took place in arlington back in 2007. a more recent attack drew attention to him. >> reporter: this is really interesting. just about a month ago when an arlington woman was attacked in her house by a stranger as she slept, arlington police launched an intense investigation. they got a big surprise when dna they submitted from that incident matched one of their 2007 cold cases, an unsolved case from nine years ago. they continued to pursue leads and they pointed to justin wingate poe. this is his mug shot taken last night after he was arrested in his home. this is the composite sketch created back in 2007 when a series of attempted sex assaults had arlington women on edge when a man came at them and tried to put a plastic bag over their heads. >> our female victim was walking dn

from behind and attempted to place a plastic bag over the female's face. >> reporter: poe emerged as a suspect in those cases as they investigated an incident last month on edgewood street near lion village. that's when a man got into a woman's house and attacked her while she was sleeping. dna from that incident was submitted to the state crime lab. it matched dna taken from one of the bags in 2007. there was at a latent fingerprint from one of the t207 bags. investigators were able to use that 2007 fingerprint to connect those cases to him. >> he is charged with attempted abduction for two incidents in 2007. we anticipate he will face additional charges for the 2016 case. >> reporter: poe passed a criminal background check as recently

counsellor in the probation office. he was immediately put on administrative leave as soon as they learned of these charges against him. the message that police here have now for arlington women in the wake of this arrest. back to you in the studio. three teenagers are in custody tonight. they're accused of assaulting someone on metro. police say the teens attacked and robbed a man of his cell phone at the wheaton metro station yesterday. all three teenagers were caught and metro says it is looking to see if it has the video of in assault. montgomery county police are trying to determine if two early morning crashes could be connected. at one of the sites a person died. at the other one, two people bailed the vehicle. we find mark segraves with details. >> reporter: good evening, jim.

stretch of road. three lanes in each direction. the speed limit here is 45 miles an hour. investigators say the car that crashed right across the street killing the driver had to be going faster than 45 miles an hour to cause so much damage. it was just before 7:00 this morning. the toyota camry was headed eastbound on randolph road when it jumped the curb and hit a tree. this woman who didn't want to go on camera said there have been several accidents along this stretch of randolph road, but this is the worst she had ever seen. >> gruesome and just words can't explain what that car -- it is unrecognizable. it looks like it was in a car compacter. tires in places that aren't even supposed to be there. it is just amazing what the car looks like. >> reporter: the driver was killed. his body had to be cut out of the mangled wreckage. >> investigators are telling me that they are

as an element of causation for this crash. what they don't know is why this car may have been traveling over the speed limit. >> reporter: just one minute after the first crash, another crash less than a mile away. another car also driving eastbound on randolph road crashed into this cell phone pole. >> occupants of that vehicle fled. >> reporter: the driver and one of the passengers of the second crash are now in police custody after drugs were found in the car. >> right now, they're facing potential drug charges as investigators are still talking with them. >> reporter: as for whether the two crashes were related -- >> it is unusual. it is one minute apart. it is only about a mile apart. that's one of the reasons why investigators don't want to just let it go. >> reporter: now police have not released the identity of the victim. they actually haven't even identified the gender of the victim in this

they are still looking for two of the suspects who fled the second crash scene. wendy, back to you. well, it could have been far worse. that's what the mayor of middleburg is saying about the intense hailstorm that trashed much of the town last night. right now they're in the middle of a very big cleanup, a cleanup that will no doubt stretch into the weekend. david culver is there tonight with a look at that. that looks pretty nasty. >> reporter: no question. it is really nasty out here. this cleanup will linger well into the weekend. a lot of the streets here look just like this, car after car covered in either plastic or some sort of tarp. believe it or not, all of these cars down here owned by the same family. you can see all of this done by hail and its really seemingly endless around here. inside betty davis' fun

hurricane tape. >> reporter: he and his wife joyce keeping the store open longer hours to help their neighbors, but it comes as they have their own repairs. >> it was something that i have never seen. i don't know if i would want to witness it again. >> reporter: the skylight now looks like a busted lightbulb. its jagged edges blowing in the breeze. >> everybody works together. >> reporter: despite all of this damage that you see here, there were no serious injuries because of this storm. doug, i was talking to the police chief here as well as the mayor and they are crediting you, doug ckammerer, in part because they were watching your coverage yesterday and they were getting the alerts on their phone. they went into places where they could hide and be safe. >> thanks, david. i appreciate that. that's exactly what we were doing yesterday. middleburg was under the gun right around this time

