6:00 pm
we have seen some reports of an inch to 2 inches. maryland picked up half an inch to an inch in hagerstown just about daybreak. lots of lightning. if you are in that line of storms, you want to go ahead and make sure that you are going to be all right and go ahead and get inside. we've got about another three hours or so before that moves our direction. we'll watch for that next line. let me show you what's going on right now. that one in fredericksburg moving tomove ing out to the northern neck. we have that severe thunderstorm watch just to the south of fredericksburg and the north of bolling green. then here's that storm. look at that rotation just around bluemont right now. what did you say, guys? we've got
6:01 pm
looking at fredericksburg. wow, look at that. was that just recently? that's chopper 4 live. there it is right there. thanks, doug. look at that rain coming down right there. you can see it. this is just again around the fredericksburg area where that cell that i showed you that is weakening a little bit and moving into the northern neck. that's the same cell that we're watching. showing you the live pictures from our chopper 4. now i can hear another warning going off right now. we'll have to see what that is. the current temperatures right now still very, very warm out there. temperature at 83 here in washington. doug, what is that warning? >> i'll tell you what that is. this is what i'm talking about. let's go back to max two guys and go to the area that i want to show you. that whole line back to the west, that is now a severe thunderstorm warning for hampshire county, morgan county, washington county, allegheny county. a
6:02 pm
moving our way. every county associated with that line there is now a severe thunderstorm warning for until 7:30. my interns helping me with this information to get this out to you as fast as we can. you have the tornado warning right through the border of loudoun county and clark county. there it is right here, making its way off towards the east. i'm going to put this into play mode. what we're going to be watching with that possible tornado is winds easily 60, 70, 80 miles per hour with that. what we're looking at with this -- i'm just going to move back to the west because we're going to see a lot more storms develop out ahead of this. there's that line. every county associated with it now has a severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 7:30. until 30
6:03 pm
for 45 minutes. this one is put out an hour and a half. that's how dangerous this line of storms is. national weather service wants you to really be prepared. severe thunderstorms near frostburg toward western points. winds of 60 miles an hour. i am not expecting 90 mile an hour winds. we're not going to see that kind of damage. i don't want you to be too worried about it, but i want you to think about your evening tonight and what's going to be happening here. this is going to be damaging winds that could cause trees to fall. roadways may become blocked by downed trees. we could see the potential for flash flooding. notice you have a little bit of a spin here. any time y
6:04 pm
have a couple of factors. by the way, tornado warning just dropped. just dropped with this storm. very good news there. no longer seeing that rotation. if we can zoom back in, we're no longer seeing that hook echo that we saw a little bit earlier too. we'll zoom back in on that. that is i-68 at savage mountain. you can see that right there. extremely heavy rain along i-68. that's going to be our roads later this evening. don't go out. no longer that hook echo around bluemont. extremely heavy rain and hail associated with it. >> these storms get their power from the sun. wouldn't that suggest that after 8:30 tonight those storms to our west are going to get weaker? >> not with this, jim. not with this. i'm not comparing this to
6:05 pm
mile-an-hour winds. as that moves through, even after the sun goes down, there's enough energy out ahead of it to keep that line going through 9:00, 10:00 tonight. >> we have a long night coming up ahead of us. >> we really do. you notice the severe thunderstorm warnings associated with this through 7:30. guys, i'm sorry. another tornado warning. they took it down and put it back up. loudoun county, northern fauquier county and western portions of clark county. jim, to more of your question earlier. watch what happens when i move out here. notice this spin in the atmosphere. we talked about this yesterday. that spin is going to give these storms enough strength to move on through here throughout the
6:06 pm
i'm going to go back to that tornado warning storm back in towards loudoun county. i'll show you where this tornado warning is. loudoun county, northern fauquier. get me a time, guys. 6:45. a tornado warning in effect for loudoun county, northern fauquier county including marshall and northern prince william county. i want to pick out some towns to really watch out for. if you're around middleburg, take precaution. get inside your home. if you're in a mobile home, it may be a good idea to leave that mobile home as this storm system moves on through. this has had a history of damage in that region, so please watch out and make sure you're warned by this storm. i expect numerous storms to develop in this region. you can see them happening. like i was just talking about, i expect storms to fire up. there they are. there they are right there. these storms could become
6:07 pm
now we have a tornadic supercell. we have more storms developing in and around loudoun county. we've already had one around round hill that did have some damage to trees. we've seen upwards of 60, 70 mile an hour winds with those. make sure your cell phones are charged. watch out for this line of as it moves on through. look at the lightning. just incredible amounts of lightning. this one moving down at about 45 miles per hour now. i'm going to time that line out for us as we move on down through the rest of the evening hours. i'll make sure i get my timing right here. we're looking about two hours making its way on
6:08 pm
with that thunderstorm that is in through parts of loudoun county, we could have hail up to two inches in diameter. we could have winds upwards of 60 to 70 miles an hour. that's something we're goingo continue to watch as we move on through next couple of hours. tornado warning. this is one of many that we've seen, these tornado warnings that have popped up here. tornado warning in effect for loudoun county, fauquier county, extreme western portions of prince william county including the marshall region. this one moving just south of bluemont. we have kind of lost rotation. it's probably still there a little bit. it is definitely still there. now we're getting closer to the radar. the closer to the radar we are, the better the national weather service feels about putting out these warnings. they can see the winds a little bit better. if there is a tornado warning this close to the radar, you know we're dealing with some rotation here.
