here in washington. plus, get ready to end a very wet week. >> storm team 4 is tracking the arrival of showers. jim handly from the live desk. we're expecting a news conference to begin any minute from orlando with an update on a tragic gator attack at walt disney world. at this point, all beaches in the massive resort are closed. the attack happened around 9:00 last night. sheriff's deputies say an alligator grabbed a 2-year-old off the shore while he was wading in about a foot of water. rescuers say the attack was not survivab survivable. they are now in a recovery operation. >> our ultimate goal is to try to bring some closure to the family by recovering their loved one. >> there are new swimming signs around that lagoon, but

there are warning signs about alligators. five gators have been pulled from the water there and killed in the search for that little boy, but none of the five seem to have taken part in the attack. we are watching if for the late information from the orange county sheriff's office. i'm jim handly. chris and pat, back to you. crash investigators trying to figure out why a driver jumped the curb, hitting the side of this apartment building. chopper 4 capturing the scene in hyattsville just a short time ago on bright seat road. no word on any injuries. back to shootings in the district that put a police facility on heightened alert today. >> these happened just a few minutes apart. pat collins is live in southeast this afternoon with new details. >> reporter: two shooting incidents around lunchtime here in

distance of the metro. around 11:50, a bullet pierces a window at the park police headquarters on anacostia drive. it appears the shot came from a parking garage of the nearby metro station. it became a shelter in place situation as police went out and tried to locate the shooter. nothing found. then a few minutes later on stanton road a burst of bullets in the air. look at all the shell casings here. witnesses told me two young men got into a running gunfight. one was shot in the leg. police got him and recovered the gun. the other guy got away. these homes are practically brand new, but she says it is still a dangerous place to live. >> i've got a little girl and i don't like it. like, i could be out here with my daughter and gunfire just happened and my daughter could be dead. i could be dead. i've got a child to raise and i've got to be

daughter. you get what i'm saying? i don't like this violence. i can't wait to get out of this neighborhood. >> reporter: now at one point, they thought these two shooting incidents might be related. now they say no. on the scene today police chief cathy lanier. we're going to hear from her coming up at 5:00. back to you. now to the latest on the orlando nightclub attack. the fbi is reconstructing the month, days, even hours and minutes leading up to the shooting. right now they're sifting through volumes of tips about omar mateen's activities and associates. they haven't found anything in his social media profile to indicate there were other targets. they're asking anyone who had contact with mateen to give them a call. his wife did not call police to warn them before he left their house saturday night. 30 people are still hospitalized and six of

condition. we've also learned the firearms used in the shooting are being processed at quantico. the nightclub shooting is renewing the debate on gun control. connecticut democrat staged a filibuster on the floor today. he is demanding a vote on gun control. he is citing the newtown massacre. he said he can't look into the eyes of the childrens' families and say congress has done nothing since that shooting. this afternoon two people are still in critical condition after a deadly crash in fairfax county. a car collided with a tourist shuttle bus yesterday on mount vernon. the chinese embassy is telling us the person who died and the two who were most seriously injur

that were visiting as tourists. investigators are trying to track down the good samaritans that helped save lives. the skid marks on the gw parkway and some pieces of the bus, the only signs of the accident. it was just before 5:00 p.m. when a shuttle bus and a southbound car hit head on. the bus rolled onto its side and slid off the road. passers-by, some 15 to 20 of them, uprighted the bus so they could get to the people trapped underneath it. police want to identify them to give them a pat on the back and get whatever information they have to determine exactly how this accident happened. coming up at 5:00, what the chinese embassy has toy

i'll see you in just a minute. donald trump attracted supporters and protesters at a rally in atlanta this afternoon. during the speech, the presumptive gop presidential nominee delivered a message to his fellow republicans. trump said republicans can either, quote, stick together or let me do it by myself. trump has faced some backlash over various proposals, including his call to temporarily bar foreign muslims from coming into the u.s. police arrested four protesters today. hillary clinton is in virginia today. the presumptive democratic presidential nominee talked about national security at the virginia air and space center in hampton. the discussion came after clinton met with senator bernie sanders. the two campaigns said last night's 90-minute meeting focused mainly on unifying the

today a baltimore paramedic testified at caesar goodson's trial. he's the only police officer charged with freddie

murder in freddie gray's death. gray did not appear to be breathing. the judge ruled a police detective can testify for the defense. that detective is expected to say that at one point an assistant medical examiner considered gray's death may have been an accident. this gas station's surveillance video footage captures the fiery scene after a man's car burst into flames and set his clothes on fire. you may found this video a bit disturbing to watch. the man suffered third-degree bu burns, but he is expected to survive. it happened early this morning at a gas station in rochester, new york. he was putting a gas station in the trunk of his car. as he walk-- he's going to

