>> reporter: thousands gathered in support of love. >> reporter: hundreds pay tribute to the victims in northwest d.c. >> i'm just trying to be here and be supportive of my community. >> reporter: they are standing in solidarity with orlando, with a candlelight vigil and prayer service here in sterling, virginia. >> it's amazing the fellowship, the love, the harmony, that is exhibited here. and that is something that should stand as an example for the world. [ applause ] >> well said. good evening, i'm chris lawrence. we have lots of new information coming out of orlando, inclusion reports the shooter might have gone to that nightclub several times before this weekend. there's some good news on the wounded still in the hospital. and here in d.c., tributes to the victims and

on capitol hill. but first, from downtown orlando we're joined live where a massive vigil just wrapped up? >> reporter: there was a lot of raw emotion here tonight. can you see behind my a few people lingering from the vigil that ended a little before 9:00 this evening. there's some people who have been talking to each other and singing songs here, and you can also see behind me the colors on the performing arts center here in downtown orlando, that building lit up in the colors of the rainbow flag tonight, there was a clear message of unity. >> reporter: from above, a crowd of thousands stood, shoulder to shoulder. >> the moment that each one of those family members heard that they lost somebody, their lives will never be the same. >

rights organization planned this vigil where voices were lifted in song. ♪ i see your true colors shining through ♪ >> reporter: and as the staff of the pulse nightclub took to the stage, voices were lifted in defiance of hate. >> we are here to stay! [cheers and applause] we will be bigger and better than you can ever imagine. >> we will stand beside you to fight for your rights to be who you are. [cheers and applause] >> hate will not define us. hate will not defeat us, because we are one orlando. [cheers and applause] >> reporter: at least three times, the orlando community cheered the police officers, the heroes who rushed to save their friends and loved ones and complete strangers. and as candles were lit and raised to the heavens,

tolled 49 times for the souls this community lost. >> eric -- >> this was an opportunity, not for closure but to feel like a sense of community, a little bit stronger. >> reporter: next, this community will have to bury the 49 people who died here. money has been raised, $2.4 million, we heard this evening, that is to cover the cost for medical expenses for those in the hospital and to cover funeral costs for those who died here. we learned that president obama will visit orlando to show his solidarity with the victims' families here on thursday. chris? >> the community seems like they're hurting, but they seem far more defiant than defeated. thank you so much, aaron for giving us a glimpse into what they're going through. the a name of the last victim was released and we now know all 49 people who died. the youngest victim was only 18 years old. w

high school graduation. we're also hearing from a bouncer's ex-girlfriend. star shelton says she texted kimberly morris saturday night, having no idea it was the last time she would hear from her. >> it was around 12:30 a.m. in orlando, and i sent her a text message and said i miss you. and she wrote me back and her last words were i miss you too. and i'm thankful i have that, you know? >> we have the profiles of dozens of victims on our app. and doctors are telling us they are very optimistic that all those victims in the hospital are going to recover. right now investigators are trying to figure out how often omar mateen went to pulse before his deadly rampage. regulars at the club tell the orlando sent nel they saw him there dozens of times. he did go to disney land in april, and investigators are trying to determine if that was a social visit or whether he determined that to be a potential target. there are alsots

over how he was able to buy guns having been investigated by the fbi. he was a security worker and told co-workers he had family connections to terror. someone spray painted an anti-gay message outside typhoon. and someone covered the word "gay" with "gun". shomari stone spoke with those who are aware of the graffiti, but they're trying to stay focussed more on messages of love. >> reporter: that's right. the focus here is love. hundreds paid tribute at dupont circle. there's a picture that says you will be missed, chris, juan and

orlando. although the mass shooting was miles away in orlando, the effects of it felt around country and the world. this was one of thousands of vigils held tonight across the globe. >> it hurts. >> reporter: heather strange is saddened by the orlando mass shooting. she stands in solidarity against hate at a dupont circle vigil. omar mateen targeted pulse. >> i'm just trying to be here and be supportive of my community in d.c. and i had a talk with a friend, my mom actually works at a gay club and she's in fear of her life. >> reporter: many told me they feel scared, rejected and hated by some members of society. just a few blocks away, someone spray painted hate against gays on a sidewalk. d.c. police are investigating. >> and for this to be happening right after this terrible thing happened is really

