good afternoon, everybody. it is a weather alert day. i'm chris lawrence. pat lawson muse is standing by getting updates from chief meteorologist doug kammerer. >> that's right, doug. these storms have been giving us trouble all afternoon and we're looking at trouble this afternoon and evening. these are going to continue to move through as part of the frontal boundary moving through right now. we've had damage just to the north and we continue to see the storms pounding the area with extremely heavy rain and a ton of lightning and the storms continue to light up here. you notice the yellow boxes are severe thunderstorm warnings with la rhea and shenandoah county and prince william county and although it's moving out of prince william county and baltimore right down through howard and montgomery county and those are flash flood warnings which are still in effect until 10:00 and there are flood warnings in parts of the region and we always talk about it, turn around, don't drown. from d.c. toward springfield and

mount vernon. extremely heavy rain in this area. let's zoom in even more and right along i-95, some extremely heavy rain around the springfield area just south of clinton and hello waldorf. you've been under the gun for the last half hour to 45 minutes and not just the heavy rain and watch the lightning. wow! look at the amount of lightning. nearly 1,000 lightning strikes every ten minutes and a lightning show going on right over toward waldorf and right on through the mechanicsville area through st. mary's county and also under a severe thunderstorm warning. take a look at the wider view and you can see the frontal boundary making its way down slowly right along the pennsylvania-maryland border and we still have storms left to go and we think the strongest storms are moving down to the south and east. this is a sign of things to come for thursday. we have another day of potentially severe weather. we'll talk much more about that and we've had warningll

up-to-the-minute live radar and get alerts when stormy weather is approaching your neighborhood. that app could really be a big help when there is rough weather moving in. >> yeah. we can use the rain. i think we can all do without everything coming with it. thanks a lot, pat. we are also following some breaking news only on 4. federal agents are investigating whether an employee in d.c. was plotting an attack inside the department of homeland security. agents are looking into whether he was targeting senior agency officials. let's push ahead with that story. his name is jonathan winky, arrested two weeks ago when security say they found him carrying a gun inside the building. that's inside the homeland security headquarters not far from us right on nebraska avenue. winky was working there in agency intelligence. he has been charged with a gun crime. he's pleaded not

court filings that were obtained by news 4 say soon after that arrest, federal agents asked a judge's permission to raid winky's home in martinsburg, west virginia. they say they had probable cause to believe winky was possibly going to commit violence against senior homeland security officials and they found hollow point bullets, pepper spray and two radio devices in his home. again, those filings, they say the federal agents found winky in close proximity of a meeting of senior officials when they questioned him. a meeting he was aware of. he hasn't responded when we sought out winky and his lawyer to comment. on news 4 at 5:00 we will take you to martinsburg and the neighborhood that the federal agents raided and more on what the federal agents say initially made them suspicious. hundreds of customers who

live around clairendon boulevard and a transformer fire is to blame. crews are still cleaning up the mess in arlington. callers reported an explosion shortly before 10:00 this morning and firefighters had to bring in national airport because water isn't effective on a transformer fire. >> when i first got here, the flames were coming up out of the street grate and had to be 40, 50 feet, i would say. obviously, we're all kept at a safe distance. >> have you ever seen something like that before? >> i haven't seen one quite that dramatic. >> right now the concern is with any pets that may have been left in those buildings. remember, it's an extremely hot day with no electricity, but they are hoping to get the power back on some time this evening. dozens of protesters came to fairfax to rally outside the national rifle association's headquarters and they're calling forra know end to gun violence and assault weapons. news 4's chris gordon is getting new reaction in chantilly

talking to people on both sides of the gun control debate. what are you hearing, chris? >> reporter: well, we are here tonight at blue ridge arsenal in chantilly, virginia, where we came to get the point of view of employees of this gun store and shooting range. very different from what we heard earlier in the day from the protesters at the nra. >> ain't going to let the nra turn us around. >> protesters at the nr ahead quarters staged what they called a die-in, laying on the ground pretending to be shot. hands painted red to symbolize the blood of those killed by gun violence and the victims of the orlando mass shooting. >> i'm also a gun safety survivor. i lost someone and i was directly impacted by gun violence. this picture here is the picture of my nephew, john paul, jr. he was actually killed on november 11, 2008, which happened to be veterans day.

