quiet weather for most of the coming week. at 5:30. so one more morning rush hour moving toward independence avenue. back into you. it's 5:01. today is the first morning commute under the safetrack program as jack said. we have you covered from the rails to the roads. the storm team 4 x 4 out monitoring the traffic impact and how that could affect your drive it work. we begin our team coverage with molette green at the ballston metro station where trains will be single tracking. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, i just spoke with one of the passengers who uses this this station every day. he said he didn't change his plan this morning, but expects his ride home will be a little bit tricky as things start to really move along in the day. i want to just show you something interesting over here of course, we have the shuttle bus sign here, metro safetrack shuttle plan in place. you've got the metro workers

doing a lot of this work to make the rails and the system better. all eyes of course on what will happen between east falls church and ballston with this it will continuous single tracking and this part of it lasting until june 16th the. that means trains are going to be sharing a track, reduced service, wait times lasting as long as 18 minutes. we won't see it all until this kind of plays out, until we get into it this morning. but you are warned if you're taking the train to expect crowded platforms, crowded trains, passengers of course in the run up to this urged to consider an alternate transportation option, many of the passengers that i've been talking to have said that they don't have any other plan. they have to use the rails. and so they will be preparing as best they can. this work pushes three

maintenance work all into one year. not a cure for metro's issues. we've heard that from the general. all of this designed to help the system work the way it is supposed to. address some of the critical issues flagged by the feds and of course to prevent the smoke and fire incidents that are very scary and very dangerous for this system with so many thousands of people depending on the rails to get to and from work every day. of course today is the big test. coming up in the 6:00 hour, we will talk to the metro general manager to find out about safetrack. back to you. now, if you need another option to help you get to work, a woodbridge man is implementing new slug line pickup sites at the vienna metro south side, between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. and then foggy bottom metro at 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. there is an app that lets you know in real time w

or drivers are available. go to nbc washington and search slugs. to accommodate the extra traffic because of metro safetrack program, ddot issism p inch mplementing parking restrictions, rush shower extended by 30 minutes monday through friday. there will be emergency parking restrictions along those streets. signs are posted letting you know when you can park and cannot park somewhere. businesses in the district say they're already feeling the impact of metro safetrack program. trains thousand stop running at midnight on weekends instead of 3:00 a.m. according to wtop, cabs will begin offering shared rides anywhere within one mile of a metro station or at a cab stand while safetrack is under way. >> we've set up a special metro safetrack section on the nbc washington app. you can see all the scheduled closures and when stations near you will be impact

one road in gaithersburg. a downed power line scorched the pavement there. strong winds also tore down large tree limbs on brink road. those roads are back open this morning. today flooding is the concern for many of our historic sites on the national mall. this is video from 2006 when a transparency dumped several inches of rain on the district and flooded several buildings. tonight federal administrators will meet with park and museum officials to talk about ways to keep buildings along the mall safe if we have that kind of rain again. developing right now, new concerns over that widespread flooding in texas. you're looking at the town of ang angleton where hundreds are under evacuation orders. yesterday several people there had to be rescued from high water. as of this morning, the floods have been blamed for 16 deaths. it could be a similar scene in florida where tropical storm colin could make landfall as early asda

in several parts of that state, they're bracing for intense winds and as many as 8 inches of rain. it could also cause tornados in some areas. for now emergency crews are giving out sand bags and opening shelters. and on the other side of the country, firefighters are making a lot of progress on a wildfire in southern california. it's about 80% contained. the fire damaged several buildings and was threatening thousands more. all the evacuations have been called off. well, this might be one of the most difficult commutes in a long time around here, but not because of weather. chuck is tracking whether you will need your sunglasses for your drive home. >> district of columbia! she is beauty, she is grace, miss d.c. is miss united states. meet the proud hometown winner with a lot to celebrate. >> reporter: i'm kristin wright at the east falls church metro station in arlington where people are getting here

hopefully clearing. 295 south after east capitol, word of a broken down vehicle. it may be off to the shoulder and no delay behind it so far this morning. back into you. 5:13. let's get another update on this first monday morning commute of the safetrack program. >> kristin wright is live at the east falls church metro in arlington. how are things looking so far? >> reporter: good morning. it's slow so far because we're still early in the morning. i just talked to a rider about 20 minutes ago who says that he actually changed his work schedule so take he is getting on the train now at 5:00 something in the morning rather than usual time of 7:00 because he thinks things will be bad. metro's general manager paul wiedefeld has said that he expects extreme crowding and long delays. wayne will get on a train here soon. tell us how early did you come today and what

