became the first ever to seize the nomination of a major political party. >> chuck, perhaps not surprising, bernie sanders didn't give her moment last night. he didn't urge his supporters to get behind her. there's this meeting at the white house tomorrow. i guess we'd all like to be a fly on the wall if that room, what's going to happen and what will happen right after that meeting. >> i don't know if it is going to happen right after, but i think there is a feeling in the democratic party to give bernie sanders a little bit of space, give him a little bit of respect. there is one more week of the primary season and i've talked to folks close to both the white house and clinton that there is a feeling, look, if sanders really wants to go through to the d.c. primary, give him the week. no sweat off of their back. but i think what he's going to learn is that if he carries this on too long, then there will be some public urgings. and then maybe you won't get that committee spot you really want in the senate. there is -- they do have one piece leverage over him. he likes being a senator. so the senate democrats can force his

out, he does this lengthy statement, says he's not going to talk about it anymore. in the speech, he doesn't talk about it. but he taped an interview with sean hannity where he talked about it. >> i want to show you the front page of "the new york daily news." with a headline that says "i'm with racist." it's a chastising headline for paul ryan, the speaker of the house, after all of the controversial things that donald trump has said. is this going to be a tough headline for a lot of republicans? >> it already is. and i think that paul ryan is unfairly being held to a harsher standard than other republicans. lots of republicans have endorsed donald trump. >> but he's seen as the face of the republican party. >> he's seen as the future of the republican party. and i think he's paying a higher price than anybody. mitch mcconnell endorsed him before paul ryan did.

hit-and-run crash in michigan. five bicyclists are dead, and several other hospitalized after a pickup truck slammed into the group without warning. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning. police say the 50-year-old driver is in custody but has not been charged yet. authorities say they got several calls reporting th pickup truck driving erratically just minutes before the deadly crash. it was chaos. >> multiple bikers down. >> reporter: confusion. cyclist run off the road. and this morning, investigators in michigan are trying to piece together to what led to the deadly crash near kalamazoo. >> i've never seen anything like this in my life. >> reporter: one says the blue pickup truck swerved into the group. >> a couple of them flew. >> reporter: nine cycle iflt hit. five killed. four rushed to the hospital. police say

pickup driving erratically. >> the police were alerted to a blue pickup truck in the approximately 30 minutes leading up to this accident. >> reporter: after the crash, the driver fled on foot. the neighbor said she thought the truck hit a frtree. >> the front of the truck is demolished. i thought it was pieces of the truck. >> reporter: overnight, the county prosecutor said this area is once again in shock. in february, six people were killed when an uber driver went on a shooting spree in kalamazoo. now, more heartbreak. >> i wish we had more of an opportunity to maybe get our feet under us before we had to do it again. >> reporter: this morning, the cycling community is mourning the loss of these riders. they were thought to bepa

the four survivors who sustained serious injuries. and, matt and savannah, the people who were hurt, their identities have not been released. >> gabe gutierrez. thank you very much. breaking news overnight, officials say a bomb threat forced an egypt airplane, flying from cairo to beijing, make an emergency landing in uzbekistan. they called to say a bomb was onboard that flight. the agents ordered the plane to land at the nearest airport. all 135 passengers were evacuated. the aircraft was searched, no bomb was found. that incident comes three weeks after an egyptair flight crashed in the maid traediterranean sea. two f-16 fighter jets crashed after a midair collision in georgia. the fighter jets were performing routine night flying operations. the pilots of each aircraft ejected safely. e

the u.s. air force is investigating that crash. back to the chilling surveillance video we showed you at the top of the show. an attempted kidnapping caught on tape. this stopped at a dollar store in florida. you see the suspect where the 13-year-old and mother are shopping. a man grabs the girl and tries to drag her out of the store. there's a tug-of-war, between the suspect and the mother, who is a complete stranger. there was an off-duty sheriff's deputy in the parking lot. he took the suspect into custody. now, 30-year-old craig benello is charged with attempted kidnapping. >> what would possess someone to do that with the mother of the child right there. >> and the off-duty sheriff's deputy. fists were flying in the game between the royals and the orioles in baltimore. this came in the second

