and storms late last night. inner lanes, a minor crash on left shoulder. pavement damp here off the wilson bridge without delay. may want to back off on your speeds when you hit the road later on this morning. i-66 looks good. i-395 and 95 between quantico and pentagon no issues. northbound lanes of route 29 at monument drive are blocked. back to you. heavy rain and golf ball-sized hail went on for hours in middleburg, virginia, last night. look at the size of the hail. the area remains under flood watch this morning and the line of thunderstorms with powerful wind gusts snapped some trees. cars were also damaged pretty badly because of the hail. some neighbors actually put down sandbags to keep the water out while others were without power for hours. this morning the national weather service is investigating to see if those storms produced a tornado in

virginia. you can see the funnel cloud in these pictures as well as some video we got. it isn't clear if the twister caused damage. >> the weather was a problem for those trying to get out of town. someone tweeted this video while stuck on a plane at reagan national for hours. at one point a full ground stop was in effect. somewhere close to 50 flights were canceled at dulles and reagan. a good number of flights set to leave bwi at 6:00 p.m. did not take off until after midnight. it's 5:03. two big fires are burning right now. both are out west. hundreds of acres on fire in new mexico and southern california. there are also lots of evacuations under way. we're just getting new details on those wildfires that are spreading out west. it's hot, dry, factor in the winds overnight and just got word this blaze now at 1,700 acres. a stretch of highway 101 stiç

move through rugged coastal canyons west of santa barbara. thousands of residents forced out their homes in arizona and new mexico. we'll stay on top of the latest developments there. back to you. >> thank you. we're one day out from the beginning of surge two of metro safetrack program. no matter how you get around our region, this will likely impact you. especially if you live in prince george's county. this work will last more than two weeks and we want to check in with megan mcgrath live at the new carolton metro station with more on what to expect. this is a big deal. >> it will be difficult no question about it. if you're a federal employee who lives in prince george's county headed to downtown washington, there are going to be two closed stations blocking your path. there will be buses but frankly the buses can't handle the regular crowds that we see here and it's just math. buses can't carry as many people as trains can. transportation officials are hoping for a 60%

in ridership from prince george's county. that's an awful lot of people that have to figure out something else to do here. take a look at what's going to happen during this phase two. the second surge of the construction here. it's happening between eastern market and minnesota avenue and benning road stations. now that means that the two stations in between those points potomac avenue and stadium armory, they will close down entirely until the work is done. we're talking about a 16-day period here from june 18th through july 3rd. this is phase two of the surge. the hope here is that the work that will be done will make the system more reliable, safer, and certainly we'll see a lot of headaches as work goes forward. we're also going to see some disruptions in virginia starting on saturday. no trains will run between arlington cemetery and rosslyn. we're her at the new carrollton station run

from here to greenfield. folks need to think ahead and come up with other plans and some people should just take some other way or figure out some other way to get to work. return to metro when this part of the project is done because it will be rough going here for a while. back to you in the studio. >> megan mcgrath. thank you. on top of safetrack there will be track work on metro. blue line trains will only operate between franconia, springfield and arlington cemetery and pentagon. there will be no rail or bus service between arlington cemetery and rosslyn. the good news is red,ç yellow d green line trains will operate on a regular weekend schedule. now to the terror in orlando. funeral services are beginning for the 49 people who lost their lives at the pulse nightclub on sunday. one victim will be buried at the greenwood cemetery in orlando today. the city owned cemetery offered plots to all victims in the shooting attack. several victims were from puerto rico.

back to the island yesterday for services that will happen this weekend. and the owner of a gun shop in florida refused to sell gunman omar mateen body armor weeks before this attack. the owner says he thought it was suspicious that mateen wanted high grade body armor typically used by law enforcement. the owner did alert the fbi but since there was no sale, the shop did not check the man's i.d. and had no name to give the feds. >> i'm not backtracking on anything. i'm saying that the president of the united states' actions were responsible because of the full withdraw of troops from iraq. >> arizona senator john mccain there saying president obama's policies are responsible for the threat of isis today. he clarified his comments after saying the president himself was directly responsible for the terror attack in orlando. ahead at 5:50, nbc's tracie pott

we now know how this little boy died. 2-year-old lane graves was killed when an alligator dragged him off at a disneyworld resort on tuesday night. the orange county medical examiner says the toddler died of drowning and traumatic injuries. wildlife officials are removing alligators from the water but have not figured out which one grabbed the boy. graves was wading with hisç father when a gator grabbed him. d.c.'s police chief says people should be fed up with daytime shootings. the latest happened near a small park in southeast washington. two d.c. police officers were on patrol near potomac avenue yesterday when they heard a gunshot. they rushed to a man who was hit in the leg on the sidewalk and used their medical kits until an ambulance arrived. chief says there were many families in the park. a dark chevy was seen leaving the area after

