investigations in to this gunman. they also continue to search for a motive in this mass shooting. we have team coverage on the aftermath of the terror. we begin with nbc's jay gray live in orlando. jay? >> reporter: hey there, jim. investigators are still inside of the pulse nightclub here but the fbi is focused on data pulled from the alleged gunman's phone and laptop, looking for any clue that may help understand how and why this happened. new cell phone video tonight. an explosion of gun fire as police storm the pulse nightclub. >> went toe to toe and face to face with a mass murderer. >> bodies laying around, stacked up and then you see that amount of death, that's pretty horrific. >> horror carried out, police say, by 29-year-old omar mateen.

families of the victims. >> many we talked to here say they feel like the president's visit is important to help this area begin to recover and heal. that's the 4r5i69est live in orlando, jay gray, news 4. live desk we are keeping an eye on capitol hill where a marathon filibuster is coming up on 12 hours. democrats have been talking and talking and talking, trying to force a debate on gun control. you are looking live at the floor of the senate where the filibuster started just after 11:00 this morning. in the wake of what happened in orlando, lawmakers have been trying to close a terrorist gun loophole. if both republicans and democrats say they want to prevent people from buying a gun if they are verdicted for links to terrorism but they can't agree on a deal. democrats are holding the floor as a she of force but the debate has gone on so long they have started repeating each other. >> senator se

4. tonight, vice president biden weighed in on the issue of guns at a fund-raiser here in washington for a group called sandy hook promise. the nonprofit is named in memory of the 20 young kids and six teachers gunned down in 2012. it aims to prevent gun violence and crime. >> you would have thought several years later that on matters relating to rational gun safety we would have made some progress by now. >> biden said his original legislation that banned assault weapons took seven years to pass. it expired a decade ago. he said he will never give up efforts to institute a similar measure. our string of beautiful days might be taking a break for just a bit. we have rain coming in. doug? >> tracking rain right now on storm team 4 radar. most of the rain

alligator pulled him in to a lagoon at disney's grand floridian resort. disney posted no swimming signs but the sheriff says the boy and his father were a foot off shore and there were not signs warning of gators. all that is left is skid marks and skraps of methodal but police say an incredible fete of strength at the crash aet the gw parkway likely saved lives. investigators believe 15 to 20 people helped to upright the shuttle bus that flipped on the gw parkway what after it hit a car head on. one person trapped under the bus died. several had the chance to now live because of those good samaritan. >> it's not uncommon to see people helping a bicycle that crashed but nothing that big but it was great. >> reporter: police want to find those good samaritans, two of the 17 chinese tourists are in

the first phase of metro's safetrack repairs ends tomorrow and that's good news for those in northern virginia. now on to phase two. tomorrow morning, metro gm will holdal news conference to talk about final preparations and travel advice. phase two work starts saturday between eastern market and minnesota avenue and benning road stations. it will last for 16 day and impact your commute on the orange, blue and silver lines. you will find details on our nbc washington app. just search safetrack. if you drive anywhere near the third street tunnel, it's hard to miss the capital crossing project taking shape there. the project is creating city blocks in the air, above the tunnel. the developer says this is the first large tunnel in an urban area since 9/11. the construction has caused fits for drivers of the estimated 60,000 cars who roll through that tunnel every day. traffifl

improve when the project wraps up in, wait for it, wait for it, 2020. tomorrow morning, a judge will take up a defense motion to acquit officer goodson who is facing the most serious charges among the baltimore police officers charged in freddie gray's death. the prosecution rested the case today calling 22 witnesses but no one definitely made the case that van driver goodson took freddie gray on a rough ride. if the judge doesn't grant the motion to acquit the defense will get a chance to make its case. tomorrow we will find out how long a former military lawyer will have to spend in prison for a violent home invasion in mclean. he was found guilty on tuesday of all of the charges against him. prosecutors say he broke in to this home of attorneys and tortured them for hours. they say it was an ak of revenge after fisher

thousands of the juveniles are arrested in the district every year, many of them commit crimes later in life but a program has been having tremendous success, making sure a first offense for a young person is their last. only on news 4 tonight, how boxing is helping one young boy turn his life around. >> reporter: like to many kids, bernard got in trouble at a young age. unlike many kids, he's getting a second chance and it starts here at this gym. like most days now, bernard's mom drops him off at this boxing gym on benning road. toefd was graduation day. the 11-year-old achieved high honors in his elementary school class. a few months ago, bernard and his mom weren't sure they would make it to today. bernard had been arrested for being in a knife fight at school. >> two boys and my

the bathroom. one had a knife and put it on a little boy's stomach. >> reporter: despite the violent nature of his offense he was allowed to enter a diversion program instead of charged with the crime and going before a judge. juveniles with criminal records are far more lakely to wind up in trouble again. >> it's like a new life, a new beginning. it's like i start over fresh. >> reporter: the ace program or alternatives to this court experience provides young offenders and their families counseling and other services and the youths are paired with a mentor and a community-based activity. >> we look at how they are doing in school, what's going on at home, how they are doing on a personal level to identify the services most helpful. >> reporter: bernard was sent to noma's boxing in northeast. >> we are more than boxing. it is one of the tools to get them in he. once they get in here they can identify with a positive role model. it's a safe haven and
