happening trying to be sorted through. >> a 2-year-old boy wading in shallow water near disney world's grand floridian resort when he was grabbed by an alligator. >> authorities are searching for this 2-year-old boy. what started out as a family vacation here quickly turned into horror, a father desperately trying to wrestle his son from the mouth of an alligator. a frantic search, 50 officers combing a man made lake for a 2-year-old boy snatched while on vacation at disney world. >> the 2-year-old male child has not been located. this is still a search and rescue operation. >> just after 9:00 tuesday night police say the father and son from nebraska were on the edge of the lagoon when

attacked the child sdprmpt when the father entered the water and tried to grab the child, was not successful in doing so. at some point i'm told the mother may have also entered the water. so the parents diligently tried to get the child. >> reporter: there have been at least 41 unprovoked major alligator attacks in florida since 2010. >> everyone here at the walt disney world resort is devastated by this tragic accident. >> reporter: police say no such attack has been recorded at the lagoon before. >> we have an alligator trapper on the water. >> reporter: there were signs warning visitors not to swim in the lagoon. >> as a father and grand father we are going to hope for the best in these circumstances, but based upon my 35 years of law enforcement experience we know that we have som

>> reporter: overnight authorities have taken four alligators out of that lake but have not yet found the boy. they say the child was playing in about a foot of water or so. of course, the deadly massacre on sunday and now this. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. >> there is like a swimming pool area and then a sandy area. you not supposed to swim and there are signs posted there. >> it is absolutely shocking. we want to bring in spokesman for the sheriff's office. our hearts go out to this family and what they must be going through right now. what have they been able to tell you about how this happened, what the circumstances were. >> it was just after 9:00

call from this area. this child was playing in shallow water. he heard what i understand was a splashing sound. he looked over and saw his son literally in the mouth of an alligator. he quickly moved towards the situation, tried to grab his child from the gator's mouth. i believe he received some sort of laceration on his hand or arm and was not strong enough to pull the child out of the alligator's mouth. disney had a number of boats in the water at the time. fish and wildlife brought boats into the area. our boats were brought in. dive team was brought out. at least 50 people came out here at some point last night to try to find and rescue this child. what we have is a rescue and recovery operation going on. it's just a tragic, tragic

>> reporter: this morning the wife of gunman omar mateen has not been charged with a crime and for now is said to be cooperating with the fbi. together with their 3-year-old son she and her husband are seen smiling in this facebook photo. now the 30-year-old ducks from cameras and media questions. >> did you know your husband is a terrorist? >> reporter: mateen's wife told investigators she knew about the plan even driving him to pulse nightclub at least once to scout the scene. she also claims she tried to talk her husband out of it and failed. she was born and raised in northern california. on tuesday fbi agents visited her family's home there. one neighbor said she had not seen the young woman in years. >> after she married and left i have no idea what kind of girl she is. all i know that

good girl. >> reporter: in a conversation tuesday mateen's father offered little information about his son's wife. he did reveal more about his son's state of mind saying mateen applied to police academy and was rejected. >> i worked very hard to put him in the police academy. >> reporter: the florida department said mateen filed a complaint saying he was turned away because he was muslim. reports that mateen had been to pulse several times. his first wife was asked if she felt he had gay tendencies. >> i'm not going to lie, i questioned it in my head when i was with him. >> reporter: federal authorities are trying to piece together what led mateen to gun down club goers early sunday morning showing little emotion and

mercy. patience carter and her friends. >> i could see my best friend on the floor and looking lifeless. i was like i don't think i'm going to get out of here. >> reporter: in a bizarre twist, blood bank confirms omar mateen donated blood on may 29. in the first 24 hours after the shooting in orlando there was an urgent cry for blood donations. >> thank you very much. let's bring in pete williams, more information on the investigation. i am not a lawyer so i need you to help me with the legal criteria here. if you are with someone who tells you they have plans to commit a crime like this, if you take them to the spot where they are in some ways casing the scene or the target, if you are with them when they buy ammunition does that qualify you

