it's tuesday, june 21st. coming up on "early today," just a week after the largest mass shooting in u.s. history, the senate votes down changes to america's gun control laws. this as the chilling 911 calls from the pulse nightclub are released by the fbi. donald trump is forced to clarify more statements while his campaign shake-up leads to more concern for republicans. plus, new hope for a zika vaccine. a possible connection between an actor's death and his recalled jeep grand cherokee. relatives of past mass shootings sit in the gallery. the first all senators were on hand for a vote. for more, here is tracie potts from washington. did these measures ever have a chance of passing? >> not really. we were talking about it 24 hours ago and exactly what happened. take a look at the vote totals. four votes. two republican ideas and two democratic ideas and all failed as you can take a look here. this is the first time this year that all 100 senators including bernie sanders were here to vote. reaction to this? let's start with the campaign trail. hillary clinton tweeted enough with the names of the 49 victims from orlando. we have also heard from the brady campaign saying even though they are disappointed, they are hopeful because they i think the tide is turning. there was some consensus that guns needed to be prevent from getting in the h o

how do you do that? that is where things tended to break down here. also, republicans insisted that the focus needs to be on defeating terror overseas, defeating isis and stopping that flow of information and, for some of the suspects, inspiration into the united states. so as of today, yet again, all of these have failed and now, essentially, congress is right back where it started on gun control. >> thank you for that. news of the senate's failure came after the fbi released partial transcripts of the chilling 911 calls made by orlando gunman omar mateen during the massacre. the transcripts showed what he told authorities while he was carrying out his deadly rampage. t release of those transcripts brought controversy on what the fed attempted to say what they said only to reverse

later in the day. >> reporter: a half hour after the first gunshots, omar mateen calls 911 and speaks to a dispatcher in 60 seconds. he says the following. he admits i'm in orlando and i did the shootings. >> he did so in a chilling, calm, and deliberate manner. >> reporter: mateen then says i pledge of allegiance to abu bakr al baghdadi. it omitted any reference to isis but after critics like paul ryan argued the administration was minimizing the threat, the fbi released an unredacted version, calling the controversy an unnecessary distraction. >> we are not going to propagate violent rhetoric. >> reporter: three other calls, mateen identifies him as an islamic soldier and demands america stop bombing syria and iraq and has explosi

a cressing room window was pulled out of a bathroom for people to evacuate. at 4:29, the following happened. at 5:02, the s.w.a.t. team stormed the building. >> i'm just trying to clarify that is absolutely not true that we didn't do anything for three hours. yesterday, donald trump used his significant reality show phrase against one of his own. he gave campaign manager corey lewandowski the boot with two words -- you're fired. the dramatic shake-up took the rest of the campaign team by surprise. some of the inner circle admitted they learned of the change through news reports and came after a meeting between trump and his children who some say are exercising an even more crucial role in the campaign. nbc's katy tur has those details. >> reporter: after more than a year by his side, donald trump ousted corey lewa

welcome back, everybody. there is promising news in the fight against the zika virus. the fda gave a drug company the green light to begin testing a potential vaccine in humans. it uses an electronic pulse to help immune cells absorb the vaccine better. at the same time, researchers at the national institutes of health say they should have a vaccine ready for human testing in a matter of weeks. we will keep you posted. britain is preparing to vote whether to stay in the europe union later this week.
