after a deadly shooting in hyattsville. police believe that witness may have tried to help a victim who lived in a

jackie is in hyattsville with reaction from people in the neighborhood. jackie? >> reporter: people who live in this neighborhood are outraged. >> it gets me angry knowing that fact, that i can't come outside and just be relaxed. i have to worry about things like this. it's not right. >> reporter: carlos is a volunteer firefighter who says he was horrified to hear what he immediately knew were gunshots near his home around 1:00 this afternoon. >> we heard gunshots, right? when we went outside, we just saw the body. that was pretty traumatizing. >> reporter: police say two residents of a nearby home for people with intellectual and physical disabilities were walking to greendale park. they passed a parked car with two people inside. police say words were exchanged between one of the group home residents and someone in

car pulled a gun and fatally shot him. police tell us that witnesses say the other person in the car appeared shocked by what happened and got out and tried to help the victim. >> i'm reaching out to that person directly. i'm asking you, and if this person has reached out to you and told you this story, reach out to us. you're not directly accountable for this, but you know what happened. and this person who would do this, that's a dangerous person. >> reporter: at this time police have not released any information about the make and model of the vehicle they're looking for or any description of the people inside. live in hyattsville, jackie benson, news4. a packed house tonight for a more detailed look at plans to refurbish the westwood shopping center in bethesda. hundreds of people showed up to ask questions and sound off on the project. it includes renovating the shopping centernd

a washout. we'll explain. i'll see in you a minute. d.c.'s democratic primary is less than two weeks away now, and tonight candidates for the d.c. council participated in a town hall on marijuana policy. the forum was held at the black cat music venue on 14th street and northwest. topics included d.c.'s medical marijuana program and the ban on social use of the drug in the istrict. the democratic primary will be held june 14th. tonight a teaching assistant and basketball coach is accused of sharing pot with a 13-year-old in arlington. zachary van dyke is charged tonight with selling the teen marijuana, then smoking with the teen ativ van dyke's home last week. van dyke was a freshman basketball coach at washington-lee high school. the school administration has

investigation. they want to know if he's sold to any other teenagers. a trial of a man accused of sexually assaulting a mother inside her d.c. home. it happened on a. street southeast. anthony pitt is accused of committing a spring of crimes over a few weeks, including cutting off his gps ankle monitor while on probation before that attack. the man killed in an apparent murder-suicide at ucla was an engineering professor. william klug was in an office this morning when an unidentified student shot him, then took his own life. the lapd chief says the gun was found along with what might be a suicide note. ucla canceled classes after the shooting today, but the campus will reopen tomorrow. finals and graduation will go on as scheduled next week. millions of cars recalled for defective airbags. next at

julie williams and lolly lyman were found murdered at their camping lodge. the fbi still does not classify it as a cold case. >> reporter: a place of tranq l tranquility and beauty transformed into a scene of horror. on june 1st, 1996, the bodies of julieanne williams and lolly williams were found. two decades later, their killer is still at large. >> i bristle at the term cold case. >> reporter: adam lee is the special agent in charge of the fbi's richmond division. he says julie and lolly's murders still considered an active investigation. >> we will stop at nothing to find justice in the case and until we have exhausted every means. i know it's been 20 years, but we continue toh

to exploit the existing evidence and try and obtain new evidence. julie and lolly are not forgotten in the richmond division of the fbi. >> reporter: that comes as welcome news to tom williams, julie's dad. hopes have been raised and then dashed many times for the v victi victims' families. one man was charnged with their murders. it was classified as a hate crime, using rights of targeting the women because they were lesbians. two years later, when evidence at the murder scene failed to match rice, the charges were dropped. so is rice still a person of interest? >> though i can't talk about any individual in the case, i can tell you that nobody has been exonerated in the case. >> reporter: and advances in dna technology could now provide new information. >> the ability to

circulated through social media. some scary news tonight. if you're in the market for a new car, believe it or not, automakers are still selling new vehicles with those potentially faulty takata airbags which led to the biggest recall in american history. the exploding airbags have killed 10 people in the u.s. and injured more than 100. federal regulators have approved the sale in vehicles with the defective airbags as a temporary measure because of replacement of parts that use inflated designs. the autos that still use the airbags will have to be recalled eventually, but they don't go bad for at least six years. a fort washington preschool employee will have to stay in jail for her designer

the most part. starting off june on a good note. even yesterday, the end of may, we were sitting at 87. 88 degrees towards hagerstown. the heat was on especially back to the west. and tomy expect all these numbers along the east coast to be a lot cooler, at least by about five degrees. the reason, we still have the remnants of tropical storm bonnie to the south. it still looks like a very healthy storm. it's not a depression. the tropical storm could become one again as it makes its way to the north. it will provide more onshore flow and to the west we have more moisture, too. we'll have a squeeze play of moisture. that means more clouds tomorrow. speaking of bonnie, hurricane season starts today officially. we already had two storms, alex in january, and bonnie. the next storm will be colin. both of those even before the season started. tonight not a bad night.