>> perhaps not an accessory but she could be charged. i would be surprised if she is not. according to officials here is what she told the fbi, she drove him to the pulse nightclub at least once maybe more because he wanted to check it out. she tried to talk him out of terror attack. here is new information. we are told that on saturday night the night of the shooting when he left the house he told her he was going to go visit friends. she told the fbi that she feared he was going to go shoot people at the pulse nightclub. even though she had that fear she never called the police to warn them. the fbi isn't sure whether what she is telling them is true, whether she did try to talk him out of it. she could face charges and here is why. under federal law it is illegal when someone fails to

committed. in this case the crime would be mateen's planning to attack the nightclub and his preparations to carry out in essence attempted murder. >> the planning and knowing about the crime of planning. i guess the question for investigators is not just whether they should charge her but when. it sounds like she is still talking and cooperating. >> that is a big concern and that is why they say they are in no rush because on the one hand she has the potential liability herself. on the other hand she has the best information about him, she is the closest person to him. it is the decision about when to charge. even if federal authorities decide not to charge, the state could certainly bring charges by itself. >> pete, real quickly, does she

child. we've got very expert professional staff with orange county sheriff's department. we are putting everything we can into this to try to find the child. >> is this a large area? are there a lot of alligators? what are you and your team doing? >> it's a lake. the water body is a lake that has a lot of canals attached to it. i wouldn't say there are a lot of alligators. there are a number in the lake. we are just going to have to keep looking until we find it. >> i understand you have already taken several alligators out of that body of water over the last several hours. can you talk to me about that process and what had to happen to those alligators? >> well, our process is to go ahead and any alligators we have to take those alligators out and we will have to check them out. we will have

desperately rescue his 2-year-old son from the mouth of an alligator. this authorities got the 911 call and they say that an alligator believed to be between four and seven feet in length snatched the 2-year-old boy that had been playing at the water's edge with his father. the family is from nebraska and the search operation continued throughout the night. authorities were able to pull out four alligators from the water but so far no sign of the boy. that operation continues at this hour. >> ohorrific story. the investigation into sunday's nightclub massacre is focussed on the wife of gunman omar mateen. according to officials familiar with the case noor zahi salman knew her husband was considering an attack and tried but failed to talk him out of it. federal agents say she told them she had driven her husband to

tamron and natalie. an awful story, so awful i think if you are a parent and you have a kid around maybe outside the room for a minute. >> it has been a very -- our hearts go out to everybody in orlando. this has been about as bad a period of time for one city to have absorbed. from friday to tuesday. >> and all very different. this one is last night a 2-year-old boy was dragged into a lagoon by an alligator at the disney world resort. the boy and his father apparently wading at the edge of a man made lagoon, disney's grand floridian resort when an alligator attacked the boy. the father entered the water, tried to grab his son but was unsuccessful. there were signs apparently warning visitors not to swim in the lago

previous attacks at this location. a spokesman said everybody at the resort is devastated. authorities caught four alligators in the hours after the attack and still looking for this one. i don't know what to say. >> they were in shallow water according to the report, just a foot of water. >> wading in the water. >> and we have been there. we have seen the property. this is not in an isolated area. this is in the heart of the disney property. they have a little shuttle bus if you stay at the hotel and take the bus and shuttle you along hotel to hotel. this is in the center of all of that. >> earlier on "today" we had official on in charge of the search. they talk about how they have never had in the history of the resort anything like this, never sightings of alligators. as we heard them say they were searching

they caught four overnight so clearly this is an area where there are alligators in the water and needs to be clearly marked. >> beyond the disney property in florida covered the story in the late '90s, 3-year-old boy he and his brother wading in low level water, he was 3, same thing happened. a gator got this child. 11 foot gator. so in florida we know there is a huge population of gators. at this property terrifying. >> property is being developed these creatures have nowhere to go, the wetlands are being invaded. it's just -- >> as a parent or as a human being fighting an alligator for your child. can't go there. >> the pointf
