>> we're having trouble with dave's microphone. we'll get back to him in just a moment. phase 2 of metro's safetrack program is getting the first workday test this morning. route options are reduced until july 3rd. >> the potomac and armory stations are closed. blue line no service between arlington cemetery and rosslyn. our team has you covered this morning from rails to roads to issues coming into our live desk. >> let's begin with david culver live at the eastern market station. david? >> reporter: eun, you can see it's busier behind me. this is one of several shuttle buses that have been opening up to let folks load here at eastern market. from here they'll continue along the portion of the rail that's not operable via metrorail itself from here benning road

buses are lined here waiting for folks to get off metro. part of the problem is each metro train according to the spokesperson has 800 people on it if it's at capacity. each bus holds 50 people. you're talking about lag time in trying to get these people from one station to the next. that's the struggle this morning. and i did catch up with some of the riders here. some having to start their day earlier. one guy telling me he can't start any earlier. he gets here at 4:45. that's when bus service starts for him and metrorail starts for him. i asked how it's feeling for him this morning. here's what he had to say. >> it's very frustrating. it's inconvenient. >> reporter: one of the other options to get from one station to the other is the capital bike share. they point folks in that direction. they say if you want to use that, they're down to $2 for a day pass discounted that

to get you through phase 2 of metro safetrack program, we set up a special section on nbc washington app of commuting alternatives. to a developing story, police are investigating a pedestrian accident in prince george's county. this happened just after 10:30 last night on mlk highway in landover. details are coming in slowly but we do know there were as many as two victims and the driver did stay on the scene. no word yet on the victim's condition. today the deciding judge in the trial of baltimore police officer caesar goodson will hear closing arguments. goodson is charged in the death of freddie gray. he was the one driving the transport van in which gray suffered his fatal neck injury. goodson is the only officer to be charged with murder. prosecutors say goodson intentionally gave gray a rough ride. the defense says gray's death was an accident and not homicide. a judge instead of a jury will hand down the verdict.

6:06 as we turn to the attack in orlando now. today we will get a partial transcript of omar mateen's phone calls to 911. investigators are trying to uncover the gunman's motive. a senior official says so far they found no manifesto or suicide note. we know that attorney general loretta lynch will visit orlando tomorrow. an emotional scene in orlando last night as thousands came out to honor the victims. >> cory james connell. >> organizers say as many as 50,000 people attended a vigil. they held candles creating a ring of fire around the big lake there. 49 people were killed in that shooting. 18 of the injured remain in the hospital now being treated for wounds suffered in the attack. a tree fell right on top of two pedia

telecommute if they can. spread out their start time and leave time. anything to take the stress off the peak period. again, this is with a total shutdown, it's not like what we did two weeks ago. you don't have an option. the only option we have is shuttles and they cannot replicate what we do on trains. >> reporter: this is the worst of it so far fair to say? >> of the two surges this will be and any time we do shutdowns of stations which we have five of these total, it will be tough. >> reporter: talk about the number logistics here. >> train does about 800 passengers. a bus does about 50. imagine the train moving at so many minutes. these buss have es drop off hero to the other station and time and traffic and physically at peak period, all of our buses like everyone else is being used. a limited amount of buses we can throw at this. that's what we're doing. >> reporter: what do you anticipate at rosslyn and parts of northern vin

greenbelt metro station trying to avoid the bottleneck. we'll check in with news4's derrick ward with more on how riders are coping with changes from there. massive wildfires out west continue to grow as firefighters try desperately to get them under control. take a look. in new mexico, the 28 square mile fire destroyed two dozen homes and it's still largely uncontained. and many california neighbors in potrero are forced to evacuate as fire threatens dozens of homes there. >> we're working to find the motive of a murder in washington. they say a man shot and killed stephanie goodloe. she worked in the youth ministry division of mount gilead baptist church. church members say she was taken too soon. >> we're horrified. we have to realize we have to keepoi

