>> hurtful. hurtful. there's no other way to describe it. >> reporter: he is one of many family members who started this monday looking for answers. he lost his 25-year-old nephew in the pulse nightclub. >> we're trying to find out where they're keeping his body so we can make all the arrangements. >> reporter: family members were directed to the local senior center to find information about the victims. we spotted clergy and counsellors coming and going. today orlando wants desperately to help. >> it's heartening to see how much support there really is. >> reporter: volunteers have shown up in droves at the glbt center. they've been putting together donations that are coming in so fast it's hard to keep up. it comes in and sent right back out to first responders and people working with families or even folks donating blood. >> a couple came over and they were from nortro

drove here from north carolina just to donate blood. >> i got the call yesterday hysterical. i will be here every day until they tell us we can go home. >> reporter: she's been hugng anyone who needs it. at times like this, momma dee, believes in the power of love. >> if that was my son, i would want someone to hold me and not let me go until it felt better. >> reporter: and so tonight we do expect we'll see at this vigil a lot of people gather to hug and support each other. we have seen some come to pray. there are concerns in other parts of the country as well about what might be happening in the gay clubs around the

circle with more of our coverage. >> reporter: aaron, the violence down there has brought a great deal of pain and sorrow here to washington. gay bars are thought to be safe havens, but after what happened in orlando people are rethinking security. for this orlando massacre to happen on pride weekend makes it doubly hard for people here. jr's is one of the oldest gay bars in washington. jimmy is the manager. >> it's unfathomable to think that you're that vulnerable to somebody who is just hates everything about you. >> reporter: freddy is the owner of freddy's beach bar and restaurant, the only gay bar in arlington. today he was hanging black bunting in honor of those

capital, so we continue to operate that way and we tell residents, just like we did yesterday, we're going to live. we're not going to be scared off by terrorists or hate filled people with big guns. >> reporter: within minutes of the shooter in florida being taken down by orlando police, d.c. police chief cathy lanier was on the phone making changes to security here in the nation's capital. >> within the first 45 minutes to an hour, just started moving some resources around here. i mean, we had on the schedule, as you know, on sunday large events on the gay pride festival downtown and several other events going on. >> reporter: the news says the increased security you saw at the gay pride festival like the patdowns may become more common place depending on what they learn from the review of the orlando shooting.

and rethink what we do. i would imagine over the next several weeks we'll get a much clearer picture of things that we may need to reconsider or reevaluate. right now we're trying to adjust daily and hourly, if necessary, based on information that we learn. >> reporter: as for the proactive measures the police department takes, chief lanier says she has quarterly meetings with the hospitality industry here in d.c. to talk about security protocols and they update those regularly. she says it will be weeks before they know the lessons learned from orlando. back to you in the studio. the gunman's father says he never noticed any signs of his son becoming radicalized or anything that would indicate that he planned to carry out an attack. the son omar mateen was an american born in new york to parents who came here from afghanistan. he had a degree

a private security officer. mateen had been married twice and his first wife describes him as being abusive. speaking to nbc news, the gunman's father expressed frustration and confusion. >> he was the type of person that he got a good education and a good life and a good job, so i'm as shocked as you are. when he was coming to see us, i didn't see anything, emotional behavior. i wish i did see something that you have brought my attention. this would not have happened. >> because you would have -- >> i would have took action against him. >> mateen had been on federal investigators radar after some inflammatory comments he made to coworkers. the fbi closed their investigation after interviewing him twice. health officials are still encouraging people to donate blood, but at this point the need is no

urgent. in the past day, thousands of people have been answering the call for blood donations. blood drives are being held in four places. they are include e street, rockville, alexandria, and fairfax. there's still a couple hours left to donate today, but the red cross is saying although they sent blood to orlando, the current drives are not being sent to orlando. jurors are deciding the fate of a fairfax county lawyer accused of nearly killing a mclean attorney and his wife. a question posed to the jurors, does this look like a man in his right mind? the second surge of safetrack. coming up on news4, i'll explain. and temperatures struggling

developing right now, jurors are deciding the fate of a former military lawyer accused of a bizarre home invasion that nearly killed a mclean couple. his defense said he should be found not guilty because he was involuntarily intoxicated at the time. julie carey joins us with the prosecution's response. >> reporter: the prosecution says andrew schmuhl is a con artist.

