with more of the morning's top stories. >> i'm eun yang. today tom sherwood and mark segraves are here to talk about the upcoming primary and safetrack. so early morning has been under way and about 8,000 people have already cast their ballots. this there is the last primary of the season. and it's not just about picking the presidential nominee. after all, hillary clinton has claimed the nomination, but d.c. has to select delegates to send to the convention and has to elect four council members in four wards. so the most watched race right now is for ward 7. >> not the presidential. >> not in d.c., it's for ward 7. because strvincent gray is goinp against yvette alexander. >> basic news is after all the legal troubles of the former mayor, the scandal over his

campaign, he's trying to make a comeback politically. he's run a strong race in ward 7. and many people want him to win because they felt like he was mistreated by the prosecutors. he was never indicted. he feels very angry about all of that. he's running very hard geks . >> and what does it mean about the mayor? >> i think my colleague would acknowledge that the heat in the city council race is whether or not it's a referendum on bowser. because there are people she picked and supported and are allies. so if any of those three lose, that's a loss for the mayor because they're seen as pretty reliable votes to mayor bowser when she needs the support of the council. and of course ward

gray gets elected to the d.c. council, this is a mayor's worst nightmare is to have a former mayor on the council. because look what former mayor barry was able to do. >> and mae is running as incumbent and she's you vulnerable. >> yeah, only 100 votes. but there are many more candidates. so i don't know where all the other supporters of all the other candidates who are not running this time, where will they go. some of the ruby mae people think she brought the dissenters into her camp. but it's a very uncertain race there p. >> whenever i'm in ward 8 which is typically at a crime scene lastly, trayon white is there. he's all over the place. is he not letting the grass grow

he is all over the place. he's running a hard campaign. so i think that's one to watch. >> that is another instance where some of the support that muriel bowser has given to ruby cuts both ways in terms of some people who don't like the mayor are not going to support ruby. >> and this wizards development going up and a lot of people are not happy about that. and then they look at the homicide rate, and particularly ward 7 where the homicide straight off the charts right now. >> and even historic anacostina a very proceeding sgressive pol active opening up and coming in to that neighborhood and not that his shop will be bad, but that will create other shops for people to come in and push out the people in anacostia. so a lot of tension east of the river both ward 7 and ward 8, some of it will

tuesday in the election. >> and how will voter turnout affect this? >> well, you have to turn out to win, but there are a lot of people who feel strongly about the candidates one way or the other. a lot of people i think do want to vote for hillary clinton in this case. bernie sanders had that event this past week in the city. and so let's just see how it plays out. >> sanders has said that he's still looking to win washington, d.c. >> but he has virtually no campaign apparatus here. he's laid off a lot of people. so we're coming to the end of the democratic campaign and that will all play out to the july 25 convention in philadelphia. >> and you just talked to the d.c. auditor about some problems with the board of elections. >> auditor put out a 19 page report that was searing in its criticism of the board of elections. th a

members and they're saying we did not do this, but they did just a random test of the voter rolls and 33 dead people still registered and that's just a small simple. they picked 33 at ran tomorrow of people who had died in the city last couple of years. all 33 were on the list. there were like 500, close to 500 people i hdentically duply indicate. mark mark segraves, you're on there twice. you could vote twice if you wanted to. and there were just errors. i interviewed a young woman in ward 7 and she went to vote, she's 22, she voted there have before. she got there, they didn't know who she was, she had to cast a special ballot. so the board says after this primary, it will start turning its attention to fixing all these problems. but there are a lot of problems. >> every election year in the district of columbia, there are promises after that that they will fix the system. this has been and ongoing problem for many years and every year it seems to be a different problem. and

about, they found nearly a quarter inactive voters that are still on the rolls. and they're used beyond just vote r rolls. they use it for the jury pool. so it needs to be cleaned up. >> and the voting machines, i've voted early, the voting machines are early and pretty easy to use, but they are new. so anytime you introduce something new, that will cause backup as people try to figure out what to do. although you can ask for a paper ballot. >> you've been focusing onwards 7 and 8. what about the other two races? >> well, you've got ward 7, ward 8, and then at large races. david grasso, not much happening there. >> because he's not on the ballot until november. >> he's an independent. vincent orange is running and he has two challenges, garber and

height. i've done three debates with them and vin vincent orange says the polling has him address. >> because he's a reliable vote of the mayor. >> and white has basically said his campaign is it's time for a change, vincent orange has incumbent there for the people. garber accuses orange of being corrupt, citing a small incident last year with the health inspector that a lot of people are familiar with. so it will be interesting to see how that goes. orange has been the on the council for a long, long time. >> seems to be in a strong position going into the election. we'll take a yik bre ke a q. stay with us.