police arrested a getaway from a quadruple shooting last week. investigators are still on the hunt for the mass shooter who is accused of targeting victims. donald trump attacking president obama for his response to the orlando mass shooting. at a campaign rally in dallas, trump claimed the president is blaming guns for the attack and that hillary clinton wants to "abolish" the second amendment. trump will hold a rally in houston tonight. senator rnie sanders wants his supporters to influence democratic policies. in a new video message, sanders did not concede but vowed to work with hillary clinton. >> i look forward to the coming weeks to continue discussion between the two campaigns to make certain that your voices are heard and that democratic party passes the most progressive platform in its history. >> sanders is also encouraging

local and state politics and we are not aware of any scheduled campaign events for clinton today. there will be a community meeting this morning about preventing the spread of the zika virus in prince george's county. it will be at the southern regional technology and recreation complex in fort washington. health officials will let you know about safe ways for cleaning up standing water. they will also have travel advice. the meeting begins at 10:00 a.m. news4 went behind the scene to see how they test for viruses. the control plan includes trapping and testing mosquitos in all eight wards. up until this year it only tested for west nile virus. this year it added testing for viruses of three others. as of today the district says it has no confirmed cases of any of those viruses. >> we want to make certain that

there's a crash on inner loop in local lanes near telegraph on the shoulder not causing a big delay. in fairfax county, a crash took down a pole on lee highway near monument drive and northbound lanes of lee highway remain blocked. southbound, westbound should be able to get by. 66 still running unoevenunevent. back to you. "the voice" singer killed while signing autographs in orlando will be laid to rest today. the gunman took his own life. a private funeral and burial will take place in her home state of new jersey. this morning investigators are examining one of the black boxes from egyptair flight 804. that's the plane that crashed into the mediterranean sea last month. it had 66 people onboard. yesterday a search boat recovered the voice recorder. it could reveal why the

police officer caesar goodson. he's the van driver accused of taking freddie gray on that rough ride that eventually caused his death last year. yesterday the judge denied a motion to dismiss all of the charges against officer goodson. the defense is trying to prove gray's death was an accident and not a homicide. goodson is facing the most serious charge, second-degree depraved murder. >> i don't know if it's the one they get but something should stick. i really do. >> the verdict in goodson's non-jury trial could come early next week. eight people have been indicted in what investigators are calling a large scale local heroin ring. police in frederick county, maryland, seized weapons, drugs and money and we expect more details at a press conference later this morning and this morning we're learning about a disturbing sex assault on a 14-year-old girl. this happened in the

section of fairfax county in april. the girl was assaulted on richmond highway in a wooded area near dart drive. mt. vernon police say the girl was walking along a path when a man grabbed her from behind and assaulted her. >> i just basically did what any person, any person with any kind of moral obligation would do. >> we are hearing about dramatic rescue along the gw parkway for the first time. it was instinct for two army soldiers who were just a couple parkway heroes who stopped to help. the sergeants were driving home when they saw the overturned bus. they immediately pulled over and rushed to help the passengers. at least three people were trapped under that bus. this after it collided with a car and then tipped on its side. the soldiers say they were acting on adrenaline and moral duty. >> it was

it shows you how precious life is. life can end at any moment. >> one person did die and more than a dozen others were hurt in this crash but many are crediting these officers with saving even more lives. a local identity theft ring could involve thousands of victims and millions of dollars. federal prosecutors say two posted job listings on craigslist and asked for driver's licenses, passports and social security numbers. shell companies were set up to advertise cheap travel deals. the two were being held without bond in alexandria. d.c. policeç are searching for two persons of interest in a robbery in southeast. take a look. this is surveillance video. it looks like it's inside of a school. d.c. police say the theft happened near kimball elementary school. police are for the saying what was taken but they do want help identifying the people in the

right now d.c. police on the scene of a stabbing in northwest that happened very close to the third district police station. police found a man suffering from multiple stab wounds in the 3300 block of sherman avenue right near park road. the victim was conscious and breathing on the way to the hospital but his injuries are described as very serious. no word yet on a motive and suspects in this case. back to you. >> molette, thank you. 5:33 right now. you might want to be on the lookout for a bear if you're headed near silver spring, maryland. check this out. montgomery county police say multiple people have called to say that they've seen one of these guys during the daytime. news4 viewers sending us videos and pictures of it. one man tells us he saw the bear. he thinks the cub is about 200 pounds. >> bear didn't look that large to me. i wasn't really afraid of it. i was just more so watching it making sure it was going away from me

yesterday. west virginia, virginia, you got hammered with strong, gusty winds that produced a lot of wind damage and some large hail. we got reports of anywhere from golf ball-sized hail in some areas to baseball sized hail. it looks like one of the hardest hit areas was middleburg, virgini virginia. very little storm reports in maryland and the district. storms weakened as they pushed toward the east. right now 66 degrees. we'll be in the 60s through the morning hours. comfortably cool. showers generally light in nature around 7:00 a.m. by 9:00 a.m., most of the d.c. metro area looks to be dry. showers south of the metro at that point by 11:00 a.m. and peeks of sun and a temp of 68. dining out tonight, comfortable, gorgeous. temps in the upper 60s to 70s. i'll track the weekend and what to expect hour by hour on father's day in ten minutes. she found a note on her windshield scolding her for