6:09 pm
along route 50. jim and doreen, we talked about this storm system coming through yesterday, but this one that will be here throughout the night. >> i have a question about that. when you talk about tornado warning like the one you said is in loudoun county right now, does that mean somebody has spotted a tornado on the ground? is that what that means? >> most likely with this one. this one is radar indicated. the radar is telling us there is that rotation within the cloud. we had the one earlier in martinsburg that was confirmed by emergency management. they were able to put that out and say a tornado has been confirmed. this one is not a confirmed tornado, but it is radar indicated, meaning we do have that rotation here. once again i'm going to show you what's going on with these storms. notice how these storms here that are just popping up are moving west to east. west to east.
6:10 pm
notice where this one is going. it is southeast. that is right of the line. this storm has some rotation. that tornado warning going until 6:30 tonight, loudoun county, northern fauquier county, and western portions of prince william county. >> i'm thinking about all the people to the east of there who are trying to make decisions about whether to pick somebody up or what to do. can you give us a timeline? you said about two hours before it gets to the district. what about outer parts of montgomery county, prince george's county, east of i-95? wh what are those folks looking at? >> around the beltway, we're fine. if you're just getting home from work, no problems with weather around the beltway. it is back to the west that we're seeing this. i'm going to go ahead and time this out for you. let's
6:11 pm
i'll go nice and wide for you. i'll put on the storm tracks here. as we look at this moving at about 45 miles per hour, this whole line will make it in here about the 8:00, 9:00 hour. let me just make sure i'm looking at the right thing. yep, here we go. move it towards d.c. you're talking about getting in towards places like hagerstown at around 6:58. frederick at 7:25. gaithersburg 7:50. in d.c. metro region right around 8:00 tonight and baltimore at 8:30. make sure if you do have somebody to pick up -- let's say you weren't going to pick them up until 8:30. pick them up earlier. if you're not home by 7:30 in warrenton, you're going to have some p
6:12 pm
gaithersburg, you're going to have some problems. >> go get yourself a glass of water or a cup of tea while we share some pictures of what's been going on today. these are pictures from the west virginia area. i'm going to assume out of morgan county or berkley county area where some severe weather has already come through. some big winds out that way. also a tornado warning out in that area earlier today. >> very ominous looking pictures from west virginia earlier today. >> doug, what do you have? >> you see that going on out there. i saw one picture that had a wall cloud and scud. you see a lot too. a storm moves in and they have those clouds
6:13 pm
these storms making tir way through loudoun county. i want to zoom in on this. if you're near leesburg, you have already seen some rain tonight. now we're seeing some really heavy rain just south and east. if you're in leesburg, this tornado warning does not include you. it does include just south and east of bluemont. this possible tornado is about to cross over route 50 from loudoun county in towards northern portions of fauquier county. middleburg, if you're in and around middleburg, once again get indoors. get in an interior room. if you're in a mobile home, get out of it and get into a structure. we have extremely strong winds with this. we have a lot of hail with this. hail could be upwards of two inches. that's bigger than golf ball-sized hail. if you're around middleburg -- i'm going to zoom i
6:14 pm
time. atoka, middleburg, that's where this storm is coming. that's where i really want you to be on the lookout. make sure you're inside. make sure you're taking care of yourself. that's the area that we're going to be watching. i want to put the hail back on. anytime you see the purple, that's where you get your hail core. the hail core is just to the north where the possible tornado is right along 50. that hail core is going to be moving down. i want to zoom in on that. the heaviest hail will be right around leiftown. i hope i'm saying that correctly. then back down toward the south. lauren ricke lauryn ricketts has been working on some stuff as well.
