coming up in a few minutes. thank you, tom. we want to begin with that breaking news early this morning. a deadly shooting. prince george's police are calling in a homicide. someone shot and killed a man on southern avenue near united medical center, not far from the metro station. we have video of the scene overnight. this happened shortly after 2:00 in the morning. police say they have not arrested anyone. we will update you as soon as we loern more. in montgomery county, there was a serious crash on the beltway. in fact, i got stuck in this. the traffic is finally clear. this is from a viewer. you can see that the police and first responders on the inner loop near clara barton highway, pretty heavy presence there. this involved a tractor-trailer, three people were hurt. the crash happened not long after 3:00 in the morning and caused quite the backup. about a mile long. 6:02 is your time right now on this saturday. phase 1 is done. now we're on to phase 2

metro's safe-track program. the impact is between the eerp market and minnesota avenue and betty rose station. it's going to last 16 days. two stations in the district will close. stadium armory and potomac avenue. prince george's riders, those who use blue, orange or silver lines, you need to consider alternate routes. there is planned track work as well this weekend. that's happening really around the blue line areas. operating between franconia, springfield and arlington cemetery and pentagon. no bus service between arlington and rosalyn. >> more issues for those of you who commute. there will be emergency road repairs on the inner loop of the beltway in prince george's county. this is happening next week.

right there. a pothole they're going to fix. it's on a bridge deck near route 450. three of the four lanes will be closed during the repairs. crews going to minimize the impact by working between 9:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. a scary story developing out of colorado where sheriffs deputy say a boy was attacked by a mountain lion. a 5-year-old boy was attacked. this happened in pit kin county near aspen. deputies say the boy was playing outside with his brother when the mountain lion jumped on him and hurt his head and his neck. that's what he's being treated for. the boy is in fair condition at this hour. someone from the u.s. forest service tracked that lion down and put it down. right now, we have a brand new -- actually, we should say brand new signs in disney world up warning about the wildlife living there. this comes after a

near a disney resort earlier this week. the boy ended up dying. all the beaches at disney are closed today. workers have installed a rope fence along the water. a former police captain facing sex offense charges this morning. fairfax county police say he inappropriately touched a 10-year-old girl. he lives in fairfax but we checked with our sister station in miami. they confirmed he used to be a police captain in north miami beach. he retired about three years ago. he's charged with aggravated sexual battery and taking indecent liberties with a child. another arrest to tell you about. also in fairfax county. this is 34-year-old justin win gate who used to work with criminals at a probation office. police say they found dna linking him to two attacks on women dating back almost ten years. they connected him to those crimes after a sex assault last month. police want to take a close look

they believe he's a serial predator and may be connected to other cases. the woman killed in a deadly crash in montgomery county was just identified. victoria hitchens was killed when she hit a tree friday morning. investigators are trying to figure out if another wreck that happened about a minute later is connected to the original crash. the driver of the suv on the same road then slammed into a utility pole near new hampshire avenue. that driver and a passenger were taken into custody and officers found drugs in the suv. new details this morning surfacing about omar mateen, the man behind the mass shooting in the orlando. one of the survivors of the shooting tells the associated press he saw mateen earlier that night buying a drink at the pulse nightclub. the witness said he saw him at the bar and has given his accounts to the fbi. it's not been verified yet. the man was one of 50 taken to the hospital that night. >> it's definitely not something

but i think we need -- we fell into our roles. >> focused on the patients. they're the most important part of all of this. we're a bit part. >> the doctors there who treated the dozens of injured. 49 people killed in the attack. the deadliest mass shooting in u.s. history. many of their funerals happening in the coming days. a story led to a lot of people reacting on social media. one person's post got him suspended. florida's assistant state attorney wrote on facebook that downtown orlando is dangerous. he said the whole city, quote, should be leveled, end quote. a spokeswoman said lewis was suspended for violating the social media policy. the shooting hats also caused a lot of talk about gun control and gun rights. donald trump's presumptive republican nominee for president weighed in last night. >> so don't let them take your guns away

brand new this morning, news about the suspect in a shooting of a british politician. jo cox was shot and killed last week. thomas mayer, a gardner was charged with her murder. mayer said death to traitors, freedom to britain, end quote. he's charged with murder and several other offenses. jo cox represented the labor party and was 41 years old. it's been a tough couple of days in oakland, california. they lost their third police chief in eight days. the department is struggling with allegations that a number of officers had sex with a prostitute. -- the last acting chief was on the job two days before stepping down. the mayor says the decision was not connected to the

