off until after midnight.ç we're watching some tough conditions out west for firefighters battling those wildfires in california. it's hot and dry. some of the worst of it in rugged coastal canyons west of santa barbara where the firefighters are struggling to fight those flames and hundreds of firefighters and a fleet of aircraft doing their best against a blaze that is now grown to 1,700 acres. thousands of residents forced out of their homes as well in arizona and new mexico where wind whipped blazes rage on. back to you. this morning we're preparing you for the second phase of metro safetrack program. whether you're driving or using the train, you'll likely feel the impact. phase two starts tomorrow. it w

messages with his wife. sources tell nbc news around 2:00 a.m. mateen texted his wife asking do you see what's happening? she responded no. he then responded i love you, babe. salman tried calling her husband several times but he never answered the phone and mateen searched for headlines about the massacre on his phone. he eventually died in a shootout with police any nigt the nightc. john mccain is clarifying comments he made claiming president obama is directly responsible for the terror attack in orlando. >> if the president had not pulled everybody out of iraq, you would have never seen the rise of isis so he bears responsibility. >> mccain put out a statement saying he initially misspoke and blamed the president's policies. in ten minutes, nbc's tracie potts joins us live with how soon the senate may

gun control legislation. donald trump is again criticizing the president for his response to the orlando mass shooting. at a campaign rally in dallas, trump claimed the president is blaming guns for the attack and hillary clinton wants to abolish the 2nd amendment. senator bernie sanders is not conceding theç democratic presidential nomination. in a new video message, he urges his supporters to continue a political revolution. >> it's no secret that secretary clinton and i have strong disagreements on some very, very important issues. it is also true that our views are quite close on others. >> sanders says he looks forward to working with clinton in the coming weeks and we aren't aware of any scheduled campaign events for clinton today. drowning and traumatic injuries. the orange county medical examiner says that's how 2-year-old lane graves died from that gator attack at disneyworld the

wildlife officials are still removing alligators from that water but haven't finished out which one boy grabbed the boy on tuesday. disney is adding warning signs about alligators and other wildlife. there are an estimated 1 million gators that live in florida. wildlife officials deal with thousands of complaints about them every year. two d.c. police officers were on patrol in a small park on potomac avenue yesterday when they heard the gun shots. they rushed to a man shot in the leg on the sidewalk and used medical kits until help arrived. there were many witnesses including families in the park. a dark chevrolet car was seen leaving the area after the shooting. d.c. police made an arrest in a brazen daytime shooting. they charged kevin cole with assault with intent to kill.

the chief says they need help to find the shooter. time right now 4:36. there will be a community meeting this morning about preventing the spread of the zika virus in prince george's county. it's going to be held at southern regional technology and recreation, complex there in port washington. officials plan to share with you safe ways for cleaning up standing water. they will also be able to offer some travel advice. that meeting set to begin at 10:00 this morning. d.c. leaders pushing for statehood are working on a state constitution today. the new columbia statehood commission has been putting together a draft. district residents can go online and submit changes they would like to say. the group plans to vote on a final draft by the end of the month. the d.c. council would have to approve to by early july for it to be on the november ballot. we couldç see demonstratio if they resist

the defense is trying to prove gray's death was an accident and not a homicide. goodson is facing the most serious charges of six officers involved. second-degree depraved murder. >> are you confident the state will get a conviction? >> i think something should stick. i really do. >> the verdictç in goodson's non-jury trial could come early next week. heroin is being taken off the street in frederick county, maryland. eight people have been indicted in what police are calling a large scale heroin ring. weapons, drugs and money have also been seized. we're expecting to see more details at a press conference later this morning. this morning we're just learning about a sex assault on a 14-year-old girl in the alexandria section of fairfax county. we saw it happen on richmond highway in a wooded area back in april. mt. vernon police say a man

assaulted her. >> i just basically did what any person, any person with any kind of moral obligation would do. >> we are finally hearing from some of the good samaritans who helped rescue trapped and scared passengers from this tourist bus that crashed on the gw parkway. two of the parkway heroes are army soldiers stationed at -- at least three people were trapped under the bus after it collided with a car and tipped on its side. the soldiers say they were acting on adrenaline when they pushed that bus upright. >> this time is just seemed like the bus didn't weigh anything and so we just lifted the bus and so initially when he tried to push the bus, it actually slid a couple of feet. >> oneer

than a dozen others were hurt in this crash. many are crediting these good samaritans with saving more lives. federal prosecutors have busted a local identity theft ring. they say the scam could involve thousands of victims and millions of dollars. investigators say they posted job listings on craigslist. police claim they asked for driver's licenses, passports and social security numbers. the two are now held without bond in alexandria. d.c. police are searching for two persons of a robbery in southeast. look at the surveillance video here. it clearly looks like a school hallway. the theft happened in the 3300 block of minnesota avenue southeast. that's near kimball elementary school. police are not saying what was taken but they do need help identifying the people you see in this video. silver spring is on a bear alert. this follows several daytimeç sightings

montgomery county police say multiple people calling in to say they've seen this. a bear. news4 viewers also sending us videos and pictures of it. one man tells us they saw the bear and he thinks it was about a 200-pound cub. >> bear didn't look that large to me so i wasn't really afraid of it. i was more so watching it making sure it was going away from me and not toward me so i can get out of the car. >> a bear is a bear. >> looks large to me. >> the bear may be the same one that's been spotted in montgomery and prince george's county over the last few weeks. remember there's one hanging out at arby's in leesburg. >> they keep coming closer and closer. soon we'll see them in rock creek park and it willing over for us. >> you need to stay at least 50 feet. i don't know. >> 200 pounds he wasn't scared. if i saw a 200-pound bear, i

would run the other way. rain leftover from storms overnight. what about today? >> we'll track showers during the morning hours until about 10:00 a.m. after that we'll start to see clouds diminishing from north to south across the area. over all, when all is said and done, you'll say today wasn't so bad. weather having a low impact on your friday. as far as storms go yesterday, no confirmed tornado reports but we are seeing a lot of damage especially in virginia and west virginia. mainly middleburg where some large hail was reported. here's the latest. here's what's left of the storm system. you can see still some heavy rain back around the mountains of winchester and in the immediate area for the most part just scattered light showers and they will move from north to south during the morning hours until 10:00, 11:00. have the umbrella handy. you could deal with rain for the morning commute. otherwise we're starting off cool. 66 at 7:00 a.m. by noon, 70. it will be cooler today but

given that forecast, shouldn't take long for roads to dry out. wet conditions in places including on the beltway in virginia where on the inner loop you can see that sheen on the pavement and minor crash now entirely on that wide left shoulder. this is inner loop local lanes near telegraph road and traffic easily getting by that through old town toward springfield. otherwise in virginia, 66 traffic moves well inside and outside the beltway but we do have a crash behind the fairfax county government center on northbound lanes of lee highway. toward monument drive. all those lanes are blocked. crash took down a pole and they're redirecting traffic using the backside of the government center. beltway looks good. that's the latest. back to you. she found a note on her windshield scolding her for parking in a spot reserved for veterans. she says she has nothing to be sorry about. wait until you hear her response. a glimpse into the future of