step at a time. >> d.c. police made an arrest in this case and they pressed charges in goodloe's murder. a deadly shooting is one of many violent incidents in the city this weekend. someone shot two men on f street early yesterday morning in northeast. 20 minutes earlier a man was stabbed on columbia road northwest. d.c. police are also investigating stabbings on benning road northeast and on valley avenue southeast. all of these victims in these attacks are expected to survive. we just found out that police are now reviewing some surveillance video. this after a fan fell from a second deck following the nba finals. they say this happened during a fight with another fan in the arena. it happened right after the game. the 20 year old we know is in critical but stable condition in the hospital. so far no arrests have been made in this case. eun? >> angie, thank you. right now fans in cleveland are probably still up

celebrating after last night's historic win. look at the crowds there going wild. the cavaliers beat the best team in the nba in an intense game 7 until last night that is. golden state gave up their 3-1 lead over the cavs ending in cleveland's first championship since 1964. look at the celebration there. fans in cleveland a little overzealous, too. this was more of the scene moments after the historic win. some fans were excited and maybe too much as they swarmed a fire truck. reports swirled that it had been stolen. cleveland police tweeted this out. see, the fire truck was not stolen. this however is not okay. a win for the cavs meant king was crowned again. emotions were at an all-time

right now we're learning about a number of heat related deaths out west. arizona confirmed four people died due to a massive heat wave. in addition to those deaths, the heat fueled might have major wildfires across the southwest and there's no relief in sight. the heat is expected to stay in triple digits through the week. with the fun of summer comes the danger many parents don't like to think about. hot car deaths in the past few weeks four children have died after being left inside a car and overheating. advocates with kids and cars.org say that

prince george's county department of public works has deployed some of the shuttle buses that the county uses to get you to the green line. the idea is that they can get you from station like this to the green line that will alleviate some of the crowding at the stations that are closed and some of the other shuttles running among those stations. now there's also going to be a shuttle from the largo station that will take to you suitland and also on the green line. at peak times shuttles will go on a load and go status. they're going to line up and take as many people as they can safely. off peak times they'll run every 15 minutes. these are express shuttles. won't pick up passengers at any other place. point a to point b and back again. we hear more from a spokesperson from prince george's county department of public works about how the county is helping out. >> it's unlike metro that may run until midnight. they'll run until

fatally shot. as of now details very limited. we've been making calls all morning long. we know no arrests have been made. stay with news4 as we work to get more information on this developing story out of northeast. eun? >> it's 6:35. today the trial is set to begin in a wrongful death lawsuit involving a frostburg state university football player. the 22-year-old collapsed in training camp in 2011 and died six days later from a concussion. the lawsuit accuses the school of being negligent and letting him participate in practice. it also claims his death was preventible. the lawsuit names the ncaa and frostburg's head coach as defendants. a sleepy driver may be what caused a crash that killed six people on i-95. a van flipped over five times. this was 20 miles south of fredericksburg. wenceslao cruz-marquez was behind the market when that van crashed just after mi

saturday. he's now charged with six counts of involuntary manslaughter. cruz-martinez and 15 others were in that van headed to new jersey from north carolina. four men, a woman and a child died. a cigarette caused this apartment fire in laurel. it happened saturday night on briarwood lane. fire officials say the cigarette was not properly put out. the fire started on the third floor balcony and spread quickly to the roof. it took firefighters 40 minutes to put out the flames here. the red cross is helping 22 displaced residents. the fire did $300,000 in damage. today maryland begins issuing its newly redesigned driver's licenses and i.d. cards. this is what they look like. officials say the design better protects against identity theft and fraud. the new cards are more durable and tamper resistance and can now have veteran designation appear on the front of the licenses as well. virginia senators and d.c. mayor will voice their concerns

program with news4's derrick ward live at the new carrollton metro station. what are you seeing? >> reporter: i tell you what, we're starting to see a bit of an increase in people coming into the station. the thing to remember is that if you get the train from here, you'll only get as far as minnesota avenue. but there are ways to get you around this and metro is helping you to continue on the rails. metro and prince george's county. what's happening now is the county is going to be running shuttle buses to the green line so if you're here at new carrollton they'll take you to the greenbelt station. it's free. at largo, they'll take you to the suitland station. this is on a load and go basis for early morning rush 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. nonrush hour 15 minutes apart. it's free and express and not only are you going