egypt flight 804 confirms the plane has been found in the mediterranean sea. investigators just said earlier this week that the black boxes on that plane were expected to stop emitting their locating signal on june 24th, just nine days from now. the investigation committee says maps are now being drawn of that area and committee members will decide how to handle the wreckage. it is still unclear what caused that plane to go down, but radar indicates it turned a full circle before disappearing. fire and smoke alarms also went off inside. more on these developments as they come in. i'm jim handly. it's been an incredibly hard week for folks down in orlando. we're getting a better idea of the evidence that have been pulled out of the shooter's cell phone and computer. >> jay gray joins us now from orlando where

scene. they still have a lot of work to do, jay. >> reporter: yeah, guys. they really do. they're still inside the pulse nightclub and recreating that crime scene. this community is trying to find some way to begin the recovery and healing here. the images dark and blurry, the sounds in this new cell phone video tell a horrific story. an explosion of gunfire as s.w.a.t. team members rushed into the carnage inside the pulse nightclub. >> bodies laying around, kind of just stacked up. when you see that amount of death, that's pretty horrific. >> they stood toe to toe, went face to face, with a mass murderer and performed heroically. >> reporter: data from omar mateen's cell phone and c

downloaded a significant amount of terrorist material. >> there's nothing to suggest that there was any other target other than the pulse nightclub. >> reporter: investigators are focusing on what, if any, role, mateen's wife played in the massacre. she pleaded with her husband not to carry out the attack when he told her he was going to visit friends just hours before the killing spree. >> law enforcement is talking to everyone associated with the shooter. >> reporter: as the search for answers continues here, so does the struggle for this community to somehow cope the tragedy. tomorrow president obama will join in that effort. >> he indicated that he would like to come visit and comfort and show support and unity with orlando and the victims. >> reporter: victims that include 30 survivors still in the hospital right now, 6 in critical condition. we've received and reviewed some

mateen was very proficient firing a 9 millimeter pistol. he did pass the psychological exam and had a high score on the written test. here in our area, several prayer vigils are being held tonight for the victims. at 6:00, there'll be an interfaith prayer service at united christian parish in reston. leaders from the lgbt community will speak in market square at 7:00. the d.c. center for the lgbt community is hosting a town hall and walk. that starts at 6:30 at the headquarters of the human rights campaign on rhode island review. around 8:00 tonight, there's going to be a candlelight vigil in dupont circle. let's take a look at our weather again. do we need to dig out our rain boots and totes and stuff?

tomorrow and friday. there's the potential of a storm system coming in here friday morning that could dump a lot of rain on us. that's something we're going to be watching very closely. we've seen a few showers around town. now looking at some sunshine out there mixed with those clouds. a little bit of a humid air mass. 80 degrees right now. winds out of the south at 8 miles an hour under mostly cloudy skies. very nice evening for the most part. yes, can't rule out a stray shower or two, but looking very nice. temperatures today at or a little bit below average. on the radar, not much going on. a couple of light showers into charles county right along 301. again, these are just very light sprinkles. most of the rain continues to get out of here. overnight tonight into tomorrow not bad. maybe a shower early and again tomorrow afternoon, but i didn't put it on here. i don't think we're going to see all that much rain tomorrow. here's the wider picture.

through. now you also see right here -- this is the clearing that's coming on in here. we do have another system back to the west. that's a frontal boundary. this is the front. now this is something that we're going to be watching too. watch this storm. look at this pinball wheel here. this little bowling ball is going to go right down this boundary and it's going to go right down and towards our region. as it does so, it is going to bring us the potential for some heavy rain. first off tomorrow not a big deal. like today, a couple of showers out there. a mixture of sun and clouds. high temperatures everywhere. then we'll see the shower chances. tonight showers to the west. watch how they fall apart. tomorrow morning starting off on a dry note maybe a couple showers. 7:00, a couple showers. mostly dry. here comes that storm. some of these

identification, but there's no reason for us to believe that the body that was recovered is not the body of lane graves. the effort to continue with the wild life management here at disney will go forward. i'm going to turn it over at this time to the executive director for swc, who will share with you more details about their efforts. >> thank you, sheriff. first again, we just want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with this family on behalf of our entire agency. we are terribly heartbroken at this outcome. i want to thank the sheriff and the orange county sheriff's