control officers. but she didn't have enough leeway or time to train them. >> the d.c. police department, and you go to any event where d.c. police officers are blocking roads for any reason, they sit in their cars most of them, i guess there are complaints daily as i go around the city, the police department gave up on traffic control. they're saying we have more important issues like kram and safety and all that. but what is more important than the safety peopling in and out of and around the city where we live and work? >> that's why she wants to hire these additional officers. you don't think that will make a difference? 20 now and 20 in the fall. >> 20 actually we could equates to four or five intersections that they can cover. and i tweeted video of a traffic control officer who had actually given up on her intersections because no one will listen to her. and so if the

call 311 for more information. new this morning, metro estimates obtained by wtop show that students have walked through emergency exit gates instead of using a smartrip or d.c. one card 3.8 million time this is school year. d.c. one cards are issued to students and can be registered for free for unlimited free rides on the metrorail system. changes were authorize that had would eliminate that requirement for the next school year and would expand pre-trips around the clock between august 8 and june 14 of next year. the first step in making way for borough in tysons, virginia will happen tomorrow morning. a wrecking ball will take aim at a 13

developers say that the borough will be a 4.2 million square foot development consisting of office, recesidential and entertainment space. starting next month, some school buss in virginia will be getting an upgrade according to wtop. arlington county schools will start using high resolution cameras again to catch cars that pass stopped school buses. it's called the stop arm camera program. the county stopped using the program last year because of some wording in the tickets being sent to violator. it's since been cleared up and will start again in a few weeks. the fine for pry vagss is $250 in virginia. stafford county schools trying to decide whether to change its cellphone policy. according to fredericksburg.com, it's been and ongoing battle since they started letting use their phones for

a suspected hit and run driver is in custody after hitting five people in las vegas. three adults and two children were hit by at driver while they were walking along the street. we're told that the kids did suffer some very serious injuries. the force of the accident knocked the runaway driver's license plate right off his car and that's how police were able to track him down and arrest him. ♪ a special tribute saturday at the national fallen firefighters memorial park. friends and family of fall en firefighters came to the park for a new dedication. they honored 250 firefighters who died in the line of duty before the

we do know the shooter is dead. let's listen in. >> seminole county sheriff's office, we have great cooperation from the fbi, all our law enforcement agencies. fire departments from orlando, seminole county and orange county. and all of the hospital personnel that have been working through the night. we are strong, resilient community. tonight we had a crime that will have a lasting effect on our community. we need to stand strong. we need to be supportive of the victims and their families. i'll ask the chief to explain what happened. >> good morning. so at the approximately 2:02 this morning, we had an officer working at pulse night club who responded to shots fired. our officer engaged in a gun battle with that suspect. the

back in inside the club where more shots were fired. it did turn into a hostage situation. from there, obviously multiple officers from various agencies responded. s.w.a.t. team responded. at approximately 05:00 this morning, the decision was made to rescue hostages that were in there. our s.w.a.t. officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. the suspect is dead. he appeared to be carrying a rifle, assault type rifle and handgun and had some type of device on him. that's what we're doing right now, checking the area for the devices. there are multiple people that are dead inside. i don't want to give anyone a number right now, but multiple people are dead inside pulse night club. and at least 42 people have been transported

around. so can to ndo not have an exact temperature obviously condolences go out to friends and family. we'll continue to work with the law enforcement on the joint investigation. and i'll turn it over to the sheriff. >> thank you, chief. while this certainly is a tragedy for our community, i will reiterate what the mayor dyer said, that this community is resilient and this is a time in which we all should come together. the orange county sheriff's office responded along with the orlando police department to the initial incident. there was definitely sheriffs involved with the orlando police personnel on the initial entry just after 2:00 a.m. this morning. in addition to that, members of my hazardous device team responded and

as well. we have had as many as about 100 of high personnel who have been actively engaged in this incident. i will also reiterate that this is a collaborative effort there our federal, state and local law enforcement authorities. at this time, the central florida intelligence exchange center has been activated. that is our intelligence sharing consortium for this region. we will be working along with the fbi as well as the other law enforcement agencies as this investigation continues. again, what i will say to our community is that if you are aware of any of the activities that may have led up to this horrific scene, to share that information with your local law enforcement authorities.