6:15 pm
has went ahead and tweeted out there could be a possible tornado headed towards upperville and middleburg in loudoun county. we are looking at a possible tornado in that area. if you are in that area, you want to go ahead and get inside because -- seek shelter because there could be a tornado on the ground. it could be rain wrapped. go ahead and seek shelter right now. we saw a lot of trees down just around the round hill area. possible tornado may have come through that area. this storm has a history of producing severe weather and severe winds knocking trees down, possibly creating some power outages. take cover in this tornado warning. thas
6:16 pm
we have a lot more to look for as we head into really the evening, late evening hours. this will move our way. this line of storms, you can see ahead of it severe thunderstorm warnings in west virginia right now. this is a line of storms that is going to be here in just about two hours and 45 minutes, here in the d.c. metro area. in areas to the west, it will continue to travel pretty fast. we do have some history of this creating some flash flooding conditions. we have a flash flood watch up until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. we'll continue to watch that. this is a storm earlier in fredericksburg now drifting off to the northern neck. some rotation already in this storm right now. it continues to move to the southeast. you can see just along route 50 upperville, middleburg, seek shelter. marshall, i-66, even
6:17 pm
lynden, you could see some heavy rain and severe wind. we have another thunderstorm right there. that one just to the south in warren county along i-66. a lot of lightning associated with these storms. one of those could actually produce a tornado if there isn't anything on the ground already. 7:30 when we start to see that line of storms. this could be strong at times. we'll continue to see this move along i-81. again from hagerstown all the way down to harrisonburg. there could be some hail in that. this is 7:30. just a little over an hour from now. that is going to continue to move east dropping some heavy rain. we have a lot of moisture in the air. that flash flood
6:18 pm
until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. if you're headed out and about tonight, i strongly advise against it. do not drive across any flooded roadways and tomorrow morning. there could be some road closures by tomorrow morning as well. we're going to continue to see some rain through the overnight. since it will be dark, that sun going down just about 8:30, we could have some flooded roadways. you don't know how much water is there and people tend to get stuck. we have seen that over and over and over again. this is 9:15. it starts to fizzle out as that low pressure slips off the coast. some spotty showers tomorrow morning for your commute. we could have some spotty showers around for tomorrow morning as you make your way into work.
6:19 pm
this threat will be over by time we head into noon tomorrow. temperatures right now 82. we have rain cooled back to the north and west. temperatures will fall tonight. we're not getting out of the 70s tomorrow. once we get through this, we'll be looking fabulous. it is father's day weekend. we're looking good for that. i still want to mention that we still have that tornado warning going into our area. it is also impacting loudoun county and going into prince william county and clark county and central fauquier county. that goes until 9:45. here's the storm. radar indicated some rotation. we haven't seen any reports of any tornados yet, but this is radar indicated. doug? >> we'll go back to max two guys because i want to show something else with this storm here too. this storm is a monster storm right now coming through loudoun
6:20 pm
county. again here's the warning. it clouds loudoun county, extreme northwestern prince william, and central fauquier. this is crossing over route 50 as you make your way out from dulles airport. that is an area that is going to be hit fairly hard here. not just the possibility of a tornado here. very large hail. this is what i'm talking about. i wanted to show that. look at the hail core. 3.8 inch hail by the radar. that tells us there is baseball to softball-sized hail potentially with this storm. that has been reported right through middleburg. middleburg coming in with that hail. that hail could be close to baseball-sized hail. that will definitely dent your car and break some windshields. don't try to get o
6:21 pm
