nomination could dampen turnout today in california, where a clinton win would make it all-but impossible to stay in the race. she and her campaigner in chief, taking aim at donald trump. >> i'll make america great again. that's a code word. what it really means is, i'll make america great the way it was 50 years ago. >> reporter: and this morning, signs president obama is already working to unify the deeply divided party, speaking with bernie sanders on the phone this weekend. the president could endorse clinton as early as this week. but the question, what will sanders do now? it was eight years ago today, hillary clinton conceded to barack obama. >> although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it got about 18 million cracks in it. >> reporter: in an interview with

>> ronald reagan evolved on many issues. >> reporter: rejected by reagan's son, michael. tweeting if his father was alive, this is the first time he would not support the nominee of the gop. trump has new marching orders. on a conference call with surrogates, urging them to escalate attacks on the judge and journalists. the people asking the questions, those are the racists, according to bloomberg politics. i would go at him. trump's campaign manager telling nbc news, that report is not accurate. and sources familiar with the conversation tell me that donald trump and the rnc chair have had conversations in recent days. many republicans think this is a big mistake, what trump's been saying. made worse that he's publicly mitigating a lawsuit over a personal, a private business. but doing

campaign to take the blame. that's in the recommend of the acceptable. the idea that you're going to attack a judge on his ethnicity is the very definition of racism. these are the attacks that you're going to hear when trump engages in the bare-knuckle politicking. >> thank you, as always. let's turn to tropical storm colin, making landfall on the florida coast overnight. this morning, more than half of the sunshine state under a state of emergency, as this storm heads up the coast and soaks the southeast. kerry sanders in charleston, south carolina. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. thousands of residents are waking um without electricity in florida, georgia, in south carolina and a little north to north carolina. tropical storm colin's center, or an eye, has moved off the coast, into the atlantic, near savannah, georgia. this

colin is taking aim at the carolina coast. a powerful one-two punch. torrential rains and damaging winds. >> this is a mess. >> reporter: this video, as the storm swept over a house near jacksonville. >> hard to believe. >> reporter: seen from two angles, the homeowner convinced it is one of several reported tornadoes. the roof ripped off in seconds. overnight, a path of destruction, through florida and parts of georgia. >> it was so fast. it went by so fast. >> reporter: fast and furious. thousands without power this morning. along the coast, waterspouts spotted offshore. high waves over sea walls. swamping the deck of this bar. and flooding low-lying areas. in parts of florida, the storm tore boats from their moorings. sinking some, leaving others

fighting to save this one. and off bradenton beach, a dramatic rescue. these two saved by the coast guard. this is all that's left of their houseboat. everything they own, gone. >> i'm lost in words. >> it's a tragedy. but i'm alive. >> reporter: on monday, some airlines had to cancel flights in florida, due to tropical storm colins. meantime, the rains associated with the tropical storm, which is off the coast of georgia, extends more than 500 miles to the southwest, all the way down to south of tampa, where they were hit with seven inches of rain and may get three inches of rain today. matt and savannah, tropical storm colin has been a soaker. >> it's going to be moving quickly. it will start losing its strength quickly, too. we may see it lose its

advisory. we'll keep you posted on that. we're looking at heavy rain in tampa. another position pushing through. in the meantime, colin is 90 miles south-southwest of charleston. this is moving to the northeast, at 39 miles per hour. we have tropical storm warnings along the coast. more flood watches through florida as the front pushes down. you will see the heavy rain through tampa. this front pushes offshore quickly. bad news for florida, the front lays there, dumping more rain. we have flash flood warnings until 9:00 a.m. could see three to five inches of rain. and along the carolina coast, we could have another inch or two. this thing is moving, very, very quickly. breaking news to tell you about overnight. 11 people, including 7 police officers, were killed

bombing in istanbul today. at least 36 people were wounded. there was no immediate claim of responsibility. going to turn to a growing controversy surrounding the sentencing of a former stanford university student convicted in an on-campus sexual assault. this morning, the judge and the student's father are under fire after the promising athlete received just six months in jail. nbc's gadi schwartz has the story. >> reporter: brock turning never steps foot on stanford grounds again. but many saying the six-month punishment sends the wrong message. brock turner could have been looking at 14 years for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman behind a dumpster on stanford's campus. caught in the act by two swedish students who

>> it was horrible. it was hard to see. >> reporter: but instead of 14 years, the judge has ruled that turner will spend six months in jail, eligible for parole in three months, citing his age and lack of record at sentencing. a probation officer writes, turner is remorseful. saying in his own words, i can barely live with myself. i can't even get out of bed in the morning. i think about it every second of every day. but the lenient sentence has enraged thousands. online, a petition circulating with more than 200,000 signatures calling for the judge to be removed from the bench. some saying this is a case of class privilege. >> getting good grades or swimming fast is a basis of giving you exception of california minimum penalties, you're saying it's open season on college women. >> reporter: some point to the

athlete himself. and a statement made by turner's father, asking for leniency, saying that his life will never be the one that he dreamed about. that's a steep price to pay for 20 months of action ut of 20-plus years of life. turner's father apologizing for his choice of word. while the victim has written a 12-page letter to turner which has gone viral. you took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice, until today. turner will now have to register as a sex offender. he's already started serving his sentence. he could be out as early as the beginning of the fall semester. back to you. >> we're getting to your local forecasco