yesterday. we saw that storm, one storm, one supercell -- it even had a tornado warning at one time -- making its way down. we had reports of baseball-size hail. that storm all the way down to the south. that was out ahead of the line of storms that came on through. we saw kacouple of storms that produced tornado warnings. there was some damage around the region. right now nothing to worry about. as a matter of fact, look at these numbers. 81 degrees d.c. 82 in hagerstown. 71 ocean city. tonight's forecast. a great night out if you're going out friday night. plenty of weekend sunshine. we're talking about saturday and sunday. then tracking some heat. some heat. not a lot. >> all right. get out the spf 50. some of you got a chance to see the u.s. coast guard

chopper 4 caught the pictures. around 1:00, the coast guard flew nine planes over the city. the plane soared over nats park, the pentagon, and arlington national cemetery. some of the planes were painted to resemble historical aircraft. phase two of metro's safetrack program is set to begin tomorrow and there will be a big impact on several lines. rail service will be shut down on a few stations for 16 straight days. on the orange, blue, and silver lines. during that time, two stations, potomac avenue and stadium armory will be shut down. this will be a major impact for riders going to and from prince george's county. metro is telling riders on those lines to consider alternate transportation. there are new details surfacing today about the events that led up to and during the mass shooting in orlando over the weekend. there's some chilling new images from inside the bao

overdose. >> reporter: beth schmidt said she was not surprised when investigators made one of the biggest heroin busts in frederick county history. they also seized the synthetic drug that killed her son, fentanyl. it's the same drug that claimed the life of music legend prince. >> it's 90 times more potent than morphine. >> reporter: it was the result of an investigation sparked by overdoses throughout frederick county. they were able to link the drugs from those overdoses to the same suppliers. >> this is not a street level investigation. this is a large-scale drug investigation where we actually dismantled a drug trafficking ring. >> reporter: so where were all of these drugs coming from? the authorities said the dealers would get the drugs in new york and bring them back to the frederick county area. polar

this woman. officials say there have been 153 overdoses in all of frederick county so far this year. 14 were fatal. >> we have never seen, ever, the amount of heroin we're seeing right now in this region. >> reporter: schmidt is fighting to change law and improve funding for treatment. she is glad to see police are going after the mid level dealers. no arrests were made in her son's death. >> i think that sends a message we know where you're going, we know where it's coming from, and we are coming after you. you're not going to be able to lay low anymore. we're not going to leave you alone. developing right now at the live desk, russian president vladimir putin says he's going to fight a decision to ban russia's entire track and field team from the rio olympics. putin is saying it is

right now here at the live desk you may only have a few minutes to get through one part of the beltway before everything starts to bog down. we are expecting major delays for emergency road repairs. take a look. this is the interloop near route 450 in prince george's county. you can see that huge pothole right there. in a few minutes from now three of the four lanes will be closed so they can get to work on the pothole that's on the bridge deck there. they'll put a steel plate over the pothole for now, but the work is expected to last well into the overnight hours and then crews will have to come back on monday to do some permanent repairs. again, that is going to close three lanes, but it is going to happen between 9:00 and 5:00 in the morning. bottom line, you can expect some heavy traffic

now at 5:30, they line the streets shoulder to shoulder. we'll take you to texas where protesters and supporters line the street as donald trump come to town. the defense is resting in the murder trial of caes caesar goodson. he is the man who drove the police van and he did not take the stand in his defense today. >> but a fellow officer who was there did testify. chris gordon is live in baltimore now with the latest details as this trial draws to a close. >> reporter: baltimore police officer caesar goodson waived his right to testify in his own defense. by law, that cannot be held against him. officer goodson drove the baltimore

which freddie gray suffered a broken neck in april of 2015. prosecutors say gray was injured because goodson gave him a rough ride, running a stop sign, making a quick right turn. >> there's no evidence that there was a rough ride. >> reporter: the final defense witness called was officer edward nero, who was acquitted in may on his own trial in the death of freddie gray. nero said that gray was banging against the van, shaking the wagon side to side, violently screaming. >> mr. gray was being difficult and resisting and therefore it was more reasonable for officer goodson not to get into the van with him and buckle him. >> reporter: prosecutors say goodson also failed to get medical help for gray. charges against

