threat for tonight. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson. >> and i'm chris lawrence in the storm center with doug kammerer. how could this sunshine of all things make it worse? >> you can feel the humidity outside today. any time you get that sun that just allows the instability to occur. it allows for energy. that sun is just giving us energy for the day. temperatures into the mid 80s and we have some strong storms. we have a tornado warning up towards the portions of the panhandle of west virginia. a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for everyone tonight until 10:30. look down to the south. we're seeing these storms that have just fired up. back to the north and west, we're watching a strong storm just south of martinsburg in through jefferson county. this is the storm right here. this is a very strong storm maki making its way down the south and east at

that warning is for morgan county and berkley county, west virginia. this storm will have the capability to produce 60 and 70 mile an hour winds. new folk around 4:06. martinsburg at about 4:35. you have about a half an hour if you live in and around the martinsburg area to watch this storm. another severe thunderstorm warning in effect for madison county and orange county. this severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 4:30. another one around the warrenton area. not a warning yet, but we're seeing these storms beginning to develop. this is out ahead of what will be the strongest part of the symptom. look at this line developing here. numerous severe thunderstorm warnings along it. we're talking about 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 tonight. i'll be here throughout the rest of the evening. an

the first to bring them to you. >> showyou can stay a step ahea its all wi it all with a nbc washington app. dougyn ricketts will be here all afternoon. lawmakers want to learn more about the orlando gunman and the way he used social media before and during the shooting spree. a senate committee sent a letter to facebook asking for information about omar mateen's facebook accounts and activities, including messages, photos, and postings. nbc news reports mateen apparently searched the terms pulse orlando and shooting during the rampage. he wanted to see how much attention he was getting and posted several messages in support of isis. lawmakers as f

information by june 29th. the owner of pulse has created this online fundraising site to help members of his staff whose lives have been upturned since the shooting. many of them don't have a way to pay their bills now that the club is closed. the owner says any money raised through the website will go directly to the staff. about 40 club workers have been impacted directly or indirectly by what's happened. the president and vice president are now in orlando to meet with families of some of the shooting victims and survivors and first responders. we'll have more on that in a live report coming up in our next half hour. just into the live desk, there are new numbers from the cdc about the impact of the zika virus here in the united states. three babies have been born with zika-related birth defects. another three have been lost either by miscarriage or aborted because of birth defects. all six women were

the virus while they were traveling. health officials are expecting an uptick in locally transmitted cases in the united states in the summer months. there are 234 cases of zika in pregnant women in the u.s. at this moment. the agency also announced today it will begin regularly reporting on poor outcomes of pregnancies if there is evidence of a possible zika infection. a man is in custody right now in connection with a brazen daytime shooting that sent four people to the hospital. d.c. police say kevin cole is the suspected getaway driver. the shooting happened last week near the liquor store at north capitol street and new york avenue. investigators believe a man targeted one of the victims and that three others were shot in the exchange. they previously released these surveillance images of the suspected gunman who is still out there. now to the defense gets its chance to lay out their

baltimore police officer caesar goodson. they say prosecutors failed to prove goodson gave freddie gray a rough ride and caused his fatal injuries. chris gordon as the latest. >> reporter: the defense is now presenting its case on behalf of baltimore police transport wagon driver officer caesar goodson. this comes after the judge barry williams denied the defense motion to dismiss all charges saying at this point he has to view the evidence in a light most favorable to prosecutors, but the judge says it is a closer call on the charge of second-degree depraved heart murder. the defense argues that there is no evidence that goodson gave freddie gray a rough ride in the wagon in april of 2015. but prosecutors argue that officer goodson's failure to

failure to call for medical help is enough to establish that he recklessly risked gray's life and that they say constituted second-degree depraved heart murder. it will be up to judge williams to render a verdict on the seven charges in this case because officer goodson has waived his right to a jury trial. jurors are now deciding the fate of a former military lawyer convicted of a near deadly attack on a mclean couple. jurors could give andrew schmuhl five life terms. schmuhl was found guilty tuesday of tasing, stabbing, and shooting leo fisher and sue duncan. schmuhl's mother asked jurors for leniency. she also apologized to the victims, telling them, quote, your tragedy is our

