metro station this is morning to let you know about issues. >> 502 right now, david, anybody showing up early there? >> reporter: they sure are. in fact, folks are waiting at the top of the escalator as you can see waiting for gates down below to open up. i saw one woman who got here 20 minutes ago. she normally starts her day, she says, at minnesota avenue but decided to just come here and prepare for any delays. that's why folks are getting here as early as possible. the essential part of this is going to be that everything from this station, eastern market is not going to happen. nothing on the rails. that's orange and silver line in particular. really blue line is non-existent here within the city and so the advice is obviously if you have to come on metro on the rail, be driven either directly here t

and minnesota avenue. i also noticed out here they have capital bike share and they have it half full, half empty for people coming to pick up a bike or those getting off at eastern market and need a bike. a few signs up mapping out the route for those who are going to be on bicycles. we'll be out here this morning. in our 6:00 a.m. hour, we'll talk to gm paul wiedefeld and talk to riders and get a feel for how it will work in phase two of safetrack at metro. later this morning we'll talk one-on-one with the man in charge of all of the changes. metro gm paul wiedefeld joins us for a live interview at 6:15. a little relief for commuters. prince george's county is adding a second shuttle bus line to help riders get around. it will run between largo and suitland stations. there will be ten buses during rush hour. phase 2 will end on july 3rd. we're still

shooting out of northeast d.c. this as we just got some new video from the scene. take a look. this is in the 1600 block of montello avenue where d.c. police obviously still on the scene trying to find out why a man was shot and killed here. so far no arrests have been made in this case. it's still developing. eun? >> angie goff from the live desk. thank you. a metro station back open after a stabbing. police are looking at security footage. officers believe the attacker may be a woman. the man is expected to recover and metro closed the station for about 45 minutes. breaking news now. traffic moving again after a pedestrian accident in prince george's county. this happened about 10:30 last night on mlk highway in landover. we know there were as many as two victims there. the driver did stay

scene. no word on the victims' condition this morning. we'll update you when we learn more. firefighters are still trying to get a handle on several wildfires out west. in new mexico, the 28 square mile fire destroyed two dozen homes and largely uncontained. in eastern arizona a fire that burned 19 square miles just 40% contained now and many california neighborhoods are being forced to evacuate as the fires threaten homes there. the cause of the fires remain under investigation. we're learning about a number of heat related deaths out west. arizona confirmed four people died due to a massive heat wave. in addition to the deaths, the heat fired four major wildfires across the southwest and there's no relief in sight. happening today, the senate will vote on four gun control measures. this c j

after the shooting in orlando and after nearly 15-hour filibuster by democrats forcing the issue. the votes center on background checks and preventing suspected terrorists from buying guns. nbc's tracie potts will have more later on what to expect. >> cory james connell. >> the names of the victims in the shooting at pulse nightclub were read at the largest vigil to date. organizers estimated as many as 50,000 people attended. they held candles and created a ring of fire around the park. 49 people were killed in that shooting and 18 people are still in the hospital being treated for wounds from the attack. today the fbi will release a partial transcript of omar mateen's phone calls to 911 during the shooting. authorities previously said that during three 911 calls with

dispatcher, mateen pledged allegiance to isis. this comes as the investigators are trying to uncover his motives. so far they found no manifesto or suicide note. donald trump is suggesting profiling american muslims as a way to fight terrorism. he made the comments sunday on cbs's "face the nation." he said other countries do it and it's not "the worst thing to do." >> i hate the concept of profiling. we have to use common sense and use our heads. we really have to look at profiling. >> no response from hillary clinton yet but she has rejected trump's comments about muslims in the past. the justice department policy prohibits profiling on the basis of race, religion, ethnicity and national origin. the council will release funding of

taillights. we're watching to see what kind of impact this will have on the roads. for now back to you. >> dave, thank you. it's 5:13 right now. we continue our team coverage of phase 2 of metro's safetrack with derrick ward live at the new carrollton station where shuttle buses are helping people get to work today. good morning. >> reporter: they will be. if you ride the subway from here you'll only get as far as minnesota avenue and then they're going to take you on a bus to get you on the other side of the closures due to the surge. but prince george's county will operate shuttles to get passengers on the green line and avoid that all together. those shuttles will actually be running between the largo station and the suitland stations and here from new carrollton to green belt. it will start today and run through july 1st and they'll go between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., ten

7:00 p.m. they'll have ten buses. they still are asking you to add one to two hours to your travel time because you're going to be on surface track and a lot of people aren't going to ride metro at all putting more cars on the streets. an interesting morning here. metro just opened and we'll keep you posted as to how it's going to go this first time and also talk to folks about how they may be adjusting trips to deal with this first real test of surge 2. derrick ward, news4, back to you. a decision could happen this week in the trial of baltimore police officer caesar goodson. lawyers will present their closing arguments today. goodson is charged in the death of freddie gray. he was the one driving the transport van in which gray suffered his fatal neck injury. goodson is the only officer out of six to be charged with murder. prosecutors say goodson intentionally gave gray a rough ride. the defense says

soon there will be new affordable housing for d.c. residents on new jersey avenue in northwest. later this morning the mayor will be part of a ground breaking ceremony for a community called plaza west. it will provide more than 120 units for families including 50 specifically for grandparents raising their grandchildren. we're working to see how three people are doing after a crash in northeast d.c. look at video we got from the d.c. fire department. the crash happened at 4th and franklin streets before 7:00 last night. you can see crews working to rescue people trapped inside that suv. three people went to the hospital with serious injuries. the two people hurt when part of a tree fell on the national mall are expected to be okay. they were walking near 9th street and constitution avenue when the branch toppled on top of them. good samaritans rushed to help lifting the branches off until medics arrived. it also crashed on a

