a man was shot multiple times on montgomery street. pierre clark, he died at the hospital. the lockdown has been lifted. this is alexandria's third homicide of the year. chopper 4 over the arrest scene of a suspect in annandale after a deadly shooting. one man is dead and a woman critically injured after shooting at a home near a fairfax hospital. the suspect surrendered and was taken from the home. julie carey was the first on the scene and joins us live. >> reporter: the home where the shooting took place is midway down the block. that is beverley drive. still a lot of police on the scene right now investigating what happened inside that house this afternoon. now residents in this quiet annae

hospital very rattled by the incident this afternoon. they were told by police to stay inside their homes until that possible suspect was taken into custody. now, when police responded to the 911 call this afternoon, they found a man shot to death in the backyard of the home. then once they entered the home, they found the female victim. she, too, had been shot. she was transported to the hospital where she is in critical condition. the s.w.a.t. team moved in, the armored vehicle moved in, many first responders. the s.w.a.t. team went inside that house, but there was no violent confrontation at that time. we are told that the alleged suspect surrendered peacefully. one of the most frightening things about this, there were children inside that house, several children. they fortunately, though, are all safe. we t

downhill on burnt hill road through sharp curves. the truck didn't hold the last turn, left the road, hit trees, smashing head on into one of them. police say 17-year-old jacob dennis was driving his 1989 ford truck. >> there are no indications of alcohol on the scene. we have a young inexperienced driver driving too fast and lost control. three kids are now dead. >> reporter: the driver and one passenger 18-year-old patrick died on the scene. the second passenger 17-year-old carey green was transported to the hospital where he died. all three were juniors at clarksburg high school. today the school was closed. >> it's devastating news.

downsizing. half the staff is being laid out. meanwhile donald trump is trying to raise money as he looks forward to a general election battle with hillary clnton. the republican will be in richmond, virginia, on friday for a vip reception and fundraiser. that comes as trump tries to convince republicans that he can stay away from controversy. last night in a noticeably muted speech, trump said he would make people proud of the party. next week he is expected to give a speech outlining his case against hillary clinton. we're following a developing story in culpeper where a community is in shock. the sheriff says a man beat his wife, killed his neighbor, and might have kept on going if a deputy's bullet hadn't stopped him. >> reporter: the house just over my shoulder, this is where the sheriff says it all started just before 9:00a

having some sort of domestic dispu dispute. the husband grabbed a shotgun and chased his wife out of the home. she was running toward the neighbor's house. the house fired a shot. she gets into a neighbor's house. they keep her safe. they lock the door. that is until her estranged husband followed her up to that home, opening fire just to get through that door. once he got through, it turned deadly. >> the subject found the estranged wife in the home and began to violently assault her. >> reporter: just as deputies pulled up, the suspect came out onto the deck still holding that shotgun. an exchange between the deputies and the subject pursued and then another gunshot, killing the suspect. in culpeper, virginia, i'm david culver.

for the first time, we're seeing the video that shows a prince george's county man blinking, the only way he could identify the shooter who left him paralyzed and unable to speak. his name is melvin pate. he died two years after this video was taken. but before he died, pate identified the man who shot him. yesterday a jury found jermaine hales guilty of murder. he's going to be sentenced in august. he is facing life in prison plus 20 years. the victim's mother talks about her long road to justice. montgomery county schools will be reviewing its policies covering the conduct of students at prom and other school activitie activities. the action comes after six students were

graduation ceremony only to have that action reversed. the students were accused of being drunk at program. the principal followed through to ban anybody that did that, but the superintendent reversed that decision and today the students turned their tassels at constitution hall. this afternoon we're keeping a close eye on the ride home as commuters struggle through day three of metro's maintenance program. now metro is releasing some new numbers about safetrack. officials say this morning ridership was down about 20% west of boston. the west falls church station, ridership has dropped a whopping 46%. the first phase of the maintenance plan ends next thursday. expect reduced service on the orange and silver lines and a severe impact west of boston. here's one reason to keep you home on dry land.

wild crash in maryland. a jeep smashed into the living room of a first floor apartment. pat collins joins us on west diamond avenue. >> reporter: it was something to see. i want to start by showing you a picture of the jeep inside the apartment. the jeep way, way, way inside the apartment. how it got there, well, that begins up here. you see, behind me is muddy branch road. the jeep was making a turn, lost control, jumped the curb, went over all of this brush, over the grass, over the drainage pipe, went through a barbecue grill, went through a brick supporting column, through the patio doors, and then into the living room of the apartment. now, there was a woman and a child inside. they weren't hurt. let's h

montgomery county fire department. what about the driver of the jeep? >> yeah. no injuries of course. she was an adult female, young adult. she was evaluated by the ems personnel and she was not injured. was not transported to the hospital. again, there were occupants in the apartment of origin. they were helped out by fire rescue crews too and they were unscathed through it all as well. >> reporter: there was a woman who was upstairs who was asleep when this happened. she heard the boom. she saw the smoke. she's the one who called 911. and we're going to hear from her coming up at 5:00. back to you. a florida couple is lucky to be alive after tropical storm colin hit and began sinking their 40-foot sailboat while they were still aboard. the couple's boat hit a sandbar. they planned to sleep through the night and leave at high

