white house. >> president obama officially threw his support behind his former secretary of state, hillary clinton. but the timing of that announcement is raising some eyebrows coming about an hour after bernie sanders met with the president at the white house. >> and sanders made it clear after that meeting he intends to stay in the race through next tuesday's primary here in d.c. steve handelsman live at the white house with the latest. >> reporter: aides here at the white house says president obama taped his formal endorsement video on tuesday and released it today after what they described as a productive meeting between the president and hillary clinton's fierce primary rival. barack obama and bernie sanders walked close together, but aides say the president gave the senator room to ease out of the primary battle he lost to hillary clinton. but soon after, mr. obama moved quickly, endorsing hillary clinton in a video. >> in fact, i don't think there's ever

to make sure his issues, his movement, gets proper hearing at the convention. whether it will matter to her campaign or not, you know that biden, president obama, when he talks to hillary clinton, they're all going to say, bernie, thanks a lot. we're going to listen to you on your issues. you're going to get to speak on your issues, and he's going to be happy to hear that. a fairfax county elementary school is revising its recess supervision policy after a kindergarten wandered away from the school this week. the child made it more than a mile before a good samaritan called 911. >> reporter: well, this little boy's parents sounded the alarm about what happened this week at london town elementary because they fear it could happen and he wanted school wide notification of the incident. it was late tuesday morning when this 6-year-old boy got

but when he got back to his classroom, the other kids had gone for recess. the little boy went out the back door and started walking down busy stone road. it made a little over a mile before a good samaritan spotted him and called 911. police picked him up and took him home. that's when the school released he was missing. the father didn't get the response he wanted from school administrators. >> worst case, we wouldn't have christian here today. that's part of the reason i wanted to meet with you is to make sure the community is aware, to heighten the level of vigilance against this sort of thing happening again. >> reporter: now, when we talked to him earlier today, what the father really wanted was a school wide notification so that other parents would know about this incident. just as school was dismissing ab

showed us the e-mail they received from the principal. i'll tell you how they are revising their security policies here in response to this. any minute now we expect to get an update from prince george's county police about a man found dead early this morning. his body was found outside a home in castlewood place in upper marlboro. he did live in the community, but not in the house where he was found. so far police are saying this was not a random killing. a brazen shooting in broad daylight has neighbors in alexandria worried. the police department will be holding a meeting tomorrow to address some of their concerns. pierre clark was shot multiple times thursday afternoon. the shooting on montgomery street near old town was the city's third homicide of the year and the community meeting with police starts at 6:30 friday at the charles houston recreation center. a local manmade international headlines after admitting he tried to

he was eventually caught and today appeared before a federal judge in alexandria. mark segraves joins us live with what happened in court. >> reporter: yeah, good afternoon. he made his first appearance before a federal judge today. he left america last year, headed to syria, and then ultimately iraq to join isil. he has now been charged with aiding a terrorist organization and he is facing 20 years in prison. his journey began when he left here and flew to london, eventually making his way to turkey, then syria, and ultim e ultimately iraq where he trained with isil fighters. mostly he said he was religious training. he appeared on kurdistan television after he left isil and was captured by kurdish military. he became disenchanted with the people there who were running the camps where he was training. he's been taken back to the

told fbi agents that he agreed to wear a suicide bomb. he says he thought that was a test from his recruiters and he told them what he thought they wanted to know. he said he was being trained to come back to the united states for an attack on u.s. soil. today was the first time his family has seen him since he left last year. they didn't have a chance to speak, but they did wave to one another. his family has refused to talk to reporters since news broke of his capture. he'll be back in this courtroom next week facing a detention hearing. he didn't have to enter a plea today. coming up at 5:00, you'll hear more from his attorney about what they think about the charges facing this young man from alexandria. that's the latest here. it's been billed as the most important trial in the death offend freddof freddie gray. the

court near richmond highway. a 20-year-old woman tells police a man grabbed her from behind and then took off. if you recognize his face, you're asked to call fairfax county crime stoppers. a teenager just moments away from being sentenced in the death of two of his friends. sam ellis' trial has been going on for nearly three hours. he's about to hear his fate after pleading guilty to two countri counts of vehicular manslaughter. the car went off the road, airborne, crashed, and flipped. two teen boys died in that crash. kristin wright is in court right now. the faa is working with airlines and pilots unions to improve mental health evaluations and encourage pilots to voluntarily report their mental

a big day in presidential politics continues tonight right here on nbc 4. this afternoon president obama said he's endorsing hillary clinton for president. he made the big announcement after meeting with senator bernie sanders. later tonight, mr. obama will appear on "the tonight show" where he's going to talk to jimmy about the future of the campaign. could a conversation with donald trump be next? >> yeah. >> but has he called and talked to you? >> no. no, he hasn't. no. >> no? >> not that i know of. >> do you think the republicans are happy with

officer goodson is charged with second-degree depraved heart murder and manslaughter. prosecutors say officer goodson gave freddie gray a rough ride, causing the spinal injury that led to gray's death. >> this is the first time the state has committed in these trials that the injuries occurred not just because a seat belt wasn't applied to freddie gray, but because of a rough ride. >> reporter: the defense says goodson is the last person you would say has a depraved heart, that he cares about people. goodson says if freddie gray hadn't stood up and banged his head against the van, he'd still be alive today. >> even as the two parties gave their opening statements, i sat there thinking, yeah, this probably would have been a bad bet to take this in front of a jury. >> reporter: why community leaders feel that this trial may be