disobedience was organized by code pink to demand tougher background checks and ban assault weapons. fairfax police negotiated guidelines issued a warning and arrested 18 protesters escorted them to police cruisers, issuing summonses. >> here at blue ridge arsenal in chantilly, virginia, they say sales of semiautomatic weapons and handguns have gone up in a week and a half since the orlando shootings. >> there is not one person in the store that doesn't want the gun violence to stop. there is not one person at the nra who doesn't want the gun violence to stop, but i think we need to focus on the actual person behind the violence, not the firearm itself. >> ahead at 5:00, why gun sales have increased so dramatically since the orlando shootings. that's the latest live in chantilly, virginia, back to you. >>

welcome back, everybody. i'm storm team 4's lauren ricketts and we're looking at severe weather crawling through the region. that is a flash flood warning that goes from montgomery county that goes to the city of baltimore. 5:30, 6:00 is when it expires and we've had flooded roadways around that region. please do not drive across flooded roadways. you can still see heavy, heavy rain coming through charles county, calvert county and even into st. mary's county and that's where we have some severe weather warning and we also have reports of hail. an inch and a half in charles county. a lot of dangerous wind, as well. this storm will continue to blow through. it could drop one to two inches possible in some of that region. you can see lightning and that lightning is really intense so stay indoors and we've got a lot of rain to get through. marylandll

rain and now we have storms forming in win chester and go all of the way down through 81 and back to west virginia. we'll continue to update you with some of these storms as we go through the 4:00. guys? >> thanks a lot, lauren. we're seeing new signs of what kind of impact the safe track program is having on metro ridership. >> the agency's numbers show a lot of people are avoiding the rails during this project. ridership this morning east of the current work zone is down 74%. was down compared to the same tuesday last year. meanwhile, ridership at some stations near the north end of the green and yellow lines was up more than 20%. those stations are not part of the areas that are single tracking or closed during the program's phase 2 which began yesterday. >> a freak accident that claimed a young actor's life. we first told you about this yesterday. now we're hearing from a local man with the same kind of car who says the same thing almost en

it's a storm team 4 weather alert day and right now we're tracking the progress of those storms we've seen this afternoon. >> we're also hearing our first reports about power outages and getting a look at roads that look more like streams this afternoon. doug has an update in just a couple of minutes. safety regulators are continuing to investigate whether a recalled jeep grand cherokee led to the death of an actor. >> a man from maryland reached out to susan hogan and said something very similar happened to him. i've got a million questions about this story. >> so do a lot of people, chris. actually, it could really be months before the investigation into the accidental death of anton yelchin is

in the meantime, we are learning about the 2016 jeep which was part of the massive recall in april. chrysler has identified 700 complaints potentially related to problems with its electronic shifters. 312 crashes. 308 claim of property damage and 41 injuries, some serious and now one potential death. news about this fatal accident did not come as a surprise to this mare lant man. michael bricks said his jeep rolled archway on him after he got out to pump gas with his child still in the car. >> and the car is literally rolling backward. >> correct. >> what did you do? >> initial quick panic, but i knew i had to get back in the car, hit the brake and put it in park. >> one month after his jeep rolled away he got a recall for possible rollaway problems with the transmission's electronic shift lever. coming up tonight a

on a full scholarship. again, she managed all of this while living in a homeless shelter. going to school on saturdays, taking classes by internet at night. she says after she gets her degree she wants to come back here to d.c. and help young girls just like her. >> i see myself coming back. i want to come back to d.c. to help my community. that's what i see myself doing. all right. we are continuing to follow our big story this afternoon which is the developing weather situation outside. we have seen these storm clouds roll so quickly into our area. >> it's been a rough afternoon and it will be a rough evening, doug. >> right now the heaviest storms south of the metro area earlier and montgomery county and howard county really took a direct hit from the storms as they moved on through and right now we're looking at flash flood warnings in parts of howard and the only severe weather warning, that

west, though. this storm right here coming right around la rhea area and la rhea has seen a couple of storms and this was a brand new one for hampshire county west virginia and that one just issued and look at these storms back around win chester and this is another area that we'll be moving around in the rest of the evening and we'll see these moving around these same lines around winchester toward bluemont and there are lightning associated with those and this is the area. look at the incredible amount of rain and in through southern prince georges county. some of the heaviest rain and let's zoom on into the huntington county area and right around prince frederick and that's the area of heaviest rain now and strong winds and intense lightning. how about that. incredible amounts and i want to show you how many lightning strikes we've seen in the last ten mes