protect your car. you are much more valuable than your car. let it go. if you are south of it, you may have time to move it into a garage. don't go out if you see it in your area. here's the line of storms. you notice the severe thunderstorm warning which is still in effect until 7:30 tonight. that includes everybody back here towards west virginia and everybody towards portions of maryland too. that's the line that will continue to make its way on through here as we move on through the rest of the night. the biggest storm that we continue to watch is right through portions of loudoun county right through northern fauquier county. for some reason, my computer has frozen up. this is something i'm going to watch. guys, my computer has just crashed. i'm going to go back to you guys in the studio for just a second. >> we want to emphasize a point about the
6:22 pm
lauryn are offering people about tornados in the area, whether they are radar indicated or spotted on the ground. we're both recollecting 15 years or so ago where we did not have the technology that is available now. none of the meteorologists was able to pinpoint and warn people in southern maryland. >> laplatta area. a lot of damage, fatalities. it took months and months to recover from that indeed. technology is so much for sophisticated now even than it was then. >> the point being of course when they talk about this take them seriously and do take all the protocols and the precautions necessary that are associated with keeping yourself safe
6:23 pm
we apparently are going to have some heavy weather coming our way. doug is telling us 8:30, 9:00, beyond that. tonight it is going to get a little rough out here. we're inside in a cave. i don't know if the sun is still shining. when we came in here 20 minutes ago -- >> it was great. >> -- it was a wonderful day outside. >> i'm shocked by what doug just said about the hail reported in middleburg area. baseball-sized, 2.5 inches. that's a lot. that's not anything to mess around with. >> if it will dent a metal roof on your car, imagine what it would do to your head. advancvance, i'm here at th desk. we've been getting tons of video and photos in of these strong storms that have been moving in.
6:24 pm
now. what you're about to see is video of a funnel cloud. this was the one that doug and lauryn have been talking about. it moved through martinsburg, west virginia. this is a still photo obviously right behind that shopping center. there you're taking a look at some of the damage that has been done. you can take a look at some of the hail that came down on the porch. that's in hedgesville, west virginia. all of this is tracking that line that doug has been talking about. again, now we're getting real visual evidence of not only what that twister looked like, but also the hail on the ground and some of the damage that's been done. jim, doreen? >> we appreciate that and we
6:25 pm
appreciate the fact this is some serious and heavy weather coming our way. do not overlook the fact of the high water doug and lauryn are warning us about as well. flash flood warnings to the west of us, which might be anticipated in our area as well. take that seriously. as the slogan goes, turn around and don't drown. by way, we saw some pictures of heavy weather out there in morgan county. in anybody up around river ridge, where my place is, can get out, let me know if my house is still standing, okay? i'd appreciate that. >> but be careful getting out there. we were talking a minute ago about the awful tornado in laplatta, maryland, in april of 2002. you were pretty close. >> is your computer up
6:26 pm
>> i have one computer that is broken and one that is working fine. that tornado warning still in effect through portions of fauquier county, northeastern portions of prince william county and southern portions of loudoun county. that tornado warning is in effect until 6:45. we're still watching that line back to the west. here is the potential tornado right around middleburg. we have already seen really large hail reported in middleburg. get down to the basement. get into a closet. get into a bathroom. that tornado warning is very close to the radar. the weather service sees that rotation. we continue to see it right over route 50 here. a lot of lightning associated with this storm. back to the west, here's the line that's going to be making its way on through here. this is
6:27 pm
not quite as defined. but once it moves across the mountains, we could see it redefine itself and continue. that's why every single county associated with the line is under a severe thunderstorm warning. hampton, morgan, allegheny county. it is these storms out ahead of it that have the tornados. the one around martinsburg, that was a confirmed tornado. we have had numerous areas of damage. we continue to see that. back to that storm around middleburg, look at the hook. look at the hook just south of middleburg. it is now just passing middleburg. don't go outside just yet. you're going through the hail core right now. i want to put this hail on. i want to see just how big this hail is in this area. golf ball-sized hail has been reported. look at this.
