they will never get to experience their senior years, three montgomery county high schoolers died in a crash in damascus this morning. news 4's kristin wright is live at clarksburg high school where graduation is happening today. kristin. >> reporter: well, a moment of silence was held at the very start of the ceremony to remember these three boys who were with us this time yesterday and now they're gone. clarksburg high school class of 2016 starts a new chapter as the lives of three friends comes to a sudden end. evidence of the violent crash still visible on burnt hill road in damascus. >> so young. they're not even seniors yet. >> reporter: the pickup truck was left mangled and twisted. police say 17-year-old jacob dennis was driving and somehow slammed into a tree near kingsstead road at 11:30 last night. jacob and his friend's cari green, 17, and patrick 18, were killed. >> they had so much life ahead

of them. and so many opportunities, but just things happen so fast. can never take life for granted or anything. >> reporter: but graduation must go on with hearts heavy. >> my boyfriend speaks so good about jacob dennis and so many people talking about how inspirational patrick was and cari has als been a warmhearted person. >> weird how life ends so fast. >> reporter: as we heard from cari green's mother a short time ago, she tells us he was just a very sweet child who had plans to go to towson university. and students we talked to today were quick to point out this isn't their first tragic loss of the school year. they lost a friend back in september who was hit by a train. so this is just been a very, very tough year for them. police meanwhile are still investigating what exactly happened on that windy road in damascus last night. back to you guys. live desk with breaking news, sheriff deputy shoots and kills a man in culpepper county. we understand this happened last night when authorities were called to a domestic violence scene in norman. authorities say a woman's estranged husband was coming after her with a gun when she ran to her neighbor's house for help. according to authorities the suspect who's now dead, 49-year-old willis walker jr., stormed that house and shot a 74-year-old man inside. somebody called 911. when deputies arrived walker jr. turned the gun on them and one of the deputies shot and killed him. virginia state police are now investigating this incident. back to you. ncht right now 18-year-old joshua sumter is in police kus deafter an all-night manhunt. he's accused of shooting a stafford county sheriff's deputy four times. news 4's derrick ward is in stafford where we're learning more about the shooting and the deputy's condition. derrick, good morning. >> reporter: well, indeed, that deputy is in the hospital now.

multiple gunshot wounds, but he is going to need surgery. and as you see behind me it's still a crime scene here as this is investigated. it started around 11:00 p.m. with a call to police about someone breaking into a house in the 100 block of windsor ridge court in stafford county. the call came from someone inside the house allegedly being broken into and deputies from the stafford county sheriff's department responded. >> deputies responded to the call. and when that response occurred, shots were fired, multiple shotted were fires. >> reporter: one of those deputies was hit in the thigh, arm and upper chest. he survived. >> the body armor protected his upper chest and saved his life. >> reporter: police say the suspect 19-year-old joshua sumter ran after the shooting and tells news 4 the suspect was spotted at this minimart near the scene. by

closed in on the suspect here at the jefferson place townhouse community about a mile away from the crime scene. >> he was arrested without injury to himself or without incident. >> reporter: but with the charge of attempted capital murder, more charges could be coming. now, police say that the person inside the house or the persons inside the house and the suspect were not strangers to each other. they knew each other, but they're still trying to get to the bottom of why this all occurred and how it turned so violent. we're live in stafford county, derrick ward, news 4, back to you. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist chuck bell keeping an eye on a very blustery day outside. current winds are gusting to near 40 miles per hour across much of the area. the trees outside here in northwest are really swaying back and forth. a severe thunderstorm warning now for this cell, this part of the line anyway that's going right through the inner harbor of baltimore now. and special marine warnings along the tidal potomac and

just a serious blast of wind. rain showers are now mixing down the high speed winds from aloft, so winds could easily gust to near 60 miles per hour as this ribbon of rain showers goes on through. down to our south and west from about manassas southwestward to the shenandoah no rain at all for today. current temperatures 73 washington, but look how much cooler it is 61 in frederick, maryland, behind that rain shower. we'll talk temperatures and how cold it will be tonight coming up in a few minutes. chuck, thank you. maryland's natural resources police have identified the body of a man pulled from the potomac river near great falls last night. identified as 62-year-old lawrence gray jr. they say he is the second victim in a boating accident. this marks the fifth boating death of the year. today, a jury could reach a verdict in a rape case in d.c.'s capitol hill neighborhood. 21-year-old antwon pitt is accused of sexually assaulting a young mother inside her southeast d.c. home last