to unite against hate, some members of the lgbt community and muslim community, mourning the loss of the 49 killed, 53 wounded. >> you are beautiful because you're here to speak for those who no longer can. >> reporter: these papers show the names and ages of the victims. this man knows all too well about hatred and rejection. he says his parents won't talk to him after he came out. >> i was abandoned by my family. >> i have family members that still don't talk to me. >> reporter: the fbi says mateen called 911 during the attack and pledged loyalty to isis before he opened fire. many muslims say he represents hatred, not islam. >> i that i whatever got limb to this place is far deeper than religion. >> reporter: now many of the people out here tell me that they were pleased to see d.c. police. it gave them a sense of security. as for the victims, well, people tell me they're going to continue to

way tonight for the person who police say shot and killed three people on a farm in west virginia. sheriff's deputies say the victims were killed at valley high timber farm, not far from berkley springs. the shooter has been identified as a man named eric shoout. right now work is under way on what state and federal officials call the top maintenance project on the baltimore, washington parkway. the 198 interchange is getting a major face-lift. they will repave the entrance ramp at 198 west. they plan to work between 9:00 and 5:00 a.m. to minimize traffic. a major shutdown is included for eastern mke

vigil. and darcy is joining us to give us an idea of what you saw and heard. >> reporter: they all gathered here at the unitarian, universalist congregation here in sterling, virginia. dozens of people from several different faiths, including muslims and the community at large came out for this candlelight vigil. they walked from the church to the street corner and stood in silent solidarity with orlando. >> we stand against any criminal act, especially if it is done in anyone's name. so we are just here to show our sympathy with the victims of orlando shooting. [ bell tolling ] >> reporter: now inside, they rang a bell 50 times, each representing a life lost in t

shooting. yes, that does include the shooter. during the prayer service, we heard from religious leaders who condemned the violence and prayed for hope and healing. >> doesn't matter what the tone of the skin, the shape of her eyes, whether we have a beard or not or we shave, doesn't matter what we believe in, but we are first human. >> we stand against any type of bigotry or hatred of any community. we stand against the bigotry and hatred or violence against the lgbtq community. >> reporter: there were many messages shared here this evening. one of them, the response to hate must be love. chris, back to you. >> thanks so much, darcy. you know, tonight a moment of silence for the victims turned into several minutes of chaos in the floor of the house of representatives. and we get another great day tomorrow. a very nice afternoon turns into a beautiful, beautiful evening. we've seen some clouds move in from time to time, but all in all, not bad at all. 77 degrees, still rather mild with a north wind at 9 miles per hour, those clouds helping to keep things on the warmer side. 71 quantico. so we're going to cool, temperatures to upper 50s to low 60s. no rain to talk about. radar is dry, and it will be for the next day or so. and we get a little unsettled. you can see the clouds streaming in. this is high to mid-level clouds, but you can see the pattern, look at the clouds going up and over this ridge. that's where the heat is. to the north we have a storm system where the cooler air is. can you see the rain coming in from canada. high temperatures today, only 73 in boston, when it was 97 in atlanta. all that heat that we saw has

it moves to the south, the cooler air is moving in from the north. neither one are really going to get here. it's going to be kind of nice temperature wise, into the low 80s, but it's going to get unsettled. showers and cooler on thursday and friday, and if storms are able to develop, we could be talking about pretty good rainfall during the day on friday. tomorrow though, at the bus stop, nice, nice and mild. temperatures around 60 degrees to start off the day. 82 in the afternoon. another great day on our tuesday. wednesday is when we start to see things go down. 78 in martinsburg. we'll see a few clouds from time to time, but pretty nice afternoon. wednesday is the day of change. more cloud cover moves in as the jet stream's right on top of us. 83 degrees with a chance of showers. better chance on thursday. friday is the day to watch. high temperatures may only be in the low 70s during the day. pretty good northeasterly wind, too, and a much better chance of

jimmy: as you certainly know by now, early sunday morning there was another senseless shooting, this time at a dance club in orlando, florida. a dance club. it left 49 people dead, which is the largest loss of life due to a terrorist attack on u.s. soil since 9/11.
