worst damage. >> now the hail and tornado threat is out of here, heavy rain and the threat of flash flooding are sticking around. storm team 4 radar showing a line of storms as it moves east. >> we have team coverage tonight from the damage on the ground to the big delays at our major airports. >> we start with doug ckammerer. >> what an evening. from 4:00 to 8:00 we were under the gun as the severe weather moved through. just about every county in northern virginia was under a severe thunderstorm warning and numerous tornado warnings and it kept going. >> we had tons of severe weather reports, hail and wind and you saw it but the threat is dying down. >> that's the good news. still dealing with rain. look at storm team 4 radar. we saw the line come through. ahead of that line we saw individual super cells moving

through. those spawned tornado warnings in west virginia where we saw a confirmed tornado earlier. one that came through parts of the middleburg area to the south. another tornado warning in fredericksburg. now you can see no more reds or oranges, except to the south southern st. mary's county but everybody in the yellows. that is moderate rain in southern maryland. wider view showing the storm system continuing to move to the south and east. the main storm itself is still around pittsburgh. this has to go through. because of that we are under a flash flood watch for the area through early tomorrow morning. the storm brought a lot! severe weather. >> if you were out an about in the region you had a good chance of seeing severe weather. we had wind damage, large hail and as that line moved through the area, everybody got in a little bit on the action. you can see these were the storm

over 200 storm reports in our region. most of them wind damage but a lot of hail. thunderstorm wood damage in woodsly and prince william county. 6:45 is when the storms were moving in and numerous trees down, a lot of trees down around the region. a lot of them on cars. and then we had golf ball size hail reported in middleburg. we even had reports of tennis ball-size hail and possibly baseball-size hail. large hail coming through with the storms but middleburg got the brunt of it. that's with we find shomari stone. >> reporter: there was so much golf ball-size hail, you have to look at this car right here that is damaged here with the windshield, move a little down and look at this hood. tow trucks tonight are working around the clock. they are so busy that this car has been sitting here for 2 1/2

have never seen hail like this before. >> reporter: rain and hail pounds middleburg, virginia. how would you describe the storm? >> very intense. >> reporter: leslie was on hold with her car insurance company. the golf ball-size hail pounded her car and shattered the back windshield. >> what's your reaction? >> i was shocked when i came out here. it is bad enough it is all dented but the windshield was gone. >> reporter: several cars are damaged on route 50. ice covers the sidewalk. a line of thunderstorms with gusts snapped trees. this one leans on a power line. hundreds in the dark, others put down sandbags. >> the water level was a foot deep. >> this woman stopped the flooding at her vet clinic. >> we have ice on the ground. >> she's not kidding. i practiced my bad swing

power to your home. one of our followers tweeted this video. he's been stuck on a plane at reagan national for hours and he's not alone. take a look at the planes stacked up on the tarmac. earlier tonight when a full ground stop was in effect, it was lifted a while ago, and delays are still two hours plus. nearly 50 flights have been cancelled at dulles and reagan national. some flights that were supposed to believe at 6:00 won't be taking off until well after midnight. the power outages haven't been as bad as other storms. right now dominion is reporting 13,000 to 14,000 people without power in virginia. pepco 1700 customers out. most of them in prince georges county. the hardest-hit area is richmond where over 120,000 people are still without power. at the live desk, i'm chris lawrence. look at the scene earlier tonight outside of our

the south but the rain still very heavy at times. >> megan fitzgerald saw the rain and lightning as she drove through fairfax county tonight. she's live with the situation. very we have been driving around the last several hours and have been seeing the heavy rain and lightning and at times the thunder. at this point, it looks like the heaviest part of the storm moved out. look at the roadways here to give you an idea what road conditions look like. right now, we're on the outer loop, or on the beltway, heading to silver spring. this is a stark contrast from what we saw within the last hour. the rain let up significantly. as doug mentioned, flash flooding around the area will be a concern over the next few hours. we also want to give you a look at what things looked like at the height of the storm around 8:00 in fairfax. the storm

seeing frequent flashes of lightning in the sky. the storm stuck around for a few minutes and then the rain started to die down. the fact of the matter is roads are still slick. of course anybody who's going to be heading to work early in the morning should take it slow. back to you. >> thank you so much. safe travels out there. some of the most severe weather came this afternoon when a first wave of storms spawned this confirmed tornado in martinsburg, west virginia. you can see the funnel cloud in these pictures and video. it is unclear if the twister caused any damage. >> the first round of storms did some significant damage in round hill, virginia. you can see from this video sent to us on twitter that several large trees came down. one of them on top of a car. you can have the forecast in the palm of your hand with our nbc washington app. we are updating it throughout the night. you can also find a photo gallery with some of the best pictures o