by. the driver heard the cracking sound but couldn't get out of the way in time. >> all of a sudden the tree is falling down and crush my car, you know. >> part of the 9th street by sculpture garden and entrance to 395 were shutdown until the branch and car could be cleared. developing right now, at least 14 people are dead after a taliban suicide bomber targeted their mini bus in the afghan capital. eight others were wounded in today's attack. the mini bus was transporting security guards from a foreign company. a police official says the 14 dead are nepalese citizens. game seven of the nba finals was so intense a fan actually ended up in the hospital. bay area news is reporting that he was pushed over a second deck railing after a fight. this happened at the end of the warriors/cavaliers game in oakland. the victim is in his early 20s and was in critical but stable condition at l

with summer comes the danger many parents hate to think about. four children have died after being left inside a car and overheating. advocates with kids in cars.org say changing your habits may help prevent another tragedy. they suggest making a habit of checking the back seat every time you get out of the car. they call on automakers to help remind drivers. >> we want to challenge all of the automakers to include a reminder and technology to prevent children from being left in the back seat. >> some in the auto industry are already making changes. each of gms 2017 acadia suv's are equipped with rear seat reminders including a display on the dashboard and a chime. if you look for a job in prince george's county, the mgm national harbor employment center opens today. the hotel and casino will hire 3,600 employees over thext

brazil's largest underground tunnel coming less than two months before the summer games and just days after rio's interim state governor declared a state of financial emergency. the issue was the state government is bankrupt and can't meet its financial obligations ahead of the games. the games are set to begin august 5th. a former vanderbilt football player faces at least 15 years in prison for raping an unconscious woman in his dorm room. brandon vandenberg was found guilty of aggravated rape, sexual battery and unlawful photography in a 2013 incident. they were originally convicted of rape last year and verdicts were tossed out because a jury didn't reveal he was a victim of statutory rape. he will be sentenced next month. bring on the heat. the sunny stretch won't last forever. chuck bell is updating four things to know about your forecast. new challenges for metro

to me. here we are at the eastern market station all of the way until benning road and minnesota avenue on both the silver and orange lines. think of it as this chunk being removed from the rail. that's not able to be ridden on through the tracks so essentially you have to then take a shuttle bus to minnesota or benning. you can take the bikes. they have capital bikes out here, too. that's the option for you. i talked to one rider a short time ago. he said he tried it out this weekend for the first time and he said for him it was a little frustrating. >> caught me off guard yesterday when i started my day father's day it was real hectic for me. i'm frustrated. today i know what's going on so i can deal with it just a little bit. >> reporter: metro is pretty heavily staffed out here this morning handing out pamphlets and tang

one of many violent incidents in the city this weekend. someone shot two people on f street early yesterday morning in northeast. 20 minutes earlier man was stabbed on columbia road northwest. they are investigating stabbings on benning road northeast and valley avenue southeast. all victims are expected to survive. we now know what caused an apartment fire in laurel that left 22 people without a home. fire officials say it was started by a cigarette left on balcony saturday night. the fire quickly spread to the roof. it took firefighters 40 minutes to put it out. one firefighter fell off of a ladder. he's expected to be okay. the red cross is now helping the 22 displaced residents. the number of refugees hit a brand new worecord. 65.3 million at the end of 2015. 2014 saw the highest

refugees world wide since world car ii with 60 million displaced people. leaders from europe and elsewhere are being urged to do more to end wars that are forcing people from their homelands. developing this morning, a 17 year old is dead after being shot in front of a church in chicago. police believe the gunman used a high capacity assault rifle based on the number of shell casings. stray bullets pierced home fronts and shattered windows in the busy neighborhood. police believe this attack was gang related. as many as eight people killed and 36 others wounded in shootings across chicago since friday evening. 5:35. police in fairfax county are looking for the man who touched a girl inappropriately at the target in the town center. the incident happened on saturday. the 11 year old told her father what happened when they went home and he called police and the store's surveillance cameras caught the man leaving the parking lot in a burgundy ford mustang. the search continues for a man who grabbed a girl walking home from

the 16 year old says the man approached her on the sidewalk in arlington on friday and put his hands up her skirt. a sleepy driver may be what caused a crash in virginia. the van flipped over five times. this was 20 miles south of fredericksburg. wenceslao cruz-marquez was behind the wheel when that van crashed just after midnight on saturday. he's now charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter. cruz-marquez and 15 others were headed to new jersey from north carolina. four men, a woman, and a child died. today is the last day of school for students in prince george's and montgomery county. students spent extra days in the classroom this month to make up for all those days missed because of bad weather this past winter. remember all that snow? prince george's had to make up four days and montgomery county only had to mak u

of these delays. good morning. >> reporter: good morning again. when you think about it, prince george's county and parts of d.c. are going to be the most adversely affected by this surge two. people that come in from charles county, they are going to see the adversity. the county is kicking in and it's all about shuttles. what's going to happen today is starting today through july 1st, the county is going to run free shuttles. they'll run between the largo and suitland stations and between the new carrollton and green belt stations put passengers on rails at green line to avoid delays and closures from the surge. the shuttles will start running at 6:00 a.m. this morning between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. ten buses out on load and go status. they'll li

involving a football player. derek sheely's parents filed the lawsuit. the lawsuit accuses the school of letting him continue contact drills despite bleeding heavily from his forehead. it also claims his death was preventible. they name the ncaa, frostburg's head coach as defendants. 2 million concussions in sports or other activities happen in u.s. children and teens every year. the estimate is based on data from 2013 using emergency room visits, doctor visits and other reports. researchers say the numbers aren't as precise as they should be highlighting the need for concussion surveillance systems. the centers for disease control published a study last month finding that playground related concussions have also increased in recent years. 5:49 right now. threats and intimidation tactics is what some delegates
