jay gray is begins our coverage in orlando. >> reporter: an outpouring of support, a stunned nation searching for answers. less than 24 hours after the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. the clash of gun fire rose above the sound of music in the nightclub pulse. >> oh, my god. people are getting shot, dude. >> reporter: at least 50 were killed, 53 more injured, the deadliest shooting in u.s. history. >> i have ballistic vests here for any of our individuals entering this red zone. >> reporter: the wounded were moved to hospitals while dozens still inside the club were held hostage. the standoff continued three hours before s.w.a.t. team stormed in, killing the suspect during a fire fight. >> per staging we now have our lar

>> reporter: as the magnitude of the attack set in, desperate family and friends searched for loved ones. >> i don't know where my son is. nobody can tell me where my son is. if he's been shot, if if he's dead. no one knows. >> reporter: we know more about the alleged triggerman, omar mateen born in new york. he moved to florida with his family more than ten years ago. the fbi learned about him four years ago when co-workers alerted agents about comments he made supporting violent extremism. a year later he was questioned about a passing relationship with a man who became a suicide bomber in syria. since then, agents say, he showed no signs of preparing for a terror attack. police say he called 911 just before the attack, pledging his allegiance to isis and talking briefly about the boston marathon bombing but his father tells nbc news, the killing spree may have been fuelled by his anger

other gay clubs in the city opened sunday night. a heavy protective police presence at all of them like the popular parliament house. it was packed with patrons seeking to comfort sadness with togetherness, despite the shock. >> it is different when you see it on tv and it is in a different state or city. when it is in your backyard, it's mind boggling. >> 24-year-old kayla collins stood with a sign on the road leading to the pulse nightclub holding fast to a message of hope. >> we're here to show the community we are completely behind them and we love and support them and if they need a shoulder to lean on we're here for them. >> reporter: out of the glbt community center a handful of flowers lay in memory as the community try to come to terms with the tremendous loss. >> unbelievable. we're a tight community here. easy going and gay friendly. i don't know why. >> joy metropolitan community church organized a

news unfolded throughout the day. >> the storm will pass. it will pass and the sun will rise again and joy will come in the morning. this tiny church couldn't hold everyone looking for solace but the message resonated loud and clear. >> doesn't matter where we are, we are all vulnerable and it is important to love each other and be kind. >> there were several efforts to organize vigils tonight. the city of orlando asked groups not to do that tonight. they wanted to have their police power to handle the investigation here. we talked to the director of the gay community center here and he said they are looking to organize a larger community vigil that could happen stoons tomorrow night. >> days, weeks and months of healing to be sure. aaron, you have been on the ground several hours near the pulse nightclub. from what you are seeing there, it looks like this will be an active crime scene for quite sometime. >> reporter: yeah. initially

james howell of indiana just hours after the orlando club shooting. near his car, parked facing the wrong direction. a 911 call came in for a report of a suspected prowler. listen to the man who says he and the suspect made eye contact. >> as soon as i looked at him, he came out of the car and started to run across the street and started to hide in between those trees and bushes. he stood there and we looked at each for a whole long minute and then he -- i guess he kind of got very nervous. >> here's what santa monica police say they found in his car. three assault rifles and chemicals that could be used to make explosives in his car. police have not said what charges howell faces, but one official said there is no known link to orlando's massacre. the gay pride festival in west hollywood went off without any
