disorder. a lot of people have elements of narcissism. this is this love, high, self-esteem. and i would say majority of world leaders probably possess a fair amount of that. think about the confidence you have to have to consider yourself capable to be a world leader. that's different than having narcissistic personality disorder. somebody with narcissistic personality disorder really has problems in their relationships because of their level of self-love. these are people so grandiose they lack empathy, they believe they're special, exploit others and underlying this for many of them is actually this fragile view of themselves and that's why they get so upset if there's any kind of criticism or anything that seems to threaten that view that they want to have of themselves. >> you're talking about the secret feelings of, you know, shame and insecurity they hold within. >> in some cases. not everybody, not all narcissists are going to have that or people with narcissistic personality disorder, i should say, but many will. >> okay. would you say it's more with men than women?
11:17 am
so it's much more commonly occurring in men than women. you know, we don't know it occurs in roughly about 5% of people in the population. and we don't know exactly what causes somebody to develop this personality disorder, but there was an interesting study that was done in the last year that suggests that this might be caused by parents putting undue praise and unearned praise on their children just telling their child all the time you are so smart, you're so special, you're so wonderful. and just going way overboard without that without the kid actually earning that praise. >> so when they fall short this is how they react? >> exactly. yes. it doesn't fall in line with what they have been told throughout their whole lives. >> well, that makes me wonder is there a difference between a perfectionist then and a narcissist or someone who has npd? >> absolutely. a perfectionist is somebody who really wants to make sure they do a ve thorough job on everything. that person doesn't necessarily possess these personality qualities where they feel like they're better than everybody and they

treatment. >> when we talk about mental health professionals, if you're not around someone every single day, is it possible for them to be able to diagnose somebody correctly? >> no. so this is what kind of bothers me. you see some people on television talking about donald trump and how he's clearly got narcissistic personality disorder. i think that, look, i don't know donald trump, it's not possible for me to know that or for anyone to know that unless they know him very, very well. you can't just base somebody's diagnosis on how they present themselves outwardly. so the public persona can be very different than the private persona. we know that very well. in fact, some people who are sosh pa sociopaths, killers out there in the public, these can be very charming and endearing people. so you actually can't make any assessment about somebody unless you really get to know them. now, donald trump may have this, he may not, but i think it's inappropriate for anyone to really make that statement with confidence without knowing him well. >
11:19 am
is actually affecting their relationship and they want to get help and seek treatment, what is the treatment? >> you know, there isn't a great treatment out there actually. so one thing that's interesting is that narcissistic personality disorder tends to burn itself out as people get older. it kind of peaks in your 20s, but as you reach your 40s and 50s it tends to diminish in intensity. but really the treatment is therapy. but even that hasn't been shown to be all that effective. when you have this, you kind of have it. >> you got to talk it out it sounds like. >> talk it out or go through life with it and burn a lot of bridges and have some rough relationships. but that's kind of the way it is for many people. >> all right. dr. josh weiner, thank you so much for stopping by. >> my pleasure. >> back to you ncht start of hurricane season, the steps you should take today whether you live on the coast or not. plus, the first baby with zika-linked problems born in the united states. what we know about the newborn's ondition. c