well. julie carey is in the courtroom and will have the jury's recommendation as soon as it comes in. a big development in the investigation of egyptair flight 804. investigators have recovered the cockpit voice recorder. search teams are still looking for the flight data recorder. all 66 people on board were killed when the plane crashed into the mediterranean sea. memorial service for the 2-year-old boy who was snatched by an alligator at the walt disney world resort. the family was vacationing at disney world when the gator pulled the child into a lagoon on tuesday drowning him. the cause of death has not officially been released, but they believe it is drowning. the family says it is now looking for closure. the future of a busy highway is up for discusn

drivers. the when and where on how to weigh in. it's a popular snack being pulled off the shelves that could be in your house right now. we have a severe thunderstorm warning for jefferson county and loudoun coun county. this is a storm that developed over the last hour or so. right now right around the charlestown area this is coming right through charlestown. very strong winds associated with this. may see some hail too. it will be in loudoun county in the next half hour. we continue to watch these

and again we continue to track the severe thunderstorms rolling on through the area. we are just getting started everyone. this is going to be a very busy night tonight. not only do we have the severe thunderstorm watch until 10:00. we have a flash flood watch in effect until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. we're going to see some very heavy rain. there it is. the tornado warning. i knew that was coming here. i just talked about this tornado warning back towards martinsburg. this now includes martinsburg in through west virginia with this storm. this storm has shown signs of rotation. it continues to rotate on down. the weather service is now saying that the rotation continues here and this is something we'll be watching this tornado warning in effect for berkley county, west virginia, includin

until at least 4:45. i want to zoom in and show you exactly where this is. if you're around this area right along over towards hedgesville and right along in through morgan and berkley county, this is an area you want to make sure you're inside your house. you want to be in an interior room. if you have a basement, get to it. this is right around the hedgesville area. this tornado warning in effect for martinsburg until 5:00. thanks guys. a tornado warning in effect until 5:00 for the martinsburg area and hedgesville. they just discontinued that last tornado warning. took it back. i'm going to track this one for you with golf ball-sized hail. let's go ahead and track this. this is moving at about 30 miles per hour down to the south and east. on this track, it would come very close to the tomahawk area right around

and baker heights at 4:33. this storm one of many storms in our region. another area of storms down toward the south in madison county. these are moving a little bit slower. the concern i have with this one in fauquier county, it's going to have some very heavy rain. if you live in fauquier county around and east of warrenton, watch out for severe rain. this new tornado warning in effect for places like martinsburg. the wider view shows what's really happening. we have a storm system coming out of the great lakes and it is spinning up toward the north. you have a very warm and humid air mass out ahead of it. a lot of energy is here. these storms are all out ahead

as the cold front comes through, that's this line right here. this line has had some severe weather. upwards of 60, 70 mile an hour winds. flash flooding in parts of ohio. around the pittsburgh area, a flash flood warning in effect for pittsburgh. this is what's going to be coming through the area later on tonight. a very dangerous situation. that's why we're in weather alert mode here and we're going continue to be as we go move through the night here. heads up for this one with that flash flooding. i'm going to go back one more time this to graphic right here. then we'll throw it back to you guys in the studio. martinsburg, watch out around berkley county and morgan county. this will be in towards jefferson county. if you live in the panhandle of west virginia, now is the time to take cover. we'll continue to keep you posted throughout the rest of the night. a tornado warning in effect for berkley county until 0

the storm center where doug and lauryn ricketts have been keeping an eye on these storms. >> we have these strong storms moving in very quickly. they're developing quickly and moving quickly through our region. i want to stress this is just the sort of what i think is going to be a very stormy night in our region. right now we have just isolated or scattered storms around the region. 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, things will get going for everybody. one severe thunderstorm warning around madison county down around orange county. this one is going to drop a lot of rain. this area two storms. one in jefferson county moving in towards loudoun county right now. it is about to cross the border of the shenandoah river. that severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 4:45, i believe. the tornado

