all of this activity generally moving toward the south. as we look to the weekend, pretty quiet tomorrow, but there is a potential for strong to severe thunderstorms on sunday. more on that coming up, but here's what's happening right now. notice some heavy rain south of fredericksbu fredericksburg. here is that heavy rain in fairfax. here's what we can expect this evening. showers right now in the district. heavy rain moving out of fairfax, out of reston, out of bethesda. this continues to move toward the south over the next couple of hours. once this line is out of here, we're going to be mainly dry from here on out. that lone shower in the panhandle in west virginia remains a lone and isolated shower. you can see only some scattered activity up in pennsylvania, parts of western maryland and west virginia.

activity continues to sink southward out of the region. 74 degrees. still tracking scattered and heavy rain in spots and 75 degrees. some wet roads for the evening hours. mainly dry by 9:00, 10:00, and 11:00. more on what you can expect this weekend coming up in ten minutes. now to an early morning raid that neighbors say looked like something out of a hollywood movie. investigators continue combing through the home in leesburg for clues. david culver has the latest on the investigation there. >> reporter: right now, police are questioning several people connected with this early morning raid. they won't say what sparked it, but several agencies are involved. we're talking local and federal. we're talking fbi, the atf, we saw members of the police gang unit. >> it was extremely scary only because we were not

such a thing. this is a very family-friendly oriented neighborhood. >> reporter: 5:00 a.m., red and blue lights illuminating the home across the street. look at the second floor windows. police lights making sure no one escapes. one person after another walks out of the house, hands up. some of them just children. police had the adults lift their shirts as they checked for weapons. notice the sniper's red laser focused on that man's body. >> it was like straight out of compton. it was just like the movie. >> reporter: that's the voice of another neighbor. too frightened to show her face. she just moved here from california. >> people told us it is really safe around here. it's a nice area. you just never know. >> have you ever had problems with the folks that live there? >> no. no, never. >> reporter: she didn't recognize the many

police escorted out. some still being questioned. out here standing guard all day police and federal agents in tactical gear. notice they're facing outward, watching for those who may be approaching the home. >> it was frightening. it was just frightening. >> reporter: now changing her habit when it comes to locking her door. >> i was like lock the door. double bolt it. >> reporter: just look behind me. you can see the police crime scene tape is still up. police expect to keep this road closed into the night. in leesburg, virginia, i'm david culver. news4. some breaking news now. metro transit police are looking for three men they say sexually assaulted a woman on a yellow line train last night. these pictures just released show three persons of interest. the woman said she was riding between eisenhower avenue and braddock road about 9:30 last night when the three men approached her and asked her to perform a sex act. when she refused, they assaulted her a

running off. chaos on the kutz bridge in d.c. a man crashed his car and then allegedly tried to carjack several drivers. that's when construction workers jumped into action. the scene stopped traffic. darcy spencer to spoke to one of the workers in an interview you'll see only on news4. >> reporter: that's right. all this played out right here on the kutz bridge this morning. i spoke to a guy who was a bridge tech out here. he says that he served a couple of tours in afghanistan. he was among the guys who tackled the suspect. he says his military training kicked in. you're strong? >> i guess so. >> reporter: kyle dill, a navy veteran who served two tours in afghanistan, was working on the kutz bridge when the suspect ran by. what was he saying? >> that he needed a doctor, that his life was over. >> reporter: dill said

training in kandahar took over when he and others took the suspect down. >> we kind of wrestled him to the ground and we held him there until the cops arrived. >> reporter: the suspect first crashed his car into a bus by the lincoln memorial. then when we drove up on the sidewalk, his car broke down. he then allegedly tried to carjack several cars. that's when the construction wo workers detained him for police. police say they had to taser the man to get him into custody. >> it's been transporting to the hospital for evaluation. >> reporter: dill says he hopes the suspect can get the help he needs. was he strong? >> he was a pretty strong guy. very upset. incoherent. i hope that everything is

>> reporter: that military veteran took some playful teasing by his fellow construction workers out here today. they were calling him a hero. he said, no, i'm just an average joe doing what he had to do faced with difficult situation. we have some new information about that gunman behind the security scare at the white house. according to court documents, jesse olivieri told a secret service officer that he came to d.c. to, quote, shoot people. today he was charged. an agent shot olivieri after he allegedly approached a white house checkpoint with a gun. police say it may have been an attempted suicide by cop. the illegal placement of a sign on a city sidewalk may have led to the death of a teenager riding his bike yesterday. 16-year-old santos escobar died yesterday in gaithersburg. he struck a commercial sign that

the busy street, and then was hit by a car. the city is investigating and we're told a business could face a $1,000 fine for placing the sign on the sidewalk. santos worked at a restaurant. the restaurant is now raising money for his family. if you would like to help, open our nbc washington app and search teen funeral. metro's major overhaul begins six hours from now. all stations will close at midnight so crews can start setting up. then the single tracking begins on the orange and the silver lines in northern virginia. this is the first phase. it is going to be a yearlong safetrack program. mark segraves talked to riders who are gearing up for what's ahead. >> i take metro a lot. it's going to be really difficult for me to find other means of transportation. my option would be something like uber or maybe like a taxi. i'm just going to have to prepare for the worst and just hope things

next couple week. >> reporter: that seems to be what lots of metro riders are doing, planning for the worst and hoping it is not that bad. >> probably still metro. plan a lot of extra time for my day. >> reporter: the yearlong track work will cost about $60 million. 11 lawmakers who represent northern va irginia wrote in a letter, we oppose any effort to create new dedicated revenue streams or repurpose state resources or raise taxes on hard working virginians. the lawmakers suggest metro has been wasting money and they say improvements can be made from a more efficiently run system, lowering the pay of employees, and from fares of metro riders. >> the idea that metro can tighten its belt or change labor laws or something of that nature is just

