it's just like you can't imagine and you just want to run. >> reporter: two dozen homes destroyed in the wake of the dog head fire. a 1700 acre monster that has been hard for firefighters to contain. in santa barbara, 2,000 firefighters are battling the sherpa fire. >> reporter: blackened close to 8,000 acres, turning parts of the hillside into ash. but it's now the heat crews are most worried about. sunday, three firefighters had to be airlifted for heat-related emergencies. >> we have started to see some of the effects of this hot weather and the impact that it is having on our firefighters. >> reporter: that hot weather having an impact everywhere. >> 104 degrees in chino hills. >> reporter: the national weather service has issued excessive heat warnings throughout the southwest. officials in california issuing a flex

to conserve energy and protect themselves from heat stroke. in arizona, the extreme heat is fatal. >> this is like incomparable to anywhere else. >> reporter: four deaths blamed on the brutal weather. how tragic and overwhelming this heat can be. in the striking example of this extreme heat a united express flight from phoenix to houston had to be diverted because of those record temperatures in arizona. sometimes the heat can compromise the lift of the plane's wings and the thrust of its engine. striking to think about how the heat can affect something even science based. willie and savannah. >> those conditions not helping at all. >> we have dylan in for al and some relief for the southwest coming. >> still going to be hot. it is still going to be exceptionally hot with temperatures up around 115 degrees. we have 29 million people under some sort of heat alert in the southwest.

million people who will see temperatures above 90 degrees across the entire country. so, it is hot everywhere. let's take a look at what is going on. temperatures hot 100 to 120 degrees. humidity is so low, you need to stay hydrated. make sure you check on your neighbors and make sure that everyone is safe during this heat. this area of high pressure, you have this sinking air and as the air sinks, it heats up. temperatures to remain 15 to nearly 25 degrees above average. los angeles about 104 degrees. as we go through the middle of the week, we will see temperatures drop off a little bit in burbank but through yuma and phoenix, temperatures not breaking records but still up around 115 degrees. the good news for firefighters in santa barbara, temperatures should drop into the 80s and temperatures incrse

peter, thank you. speaking of guns, the connecticut judge with whether a lawsuit can proceed against the maker of a semi automatic rifle used in the sandy hook shooting. members of the family are suing remington arms which made the rifle used in that attack. the plaintiffs say the company knew the rifle was meant for the military and too dangerous to sell to civilians. remmington shield gun manufacturers from most lawsuits over criminal use of their products. a funeral will be held tomorrow for the 2-year-old boy who was killed by an alligator at disney world. this is more changes are being made at the park in the wake of this tragedy. kerry sanders is following that story for us. kerry, good morning. >> savannah, it's been almost a week since 2-year-old lane graves was attacked and killed by an alligator here at disney world. this morning his parents and 4-year-old sister are back home in nebraska, preparing to lay

lane graves was snatched by an alligator and dragged to his death remains closed. after capturing what may be all the wild alligators that were in the waterways here, disney added the temporary barriers. new signs are up, too, warning guests alligators and snakes can be dangerous. disney saying its safety team along with its animal behavior experts are working on a long-term solution. evaluating what procedures need to change while recognizing alligators are a fact of life in florida. last tuesday evening, 2-year-old lane graves was playing in shallow water in the lagoon with his dad by his side. the alligator attacked just after sun down when gators usually hunt. the medical examiner says the toddler died from drowning and traumatic injuries. lane's father releasing this emotional statement. melissa and i continue to deal with the loss of our beloved b

"we take these matters very seriously and if cooperated fully, and immediately with law enforcement officials in their investigation of the suspect." the airline's policy

student counseling center at her school at the university of chicago seeking help. she was shocked when they immediately sent her to a psychiatric hospital. >> it was shocked when they said you have to go in the ambulance. just for a few days they told her, but she was kept in the hospital for two weeks and then sent straight to a meeting with school officials who told her she had to leave campus immediately. >> they just handed me this contract saying i had to move all my stuff out of my dorm in 48 hours and just kept pressuring me to sign it. >> do you feel it was voluntary? no. no. >> reporter: college students dealing with mental health issues are often told to seek help at counseling centers at this one like the university of chicago. over the course of our six-month investigation, we spoke with 22 students at schools across the country who claim seeking help was the beginning of a nightmare. a growing controversy splashed across the pages of school newspapers nationwide. >> this is a big deal and it i

unfortunately, one of the favorites, general tsao's chicken, has a lot of sodium. try this at home. marinate the chicken. mix egg white, reduced salt soy sauce, mix and add to chicken. marinate for at least 30 minutes. make sauce. bring pineapple juice to a boil. reduce heat, simmer until thickened for about 7 minutes. cool. once cooled mix in soy sauce, rice and wine vinegar, sesame seed oil, cornstarch. whisk together. spray skill let with non-stick cooking spray. cook chicken for about 7 minutes.