person, any person with any moral obligation would do. i felt it was the rite thing to do. >> reporter: we finally know who the good samaritans were who rushed in to help a bus load of strangers after their shuttle bus crashed head on with a car on the gw parkway on tuesday. it is believed their actions saved lives. >> went to the victims and started to render aid. >> reporter: army first sergeant 3ptjuhp'd gracie vaughn stationed at ft. belvoir, both driving home in different cars. three bus passengers were pinned under the bus. >> we had to push and initially when we tried to push the bus it slid a couple of feet, and then we were like, no, we have to lift up. she's still under the bus. >> sergeant cooper and three other passersby tried again. >> this time it seemed like the bus didn't weigh anything.

>> reporter: at that moment, sergeant vaughn got there and tried to help a woman who had been pinned. it reminded her of helping the wounded in a combat hospital in baghdad. so she knew the woman wouldn't survive. >> it was sad. to me it shows how precious life is. life can end at any moment. >> reporter: the soldiers say they were acting on their moral duty and adrenaline. in fairfax county, kristin wright, news 4. two people are held without bond in alexandria tonight for what prosecutors say is an identity theft ring that could involve thousands of victims and millions of dollars. two people allegedly posted job listings on craigslist and asked applicants for driver's licenses, passports and social security numbers. they said they allegedly used that personal information to set up shell companies and advertise cheap travel deals on-line using

credit cards to pay for the travel. prosecutors say that the pair overbilled an ashburn company $2.5 million. another hearing is set for next week. turning to the weather now, doug, things could have been worse for us tonight, but it's not over yet. >> that's right. still seeing rain across parts of the area, especially southern maryland. the heaviest storms to the south around richmond and norfolk. we're not done yet. more rain from the storm system will move through the area overnight tonight. flood watch in effect until 6:00 tomorrow morning. what's coming in next, the forecast and everything you need

people who live in florida know to keep children away from ponds and lakes because of the threat of alligators. a 2-year-old nebraska boy was dragged and drowned at the grand floridian resort. disney posted no swimming signs near the lagoon but disney is keeping beaches closed as it reviews protocol. the family issued a statement saying they are shocked, devastated and grateful to the people who searched for their son. once again today,ç preside obama traveled to a city hit by tragedy and tried to comfort survivors and victims family members. after meeting with those affected in orlando, the president and vice president bid bide layed

memorial. barack obama repeated calls for stricter gun controls. >> i held and hugged grieven family members and parents and they asked why does this keep happening? we can't wipe away hatred and evil from every part of the world but we can stop some tragedies. >> reporter: the president said he is pleased the senate will have hearings on gun laws after yesterday's marathon filibuster. a plan to raise the white house fence got a boost from the u.s. commission of fine arts. the commission gave preliminary approval. the fence design must be reviewed by another commission and both have to sign off on it. the secret service wants to raise it to 12 feet in the wake of high-profile security breaches at the white house. 30 stay cities and states have tried and a failed to pass taxes on sugary drinks.

a double rainbow, thanks for sending this in. this one in stephens city, a beautiful one earlier this evening as the sun was making the way down. we saw the rain and thunderstorms come through. boy, what a mess it was.ç we saw numerous severe thunderstorm warnings. numerous tornado warnings. some counties, many in virginia, saw three severe storm warnings. that is out of here. you can see the heaviest rain is moving out. still showers to the west. the bulk of the rain is east of the d.c. metro area, d.c., annapolis, waldorf, still some moderate rain down here. these areas did not see the rain earlier. i'm not too worried about flooding to this area. something i'm watching, the main line, way to the south and east. back here is the area of low pressure that still has the spin through our region. we're not going to see a lot from it but som

that's why the flash flood watch is continuing through 6:00 a.m. tomorrow. not going to take a lot of rain. some locations picked up two to three inches. dulles airport picked up close to two inches in 20 minutes. that's how hard the rain was coming down. so fast. it will not take a lot to get to the flash flooding. never drive through flooded roadways. i like to show you the satellite and radar together. you can see the spin in the atmosphere. that's going to come through overnight. 11:00, most of the rain across southern maryland. by 2:00 in the morning most of it is out of here. some shower activity but it will come back at 7 a.m. but notice it is clearing in d.c. and by 1:00 looking at sunshine. most of the friday is looking good. our who by hour forecast tomorrow. we will see some showers early. not worried -- cloudy and a couple of showers, 76 by 10:00,