impact the weather today on into the weekend. time is 5:44. right now cleanup is under way after strong storms slammed parts of virginia on thursday. heavy rain and huge clumps of hail came down for hours. that's where we find news4's derrick ward with a look at what's left to clean up this morning. big hail out there. >> reporter: the roads are clear. we're on route 50 through the heart of old middleburg. roads are clear now. we have seen some fallen trees and obviously cleared off the roads. crews have been busy out here. this is the golf ball-sized hail that we've been talking about. it did some damage to cars actually and blanketed the ground out here and was a start for folks in middleburg hearing it hitting the roof and all around you. no severe damage we're told of. vehicles were damaged. they seem to be recovering pretty well from the

we are expecting more rain later today as we heard from amelia. so whether the flood issues down here are something later on, we'll have to see. right now a quiet after the storm in middleburg. back to you. >> thank you. a tragedy for a houston family after a young boy crawled into a car and was locked inside in the heat. the 3 year old died after he went into cardiac arrest. neighbors are heartbroken. >> a little kid that was a poster child for being theç energizer bunny. it's not easy news. >> police say the doors had child safety locks on. no charges have been filed but the case is still under investigation. right now prince william county police are looking for a suspect in a domestic related shooting.

lori lee cunningham beat her wife with a gun and then turned it on herself. both women were treated at the hospital. cunningham was discharged from a treatment facility on sunday and disappeared. there's a warrant out for her arrest. it will be another two years before we see a new fence around the white house but a new design has preliminary approval. 11-foot fence which is four feet higher than the current one. it also would have wider and stronger picketts. they expect construction to begin in 2018. paid parking may actually be hurting business for some in rockville. customers have to pay to park at rockville town square along east montgomery avenue. it's free to park at the center and other places. business owners blame paid parking on declining business. the city agreed to study the issue to see if chang

made. today marks one year since nine people were shot and killed during bible study at mother emmanuel church in charleston, south carolina. there are dozens of memorials plan for today in the city. the biggest will be at the college of charleston's td arena where thousands will gather to remember the victims. for the families today is a tough day. >> i feel just i get down in the dumps and i cry. without even knowing what's going to happen. i really have no control. >> a gunman faces charges in connection to the shooting and faces death penalty in state and federal trials. it started a national conversation about symbolism behind the confederate flag. the man in charge of the cia has a new warning about isis. efforts to fight isis have not

county as well. and heavier rain further back to the west over the mountains. this rain you're seeing here heavier and it's going to stay back in those areas. for most of us have the umbrella handy. i think it's really going to be a dry morning. maybe just sprinkles as you head on into work. everybody noticing plenty of cloud cover right now. i want to show you skycast 4 throughout the day. this forecast what the sky is going to look like. 7:00 a.m., still overcast skies. comfortably cool. temps in low to mid 60s. as we work toward midday hours, we notice brightening in the skies. some clouds breaking up and temps around 70 in the suburbs and the district at that point. really nice day to have your lunch outdoors. go for a walk around the midday hours. lower humidity. by 4:00 p.m. temps in mid to upper 70s. more importantly, notice plenty of sunshine. you won't need sunglasses heading in this morning but you will coming home as we kick off our weekend. here's what you can expect for

failed to contain isis and he says that's led to attacks here really been stirred up on gun control because of the orlando shooting, on monday the senate is going to consider four separate measures. one on background checks for gun show sales and internet sales and three different measures on how to restrict gun sales to people on terror watch lists, on the no-fly list should they get notified through fbi. should they be delayed until the fbi gives them an okay. should they actually block these sales from anyone on the watch list. the concern of republicans here is that there are people on these lists mistakenly innocent people that would lose their second amendment right to bear arms if they are blocked or restricted from getting a weapon. that's part of what they're trying to work through to get this done. right now there's skepticism that 60 votes exist here on capitol hill to even move this forward to the next step on monday. >> we shall see what happens. tracie potts live on capitol hill for us.

william webster pled guilty after back in october chase. they were trying to arrest him for beating up his girlfriend. prosecutors released this dash cam video of the attack yesterday. >> he not only rams the one cruiser which you'll see very clearly. he begins to pursue the second cruiser actually as if he's trying to ram that cruiser. despite whatever issues he may have, there's no excuse for running from the police and for attacking the police the way he did. >> both officers were hurt in the chase. one had to have shoulder surgery. both of them have made a full recovery. this morning a veteran is hoping someone realizes what a huge mistake they made. you may have seen this story. it's circulating on facebook. someone left a note on her car at a veterans only parking spot in north carolina. this is what the note said. this parking spot is for veterans, lady. learn to read and have some respect.

weigh anything. >> two good sem right now the skies are finally starting to clear after that string of severe weather in just the last couple of hours. the national weather service canceled a flood watch for much of our area and not only the weather, power outages are also clearing up but there are plenty leftover from the bad storms. northern virginia had the worst of it. dominion virginia has more than 5,000 outages its working to fix including more than 2,500 in fauquier county and another thousand in loudon county. also at this hour, 3,800 customers don't have power. >> take a look at these pictures from martinsburg, west virginia. you can see what looks like funnel clouds but no confirmed tornado. this morning the national weather service is investigating reports of a tornado in nearby berkeley springs, west virginia.
