a top story, a 2-year-old boy dragged into a lagoon by an alligator that the family was on vacation at disney world. the toddler's father said he tried to grab his son but could not get there in time. sara rosario is there with the latest. >> reporter: officials have been searching for that 2-year-old now for 14 hours. just after midnight the father calling 911 saying his 2-year-old playing in shallow water in the pond was taken away by an alligator. he said he tried to get his son out of the alligator's mouth. he received some minor injuries but the ail gator swam into the darkness. officials started searching frantically by ground and in the air using boats in the water to find that boy and using sonar

that alligator. what we're told they're doing is they found four alligators so far. they had to kill the alligators and look inside to see if any of them swallowed the boy. so far no evidence that any of them did. it's been a grueling search as the night has gone on. again, 14 hours is very tough to do in the dark, but now that it's daylight officials are hoping they'll get success today. they have since switched their search efforts to search and rescue to search and recovery but they're telling us they're not giving up. sadly for that family at the happiest place on earth turns into tragedy three days into their vacation. thank you so much, barbara. we'll be sure to keep yu updated. >> thank you, sarah. what a sad story. lauryn, is the rain moving out of here? >> we'll start to see a little chanin

some brightening of the skies, but you can see some of the rain moving through. this was earlier. it was hanging out thwart baltimore. we'll start to see a little bit of activity, the light stuff. you can see stuff in west virginia and light showers moving through the region and, again, some brightening of the sky. there's an area of low pressure sitting up by the great lakes. it's going to move down into our region. that's when we're going to see the heaviest rain. we've got several days of rain but it's much needed rain in our area. we're going to time everything out in a few minutes. >> thank you. right now police in d.c. are investigating several different robberies. please responded to an armed robbery in the 1700 block of columbia road in the northeast, only one suspect was reported in this case, but several of the other cases, witnesses reported seeing two masked men.

now we turn to the ongoing investigation of mateen. she drove him past the pulse nightclub to scope it out before the shooting. federal agents say she tried to prevent him from carrying out the shooting but never alerted authorities. 49 people died and 53 people were hurt in sunday's shooting. >> in about an hour there will be a vigil at the white house to support the city of orlando. at 6:00 p.m. there will be a prayer service. in alexandria the community of lgbt will speak and we'll have much more on the nbc washington app. manassas city police are searching for a man who tried to abduct a woman. they say a woman was walking with her son in stonewall park on monday when the man

she screamed and fled into the wooded area. if you notice anything suspicious, please contact police. a 22-year-old howard county woman is dead after she was hit by two cars on eastbound i-70. around 10 p.m. last night on ebony shore she was hit just east of route 29. maryland police say short was driving in her car when she and her boyfriend started to argue. please say she stopped car and started walking in the road. police say she was hit by two cars. a driver stayed on the scene and police do not plan to file any charges. >> several people remain in the hospital this morning one day after a serious bus crash in northern virginia that also killed one person. it happened on the georgia washington parkway near stratford lane. that's where kristin wright is. kristin? >> reporter: we found out in the last few minutes of the 15 people taken to the

two are in critical condition. of the two good samaritans who jumped on the parkway to help, police are following several leads in finding out who they are. u.s. park police are looking for witnesses who can help them find out why a shuttle bus and a car collided head on on the g.w. parkway in mt. vernon killing a person on the bus. the bus overturned and paeshlgs visiting from china became trapped. medics rushed 15 people to three hospitals including driver of the car and somebody in it. those with the worst injuries were brought to inova fairfax, a level one trauma center. three people were critical. it could have been worse were it not for the good samaritans who jumped in, lifted the bus and rendered emergency aid until police arrived. we do know that the bus driver was not hurt and did talk with police.

launched this morning. they'll be broadcasting across parts of africa, asia, and latin america. another thing of note, they're going to try to land the rocket in particular spot, a drone ship. if they can do this, this is going to go a long way in flying our own astronauts into space. barbara, back to you. terror in orlando. 33 of the victims are still in the hospital this morning. six of them are in critical condition. we're starting to hear stories of the survivors. many were trapped in the club's bathroom with the shooter. some say he was spraying the bathroom with bullets. some played dead. we're hearing from the first responders who rushed to save lives at the pulse club in orlando. >> they didn't realize what they were hearing at the time, but doctors rushed in to work without any hesitation to treat

the father of omar mateen is speaking out. he said he saw his son on the day before he carried out the attack and didn't notice anything wrong. he also says he can't forgive him for what he did. >> right now i don't forgive him. this is very -- i don't know why -- what he did, why he did, but it's unforgiven to hurt their own family. we live in the united states as a family. >> he refused to answer questions about his son's wife and what she may have known about the attacks. >> the mental state of the orlando shooter is coming into kwer. joining us now with a psychiatrist's perspective on omar mateen is dr. joshua weiner. thanks for joining us as always. so the gunman's ex-wife is claiming he was mentally unstable, had bipolar disorder and was physically abusive and his former co-workers are saying he was not well. he executed what

been a very planned thought out attack. can someone who's mentally i plan a thought out plan like this one? >> absolutely. you can be psychotic, delusional, hearing voices, but that doesn't mean he wasn't capable of doing what he was able to do. you have some who are very ill but able to methodically plan and others that won't be. but you can't say because he was able do this he lacked a severe mental illness. >> he maintained the same job for several years. what does that say about his mental state? >> well, it says it was probably a little more likely that he was better than not. let me give you an example. i have a patient in my practice who's delusional, schizophrenic. he's been going to work for 15

who is chronically hearing voices and has delauusion after beliefs. just because you're functioning doesn't mean you're mentally ill. >> it would seem anyone who would commit such a horrific act has to be mentally ill. how do you connect those two things? >> right. i absolutely think it's not a typical person who's going to go do this. so anyone committing a horrific act. there must be something wrong. we might not have a label for it. but clearly there was some major major impairment in his thinking. >> i think a lot of people would say does it resolve people from responsibility saying i'm mentally unstable, he was mentally ill. you have to have some responsibility for what you did. >> that's why you go to court if the person is alive, not in this case, andan

and make a judgment based on each individual case. certainly obviously there are some cases where you decide the person's mental state really prohibited this from being able to appreciate the behavior of what they were doing. others would say, that's not an excuse. they're guilty. >> that's why we have experts like you. his target was a gay nightclub. now there is evidence that he frequented the club and reached out. what do you make of those revelations? >> i think it is have interesting. it's possible he was struggling with his own sexual identity, even though he was married. he may have targeted them because he hated what most recommended himself. he may have felt so angry and upset about this that that's why he was targeting this particular group. but who knows? we'll need to know more as time goes on. and finally expert advice for the families and the surviving victims who are

attack. the sheriff's office is planning another update at noon. the fbi could soon bring charges against omar mateen's wife. agent i say she confessed to being with mateen when he purchased the bullets and holster that he purchased for shooting. she also drove him around the block before the shooting. she never alerted the police to his plans. 30 victims are still in the loplop hospital. six are in critical condition. a bus crashed head on with a car in the mt. vernon area yesterday. 15 people total were hurt. one of them died. now, in the latest in the fight against zika. that will be a community meeting. it begins at 6:30 at the lisin ter on jefferson street. the rio olympics will not