until 5:00. that's for berkley county, extreme eastern morgan. that storm is east of morgan county into berkley county. if you're in martinsburg, make sure you're inside your house. make sure in an interior room. this storm is going to run right down the heart of the panhandle of west virginia. heavy, heavy rain around fauquier county entering parts of prince william county. this one is going to move fairly slowly. it would not be surprised to see a lot of rain, 1 to 20 in inche rain. now the second wave is going to be this one right here. this is what i'm really concerned abo

through over the next few hours. again, most likely after 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 tonight. i really want to show you the spin in the atmosphere. look at the spin that we showed you yesterday, but look at the spin right there. it is going to move right down across our region overnight. we have some computer models giving us 2, 3, even 4 inches of rain through 7:00, 8:00 tomorrow morning. the tornado threat is low, but it's there. the high winds a high threat. hail is going to be a medium threat. heavy rain also going to be a very high threat overnight tonight. please stay with us as you move on through the rest of the evening hours tonight. 78 tomorrow. i do think most of tomorrow will be dry. tomorrow will actually turn out to be a pretty nice afternoon. the morning not so much, but tomorrow afternoon is okay. saturday and sunday looking great. plenty of sunshine for the weekend. father's day looking good too. we're going

timing. an historic photo of british royalty. >> prince william will be featured on the cover of a popular gay magazine where he talks about gay rights. >> reporter: prince william gracing the cover of a gay magazine, "attitude," something no royal has ever done before. the second in line to the throne took time out from his day job last month inviting the magazine's editor and chief and a group of young lgbt men and women to the palace. among them a transgender woman and a muslim gay man. the prince calling it an eye-opener and painful. >> he said it hurt him to hear the stories. >> reporter: prince william told the magazine no one should be bullied for their sexuality or any other reason and nobody should have to put up with the kind of hate that these young

prince diana fought to erase the stigma of aids in the 80s and 90s. william, kate, and harry are trying to do the same with mental health. this is the first time since diana that a royal has taken on an lgbt cause, even more meaningful after orlando. >> how important do you think it is prince william appears on the cover of this magazine at this time? >> i think it is really important. prince william, by doing this, has shown he is potentially an ally for the lgbt community at a time when we need it most. >> reporter: the way prince w l william puts it, it was an honor.

we just got a new report here from the national weather service. this is now a confirmed tornado on the ground near the martinsburg area. again, a confirmed tornado near martinsburg. this is just to the west of martinsburg. you can see here's the storm itself. the tornado most likely going to be in this little area right here. i want to track this out. lauryn ricketts is with me this afternoon. we want to track this down to the south and east. i'm going to put on the track. what i want to do here is show you where this is going to be going. take this track. move it on down toward the south and east at about 30 miles per hour. we'll go 30 minutes from here. that means in martinsburg at 4:38. if you live in and around martinsbu martinsburg, you need to take precautions with it. that is a storm that has rotation with it. this is a storm that has a tornado on the ground.

national weather service spotter or law enforcement. a confirmed tornado now on the ground in berkley county, west virginia. look at all the lightning with this storm. we have seen golf ball-sized hail with this storm, a tremendous amount of lightning. this is now the third tornado warning with this same storm system as it moves on down toward the right. it is a right-moving storm, which means it is moving right to the mean flow. normally this storm would be off toward the east, but it is dropping to the south to the martinsburg area. again, this could go very close to the city of martinsburg. if you live in and around martinsburg or in central portions of berkley county, this tornado warning is in effect for another hour. severe thunderstorm warning just around the 340 area.