6:28 pm
three-inch hail. that is about tennis ball-sized hail. in middleburg, around four-inch hail. that is baseball and softball-sized hail. do not step outside. do not try to protect your car if you're in middleburg. that being said, if you're down around 15, this is gieoing to ce your way. you still have time to move that car inside if you can. maybe put a blanket on top. it will probably blow away, but you might get some protection now. if you see the rain and hear the thunder, do not go outdoors. if the thunder roars, go
6:29 pm
indoors. turn around, don't drown. very large hail, extremely heavy rain and that possible tornado that would be right here. i'm going to zoom on in to see if we can see anything. i can't do that here. as we move on through, one thing we're going to be watching for sure is the potential for strong winds. watch around halfway. that tornado, if it was there, would be right here in this little knot, right in there. that's where our tornado would be. it is moving down toward the south and east. if you're in and around halfway, it is going to be very, very close to you and very close to your region. a dramatic system. look at this, guys. this is an incredible amount of lightning making its way our way. so many of you have asked -- as i step away to catch my breath -- so many of you i'm
6:30 pm
finding on my twitter page and facebook page asking about the 90 mile an hour winds. we're not going to see 70, 80, 90 mile an hour winds everywhere. could we see some? yes, we could. we have this severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 7:30, but this is moving so fast. we may get another one very quickly, which includes the i-81 corridor and the shenandoah valley. we're trying to get our other computer back up. i'm going to throw it you guys for just a second. tracking that storm just south of the leesburg area now moving into towards northern fauquier. >> hot tea works, doug. look at that sky. look at that sky. that is from chopper 4. they're pointing the camera towards loudoun
6:31 pm
nature and weather are marvelous. they can be scary, but the beauty of it is just as incredible as whatever dangers might be inherent in those storms. >> this camera is aimed toward loudoun county. if you're in prince george's county or prince william county or in the district and you're thinking it looks okay so far, this is headed your way. doug is expecting this line of storms to be in d.c. by about 8:00 tonight. it'll be in gaithersburg more like 7:30 tonight. beware. it is coming your way.
6:32 pm
pilot some props. if i was in the sky and i saw something like that within my view, i'd want to put that thing on the ground right away. marvelous picture from chopper 4, looking out toward loudoun county. the weather where you are might be delightful at the time. the storm is coming our way. apparently it is a large and powerful storm stretching many, many miles north to south and all of us at some point or another are going to get hit and hit pretty hard by that thing. again a picture of loudoun county. that's where they're looking at there. that's what all of us in fairfax and montgomery and prince george's county likely might see at some point before this day is over. i'm nearly color
6:33 pm
i can't tell you all the colors, but there's a bunch of them in there. >> there's a little bit of blue sky. we do have some pictures, some video from earlier. this is from west virginia. these are pictures that have been shared with us of the heavy weather as it moves through west virginia. we believe there may have been a tornado in west virginia. still waiting for confirmation on that, but heavy rains and hail. look at those ominous clouds. that's all those pictures from earlier in west virginia. >> in morgan county and berkley county and washington county and the western part of maryland as well. you've got some more for us? >> i've got some more for you. we still find that tornado warning right there shaded in red. national weather service just
6:34 pm
reported in that. that's definitely enough to damage your car. we have seen some pictures on twitter, even out of clark county, of damaged cars from hail that might be smaller than the baseball-sized hail that's being reported in middleburg. if you're in middleburg and not inside already, get inside. look at this. this is one heck of a storm right there. that tornado warning goes until 6:45. you have another 11 minutes or so. we'll to have to see if that extend that south and east. look at all that lightning that is being produced by that cell. now you can see not a lot more going on around the d.c. area. we have a few showers in northern fauquier county just north of warrenton right around i-66. that's where the sweet spot tends to be right now.