two weeks before the attack. police say pitt had cut off his gps ank tle monitor. closing arguments may happen as soon as today in a case against a virginia lawyer. andrew schmuhl is accused of tasering, shooting and stabbing a couple in 2014 after his wife was fired by one of the victims. the defense wants to prove that he was impaired by multiple medications at the time of the attack. he and his wife also charged and will have a separate trial. metro's safetrack program continues today. the transit agency released this video showing repairs to the orange and silver lines this week. trains are single tracking between east falls church and ballston. orange line trains operating every 18 minutes instead of every six minutes. surge one will last until next thursday. now, because of that work more of you are driving and we're really seeing the effect on traffic. a lot of you told us this morning's commute was the worst

ahead of the general election. >> we can't solve our problems by counting on the politicians who created our problems. the clintons have turned the politics of personal enrichment into an artform for themselves. >> trump is also maintaining his stance this morning about the judge overseeing a lawsuit against trump university. in a statement yesterday trump defended his concern but said his attacks against the judge were misconstrued. politicians on both sides of the aisle have been outspoken against trump's earlier suggestion that the judge's mexican heritage could prevent him from doing his job fairly. next, trump will hold a campaign rally in richmond set for friday night and open to the public. we'll fill you in on other details as we get them. a major developing story in michigan at this hour. a man could face charges after five cyclists died in a crash. nbc's gabe gutierrez tells us more about the intense moments. >> reporter: it was chaos.

>> reporter: confusion, cyclists run off the road. and this morning investigators in western michigan are trying to piece together what led to the deadly crash near kalamazoo. >> i've never seen anything like this in my life. >> reporter: one witness says this blue pickup truck swerved into the group before he could warn them. >> that's when i seen a bunch of bikes hit the front of his truck and a couple of them flew. >> reporter: nine cyclists hit, five killed. the other four were rushed to the hospital. police say the pickup truck was reported driving erratically. after the crash police say the driver fled on foot but was later arrested. a neighbor says she first thought the truck had hit a tree. >> the front of the truck is completely demolished, so i figured pieces of the truck, see them picking up pieces of the bike and i'm like oh my god. >> reporter: police say the 50-year-old driver is in custody but not yet charged. the four survivors sustained serious injuries and at least two of them are in critical condition. gabe gutierrez, nbc news, cooper

police are looking for a man who grabbed a teenage girl as she walked to school tuesday morning. this happened on silver brook road around 7:45 a.m. the 16-year-old girl says she was walking along the sidewalk when a man grabbed her around the waist, she screamed, the man ran away and she immediately told a school resource officer what happened. police are working with the victim now to get a more detailed description of the suspect. the family of melvin patz says he can now rest in peace after his killer was convicted on tuesday. germane hails found guilty of murting patz during a drug deal in 20 10, pate was identified by blinking at a photo of him. he later died and prosecutors had to fight to get the blinking evidence admitted. a judge ruled in their favor and hails now face life plus 20 years in prison. and an undercover sting leads police to an auto shop dealing with a lot more than parts. d.c. police say discount

sounds and security was dealing with stolen goods. they arrested 39-year-old tom van wen. he faces a list of charges including distribution of heroin and felony trafficking of stolen property. you might spend more money the next time you dine out in fairfax county. that's if a meal tax referendum is approved in november. yesterday the board of supervisors voted to put that 4% tax proposal on the ballot. the tax would apply to prepared foods at restaurants and grocery stores. county estimates it would bring in almost $100 million in revenue in the first year. minimum wage workers in the district are getting a raise. the plan to increase pay to $15 an hour by 2020 will now go to mayor bowser's desk. the d.c. council approved the raise yesterday. current minimum wage is $10.50. a response to terror, what the french government is making available to residents today in response to those terror attacks in paris. and an amazing turnout. where people are waiting this morning for a chance b

breaking news, antwon pitt has been found guilty. just minutes ago we found out a jury found him guilty of sexual assault. this is a story we brought you about this man attacking a young mom inside her southeast d.c. home last october. according to court documents he told her, quote, stop fighting or i'll kill you.

facial fractures, bruising all over her body. pitt had been arrested and charged with felony just weeks before that attack police say he cut off his gps ankle monitor. at the live desk, erika gonzalez. thank you, erika. tickets for friday's memorial service for muhammad ali are sold out now, that according to a tweet from the kfc yum! center where it will take place. people stood in line to get those tickets. former president bill clinton and several others will deliver eulogies on friday. you can watch muhammad ali's memorial service live right here on nbc 4. right now the wind is picking up, but it's kind of hard to complain. >> that's because the weather is beautiful out there. chuck, how did we get so lucky today? >> a little break from the heat and humidity as summertime has rolled in here. it is coming with some ferociously gusty winds out there. winds are gusting well over 40 miles per hour in some spots. so hold onto your hats here for the next little bit. these winds will settle down a