tide. around 3:00 in the morning, they got a rude awakening when the boat began to tip. the couple eventually had to be rescued by the coast guard. they're just happy to have survived. >> the wind was so strong. it wasn't let us go. we headed this direction. that's when we got stuck. >> the owners say they're pretty handy. rather than call a salvage company, they're going to try to pump the boat out themselves, fix it, and get back to sailing. >> i love that can-do attitude. we don't have to call the company. we can do it ourselves. >> i don't know exactly if i would do that. >> they did not see the forecast out there. if they were in a boat and a tropical storm is moving on in, even here in this area -- yesterday, boating one of the biggest possibilities for fatalities on the water, especially out toward the chesapeake bay. always make sure you

be sure they're up to date every ten years. >> do my kids particularly if they're going off to a sports camp, do they need to see their physician before they head off to camp? if so, what do i need to let my doctor know of? >> the main thing we worry about kids with sports camp is if they're going to get a concussion. have them get a concussion test as a baseline before they head off to camp. get that test done so you can understand how quickly their brain moves. >> that is even if my child has never had a concussion. you want something done beforehand. >> particularly for football, soccer, and think about diving. >> what about our kids that may be need an inhaler

allergies and an epipen? >> those all need to go. the epinephrine, make sure you know who has got it and don't let it cook. don't just stick it in the backpack and the lunch bag. for asthma, those are rescue inhalers that should go. give it to the counsellors. an adult will be there to tell you if your child is using a rescue medication every day. then you can get back to the doctor and get them on a better one. >> it's knowing where a back up plan is, if need be. what about what happens when the kids come home and the vacation is over for the parents and they're coming home with more than the arts and crafts? >> what happens when they come home with the bad stuff? sometimes they'll bring home things like lice

get out that fine-tooth comb. treat it right away. the next one would be poison ivy. >> that's so common. >> look through their skin. if they have the rash, don't worry about it. they're not contagious, but the clothes are contagious. lastly would be athletes foot. the problem with that one is it is so hard to fix. once you have that dry, cracked itchy foot, make sure you're not sharing the nail clippers amongst the family. then my version is throw out the flip-flops and sneakers. it is the easiest way to get rid of it. if you try the creams and powders over the counter and they don't work, get a prescription medication that is taken orally. >> there are probably lines

patrick, and cary green. they were killed in a crash before their clarksburg high school classmates were set to graduate. a jeep went right off the road and into somebody's living room. thankfully nobody inside there was hurt. we're entering a new phase in the race for the white house. the big question is whether deeply divided democrats will unite around presumptive nominee hillary clinton. president obama is stepping in to try to ensure the answer is yes. >> barack obama knows democrats can come together. they did as won the white house after the tough obama/clinton primary battles of 2008. now she is the winner in need of party unity. the day after hillary clinton's historic triumph bernie sanders looked beaten, heading home to verm

about that incident with donald trump because they're saying that even the speaker of the house has denounced and called these comments racist. there are republican leadership folks who have said similar things. one person tells me you can't condemn something someone says and then offer support in the same sentence. they're reacting to the trump campaign comments that he's going to tone down comments on the judge among other things. they say they've heard these kinds of comments before. and we're talking about many incidents throughout trump's campaign. he's attacked race and gender in the past. they don't believe there is such a thing as a toned down trump in their point. >> he was subdued and very gracious last night. the department of education just put out a new report that shows block students are nearly four times more likely to be suspended from school than

what do you listeners think about that? >> they were really upset about that. these were sobering numbers that were compiled by the department of education civil rights and information. these are the numbers from the 2014/2015 school year. black preschools almost 4% more likely to be expelled than white students. 1/3 of high schools with black or latino enrollment offered calcul calculus. there are some other numbers on that are very stark and interesting. this kind of expose the issues that create the school to prison pipeline. it's important to know that the success and failure of these students has an impact on all of us across communities. a study by ucla was saying that it costs america $35 billion a year in taxpayer revenue because

suspended tend not to finish their education. they find themselves in legal issues. it just builds and so on and so on. it's a bad situation that definitely needs to be put in check. >> preschool is when you're teaching very young children how to control their impulses. >> right and their core way of learning. >> we have done a lot of stories on domestic violence. starting tomorrow, victims and their children are going to have a new place to go. what do the people in the community say about this? >> they're really happy about this because there has been a spike. we're talking about prince george's county and a new family justice center there. there have been quite a few situations of domestic violence in prince george's county. earlier this year there was eight deaths in eight days. this new family center is going to bring 19 service providers under one roof. they're going to serve abused victi

could make the capitol friendlier to new moms. >> the bill recommends adding more changing tables in bathrooms and designated parking spots for pregnant women. a recent investigation by scott macfarlane revealed the u.s. capitol complex is short on both. >> we found the u.s. capitol doesn't even meet the federal government's own standards for accommodations for new moms. our review of records found less than half the family restrooms and lactation spaces required in new federal buildings for moms and no designated parking for expectant moms. congress is exempt from its own standards we found. a u.s. senator recommended his colleagues consider upgrades. >> whether they're working here in the capitol or they're visiting, the capitol should provide those facilities. your report allowed us to have an opportunity to write to the rules committee to demand

killed tuesday. the five were killed when a pickup truck slammed into their cycling group tuesday even, which some witnesses say they saw coming, just not quick enough. >> before i could say watch out to the bikers, it happened. >> reporter: in fact a half hour before it happened, others had complained about the driver's erratic driving. >> the police were alerted to a blue pickup truck in the approximately 30 minutes leading up to this accident. >> reporter: after it happened, five bicyclists were dead, and four others injured in a collision described as horrific. >> we seen them picking up pieces of the bike. i was like, oh, my god. >> reporter: the prosecutor is trying to figure out what charges to file against the driver who first fled the scene only to be captured a short while later. >> we will not make any information about his identity known until we've hadn