second-degree depraved heart murder, manslaughter. that's the latest from baltimore. back to you. the parents of that 2-year-old snatched by a gator at disney world released a statement about that attack. matt and melissa graves say they're devastated by the death of their son lane. lane was wading in shallow water at a disney resort when the gator grabbed him. his father tried to save him, but couldn't. the parents said words can't express their shock and grief. disney will add gator warnings to their resorts now. lavia hid in a bathroom stall, a stall for the disabled in the club. there were more than 30 people in that stall with him. of that 30, only 7 survived. >> the first thing he said everybody come out because everybody is going t

that clinton might choose warren as her running mate. more than 1/3 of clinton's supporters say she should. bernie sanders will be back on the hill on monday to vote on gun reform amendments that come out of that shooting in orlando. the senator from vermont cast one vote this year and that was back in january when he voted in favor of rand paul's audit the fed bill. sanders has missed 101 of the 102 votes the senate has cast this year. a discovery 15 years later. find out what led up to the funeral for a fire chief who was killed some 15 years ago on 9/11. it was a mass shooting that led to the removing of confederate symbols across the country.

two teenage girls attacked at a metro station while on their way home from school. >> one of the mothers of those girls was shocked to learn video of that beating was posted online. we are live at l'enfant plaza. >> reporter: it is a good thing they did record that video and post it on social me

metro says because of that they're close to making an arrest. >> she came up and said what you want to do and started hitting on us. >> reporter: these two mothers who did not want to be identified said that earlier this month their two daughters were inside the l'enfant plaza on their way to school when they were brutal beaten by a gang of teens. >> it was animal like. to see how they pound on my child like she don't mean anything. >> reporter: it happened around 6:00 p.m. rush hour on a crowded platform. the assault lasted for minutes and then one of the victims was robbed of her cell phone. >> she didn't understand why so many adults sit around and nobody helped them. >> reporter: this mother says what happened next shocked her. >> she said i found a video of the fight. i said there was a video of the fight and she said, yeah, there were people filming. >> reporter: it was posted on instagram. it was one of the most popular fight videos on the s

right around 90 degrees. we stay around 90 on tuesday. tuesday we'll have a few more clouds build in and just a touch of humidity. just a slight chance of a shower or thunderstorm. about a 40% chance. we take those temperatures back down into the 80s wednesday as we clear out. thursday and friday, looking good as we head towards the end of next week and the beginning of this weekend. today a senior at a fairfax county high school earned more than a diploma. he got a big lesson in life. caleb shultz graduated from south lakes high school in reston today. angie goff reports on a father risking his life's work to give his only son a better future. >> i always remember like coming downstairs and seeing my dad and all of his friends paint and stuff. >> reporter: caleb shultz grew up watching his dad work. >> i know every brush stroke. >> reporter: soon to be

because of the size of the area, he can only do sections at a time. this is about six feet tall and it has about 30 panels of his cut up work. if he were to take everything in this room and cut it up, it would be at least 150 feet long. he is calling the project leap and getting help from fans on facebook organizing the panels. as a dad, it's also a lesson for the boy he raised. before sending him out into the real world. >> don't be afraid to be happy. make it happen and go for it. pretty simple and it is also pretty scary too at times. >> reporter: it is a big risk. this is your inheritance. that for both has become an emotional undertaking. >> this is probably our favorite place we've ever stayed. >> reporter: as the personal stories behind the pictures are reduced to just slices. caleb says he's inspired. >> it gives me

finally, a final salute today for a new york fire chief killed in those terror attacks back on 9/11. >> this is the day his widow and his two sons who are firefighters have been waiting for. >> reporter: this church crowded with firefighters from across the country paying a final tribute to chief lawrence stack nearly 15 years after he died at ground zero. riding on the back of their

father's fire truck, chief lawrence stack's two sons are finally giving their dad a final sendoff. >> i'm glad the family can get some closure now, but i have always held strong to larry because he was kind of a dad to me. >> reporter: richard brant came from california. he's been wearing this bracelet since 9/11 when his former mentor was killed. chief stack was never found. his family tracked down a blood vial he had donated. today that plan to bury that last piece of dna. >> there's over 1,000 that have no closure. i know it eats away at all the families. >> reporter: chief stack, a 33 year veteran of the fdny, was in charge of the safety division. on 9/11, he raced into the burning tower, rescuing countless lives.