danny pane. >> thank you, sheriff. i'll reiterate a couple things that were already said, but important employee though oldhly important employee though ol i important, do we consider this an act of terrorism. absolutely. we're investigating this as an acts of terrorism. anytime that we have potentially dozens of victims in any of our communities i think we can qualify that as a terrorist activity. whether that's a domestic terrorist or international one is certainly something that we will get to the bottom of. we're glad to have the partnerships that we've already spoken about, particularly the partnership of the fbi here. one of the important things that we'll get to the bottom of, did we have any indicators before this event happened today. we will have more information i'm sure coming to all of you about who this individual is, was he a lone wolf, does he have any associates. those are certainly all of the

now as part of the intelligence and investigative activities. the state of florida is a huge state. certainly for a lot of different reasons, one of them tourism in our industry and our businesses here and we have no suggestion that there is any threat to either of those either today or in the near future. but that certainly is a concern. right now it's important the message we want to put out, we have no indication of other types of activities similar to last night's activities either in the state of florida or anywhere else in the nation right now. but we are putting every resource collective resource that we have together to validate that statement and to ensure the safety of the remainder of our citizens not only through today, but through the next weeks. as the sheriff said, i really want to reiterate the point, our see something say something campaign is valid, it works. we want to encourage people to use that. as you come up with and you're aware of information that is concerning to you, it's concng

no credible or singular information to suggest that this is any further threat to orlando or the surrounding area as it relates relates to this particular incident. the fbi is known for slow, methodical detailed investigations. we will follow the facts. we will see where they lead us to and we will take them to the ultimate end. there is nothing we won't to do to get to the bottom of will case and we will present any information we can when we can and our able to present to you. we look forward to being completely transparent as possible. i will tell you that we here in the orlando region and the fbi and the partnerships we share, we take the see something say something one step further. if you see something and you say something, we will do something. so if you ever some information no matter how small you think it may be, that would relate back to today's events, please share it with us. and i would urge you to call the

>> we're looking probably in the range of 20, but we don't want to give you an exact figure. like i said, multiple people transported to the hospital. unfortunately, there are people we're trying to clear the pulse night club of all of any devices that we did find a device on the suspect himself. and possibly his car. so we're trying to clear all that and unfortunately there, are people who have succumbed to gun the shot wounds maybe around 20 inside of the night club. >> can you go into more detail about your time line once you were able to stop the suspect and get in there? i know you had some of the surviving victims being interviewed. >> absolutely. so again, 02:00 hours, our officer working extra duty there responds to shots fired. he and then two other officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect. this developed into a hostage situation. so right about a little after

we were being contacted by people in the bathroom, nearby at least 15 people that were in a separate area. and our biggest concern was future loss of life. we wanted to save those people. so we did an entry and exchanged gunfire with the suspect again after explosive devices were used after our bear cat was used to get through the withdrawal. and from there, we exchanged n gunfire and he was dead at the scene. s.w.a.t. team can d. a great job. at least 30 people were saved during that rescue. [ inaudible question ] >> i would say we're looking into all angles right now. we do have suggestions that that individual may have leanings towards that particular ideology, but right now w

to have those two weapons for most of us, that suggests pre-planning, that he planned on doing this, that he planned on some type of a confrontation with police to have those type of heavy weaponry. we were told he engaged with the first officer on scene working the club off duty, two more officers responded. so you had three officers in a shoot-out with the suspect and the suspect then retreats into the bar where he takes hostages. multiple people hostage, but as well as firing the weapon at the same time. police get to the point where information they developed both from outside and from people inside calling out on cellphones suggest a terrible high level of danger. so the s.w.a.t. team use an explosive device probably to blo

a hole in the wall. s.w.a.t. officers throw flash bangs which are diversionary devices to try to get the shooter to look one way when they're coming the other. and basically killed him in the shoot skrout. b shoot-out. but at least 20 killed, 30 people injured in a horrible mass casualty incident. law enforcement at this point is calling it a domestic terror. obviously with this many killed wound, it's a terroristic time of agent. the question is who did it, what was his purpose, did he just not like this bar or somebody in it, was it a national terrorist incident, we don't know yet. but fbi knows the name of the individual, so i think we can be assure that had they're going over anything that relates to this guy from his cellphone to his e-mail to we
