being beefed up as a result of the shooting from overnight. mayor muriel bowser just released a statement minutes ago ahead of today's festival saying i have been briefed by chief cathy lanier about increased security measures. today as always well not be deterred by hate as we gather to celebrate love. we're also hearing from orlando's mayor, buddy dyer. >> our community experienced a very horrific crime. many lives were lost and many more individuals were impacted by witnessing the crime. many were saved however by the heroic efforts of the men and women of opd. >> a news conference is scheduled in about 15 minutes in orlando. we'll continue to bring you the latest developments. back to you. right now we do want to turn our attention to what is going on out there, outside. good morning, everybody.

40 people out of their hoof hom blaze in manassas. it broke out last night around 11:00. this is video from a hotel guest there across the street. two people had to be taken to the hospital for minor injuries. the cause is still under investigation. and police in prince william county are investigating a stabbing that happened in manassas on double day lane. police say one man has life threatening injuries. they don't have a suspect in custody right now. and d.c. police are investigating a shooting this morning. they say it happened on f street just after midnight. one man does have life threatening injuries. now a story that we have been following for the last day. she rose to fame right here in nbc. former "the voice" contestant kr christina grimmie is being remembered for her amazing talent and spirit. she was shot and killed as she signed autographs. and this morning we're

barry errant has the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: fans in orlando, florida gathered to share their grief over the death of 22-year-old christina grimmie. >> just horrible. >> reporter: leaving signs and flowers at a makeshift memorial. >> no reason to take someone so perfect in music and general and just take her life away. >> reporter: police say grimmie was signing autographs when kevin james loibl approached and opened fire. >> no indication that he knew her. we're looking into that, trying to find a motive for the crime. >> reporter: a note attached to the door where the gunman is believed to have lived. grimmie's brother tackled him and he killed himself during the struggle. >> definitely could have prevented future loss of life there.

>> kings dominion will reopen after a partial power outam forced to close yesterday. this happened just before 8:00 last night. our nbc affiliate in richmond tweeted a picture of a roller coaster stuck halfway up a hill. park says all rides were stopped and safely evacuated. the maryland man shot by police outside dallas love field airport is now being charged with two counts of assault. police say sean diamond using large rocks to smash car win toes and threaten the mother of his children when an officer showed up. they say diamond was shot several times after he lunged at that officer. he's still in the hospital. turning to the race for the white house, it's not hillary clinton in donald trump's ross hairs. he had tough words for mitt romney after romney told an audience that trump is setting a bad

knocked the runaway driver's license plate right off his car. that's how police were able to track the man down and arrest him. ♪ a special tribute saturday at the national fallen firefighters memorial park. friends and family of fallen firefighters came to the park for a new dedication. they honored 250 firefighters who died in the line of duty before the memorial was built in 1981. the names of each of them are etched into a brick at a special section of the park. we're staying on top of the breaking news out of orlando, the mass shooting there where 42 people are in the hospital, as many as 20 people suspected dead. the shooter took hostages and died in gunfight with s.w.a.t. officers. we've also learned the nature. suspect. be pete williams reports that the shooter is om

were able to reach him by phone. the father says it's possible that his son actually noted a while back in miami two men kissing and that may have caused this according to his father. again, authorities are still -- >> forgive me, i have to interrupt you as we go to the police briefing. >> we have cleared the building. and it is with great sadness that i share we have not 20 but 50 casualties. in addition to the shooter, another 53 hospitalized. because of the scale of the crime, i've asked the governor to declare a state of emergency. we are also issuing a state of emergency for the city of orlando so that we can bring additional resources to bear to deal with the aftermath. our focus is on identifying the victims and notifying the mi

clergy to pray for those families and this community and this nation for healing. in the last several hours, the men and women here in law enforcement have been working diligently to ensure the overall safety of everyone involved. you've seen most recently where there were members of our hazardous device people, bomb units working from the orange county sheriff's office with units from the orlando fire department to make certain that we did not have any secondary type devices off what have you in the crisis site itself. that process has taken an extended period of time tone sure t to ensure the safety of everyone. so that's why we have not been able to remove all of the victims, if you will, from the crisis site at this

who are going to speak and then we'll answer some questions. >> good morning. as many of you are aware, a little after 2:00 this morning we were notified of many victims, gunshot victims as central florida's only number one trauma center. we immediately activated our trauma plan, brought in six surgeons, one trauma surgeon. we continue to operate on a number of victims. we have found many of them are critically ill as a result of their injuries and we're in the process of trying to reunite families as we identify the names of these victims. as has been mentioned it will take time and we ask for your patience and we'll reunite the families and the victims just as quick
