this was the scene for hours in middleburg, virginia, last night. heavy rain and huge clumps of hail covering the ground. the line of thunderstorms with powerful wind. gusts snapped some trees in half. cars were damaged bad because of that hail. some neighbors actually put down sandbags to keep the water out while others were without power for hours. >> huge hail there. let's get to storm team 4 meteorologist amelia draper who was tracking when that rain will move out of your neighborhood. good morning. >> good morning. not only scattered showers right now and threat of rain really diminishes by 10:00 a.m. before i get to radar, i want to show you storm reports from yesterday. these are hail and wind reports combined. you can see they really favor virginia. hard any any reports in maryland and no storm reports in the district. as storms pushed eastward they fizzled out. look at the report out of b

area around 6:00 in the evening. here's what's left of this storm system. showers in southern maryland. widely scattered light showers in parts of montgomery and frederick county and heavier rain back over the mountains. again, this moves out of the area by 10:00 a.m.ç comfortably cool this morning as well with temperatures in the 60s. dave, you're tracking an issue on the roads after a quiet morning. >> luckily the bulk of that storm damage stayed well to the west of the metro area. the bulk of the metro area beltway included off to a good start. we're looking at i-95 and northbound traffic slow through woodbridge near prince william parkway. a crash just got put in its place on the right shoulder. all lanes are open. brief delay getting past it. not bad on 66. heavy eastbound toward centreville. beltway traffic growing. on rails, orange and silver lanes a

because of unscheduled/ no trains getting through at all. you'll have to find a work around. if you drive, you'll have a lot of company out there. for a lot of folks the work around is skipping rails all together and driving to work. we expect a lot of traffic out there on the area highways as the second phase gets under way. the second phase is going to be more painful than the first because the first time we had single tracking at least and now we have a

two of the stations. now, take a look at the area where the work is being done. it's between eastern market and the minnesota avenue and benning road stations. now, the potomac avenue and stadium armory stations, those are the ones that are going to be closed completely. they'll be shutdown on saturday. the work lasts 16 days. they won't reopen until july 3rd. now, there are going to be buses. a shuttle bus will go between here and new carrollton station but buses can't handle the ridership. they don't carry as many people as trains and so it's really going to be a tough go for a lot of folks. i talked to a rider this morning. he says he's going to ride the rails despite the work. he does expect it to take him a lot longer. >> double the length of my commute probably. easily. it has to be done. should have been done a long time ago.

and ranches west of santa barbara with hundreds of firefighter attacking the flames on ground and by air. blazes in arizona and new mexico forcing thousands out of their homes. we'll keep an eye on it and that's the latest for now. back to you, angie. new details this morning as disney says it's going to start putting up warning signs about alligators. we now know how little boy died in gator attack. the orange county medical examiner says that 2-year-old lane graves died of drowning and traumatic injuries. an alligator grabbed him while he was wading in the water with his father near disney resort tuesday night. wildlife officials are removing gators from that lagoon and have not figured out at this point which one grabbed the boy. it will be a tough weekend for families affected by the terror in orlando. funeral services are beginning for the 49 people who lost their lives at the pulse nightclub on sunday. a city

offering free burials to all victims of the shooting attack. members of a church plan to protest funerals this weekend because of the victims. members of the human chain link group will be at funerals to counteract the church members protests. during the shooting massacre, the fbi says gunman omar mateen texted his wife around 2:00 a.m. he texted his wife asking do you see what's happening? she responded no. his last text read, i love you, babe. salman tried to call her husband several times but he never answered. we learn the owner of a gun shop in florida refused to sell mateen body armor weeks before the attack. the owner says he thought it was suspicious that mateen wanted body armor typically used by law enforcement. >> we could see demonstrations if the d.c. administration rejects the merger.

