families who have lost a loved one would be huge. >> reporter: it means more for eric because he helped author the bill. >> i really miss the guy. i'm just glad that something -- the event that occurred and that his passing can effect a policy in a way that helps other people. >> that was pat lawson there. 40,000 verizon workers are expected to return to work on wednesday. employees have reached a contract agreement with verizon. that includes the first retail contract for verizon workers, 1,000 new jobs, and 11% in

we saw rain across the area on our sunday here around town. we have seen rain on our monday, memorial day, east of 95 and over towards the eastern shore. right now just dealing with some cloud cover. took me five hours to get home today from ocean city. we have the clouds around the national harbor area. a great shot looking towards the potomac capital wheel. 78 degrees. a little bit of a heat index right now. it is on the warm and humid side. this is where we've seen some sun. only 72 in annapolis. 70 over towards cambridge where the rain has been falling all day. still falling now around annapolis and the chesapeake bay bridge a

st. mary's county seeing the rain. rain making its way to berkley county, west virginia. even around the d.c. metro area, we have a couple of showers. here is one in parts of northeast. heads up along route 50. cloud cover moving back in. also showing storms moving in from the west. we may see a couple of showers tonight. we're also watching the remnants of bonnie. tropical storm bonnie came on shore just the over day. still a very good circulation with that. notice all the moisture coming off the atlantic in towards our region and then back out. this is going to be the case tomorrow too and probably right on through the day wednesday. let's time it out for us on future weather. more shower activity tonight. maybe a couple of rumbles of thunder. now tomorrow that front kind of meanders to our south.

replace. >> i think he gave everything he had honestly. >> reporter: spontaneous smiles sparked by this fun-loving colonel. >> he can never be duplicated. there's just one gene montague, the rock star. >> reporter: in woodbridge, virginia, david culver, news4. there is an investigation under way in arlington after a man who took part in the rolling thunder rally died. a group of bikers were traveling on i-66 yesterday when they came upon stopped traffic. the victim identified as craig van brunt wasn't able to brake in time and fell off his bike. he was wearing his helmet. crowds lined the streets in rockville today for the city's 72nd annual memorial day parade. just a few blocks from there, a

three very alert women stopped a happy hour drink from becoming a very dangerous crime. >> it's a story that's gone viral on social media. the women witnessed a man trying to slip drugs into another woman's drink while she was in the restroom. it's what they did next that has people talking. >> i see this guy looking all squirrely. he's sitting on the table doing this, which you don't really see people do. >> reporter: they were just having happy hour drinks when monica spotted the act go down. >> i seen something drop into the glass. i'm like, did that just happen. >> reporter: she told her friends they went into the bathroom to find the woman and told her what they saw. >> this is kind of

just saw that guy you're with put something in your drink. she said, oh, my god. he's one of my best friends. >> reporter: she went back to the table and avoided the drink even when her best friend clinked the glass. the three women told the restaurant and the three checked the security cameras. they caught the man red handed. they called police and stalled until they came. >> we're going to do our best to make sure that nothing happens to this girl and make sure that something happens to this guy. >> reporter: but what was even more shocking for sonia after the arrest she says people started coming up to her saying the same thing had happened to them or friends. >> someone from each and every one of the tables had a story of how it happened to them, how it happened to their sister, how it happened to their roommate. men and women. >> wow. by now, you've seen the video. a child gets into the gorilla

grew online after the gorilla was euthanized. we've heard from zoo keepers about why the animal had to die. it was a movie that introduced racial consciousness to a generation. it's video that has sparked a firestorm across the country and we want to warn you in advance some of it is pretty difficult to watch. a little boy at the cincinnati zoo with a 450-gorilla. >> animal rights activists are holding a vigil at the zoo today saying the gorilla didn't have to die, but zoo keepers are defending their decision saying they had to protect the boy's life. >> we've heard from thousands of people around the world, colleagues all the way from jane goodall and zoo directors all over the world with both sympathy and support for