through here. so over the last ten minutes as i make that box. 1,187 lightning strikes in the last ten minutes. that is absolutely incredible and right now we're watching this line form back to the west. so there is a lot of lightning around winchester and moving toward loudoun county and notice to the north, not a whole lot. >> we saw a high temperature of 72 under mostly cloudy skies and you can see where the storms have been and 71 at dulles and 85 at quantico. it was 9015 minutes ago in manassas after the rain came through and now we're on the cooler side and temperatures are going up back to the west. i want to show you the wide view now and here's the front making its way on down to the south. behind it, we've got clear skies and tomorrow will be a beautiful day and watch what happens on thursday. severe weather is today. slight risk for severe weather across our entire region and the enhanced risk of southern maryland and that's

no problem tomorrow, but on thursday we see another area of slight risk and that could be a very strong system and that could come in early thursday morning and proceed until thursday afternoon. again, a dangerous situation potentially on thursday, too. tomorrow, not much going on. high temperature, 88 and low humidity and 87 on your thursday and beautiful weather as we head in toward the weekend, friday and saturday right now looking great and 82 on friday and 85 on saturday and any more warnings pop up and we do expect a few more and we'll continue to keep you posted on this. >> thank you, doug. >> from one weather extreme to another and the deadly heat wave causing fiery problems in several states. >> plus how part of a community in orlando is just starting to get back to normal

stormy weather is lighting up storm team 4 radar this afternoon. it is a weather alert day as the watches and warnings are in effect for parts of the area. team coverage from storm team 4 all afternoon. the neighborhood around the pulse nightclub in orlando is still reeling from the tragedy, but police barricades and roadblocks are coming down and businesses are reopening in that neighborhood. restaurants, a car shop and other businesses have been closed since

allegedly killed 49 people. one owner says it will take time to bounce back. >> it's very hard, financially hard, it's not as hard as losing a person. financially, like i said, two, three months, but losing someone you can't get them back. >> this is the first time a lot of employees and customers have been back since the shooting. today attorney general loretta lynch met with the victim's relatives and got a briefing from investigators who are still trying to figure out why the shooter targeted that popular gay nightclub. out west, some record-breaking weather is fueling one of nine wildfires that are now burning out of control across several states. >> the flames have forced hundreds of people out of their homes and it's prompted a smoke pollution warning for dozens of recalli others. >> wildfires burning across the west in some of the worst conditions possib

case wes no signs of stopping. here in southern california, two dueling fires. the fish fire and the reservoir fire have so far burned about 5400 acres. >> the brush right now is so dry and very aggressive. >> reporter: 750 firefighters trying to battle back with no containment leading to about 750 evacuations. firefighters here worried about low visibility and about the possibility of winds picking up and about a series of power lines that are in the hills with those two fires could join. also some concern, down south at the border fire between the u.s.-mexico border. that fire's burned about 7500 acres and burned up three structures and injured one firefighter. there are other fires burning across the west in new mexico. in arizona firefighters hope to get containment on those. hopefully, they're trying to keep the weather conditions in check. near triple digit temperatures expected again today. i'm steve patterson, nbc news. it's another way to se

happening now at 4:30, watches and warnings all across the region this afternoon. it's a storm team 4 weather alert day and we are tracking storms and heavy rain and parts of the metropolitan washington area. we're keeping you up-to-date in the storm team center. we've got crews heading out to see how the storms are impacting traffic. let's start with meteorologist lauren ricketts. we're watching the alarms going off and let me take you to the maps and this is the newest warning that has popped up and it goes from the city of winchester out towards clark county and into the eastern panhandle of west virginia and that goes until 5:15, doug. that's moving right along route 7 towards

we went through last thursday and we're looking at rain rates around in southern maryland where we're still seeing severe warning and the rain rates, an inch and a half at times and we'll take you now back out to the shenandoah valley again and show you this one coming through rappahannock and paige county and that's another through luray and this will continue to move out towards kull pepper and south of warrenton and head to stafford county and this one out of winchester and we'll continue to watch that red right there and the flash flood warning going until 5:30, please, please, please, do not drive across flooded roadways and we'll get new information that's just now coming out. >> we'll be looking for that, lauryn, thank you. >> you can track the storms and get up-to-date information

their life his change because of the loss of their mother. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey was in court for the sentencing and will join us in the next hour with the latest. the little toddler from nebraska who was killed by an alligator a week ago has now been laid to rest. funeral services were held this morning for 2-year-old lane graves although it was limited to family and close friends. the boy was dragged into the water at disney world in orlando and drowned. in a statement, his parents thanked friends and strangers who shared in their loss and showed, quote, profound compassion. now to the presidential race and late developments from the campaign trail. hillary clinton blasted donald trump and his economic plan today. he's returning fire on social media. steve handelsman has more. >> reporter: hillary clinton charged donald trump's economic plan and temme