they say it made procedural areas when it approved the deal in march and say the utility merger is a bad deal for the public. and there will be a community meeting this morning about preventing the spread of the zika virus in prince george's county at the southern regional technology and recreation complex. they plan to share safe ways to cleaning up standing water and offer travel advice. that meeting set to begin at 10:00 this morning. three babies born in the u.s. have birth defects linked to zika. three more have been lost to s miscarriages or aborted because of birth defects. the cdc says it expects local outbreaks of zika in the u.s. as mosquito season starts. news4 went behind the scenes for a look at how the d

the virus. it includes trapping and testing mosquitos in all eight wards. up until this year, it only tested for west nile virus. this year it added testing for zika and two others. the district says it has no confirmed cases of any of the viruses. >> we want to make certain that we are testing, looking for things that are of concern and being able to report that to the public for public safety and also for confidence in where we currently stand. >> the testing on mosquitos is done in d.c.'s forensic lab. doctors showed us it found one potential positive case but they are not sure which virus it is yet. >> just seemed like the bus didn't weigh anything so we just lift the bus. >> some local heroes reflecting on the moment they rushed into help those hurt after a bus rolls over along the george washington parkway.

microphone you're watching here and fell to the floor during a concert in canada last night. no word yet on his condition this morning. it's not the first time that medics have rushed to his side after a stage collapse but in 2011 he got up and finished the show. we're staying on top of the latest developments in this situation. back to you. >> i just basically did what any person, any person with any kind of moral obligation would do. >> we are now hearing about the dramatic rescue along the gw parkway for the first time from the good samaritan who helped save lives after a bus crash. two army soldiers say it was instinct when they saw a crash on the way home. they were among a number of parkway heroes who stopped to help. they were driving home when they saw the overturned bus. they immediately pulled over and rushed to help passengers.

trapped under the bus after it collided with a car and tipped on its side. the soldiers say they were acting on adrenaline and duty to serve. >> i just basically did what any person with any kind of moral obligation would do. >> one person did die and more than a dozen others were injured in that crash. all of the passengers on the bus were tourists visiting from china. maryland judge upholds a controversial suspension. a boy who is now 11 was suspended for chewing a pop tart into the shape of a gun and then pretending to shoot classmates. the incident happened in 2013 at park elementary school. a judge ruled the school could consider the boy's actions disruptive and that the two-day suspension was appropriate based on his past behavioral issues. a 7 year old who

gun to elementary school will not be expelled. he'll be allowed back for his final day of school. he was suspended for ten days after the school board heard arguments the superintendent withdrew his expulsion recommendation. the defense gets back to work today in the trial of baltimore police officer caesar goodson. he's the van driver accused of taking freddie gray on a rough ride that eventually caused his death last year. yesterday the judge denied a motion to dismiss all the charges against goodson. the defense is trying to prove that gray's death was an accident and not a homicide. goodson is facing the most serious charges of six officers involved. second-degree depraved heart murder. federal prosecutors busted a local identity theft ring. they say the scam could involve thousands of victims and millions of dollars. investigators say that two people posted job listings on craigslist. police came they asked for

social security numbers as well and shell companies were set up to advertise cheap travel deals. the two now being held without bond in alexandria. d.c. police now searching for two persons of interest in this robbery in southeast. take a look at the surveillance video we got. it clearly looks like a school. d.c. police say the theft happened in the 3300 block of minnesota avenue southeast. that's near kimball elementary school. police are not saying what was taken but they do need help identifying the people who were in this video. we're watching a huge fire just raging in florida. it has now gone to five alarms. we want to show you the video we've been watching of this large warehouse. our nbc affiliate in that area of sarasota reports the fire broke out about 5:00 a.m. at the