but it's standing to remain quite blustery and breezy. so what to expect then for today? you're looking northeast from our city camera there and you can see in the far distance the darkening sky. there are some rain showers drifting into the inner harbor and baltimore. no rain inside the beltway, but i'll show you radar in just a second. cooler air moving in fast. we'll be back down into the 40s and 50s by early tomorrow morning. and there are some rain showers now, but after we get past noon or 1:00, rain chances will drop precipitously. temperature wise generally holding low to mid 70s in the metro area for this afternoon. a lot of clouds now, but we'll see more and more in the way of sunshine as the afternoon goes along. here's radar now, powerhouse thunderstorms up near metro philadelphia. those will miss us to the north, but a trailing edge of rain coming right through northeast washington, northern parts route 50 from buoy out towards the chesapeake bay bridge. quick shot of rain, it's already drying out northern

county out to the blue ridge and shenandoah valley. future weather carries little chance for rain quickly, quickly out of here. winds along with that storm up there in northern baltimore county could be gusting up to near 60 miles per hour. but again, once we get past about 1:00 today the sun will return. and temperatures will recover. we're rain cooled now 61 in frederick, maryland. but 74 in fredericksburg, 75 in st. mary's county and 64 out in winchester, virginia. so planning out your afternoon what is a cloudy sky now will become mostly sunny and breezy. i think most of our stray shower chances now are going to be over with us before we get towards 3:00 or 4:00. temperatures holding in the 70s for today with the return to the sunshine. and next four days look really nice. very windy and breezy today, and a little on the breezy side tomorrow as well, but nice low humidity the next couple of days. little chance for rain on saturday. we'll talk more about that and give you the rest of the weekend forecast in a few minutes. some breaking news in the sports world. is

suspended for two years for doping. the ruling just announced by the international tennis federation. sha sharapova says she was taking the substance for years before it was banned in january. she has already announced she will appeal. sharapova is the world's highest paid female athlete and won five championships. back to you. all right. erika, thank you. facebook at work, we know you do it, and you can actually argue it boosts your creativity. a team of researchers just published a paper that argues that people, some people, use social media at work as a sort of self-therapy. the benefits especially apply to younger people who ended up in jobs that weren't quite right for them. as you may have guessed you can take this a little too far. researchers say too much facebook scrolling can actually make people unproductive. >> i imagine so. >> you're spending so much time on the computer, phone, whatever not doing the work. >> yeah, takes me so long to try to write something on there.

people about a disaster. they created an app that will send warnings on smartphones to smartphone users in the event of a bombing, shooting or other disaster. it was developed after last year's attacks in paris and is being released today. the nfl is working with investigators to find out who hacked its twitter account. somebody claimed that commissioner roger goodell had died. the nfl quickly deleted that tweet and set the record straight. but as nbc's miguel almaguer reports, this is just the latest incident in a string of high profile hackings. >> reporter: the tweet came from the nfl's authenticated account, we regret to inform our fans that our commissioner, roger goodell, has passed away. he was 57. r-i-p. the message shocked the league's 19 million followers. the nfl sent scrambling to delete the bogus tweet. a league spokesman on twitter saying goodell is alive and well. >> we've had 39 of those rule changes -- >> reporter: the commissioner and the league the target of a hack. nd

weighed in, man, you leave the office for one day of golf and the own network kills you off. harsh. miguel almaguer, nbc news, los angeles. ever wish you had a magnifyimagnify ing glass at the grocery store to find the calories on a can or added sugar in the cereal. help is apparently on the way. here to tell us where, when and why of the new labeling is a registered dietitian and nutrition expert. thanks for coming. >> thanks for having me. >> so what's this all about? why are they changing? >> yeah, so just recently announced the nutrition facts panel is getting a facelift, which is good news for consumers because after 20 years they're updating the look and the information being provided. >> one of the big changes that people talk about is the way the sugar will be listed on their label. tell us about that. >> so right now it's somewhat of a guessing game for consumers when you look at a nutrition facts panel, you will notice you can't really figure out how much added sugar is in the product

differentiate between what's naturally occurring and added. so with this new nutrition facts panel you'll actually know the number of grams of added sugar as well as how that contributes to your daily value. >> i understand they're also increasing we can see there the size of the calorie box. is that what most people are actually looking for? >> yes, we actually know that about 75% of consumers actually do look at the nutrition facts panel. but calories are significant. and this really can help make consumers make informed choices particularly when it comes to reducing their(r risk of being overweight or obese. >> you think that's the main reason people look at that box if they're dieting? >> well, i do think that does play a role depending on the type of diet, but as a registered dietitian i would say look at the total nutrition facts panel, make sure it's calorically balanced with essential nutrients. >> now, i understand serving size is changing too. tell us about that. >> yes. so basically what they're doing is they're updating the s