no rotation with this one. some rotation, but not the same rotation as the storm to the north. the lightning is actually starting to decrease a little bit with this storm. this is the storm -- let's go back to the north and show you the storm that we're worried about. this that storm that has had that tornado warning for an hour and a half. now into berkley county, west virginia. this is right on top of martinsburg. let's zoom in a little bit more here. i want to zoom in right on toward martinsburg. here's hedgesville. this is part of the storm here right along -- i believe this is 11. right between hedgesville and martinsburg. the hail. the tornado will be right down into this area and does lkoo like it's going to come right through the city of martinsburg. this is a confirmed tornado. the national weather service just put out a statement at 4:23 saying this is a confirmed tornado in that area. i want to take a look a

guys, too and see exactly what we're talking about here. this is confirmed by emergency management in that area. i'm just going to read this for you. for those in the direct path of tornado touchdown, flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. damages to roofs and siding may occur. mobile homes may be damaged or destroyed. tree damage is likely with this storm. please stay with us as here as we move on through the evening hours. a very dangerous and intense storm right around the martinsburg, west virginia area. it is moving at about 30 miles per hour, i believe. it does have golf ball-sized hail also confirmed. it is now moving at 35 miles an hour. this is right around the berkley and martinsburg area. if you're in martinsburg, please, please, please get into the basement. get into an interior room of your house. make sure you're not watching out the windows. you do not want to go to the window and take a look at this. this is not soi

pictures of. this storm will move to the south and east at about 35 miles per hour. one thing we're going to be watching is is the rotation on here. as i put on the storm tracks here, you're going to notice that rotation inside the storm. that storm making its way down toward the south and east. that storm making its way in towards the martinsburg area here as we move on just down to the south and east. this is where the tornado will be coming right through martinsburg in about the next five minutes. in about the next five minutes this tornado, confirmed tornado, on the ground in and around the martinsburg area. please take precaution. get inside an interior room. make sure you are covered with this storm. make sure as many walls are between you and the outside as possible. normally that's a closet, that's a bathroom. that's something that we're going to be watching. this is the hail that's

you can see the hail with this storm. the hail core is just to the north of martinsburg. that's what i was just talking about right around the hedgesville area. if you're near hedgesville or down towards martinsburg, you're going to see golf-ball sized hail. you can see it making its way down toward the south. you can see exactly what i'm talking about with that hail core moving down towards martinsburg too. it is the tornado that we're the most worried about here. still a lot of lightning with this storm as well. the radar picking up this storm and going to continue to watch as this one moves on down toward the south and east at 35 miles an hour. on that track in through jefferson county. i would not be surprised to see this tornado warning which is going until 5:00 is extended in towards portions of jefferson

i'm going to zoom in and show you exactly what areas i'm talking about. this is what we can expect later on tonight through, even around 6:00, 7:00 around the d.c. metro area. here's martinsburg. if you live around 9 and 81, that's where the tornado is. this is going to update here in just a second. right here would be where the tornado would be. there's the update i was talking about. it's now right back toward the west right around the martinsburg area. we have a new update. this is a report of damage along route 9 of berkley springs. that was earlier this afternoon. that's reports of a tree down. we had trees down already with this storm. even if you don't have a tornado, we could see winds of 60 to 70 miles per hour with this storm right along 81, right along the route 9 area, right along 11 through martinsburg. please make sure you're inside. we're going to continue to watch this storm. i want to zoom in and go right on down wa

lauryn is on wtop. severe thunderstorm warning for loudoun county. 9 is going to be a tough drive over the next one to two hours or so. hail associated with this one too. it is moving down towards the south and east. this will be down towards leesburg in about the next hour or so. let's go back up to the tornado warning storm. i want to go right down to street level here around the martinsburg area. notice around baker heights. here's golf course road. if you live around golf course road or west king street, this is now moving in towards martinsburg. here's downtown. this storm has had a history of damaging winds upwards of 60, 70 miles per hour. it's had a history of that golf ball-sized hail. there's ag

on top of martinsburg right now. you can hear the thunder out of this storm. please make sure you continue to take precautions here. let's widen back out. i want to show you the motion of this storm. i want to widen back out a little bit longer here. i want to show this storm back about three hours. let's watch this storm from about three hours back. what's going to be happening here? this storm is coming from southern portions of pennsylvania and moving right down to the right. most everything else is moving across like this. this storm moving down to the right. that shows we have rotation with this storm. that rotation coming down, coming down, coming down right on into berkley county, west virginia. on that track, we'll continue to watch it through jefferson county, in through loudoun county. very close to leesburg in the next hour or so as well. that was the warning we saw a little bit earlier. let's go back to the west a little bit more. i want to show you what's going on back towards pittsburgh. this is that next storm.