>> reporter: now all of us are going to be impacted by this closures one way or another, but the hardest hit in this first phase will be in northern virginia on the orange and silver lines, particularly between the east falls church metro station and the boston station where there will be trains running only every 18 minutes. back to you. montgomery county has announced some steps today to try to reduce the impact of safetrack. the county department of transportation told our i-team that up 17 extra ride-on buses are going to be deployed. there will also be free ride-on service between metro stations that are shut down during these repairs. the county may also retime its traffic lights and make changes to street parking. developing now in texas, helicopters and boats are searching a 20-mile creek for four missing ft. hood soldiers. a truck overturned yesterday and a group was swept away by

floodwaters. jay gray is outside the nation's largest military post where five are now confirmed dead. >> reporter: the training shifted to tragedy in a matter of seconds. >> they launched from owl creek and they were possibly floating towards white flint. >> reporter: a tactical rover like this one rolled by the floodwaters, dumping at least 12 soldiers who were swept away. five now confirmed dead. >> tragedy extends well beyond ft. hood. >> reporter: so do the floodwaters following communities across southeast texas where it's been raining for more than a week now. fort bend county is one of the hardest hit. >> 20% of the county is under water. >> reporter: and farmland turned to swampland. ranch hands

suicide. >> the defense received some critical testimony today from a top doctor who says the death was not a murder. michelle castillo and her estranged husband were locked into a bitter divorce battle when one morning her kids woke up to find her missing. her body was found in the basement hanging in a shower. prosecutors say her husband suffocated her, then put her body in the shower to make it look like a suicide. a virginia medical examiner ruled the death a homicide, but the defense lawyers turned to maryland's chief medical examiner for a different view. dr. david fowler testified he studied the autopsy photos and other evidence and came to his own conclusion. asked the defense, what is that opinion? dr. fowler, in my opinion, it is consistent with a suicide. do you have an opinion as to whether it is consistent with

police say they see more and more of these cases of students capturing and sending inappropriate images. they say the incident at fairfax high school is just the latest and it is one many students say they learned about on twitter. students at fairfax high school are just days away from the end of the school year. >> people have been blowing up about it. >> reporter: lately the buzz hasn't been around summer plans. >> i actually heard it on the internet. >> reporter: instead students are talking about 20-year-old phatsakorn pongpasit, a senior who police say was arrested and now facing child pornography charges. >> there was a complaint from a student that believed he was filmed while he was using the restroom or attempting to change in the restroom stall. >> he really showed up to class pretty angry about it because that happened to him, but he didn't know what was going on. >> reporter: police say cases similar to this one are becoming more and more common. a sergeant says teens are using their phones to

inappropriate images of each other not realizing that in most cases that's criminal behavior. >> we've tried to get the word out teaching within the schools to let these students know most of these offenses are felony offenses. >> reporter: police are hoping this latest incident is a reminder to students about how and when they should use their phones. >> i don't know how we're going to fix that, but at least we can start with stuff like this. >> reporter: now the fairfax county school district tells us a letter went home this morning to parents telling them about the incident. police tell us that the suspect is due back in court on august 16th. new details in the ucla murder-suicide. a professor may have saved countless lives during wednesday's deadly on campus shooting. gunman mainak sarkar had two professors on his hit list, two guns, tactical gear, and a lot of

he killed professor bill klug in an office, but then apparently did not go after the second teacher. an engineering professor tells us l.a. public radio that he and a colleague heard the two shots in klug's office. the colleague then held that office door closed so the gunman could not get out. it was a short time later that they heard a third shot believed to be sarkar taking his own life. the witness said sarkar likely ended that rampage early because he believed he was about to be caught. areas of heavy rain for some and sunshine for others, but humidity runs high everywhere right now. here's the latest on storm team 4 radar. this activity moving to the south-southeast. this line is really starting to fizzle out as it makes its way into southern prince william and fairfax counties. but i'm a keeping a close eye on this area o

made and ultimately it should be their call. tens of thousands of prince george's county residents use metro every day and some are concerned that the county isn't prepared for the impact of safetrack. now the county says it does have a plan to help you get to work. >> the biggest message we're trying to get out is start planning now and plan ahead. >> reporter: prince george's county officials are saying they have a safetrack plan, but metro riders don't know what it is. >> i'm one of those people who relies on public transportation. >> reporter: an attorney focuses on county transportation. >> i'm not going to try to drive into the city. that's going to be a nightmare. >> reporter: other jurisdictions are supplementing with buses. county reps have told metro they don't have the resources to supplement metro closures and the plan was to divert ridership. >> not everybody is going to be able to telework or alter their

you have to have ways to get people using public transportation and not crowding the already crowded roads. >> reporter: now county officials are saying they have the money to charter buses if necessary. starting june 18th for 16 days eastern market to minnesota avenue and benning road will all experience line segment shutdowns. blocking prince george's riders who depend on the orange, blue, and silver lines. then in the fall, greenbelt and college park will experience 25 days of single tracking. >> we want folks to look at telecommuting options and getting alternative work schedules. >> reporter: starting next week, you'll be hearing more about their plan to deal with safetrack. >> you'll be hearing more from our county executive. we're going to communicate with our folks in the streets. we have a very robust and well coordinated plan for safetrack. >> reporter: to get the
