soldiers from ft. hood are among the dead and missing tonight in fast-moving floodwaters. and they're some of the world's elite pilots. the blue angels and the thunderbirds. tonight, why two of their planes went down. first at 11:00, he heard screams and ran to help. now one of the good samaritans in a deadly maryland shooting spree is out of the hospital. >> carl unger is home with four bullet wounds, and he's talking to news4 about the man he says smiled before shooting him and killing his friend. eulalio tordil was indicted today on eight counts, and that includes two charges of first-degree murder. shomari stone is live at montgomery mall with an interview you'll only see on news4. >> reporter: wendy and doreen, carl unger tells us it happened so fast, at one point he's trying to help a woman who was screami

ground thinking he's going to die. >> i did feel bad, the whole situation. >> reporter: tonight, carl unger speaks about the horror he experienced at westfield montgomery mall in bethesda, maryland, on may 6th. he tells me 62-year-old eulalio tordil seemed to enjoy shooting people. >> he looked dead at us and started smiling before he started shooting. >> reporter: it started when unger stopped at the mall for lunch with his friend, mike winffel. they heard a woman screaming in the parking lot. they say she was being carjacked by eulalio tordil, who was allegedly on the run after allegedly killing his estranged wife. >> he just started shooting. >> reporter: how many shots did he fire at you? >> it was like -- i know he got me like four times. >> reporter: unger was shot in his foot, leg, three times in his back and in the shoulder, where one bullet remains. his friend, mike winffel, died. >> reporter: what was going through your mind? >> i thought i was dead. i said, well, it's over now. >> reporter: unger spent t

he's now at home recovering with help from his family. proud of your dad? >> yeah. >> reporter: why? >> because he saved someone who really needed it. >> reporter: the woman he saved survived. less than an hour later, police say tordil drove to a giant in aspen hill and tried to carjack include dina molina -- claudina molina, who was shot and killed. >> he ruined a lot of families, including his own. >> reporter: unger says will take months to recover and says his insurance won't cover all of his medical bills. he says he's used up sick leave and vacation time. his friends started a gofundme page. shomari stone, news4. >> thank you, shomari. a letter went home to parents at gaithersburg high school tonight after a crash claimed the life of a freshman student. he was

along busy route 355. news4's dorothy spencer is live with more on how it happened. dorothy? >> reporter: well, doreen, we are live along 355, also known as frederick avenue. the teenager was riding his bicycle here along the sidewalk. if you take a look over here, a business had placed a sign right there in the middle of the sidewalk. the teenager apparently hit that sign, ended up in the street, and that's where he was struck and killed. the teenager was riding his bike here on the sidewalk when police say he hit a commercial sign that someone had placed on the sidewalk and fell into the street. an 18-year-old woman struck and killed the teen here on frederick avenue in the heart of gaithersburg. >> i know he was coming from the high school and he go to his job, but i don't know where exactly he was working. >> reporter: the teen, identified as 16-year-old santos escobar

he was hit around the 2:30 dismissal from school around the corner from his home. he was a ninth grader at gaithersburg high school. in a letter sent home to parents, his principal described him as hard-working and conscientious, a history buff who loved michael jackson. >> i think it's just heartbreaking, of course, for the family of the young man who passed away and also for the person who hit him. i know that for me that's one of my biggest fears as a driver. >> reporter: the crash shut down the busy commuter route for four hours during rush hour. many parents disturbed to later find that a young person had lost his life here in such tragic circumstances. >> i personally went to gaithersburg high school myself, and just from what i've been seeing on the news, it's very, very unfortunate. me being a father of two children, i just can't imagine what the family's going through at this point in time. >> reporter: that's certainly true, it's going to be a tough day tomorrow at gaithersburg high school. grief counselors will be on hand to help students deal with

wendy, back to you. >> all right, darcy spencer. thanks, darcy. well, developing tonight, the army is still searching for six soldiers who went missing after their army troop truck washed away in the floods of texas. three soldiers are confirmed dead. the waters swept their truck into a rain-swollen creek near ft. hood. three other soldiers were rescued. they're in stable condition. the army is searching by air and water, also using dogs to search for the six missing soldiers. we're going to have more from texas coming up in about ten minutes. and doug camera's in storm center 4. it's not letting up for the people down in texas, is it? >> no, it isn't. they've seen storm after storm of 3, 6, 10, 14 inches of rain in texas from houston to dallas down towards san antonio. right now more than half of the state is under flash flood watches. you can see what's happening. there is a storm the size of texas sitting right on top of it. more very heavy rain tonight. dallas right now under a flood

rains and they'll see more potential for heavy rain tonight. for us, we have areas of heavy rain back to the north and west. nothing around the d.c. metro area right now, but back to the north and west, we are tracking this area of rain in through the panhandle of west virginia, in towards clark county, virginia, washington county, and this will move right into frederick county and northern loudoun county. very heavy rain, heavy enough to prompt a flood warning for hampshire county and mineral county until 1:45 in the morning, so watch out if you're back into this area. we have seen some flooding on area roadways. for us, we'll be talking about more rain chances the next couple days and maybe the chance for severe storms. your forecast in a minute. >> thank you, doug. it's just a snapshot of a big problem across our region, wild atv rides on busy streets. prince george's county police say the rider in this video doing tricks and seemingly taunting an officer is piera barber. he's a convicted sex offender and faces charges of reckless and negligent driving. the man behind the