notice one, two, three storms. now we're starting to see these supercell thunderstorms form back to our west, around morgantown. those are still well back to our west, but those are the ones that are going to impact just about everybody. that's why we're in weather alert mode. back to the martinsburg storm, we're going to continue to watch on that one. severe thunderstorm warning in effect for jefferson county and loudoun county. the tornado warning in effect until 5:00 for the martinsburg region. i'm going to send it back to you for just a minute. i'm going to see if we can get any more reports on this. i'll be back with you guys in just a couple of minutes. >> doug, i think one of the things we're wondering is i'm sort of struck by the dichotomy between all that red and yellow that we're seeing there on your radar and then sort of the

immediate area here in d.c. you mentioned that this storm is pushing not just east, but down. do you think it's still going to pack that same punch by the time it gets into virginia? >> we had the cloud cover and rain earlier this morning. then you take the sun and it puts that moisture back into the atmosphere. you need a trigger. we've got the trigger. we've got this storm that's moving on down to the south and east. i do expect these to continue right on in through northern virginia over the next couple of hours. i'm seeing a little less rotation possibly here, but i'm still seeing very strong winds. we'll see if we're going to see a new warning in towards jefferson county. i bet this put this out any second now. i wouldn't be surprised to see a warning for extreme berkley county and jefferson county. this is right over

put on the storm tracks, lauryn. any time you have that warm atmosphere, all you need is that trigger later on and we have that. we just put on the storm tracks. notice down to the south we're looking at rotation here, but up to the north and west not as much rotation here. maybe that's some good news as it is coming through martinsburg possibly weakening a bit. put the lightning back on too. the lightning is also a telltale signal of what this storm is doing. is it strengthening? is it weakweakening? this storm could be trying to redevelop. i'm waiting on a new warning. you'll hear the beep any second i'm sure within the next couple of minutes as that storm moves down to the south and east. it is not just the tornado warning i'm worried about. it is the extreme

issued either for a tornado or a severe thunderstorm warning. with less rotation, this is now a severe thunderstorm warning. no longer a tornado warning. that tells us that the weather service is not seeing the rotation anymore. that's very good news. this tornado was on the ground north and east of martinsburg. may have just missed martinsburg. may have gone back up and now just becoming a thunderstorm. you can actually see the way this is looking. i want to show you what this is doing here. a severe thunderstorm warning most likely in effect until 5:15. this is 5:15 for eastern berkley county, including martinsburg, and all of jefferson county, west virginia, even southern extreme portions of washington county right around the warriorsville area, along 340 charlestown. this is going to have winds of 60, 70 miles an hour. martinsburg starting to get on the eastern side of this. that's what we're going to continue to watch too. now earlier it had a storm to the north and a little bit of a hook a

now it is linear. because of that, i know this is bringing us some strong wind. that's what we're going to continue to see down to the south. it still has a little notch here. we'll see what that is, but this is no longer a tornado warning. this is a severe thunderstorm warning for berkley county and jefferson county until 5:30. a big storm along 15 towards fredericksbu fredericksburg. we're just getting started. here's the line i'm worried about. we'll continue to you keep you posted right here from the storm center. >> indeed we are. we have a tornado warning in effect for the martinsburg area. douis trackingg