entire tragedy. they've been great to work with and they're a true benefit to this community. i'd also like to thank disney. they've been totally cooperative as we work through this in how we handle this tragedy. although we have some sort of closure to this, our investigation is still ongoing. we're going to continue to evaluate the evidence we have and we're going to try to continue searching. we're going to make certain that we have the alligator that was involved and that we remove it from the lake. we're going to either verify that we have already captured that alligator through forensic work or we're going to continue to look for an alligator until we find the right one. we'll continue to work with disney as they work to continue to address alligators in their park and continue that strong partnership. with that, that concludes my remarks. thank you. >> the family has asked that we do deliver a messa

you about the process to try and confirm whether or not one of the alligators that has been located is the right one or not. >> just really quickly, we're going to look at the five alligators we have already taken. we're going to compare bite marks. there is a good chance we already have the alligator because we focused our efforts in that proximity, in that area where that incident occurred. there's a good chance, but we're going to go through the process and forensics to make certain. if we can't get a certain match, we'll continue to go out and look for alligators. >> where did you find the alligators? >> i believe the question is where did we find the child. he was within the immediate area

it took some time to go through and make certain. the water is kind of murky, but our divers were able to locate the body. we used sonar equipment and other means. >> do you believe the child was dragged in the water and drowned? >> of course, the autopsy has to confirm that, but there's likely no question in my mind that the child was drowned by the alligat alligator. [ inaudible ]. >> there's signage in the area that there's no swimming. disney will look at all of their protocols and signage going forward. >> do you recommend they add signs to warn of alliga

our ultimate concern is about the safety of the guests here at disney as well as the public. as the investigation continues, we will continue our death investigation with the orange county sheriff's office. i'm certain there will be opportunities in the future to look at what has occurred here and see if it can be prevented in the future. >> you've been listening to a live news conference from orlando in which we heard news that is likely to offer little comfort for the family. they have now found that little 2-year-old boy's body. we learned his name. lane graves. >> found near the site where he was last seen before being snatched by that alligator last night near a resort hotel at disney. let's take you now to florida for the latest on what we have just heard and the search for this little

>> reporter: an absolutely heartbreaking update here. the sheriff here in orange county giving the media an update. as you can see behind me, all these media members are gathered still around the sheriff right now as he speaks from that podium. just a couple minutes ago, we learned the sheriff found that 2-year-old boy at 1:45 p.m. they searched for more than 17 hours. the sheriff telling us his body was found intact. the name of that boy is lane graves. his parents matt and melissa heartbroken and devastated. they came from nebraska on a family vacation here to the happiest place on earth. just three days into their vacation, tragedy strikes right here. the father telling us his son was wading in water just about one foot deep when an alligator attacked, taking his son into

the water in the darkness. more than 50 people worked to try to find his son. we're talking about dive teams, people searching by boat and air. the sheriff telling us earlier today that it was a very complicated search. this is a manmade lake, so they have to search every bit of it. they took out five gators at one point, euthanized them, and tried to search them to see if the boy was inside. they didn't find anything at that time. just an hour and 15 minutes after that update is when we learned that they found that 2-year-old boy lane graves. again, the sheriff is still here updating us on this situation. i'm sure this is a very fluid situation. they have stopped the search because they have found him. the sheriff telling us earlier today that they weren't going to stop until they found his body. they knew earlier that there was no way he could have survived this, but they said to bring closurto

stop searching until they found his body. >> i heard one expert say compare the alligator's bite to bites. it would have been virtually impossible for them to try to pry the boy out of the alligator's grip. will they be looking at bite marks to try to match the alligator in question to some of the ones that they have already captured? >> reporter: we're told the body was found intact. i would assume they know the alligator who swallowed the boy. the father tried his best to rip the boy from the alligator, but couldn't. they did find that 2-year-old boy lane graves .ba

in d.c. politics, former mayor vincent gray is step closer to a political comeback. he defeated council member yvette alexander to obabecome t nominee for his seat in ward 7. he lost in 2014 in the race for mayor amidst allegations of scandal

trayon white beat the incumbent laruby may. the only incumbent to win on the council in the primary was brandon todd, ward 4. he beat urban planning specialist leon andrews. todd was also endorsed by mayor muriel bowser. for reaction to the primary results, troy johnson is here with today's talk around town. troy, this primary represents the comeback of vincent gray and many believe a huge defeat for mayor bowser. >> the mayor goes 1-4 in this particular primary. three of the candidates she backed that would support her agenda in the future will not be on the next council. people i spoke to believe this sends a strong

bowser. she might be out of touch with some things that d.c. residents want to see in the city. there are some great supporters who are happy to see them ghim win. he's been involved in local government for most of his life. this could set up an interesting dynamic between the mayor and gray. some of the supporters i talked to say they'd like to see him run for mayor in the future. >> something he says she won't rule out. >> exact lexactly. >> people are concerned about crime in the city, the homicide rate, the lack of economic development, and gentrification east of anacostia. >> the one at the top of the list is the homicide rate. that's the thing they were really concerned about. we're at the point where we're somewhere around the neighborhood of 53 homicides in d.c. this year.