3,000a 3,000 outages in northern virginia. also at this hour, 3,800 rappahannock customers are in the dark. derrick ward is live in middleburg with a look at what crews are doing to get the city back up and running this morning. >> reporter: we're in the heart of old town on route 50 as it cuts through the center of town. this is typical of what you see. damage in this store because the hail actually knocked a hole in the roof and got some leaks in there. a crew just left here taking a look at it. roofs took a beating in the area from the hail. the storm came through here. there was warning. they did hear the alarms going off and everything but we talked to one roofing crew that was busy since last night and off to another project and as you said, about 5,000 power outages in

different story in middleburg. no significant storm damage to talk about around the beltway. in virginia on i-66, congestion building on 66 eastbound direction heading east through fair oaks in toward nutley street. trip inbound on chain bridge with caution on canal road toward arizona avenue. lights are on flash. police are not directing and all lanes go inbound at 6:15 a.m. with caution if you have yet to head out this way. that's the latest. back to you. molette green at the live desk following a developing story. a man in the hospital after a vicious stabbing this morning close to a d.c. police station. this happened shortly after 4:00 a.m. in the 3300 block of sherman avenue northwest. it's close to park road and the fourth district police station. police tell us they found the victim with stab wounds including cuts on his chin and cheek. his

serious although he was conscious and breathing on the way to the hospital. it's believed multiple people were involved but no word on suspects or a motive in this case. back to you. it's 6:35. today marks one year since the massacre inside a charleston, south carolina, church. nine people were shot and killed during bible study at mother emmanuel church. there are dozens of memorials planned in the city today. the biggest will be at td arena where thousands will gather to remember the victims. for families, today will be a tough day. >> anxious. i feel just -- i get down in the dumps. i cry. you know, without even knowing it's going to happen. i really have no control. >> the shooting started a

symbolism behind the confederate flag. dozens of state department employees are calling for u.s. military action in syria. 50 mid level officials argue military action would pressure syria's government into accepting a cease-fire and engaging in peace talks. some state department members are now endorsing air strikes. president obama has said that syrian president bashar al assad must relinquish control. secretary of state john kerry says he's reviewing options. it will be another two years before we see a new fence around the white house. a new design has gotten preliminary approval. the commission of fine arts approved a concept for an 11-foot fence which is four feet higher than the current one. it also would have wider and stronger pickets. the secret service and national park service expect construction to begin in 2018. a houston family is in mourning today after their child crawled into a

died in the heat. such an awful story. authorities say 3-year-old evan died after he went into cardiac arrest in the hot car. police say he may have climbed into the car to get a toy and the childproof locks were on. the family immediately called 911 and started cpr when they found him. no charges have been filed but an investigation is still ongoing. here at the live desk we just learned the second black box, the flight data recorder, now found in the mediterranean. just yesterday egyptian investigators recovered a damaged voice recorder from the wreckage of egyptair that crashed last month. information from both of these black boxes could tell us why that plane went down and if a bomb took it down with 66 people onboard. that's the latest. back to you. the thunderbirds are back in the air over ocean city, maryland,hi

we're working on to get you up to the minute the minute you're up. we want to begin with megan mcgrath with more on the second phase of metro's safetrack program. hi, megan. >> reporter: good morning. it's going to be a tough go for a lot of people especially folks, riders who come out of prince george's county, say you're a federal employee and you normally take metro downtown. once this work begins this weekend, there are going to be two closed stations that block your path. you'll have to figure out some kind of a work around. that's a lot of people that will be impacted. they're going to be shuttle buses. the problem though is those buses can't accommodate all of the people who are going to use. them. it's simple math there. take a look at where the work is going to be done this weekend. it's between eastern market and minnesota avenue and the benning road stations. this is the phase two here. this means potomac avenue and stadium

we now know how the little boy died near a disneyworld resort. the orange county medical examiner says 2-year-old lane graves died of drowning and traumatic injuries when he was dragged off by an alligator earlier this week. we go to florida for more on what comes next. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: disney confirmed it will add more warning signs here at disneyworld following the horrifying death of 2-year-old lane graves. however, the theme park will not specify how many signs will go up or when. this morning the family of lane graves is also speaking out in a written statement saying that we are devastated by the loss and words cannot express our grief. now, disney, the debate has exploded about whether disney did enough to warn its guests of potential dangers in the water.