heavy rain, gusting winds, even a confirmed twister. in fact, a tornado warning just expired for parts of the panhandle in west virginia. >> we are in weather alert mode still this afternoon as showers and storms pop up on storm team 4 radar. >> it's really two threats we're tracking as we get into the evening. let's get right over to doug in the storm center. what are you looking at now? >> right now we're tracking the scattered thunderstorms out of main system here. the warm front is around our region. look at these storms up to the north. this is the strongest storm that we have seen up towards

another severe thunderstorm warning just issued including fredericksburg. that until 5:30. we have one strong storm in the leesburg area. this one is moving down to the south and east. no longer a severe storm, but it will have winds of 40, 50 miles per hour. that storm no longer a tornado warning, but a severe thunderstorm warning for berkley and jefferson county. that one until 5:30. winds potentially of 80 miles per hour. 80 miles per hour with this storm and ping-pong ball-sized hail. more storms developing here too. down to the south, tracking this storm, which was over the warrenton area producing 2 inches of rain per hour is now towards the fredericksburg area. fredericksburg, spotsylvania county, southern

county. now it is moving a little bit faster. the wider view showing what's coming. this is the start of what is going to be an extremely stormy night. there's a new tornado warning, but this one back towards portions of west virginia. it is not in our area, but it just goes to show you the intense line. in this line right now that will be here around 7:00, 8:00, 9:00 hour. we're going to be looking at the flash flood warning. there are flash flood warnings in pittsburgh. there are severe thunderstorm warnings all across that region. these are individual supercells making their way toward us. stafford county, northern spotsylvania county, extreme southern fauquier

prince george's county severe thunderstorm warning until 5:30. golf ball-sized hail with this. trees down. another storm around the leesburg area. we're going to continue to watch what's happening now and of course watch what's going to be happening throughout the rest of the evening. we're going to keep you posted right here from the storm center. we'll be the first to tell them to you. we're following some tragic developments in london. police say a british lawmaker joe cox died today after being shot and stabbed in broad daylight. this happened on the street in northern england. cox was holding a meeting in an area that she represents. witnesses say there were a scuffle between two men. one of them pulled a gun and a knife from his bag and attacked her. authorities are trying to find out why. cox was 41 years old. she was just elected last

kids. the gun debate is top of mind again after the orlando shooting here in the washington area. guns once used to commit violent crimes are now being turned into art. d.c. police have created a program called guns to roses. darcy spencer explains how it works. >> reporter: teenagers wearing helmets weld metal outside the earth conservation core in southwest d.c., but this isn't just any metal. they're working with guns that have been rendered safe. >> the firearms and the guns that were once used as a tool of violence in the city are now being used in a productive way. >> reporter: 32 kids are in the program. this project is called guns to roses. guns are melted down and then turned into flowers and other art. the program is meant to build bridges between police and young people. officer samuel gaines says he's

program. talking about a new severe thunderstorm warning. this one is for loudoun county. loudoun county and extreme southern portions of montgomery county. this storm, we were watching it earlier. now it is starting to fire up again. just to the south of leesburg right along 15 here. i expect some very strong winds. 60 mile and hour winds. this is the storm that had the tornado earlier. no longer a tornado warning. both of these storms 5:30. that's exactly right. then down to the south this storm was just a rainmaker earlier, but now i'm watching this very closely. now it has rotation associated with it. it is only a severe thunderstorm warning now, but this is one i'm sure the weather service is looking at very closely. this one is coming towards fredericksburg. severe

a line of storms move through and that is going to effect everyone. right now we have three severe thunderstorm warnings in effect. we have one down towards fredericksburg. stafford county. another one around leesburg. severe thunderstorm warning there. then the one that spawned a tornado right along route 9 around martinsburg. let's see what this is. i knew this was coming. a tornado warning now in effect for the spotsylvania county area around fredericksburg. stop that for me. hit the now button there. look at what's going on around fredericksbu fredericksburg. a tornado warning now in effect for spotsylvania county. it does include the city of fredericksburg. i'm going to zoom on in here, but i think it will go just down to the west of fredericksburg. i don't think fredericksburg will be in this, but it is until 5:45. and this storm right now really a classic storm as far as the