usual, but i expect long delays. not so much crowded trains at this time perhaps, but definitely the delays. >> reporter: good luck getting where you're going and thanks for talking with us. i know you have to go. so look out for shuttle buses. they are free. you will see signs like this one. and that might help alleviate some of the crowding and delays. back to you. >> kristin wright, thank you. 514. the baltimore police officer facing the most serious charge in the death of freddie gray goes on trial this week. officer goodson drove the van. as the driver he's said to have had primary responsibility for gray's safety. goodson faces specific secretary degree murder offense called depraved heart murder, it carry as maximum of 30 years in prison. motions in his case begin today.

back in session in a trial against a virginia lawyer accused of brutally attacking a mclean couple. today jurors will see text messages sent just before the 2014 attack. defense attorneys hope to prove that schmuhl was so heavily med indicated, he was impaired and just following his wife's orders when he assaulted leo fisher and his wife, sue. today jury deliberations kin in a capitol hill rape case. antoiwon pitt is accused of sexually assaulting a mother inside her home back in october. pitt is also accused of committing a string of crimes in this two weeks including cutting offer his ankle monitor while on probation before that attack. just a few years ago he was named one of the best in the business and now a news photographer is being remembered for his accomplishments. david gilkey died yesterday in southern afghanistan. he's on the right. gilkey was on assignment for national public radio when his convoy came under atta

died in that attack. for a closer look at gilkey's accomplishments, search this. pr journalist in this our nbc washington app. police are asking for your help for information on a shooting on sunday morning. this happened in temple hills about 1:30. when police arrived, they found 48-year-old edward pane suffering there gunshot wounds. he was pronounced dead on the scene. police do not believe this was a random crime. a $25,000 award is offered for information that leads to an arrest. hillary clinton is now fewer than 30 delegates short of what she needs to capture the democratic presidential nomination. she won yesterday's primary in puerto rico by a 2:1 margin over senator bernie sanders. voters in six states weigh in tomorrow including california. tracie potts joining us later to talk about what to expect on the campaign trail today. the names of two young journalists from virginia will be memorialized later this morning. you might remember alliso

lawrence gray jr. from brunswick. search teams recovered their boat yesterday. police are trying to figure out who killeded a 24-year-old man in woodbridge. naji alexander mason was shot at this apartment complex. another person was hurt in that shooting, as well. some neighbors tell us this is not the first time they have seen violence in this area and they plan to make some changes. >> ever since got armed security, they have had a lot more problems. >> definitely going to keep an eye on my family late at night for sure. >> my lease is out. i'm done. >> there are now 11 homicides in prince william county so far this year. in 2015, there were nine for the entire year. happening today, people will commemorate the 72nd anniversary of d-day. a wreath laying ceremony will take place in bedford, virginia. officials say for the first time a public reading of all the nearly 2500 people

mayor bowser's bill would gradually increase businesses. businesses would have until 2020 to pay the full $15 an hour. if it passes tomorrow, a final vote could happen later this month. a 66-year-old went missing while hiking but has been found. this was in western maryland before after a massive search, she was eventually found. a new report is criticizing dozens of youth facilities. the maryland attorney general's office called conditions dismal at youth facilities across the state. the report cites the lack of supervision, treatment and educational opportunities for juveniles who are incarcerated. the department of juvenile services says it is taking active measures to increase safety. we will find out today whether the family of the 3-year-old boy who fell into the gorilla exhibit in cincinnati will takes charges. prosecutor joe dieters has scheduled a news conference for

it's going to cost a little more this week to fill up at the pump. gas prices are up six cents since the end of may, but still nearly 50 cents cheaper than this time last year. national average for a gallon of regular gas is $2.36. d.c.'s average a little higher at $2.52. hear lanmaryland, 2.34. virginia, $2.20. a new report says virginia is not supporting students there low income households. commonwealth institute says virginia provides roughly 14% to 19% in extra money for each student who qualifies for free school meals. the national average is 29%. governor terry mcauliffe wants to target more resources in schools with high concentrations of low income students. today the super bowl champ yi don't think champions have which is visiting the white house.