pain meds from doctors and then those pain meds made it so he couldn't remember he tased, stabbed, and shot a mclean lawyer and his wife. andrew schmuhl's defense attorney ended his closing argument with this photo and this question for jurors. does anyone see him as a man in his right mind that night? the photo of schmuhl was taken in the hospital after his arrest. they had to give him narcan. he was wearing only a diaper when he was arrested. for three hours on that evening of november 9th, 2014, inside this mclean home, schmuhl terrorized leo fisher and wife sue duncan. a bizarre interrogation came just weeks after fisher fired schmuhl's wife from the law firm. thot

the plan was her plan. they suggested she manipulated schmuhl's medication and then gave the orders. the prosecution says there is no evidence of what medication schmuhl was taking at the time of the attack. schmuhl helped skillfully plan and carry out the mission. he is in complete and total control. they have zero liberty in three hours in that house. and prosecutors say schmuhl's true motive is clear. there is no question or doubt that the intent that night was to end leo fisher and sue dun n duncan's life. in fact, the attack ended when duncan played dead. prosecutors say schmuhl was thinking clearly enough that night to take his hat, his jacket, the spent shell casing, and the pieces of the taser before he fled from the house. jurors are considering a variety of charges. they are headed home for

night, but will return to deliberate tomorrow. a couple drivers got a pretty bad scare in fairfax county. police are investigating reports someone shot up their cars. the first incident happened around midnight saturday on old dominion drive near falls run road. the second near bellview road. no one was hurt, but the cars do have what appear to be bullet holes. a chilling video from the account of one of the victims of the nightclub massacre in orlando. it was posted the moment gunman fought his way into the club and opened fire. amanda posted this clip to the snapchat account. she was a 25-year-old nursing student and was very involved with the lgbt community. the video shows she didn't realize she was hearing gunshots. her sister-in-law says amanda and her friends scattered when they realized there were gunshots. the friends managed to get out, but amanda hid in the bathroom and that's where she was shot and killed. pat lawson is in the newsroom with a look at how differently the presumptive nominees are responding. >> hillary clinton said today is not a day for politics. she didn't mention trump's name, not even once. clinton discussed the shooting and laid out her plan for defeating isis. she called for more scrutiny for people buying guns. meantime in new hampshire trump renewed his call for a temporary ban on certain people coming into the u.s. and there should be more intense screening. >> if the fbi is watching you for suspected terrorist links, you shouldn't be able to just go buy a gun with no questions asked. the terrorist

the safetrack program is getting ready to shift gears. it is going to be those in maryland feeling the brunt of it. phase two starts this saturday. it is going to have a big impact on prince george's county. the county council just got a briefing on the project. >> reporter: people here in prince george's county need to prepare for major delays if they decide to take metro on the orange and blue, silver lines. they're looking at waiting for up to an hour. to make this clear to the county council, metro's general manager and the chair of its board all came for a visit. metro's general manager and the chair of the board, jack evans, visited the prince george's county council to explain among other things the upcoming impact of the second surge of metro's safetrack initiative. >> around the region people are trying to step up and figure out to how to m

>> reporter: a spokesman said the county lacked the money necessary to supplement metro's efforts to move commuters around closed metro stations on the orange, blue, and silver lines. >> our neighbors to the east and west in montgomery and in virginia and d.c., they're running surpluses right now and we're not. >> reporter: the county is planning to offer a free shuttle for residents from new carrollton metro station to the green line. the complete shutdown makes the second surge more complicated than the first that involved single tracking. >> this one requires obviously to do the bus bridge. you have a little bit more options for people to go to the green line. >> whatever t county can come up with is more helpful, whether it is buses or ride sharing. anything that will lessen the inconvenience for the passengers. >> reporter: the second surge begins this saturday. we're expecting this m