michael roan, is also facing charges tonight. the thunderbirds and the blue angels, they're known for their skill, rescission, their grace in the air, but tonight two teams of elite military pilots are investigating two crashes, one that happened just after the thunderbirds flew over the president. that happened in colorado springs where one of the thunderbirds went down after flying over the air force academy graduation where president obama was speaking. that pilot was able to eject, later met with the president. in tennessee, a tragic outcome. we have new video tonight which shows one of the navy blue angels going down while practicing for an air show outside of nashville. that pilot did not survive. >> you know, the blue angels are probably the premier air p precision team in the world and we're honored to have them. and it's heartbreaking to have

he was a somali colonel. he's accused of publicly executing people and committing other war crimes, but until recently, he worked as an airport security guard at dulles airport. yusuf abdi ali, who now lives in alexandria, was placed on administrative leave from dulles after a recent cnn investigation that highlighted his alleged brutal past. news4 has covered these accusations against ali several times dating back to 1998. questions about his past have followed him for years, most recently in a federal civil lawsuit. >> ali is entitled to immunity as an official or former official of the somali government. >> it's very troubling and it causes a lot of questions to be asked about what type of vetting was done. >> the metropolitan washington airports authority says ali was properly vetted by the private security contractor known as master securit

implement its safetrack plan, district leaders want to ease the traffic burden you'll have to deal with because of the extra cars and buses on the road. mayor muriel bowser rolled out the details today. starting monday, the city will expand rush hour parking restrictions on some major roads. bikeshare will only cost you 2 bucks for one-way trips. there will be a moratorium on construction projects in public space, and you'll see more traffic control officers at major intersections and bridges. and in a little bit more than a month, four new loudoun county transit buses will start offering additional service to the silver line. they'll connect the east gate park 'n ride on tall cedars parkway and the dulles park 'n ride lot to the east metro station. the county hopes they will decrease traffic congestion. new details coming in tonight from that deadly flooding in texas, and the rain there is not done yet. coming up, thete

swollen creek today. three other soldiers were pulled from the water. they are recovering at a hospital. we will stay on top of this throughout the night and have updates on "news4 today." boxing legend muhammad ali is in a hospital in arizona tonight. the three-time world heavyweight champion is suffering from a respiratory issue. a hospital spokesman says ali is in fair condition, but sources are telling the "associated press" this could be more serious than previous hospital stays. the 74-year-old ali suffers from parkinson's disease. he's been hospitalized several times for respiratory problems in recent years, most recently in 2015. well, what had been feared for weeks was confirmed today by a minnesota medical examiner. music legend prince did die from an overdose of a powerful painkiller called fentanyl. the medical examiner found high levels of it in prince's bloodstream, officially calling his death an accident.

maryland, we have seen those die away and that's exactly what's happening right now. but you can see still some cantivity to the north. heavy rain right now around the panhandle of west virginia. on the wider view, look down to the south and east. bonnie is still there. it was the remnants of tropical storm bonnie. well, now it's back to a depression. you can see it's a very well-defined depression, could become a tropical storm again. it would still be bonnie, and it is expected to move back out to sea. but right now it moved up, then back down. it's going to be out of here eventually. what's coming our way is some moisture that right now continues to affect texas, dallas, and really, most of the state under flash flood watches. there are numerous warnings here. they have been inundated with rain over the past month or so, and that looks like it's going to continue. more heavy rain back towards louisiana. now, our forecast tonight not nearly like that. 74 degrees. dew point up to 67. so there's a lot of moisture in the atmosphere, and that's going to lead to some of that heavy rain tomorrow. here's the local radar. storm team 4 radar showing nothing around our immediate area, b

frederick, back towards leesburg and winchester. these are the areas seeing that heavy rain. jefferson county, west virginia, very heavy rain right now along 340 coming through harpers ferry right down towards cablestown. martinsburg, boonsboro, up towards frederick seeing some of that rain, and frederick will get that rain and heavier rain over the next 30 minutes to an hour. there's the rain. here's future weather. watch tomorrow morning around 7:00 a.m. we still have some showers around, so some of us could be seeing some wet roadways early tomorrow morning. they get out of here, then we see more cloud cover, a few peeks and pokes of sun. behind it, we have a couple showers, a couple thunderstorms around, too. i do expect to see some thunderstorms. any storms that develop, biggest threat tomorrow will be the potential for very heavy rainfall. so, hour-by-hour forecast. watch out for showers early. showers around 10:00, yeah. some areas will see them, 78 degrees. 80 degrees by 1:00, then rather stormy in the afternoon with a high of 83. not everybody will see the rain tomorrow, but remember, it will f

the redskins wrapped up this week's ota session today. their entire rookie class has been signed. everyone is under contract. today kendall fuller, the former virginia tech standout, he signed his rookie contract. the team also released their dates for the training camp schedule. the first day of practice is in richmond thursday, july 28th. fan appreciation day saturday, august 13th. the camp closes on august 14th. all practices are free and open to the public. you can find the full list of dates on our website at nbcwashington.com. now, before camp, the redskins dressing up. pierre garcon hosting his annual all white party to benefit the boys and girls club of greater washington area. quarterback kirk cousins and plenty of teammates on hand to show him support. always a good sign with his teammates there. the event now in its fourth year and pierre is not finished by any means helping this community. >> definitely want to keep improving and keep helping the boys and girls club. that's what