assaulting a woman. gadi schwartz is outside with this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. this is where brock turner has started to serve his six-month sentence. but the prosecuting attorney on this case says he could be walking out of jail in 90 days. it's an online and public shaming. social media sites with hundreds of thousands of posts, calling out star swimmer and once olympic hopeful, brock turner, with sexual assault. his picture from facebook, only to have the tech giant allow the posts. while hundreds of thousands share his letter from his victim. a victim read in court, after turner was handed a six-month sentence. >> this letter is a game-changer. it's one of the most important letters of our generation. >> reporter: the letter saying, i want to show people that one night of drinking can ruin two lives. you and me. you are the cause. i amhe

message to the prosecutor on her assault case saying, she wants to remain anonymous. >> i don't need labels, categories, to prove that i should be listened to. i'm coming to you simply as a woman, wanting to be heard. >> reporter: the letter saying, if you think i was spared, came out unscathed, that today i ride off into the sunset while you suffer the greatest blow, you are mistaken. nobody wins. we have all been devastated. siting the defendant's age and lack of criminal record, the judge wrote of his decision. a prison sentence will have a severe impact on him. i don't think he will be a danger to others. when you heard the six months, what was your reaction? >> i was upset. absolutely. i definitely thought it was a slap on the wrist. >> reporter: it's triggered a petition to remove the judge from the bench, with over 500,000 signatures. >> we believe that women

the full protection of the law. and we want to put someone in that seat that understands violence against women and who is going to protect our daughters in college. >> reporter: an officer of the court told nbc news they have received several threats against the judge and his family. turner will have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. his lawyer is now filing an appeal. matt and savannah, back to you. >> gadi schwartz, thanks to you. ari, good morning to you. let's lay the facts out here. the probation department recommended six months. the prosecutor wanted six years. there was a maximum potential sentence of 14 years. is this an unusually lenient sentence by the judge. >> it is very lenient, shockingly so, when you look at three sex crime felonies. >> against an unconscious woman. let's talk about what the judge has

less moral culpability. and said that a long sentence would have a severe impact on him. it sounds like the judge is being more sensitive to the person who committed the crime than the victim of the crime. >> several of the comments attributed to the judge do suggest that. that's what people are finding so outrageous. there is a thing called mitigating factors in the law. people hear about that. that goes to the assessment. and it is true that the convict, the defendant in this case, didn't have a prior record. but when you go above and beyond the things you can prove and that are measurable and go into saying, it would affect this person's life, yes. that's what a felony punishment is supposed to do. >> now, there's an effort to recall him. he's up for election but running unopposed. is that likely to be successful? >> under the rules, it's a high

signatures and organizing. not online, where this is happening now. but through the process. we should be concerned with decisions we disagree with, for recalling judges, based one at a time. people are going to have something they disagree with. >> and you have some saying this judge went to stanford. got a bachelors there. and captain of the lacrosse team. and they're saying it was impossible for him to be unbiased in this case. is it different accusing a judge of being biased because of his academic pedigree than what we're seeing in the political world with donald trump, accusing a judge of being biased because of his ethnic heritage? >> we're hearing a lot of different ideas of what bias can constitute. i don't know what was in this judge's mind. statistically, we know that poor, black defendants are more likely to go to jail and be sentenced more harshly for the same crime than affluent defendants.

travelers waiting in line, type in how long their waiting. you know how long you're going to wait. i'm at newark airport, one of the busiest in the country. i have the app up. in this terminal, two different tsa checkpoints. one of them is a 25-minute wait. as i stroll over, look at the other checkpoint. zero minutes. i just saved time. off i go. and look. this is incredible right now. no lines whatsoever. i'm just pressuring right through. this is awesome. and i'm through. just like that. this next app, fleet, goes further. not only will it tell you how busy the lines are. once you're through, it will act like your personal concierge. this one is easy. i typed in my flight information. it's telling me my gate. if the airline switches the gate, it pops up on the screen. this is the cool part. see the little purses? it tells you the nearest

shopping. i'm a food guy. no problem. there's a little sandwich. you hit that. i'm in the mood for frozen yogu yogurt. there's a pinkberry on my way to gate nine. it's telling me on the screen, there's a 25-minute flight delay. if you come down here, it tells me i need to be at the gate in 1:07. i know exactly when to leave. that leaves the mytsa app. must be the most accurate. the tsa runs it. the tsa app is saying that the wait time here is zero minutes. but take a look behind me. this look like zero minutes to you? no wonder the information was wrong. the last time updated, 12:18 p.m. it's 3:30 p.m. the information is three hours old. the minutes tick by. still waiting. and keep on ticking.