employees who were currently right now in the hospital. the gunman had been on the radar of the fbi before after comment he made to coworkers. investigators are now looking closely at two trips he made. in the past five years, omar mateen took two trips to the middle east, saudi arabia, and the uae. he came to take part in a muslim pilgrimage, but federal investigators say they want to know more about those trips. >> while they look at some of his travel, there's a bigger question about how omar mateen became radicalized. >> pete williams explains why it may be a complicated task to find out. >> one of the puzzles for the fbi is what was he radicalized about and by whom. he claimed to be interested in isis, al nusra,

al qaeda. in terms of trying to say what he was radicalized by and how, the fbi is finding that hard to figure out. he was all over the map. he was on a terrorism watch list. if he tried to buy a gun then during the time he was under investigation, the terrorism investigators would have been notified of that. they would have been told the guy you're investigating is trying to buy a weapon. once the investigation was closed and he was taken off the terror watch list, there was no mechanism then for when he bought the guns in early june for telling the people who had investigated him a couple years ago, hey, the guy you were once investigating is going to buy guns. we asked justice department officials today whether they thought that system should be changed. they say it hasn't been discussed, but they would take a look at whether that system should be changed as a result of the

graham. investigators say tomas luu rammed through a gate this morning. he made it 75 feet onto cia grounds. he crashed the gate to get the cia's attention, but his mother says he was troubled and distraught by what happened in orlando and went missing. today a maryland man whose family operated a day care out of his home admitted to child pornography and exploiting a child. >> reporter: here at the federal courthouse in greenbelt this afternoon, steve baker pleaded guilty to a federal charge of sexually exploiting a minor to produce child pornography. he admitted having 50,000 images of child pornography and 1,000 videos of it both on his work computers here at

home computers. it's in that home state records show where baker's family once ran a day care operation up through 2012. prosecutors didn't go into the details about the victims, but said a lot of those videos were downloaded by baker onto his comput computers. in an affidavit, it showed what the fbi found when they went knocking on the door of baker's business. they questioned baker if he knew why they were there. he said identify child porn on my computer. i've been waiting for somebody to come. he said i'm actually downloading a file right now. do you want to see it? he's facing between 15 and 30 years in federal prison when he is sentenced on his charges in october. the loudoun cty

right now, we're working to find out what caused a crash in montgomery county that set off a chain reaction and sent three people to the hospital. this happened yesterday on lockwood drive and white oak. the driver hit two people in several cars. one of those cars hit a few more cars and the truck ended up on its side. the two pedestrians and the driver are all in the hospital with some pretty serious injuries. there was nobody hurt in this huge fire in montgomery county, but fire officials say it is nearly a total loss. chopper 4 flew over the home this afternoon in potomac. more than 65 firefighters have had to put this massive blaze out which left only the frame

nbc 4 responds to some timeshare troubles. a woman in virginia gave hundreds of dollars to a company to help her rent her timeshare. >> but she says the company never did and won't give her her refund. susan hogan tells us about what happened. >> for people who own a timeshare, it's almost impossible to use all of the points in one year. as this woman found paying another company to rent it out seemed like a great deal, but this deal turned

>> reporter: she and her husband recently bought into a timeshare company and so far traveled to places in virginia, florida, new jersey, and las vegas, nevada. >> we have a lot of points. >> reporter: and they simply can't use them all. when she received a call from a timeshare company in florida, she was intrigued. >> it seemed like a deal i couldn't pass up. >> reporter: pay $950 up front and the company will advertise and promote her listing. >> they told me after one rental i would make that money back. >> reporter: that was back in october. as the months passed by with no renters, she realized this deal was turning into a rental dud. >> i was told after a couple rentals you're going to have a nice christmas. >> reporter: she isn't laughing now after five months and no renters to speak of. she asked for a refund and was flatly refused.

means going forward. >> reporter: after going all the way to the court of appeals, maryland's highest court, prosecutors today for the first time got baltimore police officer william porter on the stand to testify against a fellow officer on trial for murdering freddie gray. officer caesar goodson drove the police wagon in which freddie gray suffered fatal neck injuries in april of 2015. goodson called for a unit to check on the prisoner and porter responded. porter testified he found gray on the floor. gray asked for help and porter assisted him getting onto the bench. porter asked gray do you want to go to the hospital. gray said yes. porter testified he told officer goodson, gray said the magic wor words. >>