hello, everybody. taking a look at these storms continuing to come through on storm team 4 radar and the strongest storms have been down to the south in southern maryland over the last half hour and a new severe thunderstorm warning back to the west and here's the storm down toward calvert county and severe thunderstorm warning continues there and the new warning that just popped up here just a little while ago. we'll see if you can zoom on in and i want to get closer here around the winchester area around berriville and toward bluemont into jefferson county west virginia and there's

storm down toward calvert county right now. we'll continue to keep you posted on new watches that are out there and this will continue for the night tonight and again on thursday potentially. much more in just a minute. >> all right, doug. tragedy at a sleepaway camp overnight in indiana. an 11-year-old was killed when a tree fell on to her cabin. officials say lightning struck a healthy tree and knocked that tree into a cabin where staff were sleeping. >> we're following a developing story where fire crews have been putting out hot spots at a barn fire and this happened in fairfax station and the same bar on van thompson road also caught fire last tuesday and that fire was accidental and a lot smaller and it's not known what caused the second one, but the good thing is crews say no animals or people were inside that barn when the fire started. >> first at 4:00, a fresh start for a lot of people in need. we're taking

throughout the evening hours and we'll see it right here from southern portions of frederick county and extreme southeastern jefferson and there are two separate storms out here. i want to show you where these storms are and another area down to the south and no severe thunderstorm warnings here and it is these storms that i'm watching back toward the winchester area that have developed here. >> once again. you notice there is a rotation here and a little hook that i will continue to watch that closely. that is in clark count and a severe thunderstorm warning for clark county making its way over to the east. jefferson county and here it is in southern jefferson county and across the road from route 7 to bluemont and then more very heavy rain down toward extreme southern calvert county and this just continues as we move on through the afternoon. look at the lightning and the intense lightning with this storm here and now with this guy right in here and again, what we're seeing

one down to the south, this storm will most likely move toward frederick, and toward the bluemont area and if you live in loudoun county and it will get hid over the next half an hour and you could see golf ball-sized hail with some of these storms and that's what we've seen from the reefious storms and we could be seeing the potential and we could see more flash flooding too. we've seen a lot of damage around the area and lauryn and i have been talking about other locations including out toward dulles that has seen severe weathers, too. >> we've seen wind glut ofs. 62 miles an hour at bwi and as doug was talking about, several trees down across the region. i saw fauquier countynd

got hail and 1 1/3. hail is being reported at dulles. you can see over an inch and a half of hail moving through that area at 3:30 and then we had the thunderstorm wind damage blocking barnsville road and we had footage of that just around the city of friendship and that's where we had a little bit of a possible rotation and we were looking at that time and it was radar indicated and nothing that has come down from the national weather service. it will produce heavy wind, hail and flooding conditions. not only today do we have those storms, but possibly as we get into thursday we're also looking at a chance of severe weather moving through our region so today, thursday, and we've got a nice weekend. talk about the thursday and the seven-day. nothing bnd

her vehicle went off the road striking a tree before it flipped over. she died on scene. a minute later and less than a mile away police say the driver of this suv crashed into a utility pole at randolph. >> at least two, maybe more passengers, fled from the vehicle. >> reporter: police say the driver and one of those passengers were taken into custody and released without charges. investigators say two days before the crash the driver broke his back window after hitting a car in the parking lot of the only mcdonald's. investigators are showing the back of the suv because they're still trying to piece together what happened on randolph road before the crash and they're hoping witnesses come forward. >> the plastic wrapped on the outside of the windshield would be very recognizable. >> the driver and passenger have not been charged andy'

every angle of the severe weather and we begin with chief meteorologist doug kammerer with the up to the minute forecast. >> how are we looking, doug? >> the warnings continue, and they have been all across our region and the brand new severe thunderstorm warning and i told you about one two minutes ago and since then there's been a new one in washington county and frederick county, maryland. look at the split that's going on right here and another one down to the south around culpeper county and madison county. these storms all moving toward culpeper. culpeper county will get hit very hard here and this is the area right here that i'm really watching and there are three distinct storms and one here, one here and one back to the north. these two are separating and moving across the region here in toward portions of frederick county and montgomery county and this one right here with an extremely strong storm around the leesburg area just south and west of leesburg and