images. thousands remain without power in central virginia after thursday's storms. in addition to homes and cars damaged, nearly a dozen school buildings were damaged as well. it could cost between 750,000 and $1 million worth of damage. developing this morning, the brushfire in california getting bigger. firefighters say right now the fire is 40% contained. high winds are blowing it through southern california canyons. firefighters say it is especially dangerous during the day. hundreds of people have been evacuated. one of the super powers not only of the world won't be able to compete in track and field at the rio olympics. they banned russian track and field competitors from the game after an investigation included cheating, cover-ups. president vladimir putin called the ruling unfair. s

the state neglected to pay them for overtime and night shift for as much as $30 in every relevant pay period. that's according to the "washington post." the paper says the state discovered the problem when it switched to a new payroll system. as many of the folks affected by this are correction's employees, hospital workers and police. the officer involved in the fatal crash of a pedestrian will not face any charges. the accident happened back in april. jeffly aguilar walked a -- he was struck and killed by the police cruiser. the commonwealth's attorney says the officer who hit him has no criminal responsibility and can soon return to full duty. disturbing story here. child endangerment charges for a pennsylvania couple. they gave their 14-year-old daughter to a man as a gift for helping them financially. that man now charged with sexually assaulting the girl. officials found lee kaplan at his home along with 12 girls ranging in age fro

18 years old on thursday. the oldest girl told police kaplan fathered two of the other children with her. a neighbor said she called police. >> i don't know the situation. i don't know if they're kidnapped or being bought and obviously sold or given as gifts. just want them to get help and get back and -- it's sad and fearful every time you see them. >> the couple says the other nine kids found in the home north of philadelphia are theirs. all of the children are now in protective custody. >> disturbing. baltimore police officer see ar goodson could learn his fate next month. closing arguments expected on monday. goodson is charged with the death of freddie gray. he was one -- he was the one driving the transport van in which gray suffered the fatal neck injury. goodson is the only officer out of six facing charges to be charged with murder. prosecutors say he

a billion dollar project about to get under way to make it easier to get around reagan national airport. the airport is adding a commuter concourse on the north side this fall. it's the biggest project in nearly 20 years. a few weeks ago, a record number of people were flying out of reagan national. a congressional representative is also holding a meeting about concerns next week. the thunderbirds will return to the skies this week yechd. earlier this month a pilot crashed during an air force graduation in colorado. the pilot was forced to eject. he was not seriously hurt but he's been grounded for the last two weeks. they'll resume their show in ocean city, maryland. it is a gray day for the shorts, the tank tops. tom is updating the forecast and when to expect the warmest temperatures of the weekend a touching tribute to a teen and powerful message to others. how a real life story of violence is bein used tog

anything. >> it happened around 6:00 p.m. rush hour on a crowded platform. the assault lasted for minutes and then one of the victims was robbed of her cell phone. >> she didn't understand why so many adults around and no one helped them. >> this mother said what happened next shocked her. >> she said i found a video of the fight. i said, there was a video of the fight? >> she sd yeah. there were people filming. >> hours after the attack, video appeared on instagram. the victims are now left with the physical and emotional pain. >> the swelling has gone down but now the pain of the cracked bone is there and starting to bother her. she sleeps almost all day. and is up all night. >> prince george's county police and other police are familiar with the gang responsible for the attack. they monitor their activities. most its members are from prince george county. metro police are close to an arrest. these

moved their daughters to another school. >> her being at that school means she would have to take the train, metro she didn't feel safe on metro. >> that was tracee wilkins reporting. now metro has been able to identify the suspects through their cameras and believe that they are close to making an arrest. prince george's county, police are calling this group a gang and say they're familiar with them. this morning, we're learning more about how a giant fire started in manassas. look at that scene right there. we're hearing from one of the folks who rushed to save himself and his family. investigators say the fire started when someone tried to put out a cigarette in a pot with dried soil. the soil smoldered, then the whole complex caught fire. tony cardenas was forced out of his home. he's thankful for his friends' support. >> i was very humbled, overwhelmed by the generosity, the love and the caring that

>> cardenas is the redskins bandleader. his home was gutted. he's one of 40 people the red cross is providing temporary housing for. it is one of the biggest drug busts in maryland's history. beside the mass amount of heroin, pot and other pills, there were guns, cars, and cash. nine people facing charges in and they're still looking for one more person. police say the bust is the result of an investigation sparked by overdoses in the county. they were able to link the overdoses to the same suppliers in new york. >> this was not a street level investigation. this is a large-scale drug investigation where we actually dismantled a drug trafficking ring. officials say there have been 153 overdoses in all in frederick county so far this year. 14 were fatal. taking this many drugs will save lives.