people that know gorillas well, people who research them in the wild and work with them in captivity, know exactly what decision we made and why. >> the boy is recovering at home now. a petition is calling for his parents to be held responsible for the gorilla's death. it already has more than 170,000 signatures. a lot of people were taking advantage of the nice weather to visit the national zoo today. many of them were talking about that incident at the cincinnati zoo. >> that's right. as mark segraves reports, people had some mixed reaction to it. he's live outside the national zoo for us tonight. mark? >> reporter: yeah, that's right. you know what happened in cincinnati, those kind of incidents are rare and don't happen very often at all. here at the national zoo they do have gorillas. they're kept in the ape house behind glass walls seemingly impossible for people to make their way into that pen, but the lion's den here is similar

in that there is a fence and a moat barrier. someone did try to jump over the fence a year ago. the video is dramatic. a mother's cry to her son can be heard. as others watch frightened and amazed. the gorilla is sceeen hovering over the 4-year-old boy and then dragging him through the water. zoo security kills the 400-pound endangered silverback gorilla. >> there must have been a better way, but there wasn't. >> reporter: this father said he would have taken action. >> i would have jumped in there. yeah. there's no way. i would have got a stick, something, and tried. let it crush me and

>> reporter: this mother hadn't seen the video until we showed her. >> where were the parents? where was she when this happened? that's what it comes down to. that's dangerous. >> reporter: as for the decision to kill the gorilla, people were torn. >> there could be a different way, but i don't blame their authority because they did what was good during that moment. >> reporter: there's also the question of how the child was able to get into the gorilla pen. in 2015, a man was able to climb over the fence at the lion den here at the national zoo, but was stopped by security before he was able to cross the moat. at the cincinnati zoo, the small boy was apparently able to climb through the fence and then fell into the moat. >> unacceptable. you figure they should have had some kind of forethought for something like that happening because kids do do things like that. >> reporter: now the organization that accredits the cincinnati zoo and the national zoo here in washington tells me

four drills each year for incidents just like this. news4. drone video shows the devastation in parts of texas ravished by floodwaters this weekend. rivers overflowed. streets were washed out by all the water. at least six people have died and the area may even see more flooding as rain continue this is week. they are getting hammered. >> they have pretty much all spring. they're going to continue with some rain chances as we go through this week. >> not what that need. >> no, not what they need. we're going to continue with rain chances mainly east of i-95. i know there was some sunshine outside there today, especially in the northern shenandoah valley. that's where we found some temperatures up near the mid 80-degree mark. it's not too bad out there. we have a few isolated showers out there. if you are in the shenandoah valley, we do have some thunderstorms just to the west of you right now.

we're going to be talking about that. temperature 79 degrees here in washington. we dropped a degree. 78 degrees. excuse me. all right. temperatures are going to continue to come down as we go throughout the overnight. we're probably going to end up in the upper ha60s. there will be some patchy fog. if you're traveling overnight, be aware of that. here's a look at the radar right now. look at this stream of moisture. that's all coming from what was tropical storm bonnie. now it is just an area of low pressure sitting off the coast of south carolina. you can see it right here pretty much right around myrtle beach and coming through wilmington, north carolina. it is just going to kind of hang out there. mostly this stream of moisture continuing to move up to the east of i-95. then this is a frontal system, a weak front. we're also seeing a few showers just inside

we have a little one that popped up right there by takoma park. this is the way it is going to be as we continue into the evening. keep an eye on the sky along i-81, especially west. we could see a few showers and thunderstorms as this weak cold front moves through the region. let's go ahead and show you the future cast. we continue to have some rain east of i-95 off to the eastern shore into southern maryland and the northern neck. maybe a few showers popping up around the metro area. here comes that front. i don't think it is going to make it inside the beltway, but could see some showers and thunderstorms. a few possible showers overnight. we're going to be mostly dry tomorrow. doug and i have taken out the chance of rain for most of you are areas. east of 95 you could see a few showers. tuesday's forecast similar to today. east of 95 cloudy with isolated showers. west it's going to be warmer and a little bit of sunshine. for your commute