consume today. >> we eat a lot more now than we did say ten, twenty years ago. >> yeah, this has been since the early '90s, and by law we have to put in the serving size what we actually consume now. so they're actually going to be increasing as well. >> because i know often look at a cereal box it's like a quarter cup or half cup. >> if you measure out your bowl is pretty empty, right? that's going to get a little bit of a boost as well to really reflect what we consume. >> and calories of course will rise. >> yes. >> so what about organic? is that going to be on the label? >> that would be different than the nutrition facts panel, and there's regulations that actually address organic as well. >> but we know vitamin d and potassium will be listed. >> that's new. calcium, vitamin d, potassium and iron, why they're adding those specific nutrients is because many of us don't consume enough of them. >> so do you think the

products will then decide to add those things now that we're going to know whether they're in there or not? >> that's a good point and that could be the case. they can voluntarily list other nutrients, but those four are required. >> so when will we see these changes? >> well, actually the companies don't have to follow these regulations or they're not put in place for two years, but i suspect you'll start to see them rolling out over the next year or two. >> i see you've got eggs here. >> yeah. >> eggs have a nutrition label on them too? >> yes, they do, right here on the back. rule of thumb is any kind of packaged food is going to have a nutrition facts panel or existing facts panel. >> but what's in the egg is not going to change per manufacturer, chicken, right? >> true, but they again will be required to update based on these new labels. again, the new nutrients will be enclosed. >> so we can get ready for this to start happening any time now. >> yes. you'll start to see these rolling out very soon. >> they don't have to have

performer. they met, they've been together for 20 years. they've had this club for 15. and george has a son who is 24 who is getting married, who is bringing the family to meet his family for the first time. and the daughter's family is a very conservative right wing politician in the south of fran france. and so the problem is trying to introduce him to his family which is not going to be very -- um, very accepting of the life that we have and the life we've created. and so hilarity ensues. >> partly your character. >> i'm the mother. and because it's a drag club in the south of france and i'm the performer and i have been his surrogate mother forever. and so the

that he believes he should be the mother. >> but also sort of contributes to some of the fun in this production. >> absolutely. >> you talked about the costumes and singing and the bigness of it all, right? >> it's such an intimate space too. >> and the wonderful thing about signature, which i've never been to before, it's kind of a little jewel box. and it's a beautiful production. the set is gorgeous. and the costumes, i think it's probably the largest show that signature has attempted in their history. >> 200 costumes, wigs. >> makeup changes, dancing and it's incredible. >> now, i'm going to see this saturday night, really hard to get tickets for this. >> very difficult. >> why do you think this is resonated so much with so many people for so many years this show. and even here again in arlington. >> i mean, besides the entertainment value it's really a family story of the two parents and the child. and it's reall

we had to come a little predictab predictable, but i said not with this show. so we worked so hard to reinvent ourselves and we're very proud of that. it's been breaking records of sales and attendance, but more important it touches the heart of people. >> so i understand that you transport the audience inside a fantasy world. tell us about that. >> well, it's the first time we really go specifically into an era. it's the second half of the 19th century where a lot of inventions were coming, a bit like what we were doing with internet right now. so there's a lot of contraption like you see, taking a walk on the stage, and he's driving a punk like airplane at one point. every seen is curiosity, something invented, very new, very surprising. so we wanted to make very optimistic show because i think people need that right now, they need to be entertained in a very noble way.

>> yeah, it's -- >> 19th century costumes. >> yes, yes. this is like fitted creation from france and very refined costume designer. so there's a lot of inventions. every designer put himself or herself into that show, as i said earlier, it was more than a show, it was a mission. let's reinvent, let's bring joy to people. and you see people are very emotional about this show because they feel like it's for them. we have a lot of characters that are not creatures, they're people you can relate to. >> they tell a story? >> yeah, yeah. >> tell us a story. >> the story is, oh, my god, i don't have much time to say it, but it's about a character that we named the seeker invented a machine he wants to travel into another dimension, but the machine has a misfunction. and he has people from another dimension coming to his world bringing poetry. and reinventing his world. so that's what we want to do with people's lives.

characters that have hats and suitcases, canes and stuff, but what they do with those things are very surprising. >> yes, that's what i heard. >> so where can people see the show? >> well, we're at tysons, we're really excited because it's a booming place and this show is about innovation. so we're happy to be there. we're there from july 21st, and i can see now we just announced extension because the sales are going very well, so we'll be in washington until september 18th. but that's short. so come and see us now. it's for the families from age 5 people really enjoy the kids like that. i used to be a kid a bit with attention deficit disorder. i thought of the kids i wanted to do a show that is really captivating in every second. >> sounds like you did it. thank you so much. >> thank you very much,