6:35 pm
fairfax county and then headed all way back towards royal. these are the storms we'll continue to stay on. you can see what is shaded yellow in west virginia. those are severe thunderstorms already. already creating a lot of lightning out there. if you haven't had a storm yet and you are in our area, go ahead and get those kids inside. go ahead and come inside. you want to go ahead and revise your plans for this evening because this line is headed our way. it is knocking on the shenandoah valley's door right now. it will continue to move east into d.c. now we have seen some rotation in that as well. we'll have to continue to watch that to see if any more tornado watches or warnings pop up
6:36 pm
is the severe thunderstorm watch. that goes until 10:00 p.m. tonight. we're going to continue to watch this until the threat is over just to keep you safe. doug and i will be here. we have our interns that will all continue to watch it for you. we still have that tornado warning right there. here's the radar right now. you can see baseball-sized hail. the national weather service has said there is baseball-sized hail around middleburg. wrap your head around that for a minute. thursday 8:00 p.m., you can see the line right now. this was the line in west virginia. that continues to move to the east. we have some heavy rain. we have a flash flood watch pretty much for everybody until 5:00, 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. we could have some flash flooding. again, i keep mentioning this. don't drive across any flooded roadways. i've seen that too many times throughout my
6:37 pm
people don't realize how deep it is until it is too late. we have a lot of water rescues around that time when we get these storms. the sun going down in about two hours. you won't be able to see how deep that water is. please, please, please don't do that. here's 8:00 p.m. heavy rain, even some hail. definitely some damaging winds. we're going to continue to see some rain showers overnight. nothing like we're seeing out there right now. we have another alert. we'll continue to see some scattered showers as we go through early tomorrow morning until about 5:00, 6:00 a.m. let me give this back to doug. >> we're going to take a look at max two right now. this is some really good news again. just like the other storms, now a tornado warning that was here
6:38 pm
this is very close to the radar. very close to dulles airport right now. extremely heavy rain along route 50 and 66. national weather service, they're extending the severe thunderstorm warning. what time is that until? most likely until about 7:15. we're watching that very closely here, very closely around 66. we may not have rotation anymore. that's why they haven't continued the tornado warning. it's still in effect here until 6:45. 6:45 tornado warning. severe thunderstorm warning inuding the city of manassas and haymarket and fairfax county until 7:30 tonight. that is that same storm that has produced some incredible hail. we have reports of baseball-sized hail with this. loudoun county, starting to move out of lauten county. right along 50, if you're south
6:39 pm
that i'm going to watching very closely as we move on through the rest of the night tonight. the severe thunderstorm warning encompasses loudoun county, manassas -- if you live in and around manassas, get ready. this will be in your area in half an hour to 45 minutes. this storm means business. it has a history of damaging winds and baseball-sized hail. this is an extremely dangerous storm. get inside. here's your hail core. hail upwards of 3 to 4 inches. that's over baseball-sized hail. we're looking at that storm in through fairfax county. i'm going to read this to you. severe thunderstorm warning in effect for fairfax county, prince william county, that
6:40 pm
this storm moving at about 25 miles per hour. we've had the history of baseball size. now the weather service saying tennis ball-sized hail. that will still dent your car. then we have the line developing back to the west. you see all the lightning associated with this. you also see this area that just formed. watch this. that's the area of low pressure that's formed ahead of this. we've got the line. now we're seeing another line form. we may see more storms fire in this area back toward the shenandoah valley. would not be surprised to see that warning extended off toward the east. it is this storm right here. notice all these moving from west to east. this guy moving south and east, making a right turn here. we could a
6:41 pm
way of damage associated with that one as we move on through the rest of the night. saw a little bit in the way of shower activity and rain early. then we saw the sun come out. that sun helped to aid and fuel the storms that were out there, give the atmosphere a little bit of energy. then we have seen the storms develop. look at this storm. see that storm that came through fredericksbu fredericksburg? look at the cirrus clouds. look at how far the cirrus clouds extend from delaware in towards that storm. that area of low pressure just spinning up to the north and west making it way on through the region. the severe weather risk that we're dealing with, the tornado threat is real. i think the tornado threat will start to wane as we get that line moving in here. high winds for sure. hail has been a big threat. heavy rain has been a big threat.
6:42 pm
6:00, the line just back to the west, but 8:00 it is already across the blue ridge moving in towards the d.c. metro area. this is probably a little slow. northern virginia is going to get hit the hardest with this later this evening. i've been telling you that for the last cup of days. loudoun county, fairfax county, fauquier county, prince william county. that's when that line is going to come through. we could see extremely heavy rain associated with that. jim and doreen, i'm going to through it back to you guys for a couple of minutes while we continue to look at the latest updates from this storm system moving in. >> we have some pictures. our viewers are very productive and on point. this is one that was sent to us from loudoun county in the round hill area. you can see a tree down. looks like it collapsed on top of a car. big winds apparently coming through round hill, virginia. a
6:43 pm