conviction against one of the six baltimore police officers charged in the death of freddie gray. reporting from baltimore, chris gordon, news4. a man from virginia is facing a number of charges after an apparent case of road rage. as pat collins reports, police arrested timmy dubois for attacking a woman in pentagon city. >> reporter: a strange and scary encounter here in arlington. you see, a woman is driving in her car. she has her son with her. she's going past the cosco here when all of a sudden a man in another car pulls up behind her and starts yelling, you're in the wrong lane, you're in the wrong lane. then he throws something at her car. she keeps on driving, but down the road she comes to a stop so does the man in the other car. then he assaults her. he bites her. he bites her finger. and then he drives off. what happened to that

right now in d.c., an effort to help the father of two missing children, sarah and jacob have been missing since september of 2014. friends of the children's father are holding a fundraiser until 2:00 a.m. at the blagert on 18th street in northwest. the young children were last seen with their mom who is now in a psychiatric facility. >> a

he wants to learn how to drive now that his murder convictions have been thrown out by a judge. dav davonte stanford was released from prison yesterday. he apparently didn't commit those crimes. the convictions were dropped after problems were discovered with the detroit police investigation. stanford was only 14 years old at the time, but he confessed to the crimes. two weeks after he went to prison, a hitman, who was already in custody, said he was responsible for the killings, not sanford. today the young man talked about his plans for the future. >> i would like to take time to reunite with my family and try to get my life back on track. i'm not about to play the blame game. it's over. i'm out. put all this behind me and go from there and live life,o

violence in maryland, but today there's a new resource for families living in that nightmare. tracee wilkins is at the opening of a new family justice center. >> reporter: it's a one-stop shop for families in crisis, for teens who are in abusive relationships, children suffering with child abuse, domestic violence issues, all that folks need inside of this one building 100 yards from the prince george's county courthouse. the prince george's county family justice center has been in the works for more than four years now. all working together to come up with a one-stop shop where folks can have all of their needs met inside this building and also allowing for better communication between the agencies that help folks who are in crisis, families who are in crisis as well. coming up at 5:00, what families can expect once inside the door

i'm tracee wilkins. firefighters in loudoun county have launched a fundraiser to help a fellow firefighter. engelhart and his young son were injured in an accident in pennsylvania. he could be out of work for nearly a year. they launched a go fund me campaign to raise money for his recovery. if you would like to help out with that, you can head over to the nbc washington app and search firefighter. i'm in northwest with developing news about an emergency community meeting that's been called by police in the wake of a quadruple shooting in from the big ben liquors. police returned to the scene early this morning. they were here passing out fliers, letting people know about this meeting, and asking people for information about what happened. now the meeting is happening tonight at 7:00 p.m. at the fifth district community room. police are going to be

they are also looking for help in identifying this man. take a look at this surveillance video. police want to talk to the person in this video. now the images are not the greatest. you can see that the man has covered his face. he's wearing a hoodie covering his head, but police hope someone recognizes his body language or his clothing. the shooting happened wednesday around 4:30 in the afternoon in front of the big ben liquors. the gunman shot a man on the sidewalk. three others in the area were also wounded. and a police officer on bike patrol was hit by a car as he responded to this shooting yesterday. now everybody is going to be okay. all of the injuries are said to be non-life threatening, but the shooter is still on the loose and police say they need help in this case. back to you in the

a police officer with 25 years on the force says she's never seen anything like it. a woman died in virginia beach after being hit by a beach umbrella. the umbrella was anchored in the sand yesterday when a strong gust of wind blew it across the beach. the tip of it stuck the woman right in her chest and she died at the hospital of cardiac arrest. police are looking into it, but right now they say it just appears to be a tragic, freak accident. the great summer road trip is back thanks to cheaper gas prices this year. now your trip on 95 could be a bit less congested. transportation officials are allowing drivers to head south on the 95 express lanes an hour earlier every morning. starting tomorrow, the northbou e

well, he wandered away during a family party, but just last night they got a surprise phone call from police. apparently someone spotted the dog nearly ten miles away from home. that person called police and they were able to track down the owners. a woman posted video of a young trespasser, but it wasn't to get him in trouble. the security video caught the boy sneaking into the garage to give her dog a hug. she posted the video on facebook to let her neighbors know the boy was welcome to hug the dog any time. he snapped these selfies with the dog doing the very thing he was given permission to do. >> it is hard to beat a dog being found after four years, but if you just didn't beat that with the little boy. that was so school. >> awesome story. it's gone viral now. >> i believe it. beautiful weather outside. how much more of it though are we going to see? we're g

there's a new controversy surrounding a former swimmer at stanford university. court documents show he may have lied about his past. brock turner was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman at a frat party. the prosecutors cite multiple text messages from turner referencing drinks in high school and college and smoking marijuana. during the trial, turner wrote the judge saying he had never partied with alcohol or done drugs. his attorneys are not commenting on the allegations that he lied. last week turner was sentenced to six months in jail which outraged critics who say the star athlete got off lightly. with good beha

be out of jail in 90 days. a man tried to grab one woman's young daughter, but she fought back. the whole thing was caught on the store's surveillance camera in florida. >> reporter: the mother who fought off a would-be kidnapping and her 13-year-old daughter are reportedly doing well physically, but are getting counseling after their frightening ordeal. >> very, very, very brave. if my child was being taken, i'm going to attack somebody too. she did what she had to do for her baby. >> reporter: police say 30-year-old craig leslie tried to grab the 13-year-old from the dollar general store. she is in jail after a judge ordered him held without bond charged with attempted kidnapping and child abuse. his lawyer says his client is a veteran with deep psychological problems. he did not enter a plea pending a
