let's start with the news this morning. more new twists in the investigation of the pulse nightclub in orlando. officials are taking a close look at the gunman's text messages. stephanie gosk has the latest on this. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. the shooting lasted nearly four hours. we are now learning that during that time in between firing his semi automatic rifle at club goers he was ophis phone posting on facebook and exchanging text messages including that exchange with his wife. new images show the quiet horror. survivors huddled in a bathroom. the shooting at pulse had only just begun. according to a source close to his wife, salman said she texted her husband just after 2:30 a.m.

no. i love you, babe. >> what was happening was the deadliest mass shooting. salman was with mateen when he bought ammunition days before. they were at a walmart and she was with their 3-year-old boy in the toy department. he refused to sell body armor and ammunition to mateen weeks ago because he was acting strangely. he alerted authorities, but they were not contacted. meanwhile, mateen's troubled history continues to surface, including school and employment records. as early as the third grade, teachers were concerned. one writes, omar is verbally abusive, rude, aggressive. much talk about sex and violence. obscenities. fifth grade, oppositional, lacks remorse. years later in high school,

mateen was charged with battery for a fight with a student. this letter mateen wrote explaining the incident was part of the job application with the florida department of corrections exclusively obtained by nbc news. it says the charges were dropped. an experience of me growing up and i learned a big lesson from it. as investigators try and nail down mateen's motivations, president obama met with families thursday. >>ç i held and hugged grieving family members and parents and they asked why does this keep happening? >> reporter: the survivors are also paying tribute to first responders who saved them. like angel who hugged the officer who pulled him out of the club. >> he came in and just had a smile on my face. i have been wanting to see you, the man that took me out of that horrible place. >> the source close to

signs following the horrifying death of 2-year-old lane graves. a prayer service in his nebraska home town. his family saying" words cannot describe the shock and grief. we are devastated." the last gator-related injury at disney world was 30 years ago. >> paul still carries the scars. >> i grabbed my leg and started to thrash me around side to side and pulled me backwards into the water. >> reporter: last year david from san diego said two alligators chased his son at coronado resort. >> i don't know there are zillions ofigators everywhere. >> reporter: warning park goers not to swim, but no reference to alligators. other signs did warn guests not to feed the wildlife but we only found one near a swamp that mentioned alligators. disney said we have closed all of our beaches and made a

conducting a swift and thorough review of all our processes and protocols. this family lives near the park. she's photographed several of gators there as a travel blogger. they defend disney calling this a tragic accident, but clearly struck a nerve with parents across the country. >> the minute that i heard and that poor father trying to pull that child out of an alligator's mouth. >> reporter: the investigation into that child's death continues. a local sheriff says the state wildlife officials had pulled a couple more alligators from the water, but so far they have not determined which one grabbed the boy. willie and savannah. >> gabe gutierrez,ç thank you very much. some new numbers to report this morning on the zika virus and the number of women in this country who have given birth to babies with birth defects

tom costello is following it for us. good morning. >> still no cases of women being infected with zika virus inside the continental united states. all the cases so far involved women who contracted zika while out of the united states. >> reporter: this morning the latest numbers from the cdc suggest three babies born in the u.s. with birth defects linked to the zika virus. in all, 234 pregnant women in the u.s., both residents and visitors have been diagnosed with zika. another 189 cases reported in u.s. territories, mostly porto reek >> across the gulf, especially down in florida. >> reporter: around your home, dump the standing water. all of it. >> birth

the trappers that go out for the state traptured 7,513 nuisance gators and this is how they do it. it is a precarious business. one wrong step could be deadly. for three generations, the register family has been trapping alligators in florida. the preferred method, a fishing rod and a hook to snag a gator and drag it to shore. on this night, a monster. a 13-footer. that's the death roll. this wild alligator almost 1,000 pounds. so big the trapping team pulled it ashore with a pickle truck. now the most dangerous part. covering its eyes to calm it down. you're not scared? >> my heart

have signs? >> i don't think so. >> reporter: disney now plans to post alligator warning signs on other parts of disney property signs say do not feed or go near the alligators. as many as seven gators have been captured on the lake where the toddler was killed. so, if you worked at disney, would there be any way to control the alligator population to make it safe for people? >> no. i say no because they are in the wild. >> reporter: it's estimated there are 1.5 million alligators in florida. the population controlled by a yearly hunt. in this state, it's a smart idea to have a healthy respect for a lake, pond, river, even a ditch because there could be a gator lurking. state statistics show since 1948, 23 people had been killed by alligators. sadly now, guys,

>> gator trapping a dangerous business. kerry sanders, thank you. let's bring in dylan and get a check of the weather. >> janet was talking about the fires out in southern california and we have got these conditions that will be right for these fires to spread. these are called sundowner wind. similar to santa ana winds and they come out of the north. as they rush down the mountain they heat up and dry out. you have the dry, windy conditions in place. although not as windy as yesterday. we still could see some gusts up near 25 miles per hour. by saturday, 86 degrees and by sunday along with the gusty winds, temperatures up around 96 degrees. taking a look at thç dangerous heat in the southwest. again, we're going to be close to all-time records. the hottest it's ever been in tucson, 117 degrees. we'll be close to that on sunday with a forecast high of 116. again in phoenix, 122 is the all-time record. possibly hitting 120.