crime in general is having on the community is a really thing. people want to see more jobs for young people. they want to see more educational opportunities. more chances for young people to succeed. they are concerned about gentrification. they're seeing changes in the community, but they don't feel they're changes that are going to benefit the community. east of anacostia, they have seen what's happened to the neighborhood around the navy yard. they've seen changes and people are being displaced from areas that they've lived in for years. d.c. residents are finding it unaffordable to live in their own hometown. >> now they're promising the cranes are coming back and the crime is going to come down. a lot of folks in ward 7 were really angry about the walmart not

center. >> exactly. they're saying this is something that's been in the works for a long time. there is the possibility of another project being built there, but they're saying they want to make sure it's a business that's going to enhance the neighborhood and not really create a gateway for more gentrificati gentrification. they want to see the neighborhood change. they want to see something that enhances their community. there's a plan to extend a busy local road right over an existing highway. where it could be happening and how you can weigh in. plus, we're getting our first look at th e

now to presidential politics in the wake of the orlando attack. republican leaders are trying to reign in donald trump. >> today he called for government surveillance on muslims in america. steve handelsman live on capitol hill with the latest. >> thanks. surveilling mosques in d.c. and virginia and maryland and the rest of america was suggested by donald trump last year, but this eye-popping proposal is getting a lot more attention now coming from a presumed presidential nominee just days after the club attack. under fire, but defiant donald trump today in atlanta ramped up his rhetoric abo

the new metro wheelie avenue station. it wouldn't take much of a sleuth to discover that work has begun on the expansion of the international spy museum at l'enfant plaza. this is what it will look like when it is done. it contains the world's largest collection of espionage artifacts on display. it will operate on f street during its construction. the new building is expected to open in the spring of 2018. it seems like, oh, maybe a few weeks ago everyone's lawn was this emerald green. it was so lush. and now it's all bone dry. ugly out there. >> how quickly the tables have turned. we need some rain. thankfully there is some rain in the forecast. not this evening. if you have plans outdoors, the weather is looking to cooperate. but it's going to be tomorrow night kind of toward the tail end of the evening

move into the area and potentially impact your friday morning commute. right now storm team 4 radar virtually dry and dry for the bulk of the hours. some scattered showers, maybe a few storms in the overnight hours. tomorrow we're going to be humid and a touch warmer. heavy rain in the forecast tomorrow night on into early friday. as far as severe weather is concerned, that's really going to be the greatest risk that we'll continue to track. some areas could see over 2 inches of rainfall late tomorrow night into friday morning. we could see some high winds with isolated wind damage. we'll continue to monitor that. spectacular weather just in time for father's day weekend. tomorrow the weather will be having a low impact on your day. most of the daytime is going to be mainly dry with some sun. the best chance you are dealing with a shower will be later in the day tomorrow. have that umbrella handy.

launch a rocket every two weeks for the rest of the year. police arrest a man in seattle for making threats against a mosque. he posted the threats online and they say he claimed to have bought an assault rifle and extra ammunition. police say it's not the first time this man has made threats against a mosque. a daring rescue after a woman accidentally drove her car into a river in new jersey. she's okay this afternoon thanks to a good samaritan. the man was leaving a nearby gym, he saw what happened, and s he jumped into action. >> i saw a gentleman run past me. >> reporter: he was in the right mace at place at a bad time. he saw a woman drive into the river. chopper 4 above the scene around 9:00 as moss dove in and rescued the woman behind the wheel. >> no apparent

i still don't know how that all came about. incident number one, around 11:50, a bullet goes through the window of a u.s. park police building in anacostia. it appears to have come from a nearby metro parking garage. park police spring into action. >> all the officers here on the scene responded as if we had someone shooting at the building. >> reporter: no shooter found there. a few minutes later, incident number two. a running gunfight between two young men on stanton road. one juvenile wounded in the leg. but look at all the bullets that were fired. we're lucky no one else was hurt. on the case today police chief cathy lanier. >> initially, we thought they may be connected. now we don't think they are. there's a little bit of difference in time and a little bit too far of a distance to be associated with here.
